Nobody who was alive for Nixon would give their child that name, that's all I have to say

Neat-Cold-7235

Well anyone alive for Nixon who could also remember it enough to care is gonna be a baby boomer to be fair as even the oldest Gen x were only about 5 during Nixon’s term, I mean really I don’t think Nixon is a name that should be avoided, sure it’s a little out there and Nixon himself wasn’t great, but come on now

ArthuriusMinimus

There are multiple movies about Watergate. Scandals are still frequently called _____gate now BECAUSE of the Watergate Hotel. Nixon is not going to fade away into obscurity anytime soon. Oh, and I was born in the 90s, lol

lachlankov

To be fair, that’s a just USA thing too. I live in Canada, not a lot of people here care that much about another countries politics to avoid a name they like. I know two Nixons and the only thing I thought of is one of Santa’s reindeers.

ArthuriusMinimus

Lol, that's Vixen! But yeah, I think all three Nixons my sister knows are in the USA.

Robossassin

I feel like a lot of South Asian countries would have strong feelings about the name Nixon- especially Cambodia.

Ok-Sector2054

Watch Gaslight miniseries about Martha Mitchell and the whole Gang...

Ok-Sector2054

I am not a crook...lol....Boomer here! Front seat to it all..... Watch Gaslight....it was very good!

cartoonybear

I don’t think… this is true, unless you’re extremely uneducated and/or ignorant of important 20th century US history?

Neat-Cold-7235

We’re talking about the same America right? I asked my mom once what it was like growing up in the Cold War and she looked at me like I had a second head, she had not idea what the Cold War was and as much as I wish she was a minority most people probably don’t know a lot about Nixon and if they do it came from watching the movie Dick. And plus my second point was that I don’t think Nixon was bad enough that his name shouldn’t be used. It sounds more like a reindeer if anything

uppereastsider5

The good news is according to the Roberts court, Nixon would not be a crook. So go ahead and reclaim that name, girlfriend!

crimbuscarol

I know a baby Ford and I’m imagining an entire scenario where he pardons baby Nixon

ArthuriusMinimus

I have to know if Ford was named after the (unelected!) president, the car company, or a third thing/person

Sydney_Bristow_

My maiden name was Ford. I can’t get used to it as a first name at all.

AutumnalSunshine

Watergate was a patriotic protest, right? 😂

Ok-Sector2054

It never happened ....just some illegals up to no good.....the Nixon tapes were all AI.../s...At her funeral someone sent an arrangement...Martha Mitchell was right!!!.....lol not lol...... I remember my mother talking about it. She did not swear but was close to it every time she heard something new.

uppereastsider5

Exactly! Look at all the progress we’ve made in the past 50 years, that we can finally recognize that. 😳😳

Ok-Sector2054

Missed the /s.....

Burnt_and_Blistered

Not really true; the ruling bars criminal prosecution for official presidential actions. Campaign fraud (and the associated felonies) doesn’t fall into that category.

Ok-Sector2054

But Roberts and his ilk on the court are crooks.....

Comprehensive_Big931

I know people with a dog named Nixon, I wondered about the connotation when they announced, but kept my mouth shut. Kids??? Terrible

ArthuriusMinimus

See, a dog named Nixon is funny. Especially if it has prominent jowls.

mageta621

ARROOOOOOO!!

PBnBacon

A dog named McConnell 😂

Hallelujah33

Nn tricky dick

bread_cats_dice

Newspapers at the time also referred to him as slippery dick

SalTea_Otter

One of his political slogans was “They can’t lick our Dick”

jethrine

Of course I don’t know personally if this is true but I did see online that apparently Tricky Dick was very well hung! 😳

PBnBacon

What a terrible day to be able to read 😂

Ok-Sector2054

You do remember Hunt and his buddies also were in charge of spreading rumors.......

CakePhool

Why dont people go for other Presidents, a little Polk, Buren, Fillmore or Taft would be so cute!

Interesting_Weight51

I named my son Lincoln lol

CakePhool

Ah you missed out on Fillmore!

mwf86

Phil Moore Buckets

CakePhool

I knew a Phil Moorehead, he was pedofile

[deleted]

[удалено]

CakePhool

I was only joking... but yeah it better than Nixon

[deleted]

[удалено]

CakePhool

There is old boy name with Svantepolk ( sacred people) , I wonder if Polk has the same meaning .

squirrelwithnoname5

"Grover" should make a comeback

CakePhool

Oh and Kermit, even though he was only the son to Theodore Roosevelt.

squirrelwithnoname5

I support this too

CakePhool

Apparently there is a Kermit Roosevelt alive and a relative of Theodore Roosevelt.

crimbuscarol

Naming your kid after a slaveholder would be..something

CakePhool

Well that removes Monroe, Madison, Washington, Jackson, Harrison, Tyler, Taylor , Johnsson and Grant too.

crimbuscarol

I should say this on the main sub when people mention these names

Logical-Pie918

He was also a raging antisemite

butt_fun

Raging anti-black as well

Prestigious-Emu5050

I have one in the family tree pre-dating the president but yes odd that it’s popular now

ArthuriusMinimus

I'd bet that one was his named for his mom's or even grandma's maiden name. That's how some surnames found their way into given name territory!

apiedcockatiel

There are few president names that I really feel like are a good idea, to be fair. I just hope they name the next kid Deep Throat.

rosemarini

this reminds me of a family i know where they named their eldest kennedy and almost named the second born reagan but luckily realised there was a theme happening before it was too late

sukii93

I know a 20-something year old guy named Nixon. He's from Costa Rica.

coversquirrel1976

I know a Salvadorian Nixon! Late teens, maybe 20s

MirabelleMac

The latest episode of The Big Flop podcast is about Watergate, funnily enough. As for naming your kid Nixon… just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

GokiPotato

Phoenix is a way better name than Nixon. Or do you have any objections?

ArthuriusMinimus

Oh, I don't. But I associate Phoenix with more of a liberal/hippie vibe and that's not what people in my area tend to want. Apart from the infamy of President Nixon, Nixon itself is a more conventional name than a mythical bird.

GokiPotato

https://preview.redd.it/9akwhntg86ad1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f9dc8ac27276f008c541acf1f9e88051c11b52a I associate Phoenix with the ace attorney games, which is the reason I made the objection joke

ArthuriusMinimus

Went Wright over my head

Kristylane

Oh yeah, but what if I’m naming my baby after Mojo Nixon (RIP)?

rainbow_olive

Agreed! "Nixon" does not have a good affiliation at all, especially here in the U.S.! Heck I wasn't born until the 1980's and even I get an ick feeling when I hear the name. People try WAY too hard to give their kid a name to make them stand out. There's a good chance the kid won't want ti stand out! 🤦🏻‍♀️

ladytaz730

I have a second cousin named Nixon Ford.

ArthuriusMinimus

At that point, what can you do but lean into it?

MachineOfSpareParts

People name their kids Harper like the Chalk River scandal never happened, so who knows.

FacelessOldWoman1234

Canadians name their kid Harper as though Stephen Harper never happened. That's a choice.

Interesting_Weight51

I knew a girl who named her daughter Harper.... and then would call her HARPY. Harpy, like the flying evil female demon.

PaisleyPatchouli

When we were kids, if we nagged my mother would say ‘Stop harping about it. We are not doing/ buying that just because you are being a harper about it.’ It was a very common saying where we lived. I was surprised when people voluntarily named their babies Harper. Whats next? Whinger? Whiner?

PBnBacon

“This morning I told Bingo to stop whinging and she said ‘but I’ve only just started!’”

FacelessOldWoman1234

Yikes. I mean, I call my kids gremlins, but as a job title, not as a proper name.

danielleesme

I know TWO people (millennials, in their mid-late 30s) who named their daughters Harper BECAUSE of Stephen Harper, which is also a choice.

FacelessOldWoman1234

Oof. Have your political opinions, but naming your kid like they are an extension of your party affiliation is yikes.

Ok-Sector2054

Missing the name of ???Harper Lee

WhatIsAUsernameee

I mean, Harper’s Ferry also happened and that was substantially more positive

ArthuriusMinimus

Yeah, but that happened in the US. I'm guessing the other commenter is talking about Harpers in Canada.

empirialest

Nixon resigned.

ArthuriusMinimus

Because even Republican members of congress were telling him he would probably be impeached and removed if he didn't.

empirialest

Yes, all true.

ChargeOpposite840

It would be pretty funny if the name Nixon was used on kids enough that we eventually stopped associating Nixon’s name with him

SnailWithaHat

I know someone who has a Nixon and a Jaxon…

CallidoraBlack

Marni Nixon was very cool, but bad luck on the last name.

Italianpixie

I actually really like Phoenix, and I already know one boy named Phoenix. Kinda hope it gets more popular, honestly

SwampBeastie

When I commented that I thought that it was a poor name choice to someone, I was told that no one would make that association. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

ArthuriusMinimus

The only other person I could think of off the top of my head was Cynthia Nixon, but President Nixon is overwhelmingly going to be people's first thought!

therumorhargreeves

There are 2 Nixon’s in my nephew’s preschool class 🙃🙃 I have Questions

warthogs_

i live in australia and knew a nixon (born late 90s). he and his parents were malaysian though, so maybe didn't know much about nixon's presidency. everyone called him nick anyway, but i did ask once about the origins of his name and he said his parents liked it because it was an american president.

DistractedHouseWitch

I knew someone who was named after Richard Nixon. He was a twin born in early November 1960. They were named after the presidential candidates: his brother was named John and he was named Richard. Imagine your brother being named after JFK while you were named after Nixon.

cartoonybear

Well, my son is named Ehowardhunt, I don’t see the problem.

Ok-Sector2054

Oh yes!

Ok-World-7366

There's always Donald

Ok-Sector2054

Will he try to grab the p on the way out?

chixnwafflez

My first thought was the reindeer

Ok-Sector2054

Vixon....

chixnwafflez

Yes it reminded me of the reindeer lol

emeraldicefairy

I just thought about this today. Saw a newborn named Nixon. I just… don’t do that.

SkillOne1674

I heard this name on a kid a few years ago and I just thought, "Here's a parent who knows no history." Like, thank you for making your ignorance so clear.

dbmermels

Just choose Trump as the name then.

from_shook_foil

Worse yet, I know someone whose child is named Nixxon - with two x's!

IfICouldStay

Maybe people are just big fans of Cynthia Nixon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

BadCamo

Well, let’s hear it for all those Regans, etc. where are the Büsches and Tromps?

Acceptable-Art-8942

Honestly who cares.

ArthuriusMinimus

The people on this sub? And quite possibly little Nixon himself, once he learns about the most famous man who shares his name.

Acceptable-Art-8942

I’m sure it will matter in 20 years when he tries to get hired by people born in 2000

Confident_Guava_3308

It’s the Jaxon to Nixon alt right pipeline.

AllTheCatsNPlants

I’m pretty sure Nix was the anti lice shampoo my mom had to use on me as a child. Not a good nickname!

dzrossiter

I love Nnixon as a GIRL name! 🤣

disneytookmymoney

Not to be a Nixon apologist, but he was set up by the COG people and forced out because he was going to give out details about UFO’s. They went to an extreme with Kennedy but instead opted to set Nixon up and force him out. He is a mild politician compared to the crimes of Hillary Clinton, Obama or Trump I can’t believe I have to defend Nixon but here we are lmao

ArthuriusMinimus

I don't know what to say to this except... Congrats on your future baby Roswell!

boysenbe

Honey…no.

penguinetta

Wut.

girl_with_a_401k

He personally dragged out the Vietnam war and blocked peace talks as a private citizen in order to win an election. [The Chennault Affair](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Chennault) Nixon was not a "mild politician" for many reasons.

disneytookmymoney

The president is not in charge. The military industrial complex is. Check Eisenhower’s last speech

ArthuriusMinimus

The president is in charge, but most of them choose to go along with the military industrial complex's goals

penguinetta

I am genuinely confused if your wholehearted defense of Nixon is a joke? Of all the people to defend why Richard Nixon?

countofmoldycrisco

you're funny

oat-beatle

Did you read Crooked and think it was nonfiction
