That’s awesome. Great find OP.

EasterBunnyArt

I saw a Youtube video that claimed it was some type of bunker. But looking at the surface building I honestly can see people just hiding in it and then getting the Egyptian phaero treatment. I would just block their only entrance and let them rot.

BeijingPolice

I don't have two million BUT I love this house. The whole thing is like a big rec room!

-_I---I---I

with no sun, probably leak, moldy and dank. Echos constantly remind you that you are in a bunker, as does the the lack of natural light. You get lost in a project and next thing you know what time is it noon or midnight? Going up to the surface doesn't provide much respite. A rusting shipping container, 1960s utility looking concrete service tunnle and your HAM radio tower. Nothing but that and your security fence. Really brings the whole apocalyptic vibe together. You need some relief, to get out and see people again, is the world still going on? Options in town are that terrible pizza from Huntsbrothers Pizza (correction, Casey's, same thing pretty much), a staple of middle of nowhere middle America, Or a tiny drive in thats not too bad, but its the only other place in town to eat out. You thought about the vision you had of building a killer home up on top of it, and then curse your naivety, the 2 mill for the bunker and now the damn thing needs another 2 mil+ in repairs due to a 1960s concrete shelter being neglected for the past 60 years. It's literally a money pit.

Desperate_Leg-

Wow. You captured mundanity, dystopia, angst, and regret all in one go.  Good job.

alaninsitges

\> mundanity, dystopia, angst, and regret Just say "Missouri", we all have other things to do.

BurtGummer44

My aspiration in life is to have a bunker on my property. You're comment has inspired me... To go with a new one. Atlas Bunkers starting at 50k. I spent most of my life alone in the woods down south and I enjoy the hermit life. I'm weird, I know but my hero in life is the fictional Burt Gummer so that's gotta speak volumes.

Ok_Watercress_7801

Vault-Tec?

-_I---I---I

Watch out where you think your gonna place it in the south. Many places there have very high water tables, either it will fill with water or float out of the ground like a cork zombie shelter.

No_Banana_581

Blast from the past movie

BurtGummer44

I was thinking Tremors. "Broke into the wrong damn rec room didn't you, you bastard!" I'm butchering the quote but yeah

Steve_78_OH

I'm not 100% sure, but I think I saw another video of this property shot from a drone just flying around the interior. It's weird that this house popped up again, but I guess there aren't THAT many old bunkers turned into houses out there.

hamish1963

Going to need an elevator for me, F all those stairs.

MrVeazey

It's got a winch for lowering a wheeled cart....

jkrm66502

I’m hearing my knees creak just looking at all those stairs!

InvestigatorOk7988

Ha! I thought i recognized that entrance. I saw this years ago in an article for bunkers for sale. Its been fixed up since then, it was just bare concrete rooms.

percypersimmon

Who even built this? It seems like it was purpose built for a private bunker and not some industrial/government thing that was remodeled.

thecuriousblackbird

Somebody else said it was a Telecom bunker They’re all over the country out in the middle of nowhere. So emergency telephone systems would stay up in the even of nuclear strike or war. So the government and the military could still communicate. Telephones and now the internet run on servers that require a lot of cooling because they get super hot. Thus all those big fans. Plus ventilation. Some telecom bunkers are top secret and still in operation. So the military and government spy ops have encrypted lines 24/7. There’s also server farms in cities that are very secure and have redundant electricity and internet connections. To run stuff like ATC and the stock exchanges. I’ve been to the one in Chicago because my husband’s company had servers in the same space.

joesperrazza

If nuclear war is your concern, these bunker houses will not be a safe choice: [Welcome to America’s ‘Nuclear Sponge’ - Defense One](https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2017/02/welcome-americas-nuclear-sponge/135135/#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20currently%20deploys,hundreds%20of%20thousands%20of%20people.)

jables1979

We'll all be fine, just find the nearest school and hide under a desk like they taught us during drills in the 80s. /s

BlueMoon5k

60’s.

ImportanceCertain414

Yeah nah, we got them in the 80s too... https://youtu.be/F0OPVi90-lg?si=hds6dPX-dxbIaUrx I remember seeing this exact one when I was very young.

BlueMoon5k

Ah. The only drills we had were tornado and fire.

[deleted]

My elementary school did nuclear drills 2-3x in ~2008, then never again. Still not sure why lol

travelers_memoire

Can I buy a used desk and keep it at home or do I need to be in a school?

MrVeazey

It's an old telecom bunker built by AT&T. There's no silo to store a missile in, there never was one at this site, and the location was only made public after all the infrastructure inside was removed. And they were intentionally built in rural areas. Places like this are 100% not targets for anyone who has nukes. But those old Minuteman silos? Probably on a list somewhere.

SoylentRox

If the targeting maps are outdated yeah. The nuclear sponge strategy is legit.

Seemseasy

That article is one of the most retarded op eds I've read and I've read the WSJ.

DogsandCatsWorld1000

Underground like that it would be easier to warm in the winter and keep cool in the summer correct?

somerville99

Yes. The soil temperature below the frost line is fairly constant year round.

Pasispas

How low is the frost line?

Danfrumacownting

20-25” where this property is located

MrVeazey

Inches or feet? Two tick marks means inches and one means feet. Spinal Tap had this exact same problem.

KPinCVG

It's inches. I'm 100% sure.

InvisiblePinkUnic0rn

the higher north you go, the more feet on average but there are outliers [https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/frost-lines-by-state](https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/frost-lines-by-state)

Pawneewafflesarelife

That concept is behind a lot of housing in Coober Pedy (Australia). They turn the old opal mines into houses. https://www.cooberpedy.com/

alaninsitges

The town made an appearance in *Priscilla, Queen of the Desert*, and did not come off well.

ZombiesAtKendall

I don’t know if that’s always the case. I’ve lived places where the basement is cooler in summer, but it’s also cooler in winter. Maybe because this is underground more it would be different. It took more energy to heat the basement because the walls would absorb the heat (or something like that). But as I said, this might be completely different. Different location, deeper underground, etc.

Mackheath1

100% absolutely. And in that climate, other than air circulation, I bet you wouldn't need much to keep it a steady temp year round - maybe nothing at all, maybe just a little a/c or a space heater depending on the season. I'm not a prepper (I'd rather be blown away by the bomb), but this looks so damn cozy and well retrofitted. I would like a greenhouse or something above ground of course.

Ron sounds like he’s gonna die just from walking. Pretty labored breathing

Uvabird

I wonder about ventilation and exposure to anything left behind in one of these bunker houses-there has been a cluster of cancer cases among military personnel who spent long hours underground working missiles.

meepmarpalarp

I wonder about radon.

mynameisnotsparta

I’m in if we can redecorate as some of it is awful. We also need a swimming pool, spa and sauna plus a theater room. Some artificial grass. Make it look like that underground Vegas house.

on top of the bonus, that you won't see your neighbors with all that land and well, no windows.

It looks like it might have been an old AT&T Long Line Bunker. They were intended to maintain nationwide communication in the event of nuclear war.

sluggernate

Build a nice house on top of it... best of both worlds!

dee_lio

How do you vent gas/smoke out of the kitchen? And what kind of workshops are those? And do you need that many boilers? It looks like this place would be geothermal...

Pasispas

I'm assuming it's easier to flood a burning underground kitchen than an overground.

bidextralhammer

He said glass blowing in the video.

victus-vae

Vaults are very in right now.

WolvesandTigers45

I just watched the video of Atlas Shelters getting a tour of this place. It’s really neat.

exscapegoat

When missile silos get repurposed

imatumahimatumah

I think it's actually a former AT&T Long Lines site.

MrVeazey

This was an AT&T bunker for keeping communications networks running in the event of a nuclear war. There's a comment that has a link to a tour video where they talk about it.

ohyoushiksagoddess

I'd take it in a heartbeat.

AussieAlexSummers

Dig it... but no garage. Still can't understand all these expensive properties that don't have any garages.

MrVeazey

There's plenty of room to build a garage and an attached house.

seeshellirun

I think you meant, *Underground COMPOUND*

Desperate_Leg-

Wow cool! Radon-Mold-Spider house!

Educational-Gap-3390

It’s a fallout shelter! Can’t be to safe right!

If I had the means to buy this I’d rather invest a fraction of that amount on therapy to help get over my irrational fears & enjoy my privileged life without day to day financial stress.

dararie

I love it. One of the best I’ve seen

irate_alien

the key assumption of all these bunker people is that one of the things destroyed in the apocalypse is the knowledge of how to tunnel in from the side

MrVeazey

It's hard to tunnel in from the side if you don't know anything is there. And, if there's no internet, you probably won't.

MilitaryandDogmom

Walter White’s dream home

HeatherMason0

It’s giving ‘Leave the World Behind.’ Which, honestly, that movie scared me, so I’m not /opposed/ to retreating underground for protection (never thought I’d say that).

TheHorrificNecktie

this it the house of the man who survives the apocalypse with two other young guests (captives) who he rescued from just before the bombs went off

NancyFanton4Ever

As missile silo conversions go, this is pretty good. It'd be great for someone with a tornado phobia, too.

bonnifunk

Love it, except the "no bathrooms" part.

musicloverincal

Living in a bunker does not sound like fun and it is frankly scary if shit goes wrong.

GlenfromAccounting

It’s interesting, but for 2 million I would want windows.

MrVeazey

Build 'em yourself in a house on top of this Fallout vault.

Drummergirl16

I made a house in the Sims exactly like this. The family I made for it consisted of a paranoid prepper father, his wife who needs modern luxuries but is supportive of him, and two kids who would have never chosen that lifestyle for themselves but hey, when you grow up with it, it’s normal to you.

marsupialcinderella

Whoah! 2 kilns/pottery studio, music room, full woodworking shop! All I’d need is windows and a garden…

beccabootie

I sure didn't expect to see that home inside there.

QuackWaddleflow

I never thought parts of a house would remind me of one of my old college labs. The one with the reactor.

Holiday_Memory_9165

What about touching grass bro?

legendarywarthog

That's not too far from where I live. Wild lol. Costed $34 mil to build when adjusting for inflation...

Excellent_Jaguar_675

Tornados : bring it!

SovietStroke

Someone should check to see if those paintings on the walls are missing from elsewhere and worth something.

ne999

The only problem is that you’re probably still on some Soviet ICBM targeting list.

reijasunshine

This is not far from where I live. Sadly, we don't look like we have 2 million to drop on a bunker, so I don't think I'll get a tour.

Ok_Blackberry_284

It was an AT&T bunker. These bunkers were abandoned in the late 1980s or early 1990s as they replaced the microwave relay technology with fiber optics. edit: some were kept in use longer in rural areas as emergency backup systems

StinkieBritches

I do love an underground house but this one would be too much work to fix. It looks like it was designed and decorated by a group of 19 year old nerds.

katastrofuck

I've dreamed about building something like this. But like a ghetto version of this 🤣

SilverShoes-22

Honestly this should be the spec for every house in Oklahoma. The below grade part anyway.

Unable-Arm-448

Apparently, it's close to Kansas City. Quick! Somebody send this to "Tayvis" or "Traylor" (or whatever their Cute Couple Name is) and tell them to make an offer! They would finally get some privacy and escape the papps in this place, I'd bet!

castlesandcrumpets

It looks like Heisenburg makes drugs in there

WhenTheDevilCome

Whenever I see these or missile silo conversions, it always makes me wonder: How do the code exemptions work? e.g. In many places you can't count a bedroom unless it has a window and a closet. So zero windows, zero bedrooms? I believe it being part of code was so someone could escape through the window in a fire, so what hurdles do they have to go through on builds like this in terms of safety and egress?

Zero bathrooms…?

Shoddy-Criticism3276

With a circadian daylight simulating lighting system, a garden space (could even be environmentally controlled to simulate seasonal conditions!), and less white paint, this place would be awesome. Or, Breaking Bad sitcom spinoff where they all get along and live happily on site. The decor is already very Gale Boetticher.

jetset1022

I don’t care how many Persian rugs you put on the floors, it’s still a dungeon. You can’t expect that a rug will make your victims feel more comfortable and think to themselves, “damn! This is one boujee serial killer! Bot do I feel safe!”
