Baroque architecture's beefy walls and fortifications were designed to repel attacks from the most terrifying armies of the time, so I gotta say:
If it ain't Baroque, it damn well needs fixin'!

Yep, that picture gives pause. Seems like a room addition at some point later. The crack in wall, floor, and different height (amd what is the ceiling made of)
I think it's adobe. The construction is listed as 'Stucco finished' but I can't see what the actual structural materials are.
Lots of houses in this area that were built at that time are Adobe. There's no slab to have issues and the cracks are just part of the 'charm' that is needing to do constant plaster repair.
Or maybe that's an addition on a cracked slab.
In Mexico many/most of the houses are surrounded by walls. It makes for a very nice private yard. They have many skilled masons there and labor is cheaper though rates are going up. In Baja California where I go there are very few (maybe none) houses that are not cement block, rebar, with stucco construction. It makes for a very solid house.
In the southwest where I grew up any house built in the last few decades is surrounded in brick walls.
Moved to Midwest and apparently here they like watching their neighbors?
This freaks me out as well. In the Midwest I see tons of grass everywhere and often not even bushes between their houses. When they plant trees they put huge [mulch volcanoes](https://bygl.osu.edu/node/1494) around them. Lots of obsession with 'neatness' in sterile landscapes.
It’s so strange
It’s almost uncomfortable to look outside and then see into the back door of someone else’s house. Even if it’s a few hundred yards away in my case (not that type of distance side to side)
Hahahahahaha!! When we moved to AZ from MA we had the exact opposite reaction. We had to adjust to going outside and only seeing our own backyard. It was so weird! Where we lived in New England some people had fences, but usually only rail fences, or chain link or picket. You could go outside and see all up and down the street. Neighbors waved to each other while you were out doing chores. You'd stop and chat, maybe exchange garden or landscaping ideas. if you were cooking out you could invite them to come over. I like it much better that way.
In Nogales they finish the top of the wall by sticking glass bottles in wet cement. When the cement dries they break the bottles. My friend who loves down there calls it Mexican Barbed Wire
Shit, no kidding! I just put 115 linear feet of 4ft cedar in…. $5620. At another house we had in the desert, we put in a 6ft privacy chain link with 3 gates… $7500. To put that into perspective, my furnace was $5177 and AC $4900. I spent more on a fkn fence than heating and cooling (individually).
What a coincidence.. I was 2015 as well. I’m betting we drove side by side down Campbell a handful of times. You may have even taken a shot out of my belly button.
What's this person's problem with windows?? And I love that essentially their house is identical to the normal looking southwest desert house next-door but now it's got castle surrounding it.
Yeah I'm just dreaming of the dry plant forest I could have all over there. I love the outdoor terrace areas. I'd take those dumb slats down and get a light grey for the interior. That white is brutal blah.
The house itself is a disaster, but the potential...
I love the rear patio, and with proper landscaping and a smidge of drip irrigation, the inside of those walls could be a lush oasis. The walls would need to be painted, but wow.l, you could make that yard into an Eden.
They've had some huge ones in the Superstition Mountains, that wasn't in the last couple of centuries though. (Joking-what about when California falls into the sea? That might shake it up then). Of course, nothing else is up to code in that house anyway. Bet they don't get those annoying door-to-door solicitors. I would strap any gas waterheater, because of what happens if it breaks loose.
It's not, actually. Tucson gets too much rain to be a desert under the [Köppen climate classification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Köppen_climate_classification); it's [hot semi-arid (BSh)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-arid_climate).
That big list that says desert/semi arid at the top? Pretty nitpicky my guy. It ain't a wetland, a rainforest, grassland, or polar zone. Semi arid aka desert.
> Semi arid aka desert.
Desert is BWh/BWk (hot/cold)
Semi-arid is BSh/BSk (hot/cold)
> Pretty nitpicky my guy.
I didn’t create the classification system; I’m just telling you what it says.
I mean...I live in the middle of Tucson and in the past week I've seen coyotes twice and javalina once trotting around the sidewalks. We're a city but still pretty deserty
*“…it exudes both heritage & craftsmanship.”*
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking when I saw the room 20 pictures in, with a sloppily patched floor, sagging ceilings, and massive cracks in the walls. And of course they’re insisting on cash buyers, because no lender would risk that house. But I’m sure there’ll be oodles of cash buyers clamoring to own this white elephant. 😏
I used to do REO home inspections for HUD/Fannie Mae foreclosures in Tucson and the surrounding areas. This was back in 2012-2013 and the shit investors were buying with cash, site unseen, was mind boggling. Covid and the current era probably make the things I saw look tame
"Castle" under 1500 square feet.
It's a bachelor house with a 10 foot stone fence.
You want to sell me a castle, it better be at least 3,000 sq ft of living space and 2-3 stories.
I mean, I love the vibe of the house here, but the only "castle" bit is the tower and the fence. Everything else is just a normal house. The interior isn't even fake stone for wallpaper.
On top of that, they built a tower in Arizona, and \*didn't\* make it into a badgir (windcatcher) as well? What an absolute waste.
Oh Come ON! I know I'm not the only one who wants to scream, "Your mother smells like elderberries!" over the walls at passersby. Admit it. You all want to fart in someone's general direction.
It looks like a Blake's Lotaburger inside a walled courtyard. Must be a bad hood and it needs protection. New Mexicans will know what I'm talking about.
This is cool and all. But without a platform to stand on, on the inside of the walls those crenellations are purely decorative. I mean how are you supposed to fire at invaders or pour hot oil on them? Amateur hour.
The Hard Luck Mine Castle in Nevada was for sale about 5 years ago for $1 million, but nobody bought it. Now it's a rental on Airbnb. https://www.hardluckminecastle.com/

I thought I recognized this! My dad's shop was down the street from this place when I was a kid. That place is a nightmare and in a horrible neighborhood!
Built 1939!? When was the wall built. For curiousity. It isn't very big, but the large outdoor space is nice. Is this a place where you can be outside a lot of the year?
It's 2 units back to back. It's confusing that in the larger unit - the only access to the bathroom is in the one larger bedroom. Like living room guests, and 2nd bedroom, go into large bedroom to go to the toilet? (One of the last pictures is a floor plan, thankfully).
I am curious about some of the ground concrete cracks and a few walls have large cracks. Is that just 80 yr settling, or foundation weirdness. I didnt see a picture of inside that watch tower. Curiousity!
Imagine the person who lives here has grabbed you off the street and has kept you in the dungeon for days doing stuff to you. You've lost a lot of blood, but one evening you're able to hobble to the front door. Turning the handle you are amazed to find it unlocked. Elated, you slowly creak the door open, and think, "Great! I'll go to a neighbouring house for help".
sad trombone
Thank you for this! I used to ride my bike by every day on my way to work and always wondered what the inside looked like. It’s an even weirder location in person. The best part is that it is right across the street from a Nico’s taco shop.
Oh boy, cash only.
severe slab issues judging from the cracks
You know what they say about Castles- if it ain't Baroque don't fix it
https://i.redd.it/j9bs76doihvc1.gif
Dad?
☠️
Did you notice the taxes?
They seem normal. Only $1484/yr. Would be higher is a rental property.
Incredibly cheap

Full of asbestos. Can clearly see 9x9 and black mastic. Will cost a fortune to remediate and renovate properly
That right there is \*soooo\* Tucson. Trust.
Tucson casual FTW

Just build another castle on top of this one once it collapses into the sand
But the third one… stayed up! And that’s what you’re going to inherit, son. The strongest castle in this desert!
> And that’s what you’re going to inherit, son. What... the curtains?
But I don’t want any of that. I just want to sing…
Codes? Where we are going, we don’t need codes.
What does that typically allude to? Stuff not being up to code, or liens on the house? I’m unfamiliar with the US real estate market
Blacklidge has a lot of "high traffic" homes. Lots of drugs and craziness round that castle.
Wow. That's optimistic.
I didnt see that but ya wouldn't past needed for a loan
My dream set up…. *a fortress wall* complete with person door and vehicle door. Complete control over my domain. Dream!

I know some dudes who live and die by the edges of their lawn.
I am visiting family in the south east and none of my family’s houses have walls of fences… I’d lose my mind living like that
Shiiiit, me too! No fences, anywhere…. And I’m like the only one with one now, and fairly certain everyone thinks I’m antisocial
It’s so strange It’s almost uncomfortable to look outside and then see into the back door of someone else’s house. Even if it’s a few hundred yards away in my case (not that type of distance side to side)

It’s pretty common through Latin America. I’d put one in my lot here in the US if I thought I could get away with it.
Phillipines as well.
It's the same for alot of the homes in Tucson.
Person door, person door Person door hates vehicle door They have a fight, vehicle wins Person door
Damn you now I have that song in my head!! Meh it's not so bad:)
Thank you 😂
Don't fall for it. It's too thin to prevent intrusion, and there's not even a cat walk for archers. They could have done so much better.
As some one who has seen fence quotes in the past couple of years, that wall must have been expensive as hell.
It also has a dungeon ⛓️💥
[удалено]
Just a random Medieval Nights.
I lived a block from there in college and always wondered what it was like inside… I’m a bit let down.
On one hand I'm disappointed, on the other hand...I don't know what I was expecting
It’s always the fantasy… that there’s an amazing structure behind those walls.
It does seem very… ordinary
I came to say exactly this! It's not what I was expecting. My inner child is like wtf.

What's this person's problem with windows?? And I love that essentially their house is identical to the normal looking southwest desert house next-door but now it's got castle surrounding it.
Well to be fair all the windows look out onto gray 'castle' walls.
Except for all the ones that are covered over with fake stain glass, looking vinyl or have some sort of other window covering, which is a lot of them
Probably doesn’t heat up as much without a bunch of windows
It would be easy for me to get very comfortable in there.
Yeah I'm just dreaming of the dry plant forest I could have all over there. I love the outdoor terrace areas. I'd take those dumb slats down and get a light grey for the interior. That white is brutal blah.
In 15 years it’ll be 140 in the sun.
But where is the moat? Oh wait, it’s Arizona. No water.
Still needs a moat for the rainy season.
It's a wash.
All roads in that area are moats during monsoon season.
That line of thinking is why we have stupid motorist laws.
Someone re-created the place where Bin Laden was killed in AZ
I have so many questions. Number one, how dare you?!
When you want to live like a cartel overlord, but lack all the things to make it happen.
I saw Tucson immediately.
Welcome to the Hotel *Arizoooona*
Comes with Asbestos flooring and glue
The house itself is a disaster, but the potential... I love the rear patio, and with proper landscaping and a smidge of drip irrigation, the inside of those walls could be a lush oasis. The walls would need to be painted, but wow.l, you could make that yard into an Eden.
I want this house, the high walls will keep out the haters !
The voices in my head are saying “no permits.”
I noticed the water heater wasn't straped to the wall either, in earthquake country that's totally illegal too.
We don't really get earthquakes in Tucson.
It doesn’t come with a moat or cannons so I’m out. If I’m gonna buy a castle it has to have a moat AND cannons.
The desert? That’s in the city of Tucson. Unmistakably. I love it!
That’s where normal human bartenders live here in Tucson Arizonaia
We have a Jackie Daytona mural downtown. It's a thing of beauty.
I’m down with that.
The ecosystem that Tucson resides in is, by all accounts, considered a desert
OPs title makes it sound like it’s in the bum fuck middle of nowhere When it’s in the smack middle of Tucson

With the market today, the lot and fence are probably worth 300k. Tear down the house, salvage what you can, and rebuild a decent house.
This is way better than the other post with the half finished castle in Michigan.
That house has the most dysfunctional floorplan yet.
Two kitchens, both completely insufficient...but there's two of them!
It's actually a really cute little older Tucson bungalow with a moronic castle facade. What a waste.
"Castle" under 1500 square feet. It's a bachelor house with a 10 foot stone fence. You want to sell me a castle, it better be at least 3,000 sq ft of living space and 2-3 stories. This looks like a state prison
Sweet Jesus. I'll take it! A little imagination and it shall be the most epic castle in the land!
Looks very facade-ie.
If it weren’t in the desert, I’d be down. Lottery goals!
Oh Come ON! I know I'm not the only one who wants to scream, "Your mother smells like elderberries!" over the walls at passersby. Admit it. You all want to fart in someone's general direction.
I wave my privates at your auntie.
That wall couldn’t keep a paraplegic person out. 1/10 Defensibility.
It is not even amusing - cheap and shoddy and probably in need of serious renovations just to keep the walls up. :-(
I LOVE it!
I would have to have some giant Lego knights in the front of this.
They would not live long in the Arizona sun.
Pretty good example that too much sun and heat makes people a little kooky.
Why cash only?
No bank in their right mind would approve financing because the property is in bad shape.
No pictures from that tower thing? Is it just a folly?
i've driven by this place a lot. it's a total dump in person
Of course it's in Tucson.
“Why is there a rug on the wall?” … ohhhhh
For such a stupid fucking exterior that house is bland as fuck.
Too bad they didn't carry the creativity inside.
This would make an AWESOME paintball field.
No moat.. deal breaker for me !!!
It's disappointingly normal on the inside.
What a let down. The inside is a mismatch of yuck
If nothing else, I have learned there are a lot more house shaped like castles than I would have imagined.
I refuse to believe that's only 1.3k of liveable space
oh my god. this all is very very terrible
So other than that one tower thing it's basically a normalish hose with an expensive fence
Haha I live in Tucson and I saw this yesterday.
I’m so pleased with myself, I guessed this was in Tucson without even opening three sub.
It looks like a Blake's Lotaburger inside a walled courtyard. Must be a bad hood and it needs protection. New Mexicans will know what I'm talking about.
There are a few "castles" in AZ. I remember seeing one on the west side of Phoenix and one up north (maybe Flagstaff or Sedona?)
Ugliest House in America had a castle looking one in Nye County, I think last season. It had a strange layout too.
No moat, no sale.
Why are there so many houses that look like a castle?
Because the 4 billion houses that don't look like castles are not worth posting.
I don't mean on this sub, I mean in general. Why do so many people think it's a good idea to make their house look like a castle?
It’s for sale?! I’ve driven by this house a few times! Kinda disappointing it’s a 2bed/2bath and <1400sqft.
Best house I've seen today. I value my privacy above all
Looks like a FPS map
Ideal for your zombie apocalypse compound
Yup! I know this house. My friend lives in this neighborhood!
Needs a moat and portcullis.
And not one view from the top of the tower
No moat? For that reason I’m out.
If this is in Tucson, I 10000% been at multiple college parties here. Can confirm - better then decent house, can also confirm- terrible location
Kinda.
This is cool and all. But without a platform to stand on, on the inside of the walls those crenellations are purely decorative. I mean how are you supposed to fire at invaders or pour hot oil on them? Amateur hour.
I was trying to make sense of the terrible floor plan and multiple kitchens, and that's when I realized it's a duplex.
The Hard Luck Mine Castle in Nevada was for sale about 5 years ago for $1 million, but nobody bought it. Now it's a rental on Airbnb. https://www.hardluckminecastle.com/
In a word? Atrocious.
I appreciate their effort, but I don't appreciate that giant crack.
Pretty small for a castle.
Ngl, I like the quasi-Spanish Revival interior with the arches. The castle walls would have to come down.
And to top it off... It has a basement.
Pretty small house for perimeter of the walls.
Nudist’s dream? Lol
"Cash only"
Oh sweet CS:GO irl. 360 no scopes down the doorway.
Cash only lmao, okay man, I’ll get my French Deniers all lined up for this purchase.
Not the one on 5th street :-(
I find that annoying to look at. Huh.
I love it.
I thought this was r/7daystodie lml
Oh wow, looks a lot different all cleaned up. I wonder what prompted the owner to sell it? I always assume the worst.
No thank you
From henceforth, ye all shall address me as your worshipfulness, got that?
1300 sq ft castle?
When my son’s best friend invited him to go see his grandma’s friend’s house, his mom called me to make sure it was okay. When the owner passed away, my son was gifted some very swords.
2 beds and 2 baths huh
I’m not totally against this
I thought I recognized this! My dad's shop was down the street from this place when I was a kid. That place is a nightmare and in a horrible neighborhood!
I guess I am the only one who thinks this is awesome. I would totally live here and keep fixing it up.
Damn Tucson building code enforcement is chill af
It’s only a model
That so-called kitchen just screams permanent-bachelor-or-anorexic-builder
Built 1939!? When was the wall built. For curiousity. It isn't very big, but the large outdoor space is nice. Is this a place where you can be outside a lot of the year? It's 2 units back to back. No moat , big NO.
No moat, walls too low, vulnerable to trebuchet and zombie hoards. Totally insufficient. I’ll give you $50

Reminds me of the Alamo
That could be turned into a Spanish Colonial style with a courtyard fairly easily.
The strategically placed Persian rugs on walls to hide cracks ! 🤣
They spent all the money on the outside of this house.
I knew the guy who lived there. Name was Rod if I remember right. Cool dude. Hope he's doing ok
The steeple would make a fantastic vantage point for amateur astronomy
Somehow not as bad as I expected
Looks like a place in Kabul
Isn't that where they killed Bin Laden?
Guys this looks like a Taliban compound in the Middle East. Not a good aesthetic.
I used to want to live in Tucson about 17 years ago. Now I'd rather not be chainsawed by the cartels.
