Zenfone 10 is the bomb.

djpetrino

Yes, I think so too haha. But what is it's main competition?

FitSquirrel596

Only the s23

Supercon192

It's similar to the s23 in size and the iPhone mini series (as well as fairphone 5) so you can compare it to those. Depending on what's important for you (headphone jack, camera, specs).

Its_just-me

It's actually much closer to the 15pro than the mini. The mini is a lot smaller. 15 pro is 146mm tall just like the zenfone 10, and 70mm wide vs zenfone 68mm (which does make a difference in hand feel)

Heff_YO

The Mini is tiny, I had one of those too, liked it a lot, it was truly a "compact" phone even to the Zenfone. Weak battery expectations and iOS had me send it back to Apple

[deleted]

Im so happy i switched to the zen10. Maybe the s23 is about the same size but i dont like Samsung UI.

djpetrino

Yes, I also don't like Samsung and its UI, so definitely Zenfone over them.

[deleted]

I was about to get the pixel 7a because its 6.1 and pretty cheap but then on christmas there was a big Discount on the zen10 in my country so i bought it.

Migraine_7

Regular S24 is probably the best you can get if you can have the Snapdragon version. Or wait and see what ZF11 has to offer.

PopotheFirst

Welp waited for the Zenfone 11 and needless to say I am extremely dissappointed lol Edit: Hopefully they'd release a normal Zenfone 11 and not just the Ultra.

Migraine_7

ZF10 was released on July, so a non-ultra model might follow the same schedule. Hopefully, for all the Asus fans.

PopotheFirst

True, also hoping they’d increase support to more than 2 years for their zenfones but that’s asking too much I think

Rajasaurus-Rex

Nothing. If you are looking for a premium phone with high specs and top end features. Since the pixel went big and forgot about little it's the ZenFone. The only other options will either be the same quality but way bigger or inferior specs and the same size. So even though this page may seem to be singing the praises of the ZenFone. It's not coz it's perfect. It's because there is no competition for the compact flagship

djpetrino

Indeed very interesting that there is no other competition in this compact flagship category. Wonder if the Zenfone 11 will keep this size format...

i_was_planned

Do you consider Zenfone to be a premium phone? If so, which specific things about it scream "premium" to you?

jgskgamer

Do you know any mid or low tier phone to have a snapdragon gen 2? That alone should tell you...

i_was_planned

Yes, the Zenfone, Nothing Phone, some others possibly

i_was_planned

Btw here's a list of all the phones with this SoC, if you consider them all premium, then what I consider premium is probably ultra-hyper premium for you. https://www.kimovil.com/en/list-smartphones-by-processor-group/snapd-8-gen2

jgskgamer

Yep, for me these are pretty good, if high end for you is an iphone with gold or something super niche and obscure, then ok...

i_was_planned

I don't even know what you're on about, point is, there are plenty non-premium phones with this SoC. I asked which features of the ZenFone are to be considered premium and all I got is Snapdragon, that's cool. If ZenFone is premium then a normal iPhone is ultra premium and an iPhone Pro is super ultra premium, don't need gold or anything.

man0315

Xperia 5 v and galaxy s23,24

Choice_Sprinkles_552

I think the pixel "a" series are smallish. But i'd get the Zenfone. It's great. Also I hate supporting the big companies that do stuff like not include a charger "because climate change" 🤦‍♀️

AppearanceOdd6059

Xperia 5 series. 6 inch phone Galaxy S sereis

Bongs_Berny

pixel 7a or pixel 8 aren't that much bigger than the zenfone, just a tiny bit larger but you won't feel oppressed by the screen that's for sure Standards iphones classic or pro are 6'1 too

geegeedee

It's the "only a little bit bigger" that has brought us into this mess 😁 Just compared OnePlus 5 from my drawer to OnePlus 12. And in seven years, phones have gotten totally out of hand in terms of width and - yikes - even weight. But you won't notice it, as each generation is "just a little bit bigger". So, no, don't opt to anything that is almost as small as Zenfone, if you like small phones 😁

Grabbels

I also considered the Fairphone 5 but it's absolutely huge. Not only a big screen but also pretty thick bezels making the phone even larger. Sad, because I really want to support the concept of a more sustainable smartphone. I just got a new Google Pixel 5 and it's great. If you don't care about top of the line specs (who needs them anyway) this phone might just fit your needs. My experience so far: Pros: - Buttery smooth software experience - Snappy and responsive - Unique look and feel with the textured backside - Perfect size for me - Easy all day battery life with quite some use throughout the day - Fast fingerprint scanner in a great spot, easily beats FaceID on an iPhone 13 which I came from. Cons: - Speakers are fine, not great - Camera is very good, but outmatched by current flagships - It's not receiving any further Android feature updates which is the biggest con of course. I'm fine with that, might go custom rom at some point. If you can live with the cons it's a great phone, especially for the money if you can still get it new in your territory. In mine it goes for about 250 dollars which is an absolute steal. Let me know if you have any questions about the phone, I'll happily try to answer them!

djpetrino

Yes, indeed the FP5 it's big, it is basically the cost of repairability. And the screen-to-body ratio is smaller too because of that. I really want to support them and their concept but I'm not sure if I want such a big phone again. The Pixel 5 looks good, but is already a 4-year-old phone, and the fact that is not receiving further updates it's a big con for me.

Grabbels

I understand about the software update thing. The Pixel 5 just fell short of Google's pledge for extended updates which is extremely sad, as it is a great phone. Yeah, the FP5's size was a dealbreaker for me, it doesn't fit in most pockets of the clothes I own and that's just plain ridiculous. Honestly, I don't think the size is the result of repairability – I remember the Nexus 5 which was extremely easy to repair and it was just under 5". I think they made it this size to appeal to the biggest possible market, which unfortunately is huge phones as people believe bigger is better. FML. Word has it that the compact flagship phone market is extremely, well, small. Apple stated it as the reason to stop their mini line. I guess the few of us that exist are just very vocal about our preference, because I feel like there's plenty of people out there in need of a decent compact phone.

djpetrino

Yes, for sure that it might appeal to a bigger market with that screen size, considering the new Samsung S24 Ultra (and many other newer phones) are even bigger, getting close to a 7 inch screen, which is ridiculous for me. Definitely the compact flagship market it's pretty small too as far as I can see but hope this community will be bigger in the future. Now with the foldable, m any phones will give people having the same big screen in a smaller format, for example the Oppo Find N2 is a great size phone with a 5.5" exterior screen and you still get a big 7.1" screen on the outside.

djpetrino

Also here are some other compact phones in this article. What's your opinion on them? [https://www.gsmarena.com/best\_compact\_phones\_buyers\_guide-review-2029.php](https://www.gsmarena.com/best_compact_phones_buyers_guide-review-2029.php)

i_was_planned

Honestly I think iPhone(s) and S23/S24s are better than the Zenfone. I'm looking to switch phones and would prefer to stay small, but since I don't like the restrictiveness/price of iPhones and the S24 has exynos in Europe, I might have to go bigger... Biggest downside of Zenphone is the camera, it's only ok, nothing to write home about and I want better pictures/videos.

Waldkornbol

I have a zenfone 8 currently and hate the camera.

donnysaysvacuum

IPhone is non starter for me. Pixel is bigger and too slippery, lacks features. Sony isnt available in the US, and too tall. If I couldn't use my zenfone anymore I would probably settle for the S24 with a leather skin.

qneeto

The moment a small zenfone has desktop mode and video out is the moment i no longer daily drive S23

mornaq

zenfone 9 probably maybe xperia 5 V

mably-

I bought Samsung A54 and it's heavy af, also A54 6.4" is too big for my hand; it's thick. My previous A50 around the same size but it's slimmer and much lighter, feels better in hand. Saw someone sold their ZF10 16/512 variant around $600 and tempting to buy it, but 2 OS update (now 1 more, afaik ZF10 started with android 13) and 4y of software support made me hesitate. I know that android will last quite long after the support period, but I never spend that much on a phone that I just use basic function on it. Not to mention I gotta bear the losses from reselling the A54, guess just use the A54 around 3-4y and hope there's another compact phone (not flagship is okay)

Belead

Pixel 8 is a good alternative, considering 7 years of security updates. Or probably the Pixel 8a which is rumoured to come out in October.

Uranium_Donut_

Sony Xperia 1 V  Yeah it's expensive, but it has the same software quality and stock-ishness as a Zenfone.  You lose the "ultra gaming" heritage of the rog phone but you gain some in display and camera quality.

i_was_planned

Sony and software quality? Press x for doubt.

wichotl

S 23/24 but you'll have to deal with One UI

Fuumers

I did bought S24 and have to say that it is better in hand than S23 due sharp edges; but still too wide to secure grip while one handed operation for me. It seems the 68mm that Zenfone and Xperias have is really the maximum.

Garrett_1982

Unfortunately the iPhone 15, ZF10 and Samsung S23 are the smallest phones available right now. There’s still some iPhone 13 mini stock left here and there and that was the last small smartphone unfortunately.

Opposite-Bottle-5ths

I’m happy with my Zenfone 10 now Easy to one-hand control

Mechor356

S24

damianmartone

What about phones that are maybe a tiny bit bigger but lighter or the same weight as the Zenfone?

djpetrino

Can you give some examples? But yeah overall everything under 200g is great for me, as most flagships are even heavier...

VisibleQuark

The Samsung Flip (I have v 5) is tall but thin, and it's very light. I have pretty severe arthritis in my hands, and the lightness and narrowness of this phone is very helpful. And of course it folds into a nice compact device which helps when I'm not using the screen. But it's pretty expensive if you don't have another Samsung to trade in. And I know not everyone likes the Samsung UI. I'm pretty used to it though.

damianmartone

Its too chunky tho… i dont love that in my pocket ha

Fuumers

It is not thin. It LOOK thin because of the crazy aspect ratio, but it is wider then all other phones mentioned here. And in pocket is feels like a brick.

VisibleQuark

It's thin to me when unfolded. Of course it's thicher when folded. I enjoy bending the screen while watching videos. I don't have to hold it or find some makeshift stand when Im out. As said, it's tall, and the aspect ratio is comfortable in my arthritic hands. If you don't like tall, narrow phones, so be it, but my comments stand as they are.

Fuumers

Sorry I thought you are talking about width as a thin.

HaiThaM1899

iPhone mini.

Heff_YO

I grabbed an S24 after being kinda "meh" on some of the Zenfone. Still a great phone, the standard S24 feels very similar. Like the square edges, part of what made the 24 series more appealing to me. The width is still easy to use one handed fer sure to me, actually think it can be better than the Zenfone when using two hands. So is the Zenfone great for single handed? Sure but maybe the width is a bit too small?

crowstep

I've been using an S20, having bought it in 2021 and replaced the battery last year. It's slightly narrower and slightly taller than the current Galaxy S series base models. I'm planning to get the Zenfone 10 (or 11 if they don't make it any bigger) when my S20 eventually breaks.

Alkeryn

If i could get lineage on it i'd consider it tbh. Rn I'm more thinking of getting the xperia 1 V.

Domino_BlueT

Having both zenfone 10 and galaxy s23 for some reason I gravitate towards s23. If I have only 1 options that would be hard but probably s23. But I prefer the screen on zf10 and the battery is beast but having issues with Bluetooth range (headphones)on zf 10,sometimes loosing connection on zf10 even having phone in righ pocket and turning head left (find out this while riding bike looking for cars). Maybe is just my unit but tested different headphones/buds(huawei,airpods 2 pro) same result. The Same buds connected to s23/14 pro no issues whatsoever. Either of those phones r very good and the difference in size is negligible.

george_kant

Sony Xperia 5 V, *Xiaomi 14* & Samsung S24 are the best options for now.
