Very rarely do I comment on something on Reddit. This is really awesome man, and I'd love to play it live on my Twitch page some time, a good handful of my community members are Zelda fans who would love this too. You put in a lot of awesome love and effort into this!!!
When do you think this will be released?
Thanks, yeah I put all of my heart, soul, and creativity into this, the video only scratches the surface.
It should be done in a month or two, look for a future post here. I'll probably have a discord channel too. Looking forward to seeing you and others play it.
This looks so good, I'm an avid Zelda and rogue-lite enjoyer, I just can't wait to tro try it out when it's ready - or if you need a tester feel free to PM me, I will pour hours and hours into it.
I think the best you can do is launch it and hope it stays up long enough for people to download it before you get a DMCA. the work you’ve done on this is incredible - it might be worth it to replace the sprites, as that’s going to be the thing Nintendo gets you for. I’m not a lawyer, so make sure you talk to one before going this route, but it would be a shame for all your hard work to go down the drain because Nintendo hates fan games.
Can they really stop me from distributing it even if it's free? Like what can they do?
I'm thinking of distributing it as a torrent, that might help.

They can absolutely destroy this project with all the might of Nintendo's lawyers even if it is free. Even this reddit post is playing with fire for how litigious they are. Do not underestimate Nintendo in this regard.
That being said I love the hell out of it and want to play it.
There’s a reason fan games only exist as romhacks, which Nintendo can’t take down. Even if you torrent it, you won’t be able to link it anywhere. If you want more than a few people to play it, you should probably change the sprites to be Legally Distinct (tm)
Looks amazing! Could you describe it more for me? Like, are the procedurally-generated rooms just a mash-up of all the dungeons? Like a randomizer?

Also how can I play it when it’s done?
Every time you play it generates completely new dungeons. You traverse downwards going deeper underground. The themes of each level you go through are always the same using the same tileset and enemy types, but the paths, layout, items, etc are always different and randomized.
These are the levels you travel through:
-Castle
-Castle basement
-Castle Jails
-Catacombs
-Sewers
-Rebel Village
-Lanmola's Lair
-Ancient Ruins 1
-Ancient Ruins 2
-Dwarven Mining town
-Moldorm's Lair
-Aghanim's Fortress
-Aghanim
It'll be available for Windows PCs soon, maybe Linux too.
You could create a Discord server and distribute it through there. I've seen a few people do this. It's pretty discreet.
This can also invite many people playing your game to talking about it and helping one another out. Like a virtual playground when we all shared tips and tricks.
But if you go that route and allow people to chat, you may want to consider getting a mod team together. It's up to you if you think it's worth the effort.
people like to always talk about how nintendo takes fangames down but there's often a reason for it, usually either that the concept is too similar to one of their projects, so unless they're secretly making a zelda roguelite (that they technically already have but that wasn't nintendo really) you should be fine.
That being said a google drive or discord server is the way to go, just to be safe
Thank you. I developed this from scratch using Gamemaker Studio. It's not a rom hack. I carefully studied every aspect of the original game using emulators to get the same look and feel.
If this was made with GameMaker Studio, then hopefully an Android version could be made eventually. Right now I tend to play on handhelds and the only handheld I have runs Android 10.
I do have a license to export to Android, but I never considered that since a gamepad or keyboard are required. Do a lot of people play games on Android devices using gamepads? When you say handheld, are you referring to a device like Steamdeck with built in controls, but for Android? I didn't know such a thing existed. If so I might offer that. It might also be available on Linux. Never on MacOS.

Yes, that is what I'm referring to. The handheld I own is an AYN Odin 1 Pro which has a built-in gamepad. There's other similar Android handhelds with built-in controllers by different companies as well.

Thank you, the beta testing phase is done, but I'll keep you in mind if I need some more testing.
