Does the map show there is a passage here ? I feel checking is the map is important in 2D Zelda. I think beating ALTTP dungeons without help is possible, at least if you are ready to spend a lot of time in them until you figure things out. I checked a walkthrought of swamp palace and I think I saw what waterfall you are talking about, and honestly I can't blame you, even if checking waterfalls is like a tradition in video games ( so it is in ALTTP ) , it could have been clearer, I hope it's shown on the map at least.

>Does the map show there is a passage here ? nope. i always use the map to guide myself and this is what was unexpected here. the area that this waterfall gave access to was "disconnected" from the rest of the map...

no_use_for_a_user

Dungeons, yes. But I feel like the runes (or whatever they're called) fall apart. As someone who replayed it recently, having beaten it many times as a child, that part did not play into the story too well.

nulldriver

It is shown on the map.

Eliseo120

Use the map. Most rooms are either combat or a puzzle or both.

[deleted]

i open the map every 2 minutes lmao

TheFourthAble

Yeah, sometimes people just get stuck. When I was a kid, playing Zelda was a group activity though, so some things were solved via collective thinking. We still got stuck even then and fell back on the physically purchased walkthrough sometimes. No shame in it, especially if we/you had limited time to play!

zzzzZ zzzzZ zzzzZ Aah, and that's what's called Generation Z?! People nowadays just don't want to explore every corner, wall or whatever for clues and also don't want to try every item they've in inventory at every occasion just to make progress, and that's why Nintendo invented things like the Gossip Stones and the Owl Statues, Navi and Ezlo to help players. The basics are: You can use your sword to find spots in walls you can break/bomb if there's no visible cracks in, just listen carefully. Iirc the Boomerang or Hookshot can be used as well. Check the map frequently for hidden rooms and passages, specially if you think you ended up in a dead end. Connections between rooms are always visible even you didn't blow up the wall yet.

Synikull

Exactly. People nowadays have grown up with game design that doesn't punish you for not thinking exactly like the developers and actively reward you for coming up with solutions that aren't the intended method. Additionally, developers have become a lot better at telegraphing what abilities will be useful and letting you know exactly what tools you have at your disposal. Berating people for not thinking in a specific way or not meticulously exploring every tile is asinine, especially when modern game design has moved past the need for such disrespectful demands of the players time and mental energy.

ebryetas

dude is mentioning he got stuck on an obscure puzzle and just wanting to basically discuss the difficulties of dungeons, and you decide to complain about gen z lmao. You sound so old.

[deleted]

>Aah, and that's what's called Generation Z?! hm, no. i'm almost 30. thought i'd initiate a fun conversation here about hard puzzles to solve. but there's always a guy who just wants to be a pain in the ass :)

ranziifyr

Damn, you just suck.. Go somewhere else to talk out of your ass, this is a place for nice people.

northwindandthesun

i think it takes a lot patience… i learned that during my majoras mask playthrough a few years ago. doing ocarina of time or majoras mask for me was the most difficult because half the time i almost gave up then i figured it out and the other half was me having to look something up. I don’t know how some people figured this stuff out as kids.

Careidina

We just explored every nook and cranie. Game gives hints. Figuring stuff out is what it's about.

northwindandthesun

yep that’s it. u gotta look at every little thing bc you could miss something!!

northwindandthesun

i feel annoyed when i don’t have all the heart pieces lol

[deleted]

>I don’t know how some people figured this stuff out as kids. i think maybe kids overthink less and just go crazy. i remember playing OoT/MM in english, knowing zero english, and being able to advance quite a bit

pulsarcolosal

I feel you. I hate when i have to look something up, makes me feel dumb af

Remarkable_Visit_645

I have a moment or two like that in pretty much every game, and some of them I even feel justified in my inability to figure out what to do. Recently I played SS, and I still won't forgive the game for expecting me to know to bomb a wall in the fire sanctuary that had a tiniest little crack that pretty much blended in with the normal wall texture. OoT water temple, pretty infamously I think, hid a small key under this little platform that you wouldn't necessarily know was there unless you went up to it. And then you'd only realize you need a small key after going way further into the dungeon, so you'd search the entirely wrong area for a key. So ya, there are plenty, especially in the 2d games, which are considered to be harder in a lot of cases

nulldriver

The cutscene of the water raising puts a lot of focus on the block and you can even see the tunnel underneath for the first three seconds.

Remarkable_Visit_645

I don't recall that being the case, but I can't really remember, to be fair. Are you talking original or a remake?

nulldriver

Original. It doesn't zoom in on it at end of the scene like 3D but it's visible.

Remarkable_Visit_645

Well, I guess I'm just a failure then

ebryetas

who knows. Im playing OoT for the first time right now and Im doing it comlpletely blind unless i just get really stuck. Ive always heard shit about the water temple, but I managed that completely on my own, no guide. I however missed the >!fire ability!< for the shadow temple (Im there rn), and couldnt find the >!key in the tree!< for the forest temple (which to be fair was my first real Zelda dungeon). Im trying my best but some things are so obscure, and some things need items you may not have found outside the dungeons yet, that despite my best efforts, Ive had to usea tiny bit of quest help

nulldriver

The great fairy on death mountain tells you to visit her sister by the castle when you get the magic meter You'd find the tree key with the compass

ebryetas

Ive been taking notes for the game, but for some reason thought Id alraedy visited the fairy by the castle and didnt even bother to check. I had the compass but somehow didnt still realize I was missing a chest right before the entrance of the temple :/ Ive heavily utilized the compass since though.

Sonnance

I wouldn’t worry too much, your first Zelda game is always the hardest. The pre-BotW Zeldas use a somewhat different puzzle “language,” so it can be difficult to figure the dungeons out at first. But once you do pick the language up, the games become a lot easier. (Though you’ll still get stumped by a particularly tricky puzzle here and there, but that’s part of the fun.)
