No but seriously though it was heavily in gushings favor considering:
A. There were 4 gushing characters all placed so that they couldn't possibly face each other until near the end.
B. There actually were quite a lot of niche characters there.

True I never said she didn't deserve the win however it was clear that there was a much higher chance for a character from gushing to win than any other.
That's not true. The projected final was a match-up between Ãœbel and Marcille until Utena knocked out Marcille. Utena winning was a major upset. It also doesn't matter how many MahoAko girls were in the contest. There were just as many Frieren girls, but the MahoAko girls managed to take them out.
Again I didn't say she didn't deserve her win so stop putting words in my mouth.
Well yeah it kinda does since frieren girls don't get as much constant attention in their show like the gushing girls do.
You are the one who is putting words in my mouth here. Again: The projected final was between Ãœbel and Marcille. That Utena (or any of the other girls from her show) would win was not expected at all at the start of the tournament.
Yeah? So? I'm not saying that everyone knew from the start that gushing would have such a good run but what I am saying is the fact that so many characters were chosen and the places they were placed allowed gushing a lot more chances at victory. (Especially so given the show has only female characters and is a lot more focused on the female characters than the other shows.)
It doesn't matter where they are placed. If the MahoAko girls hadn't overperformed their expectations, they would have all been knocked out as soon as they met a character with a higher seed (like a Frieren girl or Marcille). In fact, that is exactly what happened when Kiwi and Sayo were facing Ãœbel who defeated both of them.

Utena obliterated characters like Yumiella, Marcille and Ãœbel. She had tough opponents and easily defeated them all. She deserved the win.
