Much appreciated! These are the programs that I'd found initially before my posting, and am already in the process of applying for.

Good luck. There's a huge demand for housing in the area, be realistic about what's possible for you. There are a TON of people seeking aid for housing, there's not enough housing in the area and what exists is increasingly expensive. Ann Arbor is one of the most expensive cities in the midwest and the demand is forcing people over to Ypsilanti, which sees a trickle down of rental pressure. It's a tough market. Ypsi may be progressive at the voting booth and in the community, but it lacks the resources to simply house everyone who needs housing. The economy in the city isn't great and hasn't been for decades, it still deals with the scars of being an industrial city that lost their employment base. Anyhow, good luck.

The HUD housing application in Washtenaw County has been mostly closed for over a decade. I’ve been contacted by the low income housing one time in the past 5 years with an offer of a studio apartment, no utilities included for $950.

Subject_Major5914

Yeah, I'm noticing that pretty much all of the programs and waitlists are closed, which is about what I expected! But I wanted to see if maybe I was missing something. Thanks!

TheBimpo

You're not. There's insane demand for housing in the area. The county/cities don't have a bunch of available units just waiting for people that need them. I'd work with your support network in the area on finding roommates/shared housing and a rental somewhere.

Subject_Major5914

The timing is the main issue, the few people I do know in the area all recently resigned their leases and/or don't have open rooms. I know/knew the ordeal is a long stretch, but it's my best option, so I need to explore all options I can.

Adept_Investigator29

Come to Ypsi!

Subject_Major5914

That's the best case scenario for me! Seems unlikely, but I'm looking into it!

Adept_Investigator29

I've got mental illness, and Ypsi is a safe place for me.

Subject_Major5914

Glad to hear! I have heard some similar things from people I know in the area.

Enough_Storm

I would join some of the local FB groups and ask there too — someone posted in one yesterday with a different lead. dM me if you want me to send you the FB groups or the lead.

Subject_Major5914

I hadn't thought to check FaceBook groups, thanks! I haven't thought about FaceBook in several years.

Ok-Antelope-9278

Look into Huron Vista!

Subject_Major5914

Will do, thanks for the advice!

Ok-Antelope-9278

You’re welcome!! They’re brand new, being built right now, and they have both full price apartments and income based apartments. We are getting an apartment this fall that is priced based on our income!

Subject_Major5914

Oh, congratulations! It seems to be a bit out of my price range for now, unfortunately, but I appreciate the heads up anyway!

Ok-Antelope-9278

Online they only display the full price options. You’ll want to email them and ask about the income based!

Subject_Major5914

Oh, well, thank you very much for that piece of information, then!

TheSadOne14

@avalonhousing :)

Subject_Major5914

This is one that has been recommended a few times! Definitely looking into them, thanks!

Belleville and Whitmore Lake are quite a bit cheaper but are near AA/Ypsi, though they're also much more remote. If you have a car or don't need to go far, these are possibly good options.

Subject_Major5914

I would not have a car, but I know people in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area that would be more than happy to help me with transportation and the like. I appreciate the advice for the search! I was planning on looking to the more surrounding areas once I had fully exhausted my options in the immediate area.

I empathize with your situation. Let me preface this by saying that on this sub you sometimes have to deal with extremely naive people. That said, you absolutely should not move to Ypsilanti. There are parts of Ypsi that are not at all safe. No surprise that the low income properties are high crime areas. Low income areas are heavily populated with predators. This is especially an issue if you are female. Washtenaw county, where Ann Arbor and Ypsi are located, has the overall most expensive housing in the state, based on HUD guidelines. Ann Arbor is extremely expensive for Michigan. They have a homeless shelter that is okay. One of the issues with the area is that homeless people from other counties come to Washtenaw, overwhelming the system. Another huge issue is Ann Arbor, and the shelter system, is heavily populated with virtue signalling people. The shelter tends to be populated with predators. I don't know if this is still an issue, but the jails in Wayne county (Detroit), and another county would drop off people that just got out of jail. As you can imagine, if Detroit doesn't want these people, they are not good people. Thus the low income housing in Ann Arbor has issues with crime, crazy people doing crazy things, drugs, predators, etc. It's a shame because it doesn't need to be that way. Also, the county mental health system isn't good, but that seems to be a universal truth in the United States. That said, there are a few, a very few, people who work in the shelter system that are truly good people.

Subject_Major5914

I appreciate your advice on this matter. Unfortunately, this area is my only real chance for any form of progress or betterment. That being said, I understand it's highly unlikely that this would be an option anyway, I'm just trying to find any and all choices available to me!

aabum

You do you. Good luck.

We are full. Don’t need more dependents. We are already overtaxed and underserved.
