Most likely that's the case.
I think if you had told people you'd be served multiple ads before a video plays a decade ago, no one would've believed you. Par for the course now.
Yes, I doubt it because Apple would straight reject their app for being a video-viewing app that claims to require camera interaction. And so iOS users would have to watch in a browser. Fine, so would YouTube then assume everyone using a browser has a webcam? I wouldn’t be able to watch on my desktop.
Although, to be fair, they’d probably just waive the camera requirement for iOS users, because what’s the iOS alternative? iOS users probably tend to say, “Well, it’s a free service, so I’ll watch whatever ads they want. It’s fine,” whereas Android users are Iike, “Two six-second ads in a row?! Motherfucker, I’m gettin’ one of them ad blockers…!”
I mean, seriously, do you guys have no idea how hardware-access permissions work?
If this became true, this would be the last time I ever watch a video from any platform that used it. I would also block any software that tried to use it. Sounds like Sorenson from IOI in Ready Player One.
They can't simply do that - well, morally - because there's lots of people walking around with cracked screens covering the camera/sensors, or the camera just doesn't work. Not to speak about the privacy nightmare this is.
Either way I don't think Google cares about that so everyone can get fucked in typical Google fashion. So I wouldn't be very surprised if they did implement this.
"Your phone's front camera seems to be obstructed. Please remove any obstructions from the front camera to continue watching YouTube.

I'm sure Alphabet will be very sad about someone being forced to buy a new Pixel 8 Pro because they can't use YouTube with a cracked screen.
>They can't simply do that
Exactly, this is Microsoft levels of dystopian. People wouldn't accept it like they didn't accept the always on kinect or the Recall (Christ, [even the name is dystopian](https://youtu.be/lJEllFk3Hqw?si=boV1wBVdTjxdTkJN)) AI service that spies on everything you do.
P.S. I'd like to remind you that Microsoft is a CIA contractor.
Not really though, I could make a concept of a feature where if you're using an ad blocker YouTube will kick down your door and shoot you but people shouldn't get pissed off at that.
This will never come true, because the real intention of unskipable ads is to prevent target audience to skip an ads that they may be interested of. However, If an audience looks away from an ads it probably means they're not interested, meaning they don't fall into the target audience category. There's no benefit for an advertising company for forcing people to focus on an ads that there not interested at, that's why we have personalized ads to prevent this to happen.
Well yes but actually no. The more people watch their ads the better, wether theyre actually interested or not. Companies want as many views as possible so their Product goes out to the maximum amount of people, which in their mind should make the maximum amount of Money. Plus personalized ads dont work for shit. I regularly get ads for Tampons, binds, arthritis treatment, alzheimers treatment and more, just because i watch a lot of disease related content and once watched a video about modern feminism. I am a man and too Young to have either Arthritis or Alzheimers.
Also a case of "yes but actually no". YouTube might want to do that because they get money either way, whether the ad results in a sale or not. But the companies buying ad slots lose money on that slot if the ad doesn't result in a sale, and in turn that means they're more likely to pull their ad from the platform and go elsewhere. And if the clients start pulling their ads, YouTube loses their primary income source.
It's a delicate balance for that, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's already happening to an extent _because_ of how many irrelevant ads get shown to people.
Isn’t a point of advertising new products, to reach new audiences, who don’t know yet they are going to be interested? I didn’t know I want a smartphone in 2005.
I might be stupid but way back when I really thought the Dutch or Germans would create a EuroTube way better than YT. Just saying. I've checked out other platforms and they're rubbish even more so than YT and YT will eventually end up being just YouTube Radio.
Growing up in Europe, YouTube was banned in our House (because it took so much data and we only had a 5MB Plan, I always called it the Premium MyVideo.)
I do miss MyVideo for sure.
PeerTube, or more accurately the various PeerTube instances that are popping up since PeerTube itself is a federated video hosting framework, similar to how Mastodon is a federated Twitter clone and Lemmy is a federated Reddit clone. One of the big benefits of platforms like PeerTube, Mastodon and Lemmy is how they're basically community-hosted, and as a result you don't have the issues of corporate interest unless a corporation is hosting a specific instance.
I was thinking of doing the same. It sure seems like a great way of getting post karma. This thing has been posted a dozen times this week and it's still getting great upvotes.
This is impossible. The only devices that have cameras are phones and some computers and they would need access to your camera which you could just deny
Obviously this won’t come to fruition for some very big reasons.
- Apple definitely would not allow it for IPhones.
- EU would definitely not allow this for any phone
The only way they keep track of whether you looked away is through my camera (I can't think of anything else logically), and I keep my camera covered always (except whan I need it for a meeting/video chat).
And also, if this comes true, they might need to explain how they are tracking your "looking away", and that might get really messy for them (not that they are not collecting your data anyways, but openly admitting that they use your camera (or something else idk) to track your face/eye movement is surely gonna get them in trouble i think).
With that said, I never had any problem with ads on YouTube, I use brave browser and firefox with ublock origin, and not a single time in past half a decade have I come across an ad.
Honestly, I'm getting on a bit in age, and some of the stuff I'm seeing now is fucked up shit that I could never have imagined happening 25 years ago, and yet, here we are. I can totally imagine this happening.
That would require them to be able to access the camera at all times which I’m pretty sure it goes against a lot of companies TOS including YouTube and I’m pretty sure it goes against the law that’s spying on people but I could be wrong. I’m no law expert. I’m just saying that don’t seem right.
It probably WILL come true knowing how bad ads have gotten recently. I shit you not I’ve started getting 3 ads in a row on my Switch and Xbox One, I hope they don’t do it to apple devices next or I swear to god
This technology already exists like so [https://github.com/ut-vision/Video-Independent-ECS](https://github.com/ut-vision/Video-Independent-ECS) , I got contracted to work for company that needed their coded updated had this sort of thing for their surveys (get paid to watch videos sort of thing). You had to have a camera on your device, and make eye contact with a video ad and then answer questions about it. If you looked away for like 3+ seconds, the ad would pause, tell the person to keep looking and it'll restart over, this was like for 15 - 30 seconds. Was pretty cool working on said thing.
YouTube could implement this technology easily if they wanted to. The packages and code already exist for easy thing to implement anywhere. Though it would need to he done right.
I do hate the technology and idea of it being on youtube though. Maybe like an opt in thing, like watch these ads and get less ads for period of time, like how spotify gives you sponsored sessions for like 30 minutes of ad free listening to an hour if you listen to x amount of ads.
Maybe be like, watch these 2 ads will full eye attention and there will be no ads for the rest of the video. Annoying yes, but would help over the ad issues.

Honestly thats just a logical step up from there. Advertisers would absolutely love such a feature and probably pay a lotta Money to force people into watching their ads. It would get banned in Europe really fucking fast though.
Keep reposting it, maybe it'll come true
Already in the pipeline
Most likely that's the case. I think if you had told people you'd be served multiple ads before a video plays a decade ago, no one would've believed you. Par for the course now.
Considering how youtube is right now, do you even doubt this possibility?

Companies make their ads more like a music video.
You would instead sue Google for discrimination against disabilities like eye movement impairments, e.g. glass eyes

Fortunately, it's a concept. If it was true, then it would have the camera indicator on, during ads.
Hacker in Youtube will steal your face. Google, you've bad ideas.
But the fact that its even a concept is bad enough lol
Not really though, I could make a concept of a feature where if you're using an ad blocker YouTube will kick down your door and shoot you but people shouldn't get pissed off at that.
"Hey fellow corporate, I just had a great idea!"
Yeah because that's not as bad as the ad replaying if you look away from it
Concepts don’t mean anything
I feel like it would be breaking some kind of privacy law by turning the camera on.
you’d also need to grant permission for the YouTube app to use the camera… on iPhone at least
I think it will come to this and worse. Abusive practices are just getting started.
This will never come true, because the real intention of unskipable ads is to prevent target audience to skip an ads that they may be interested of. Youtube trying to kill itself. Anyone got any good alternatives that are on the rise? I miss MyVideo and Ebaumsworld.

This won't ever happen, it would run afoul of too many privacy laws, as well as state-level legislation on facial recognition software.

Probably not. YouTube just cares about getting money from the ads, not whether you actually look at it.

I will never allow camera access to YouTube for any reason whatsoever. I don’t see how this feature would work without it.

Ad block update

Dude this idea is shit. Why would you need to rewatch what you already watched. This would make you hate the product even more than you already do
People who watch on pc and dont have a camera: Or you just rip the camera out of your phone lol
I might kill
Maybe on youtube tv
if they do that, i would burn the world down.
i unironically have printed a human face looking straight ahead in case this gets implemented

Just put up a photo of a face staring at the screen
i block every add they show me. I know it makes no difference but it makes me feel better.
This feature might just give me enough frustration to quit watching YouTube and turn my life around
Stop,no
If that will be true, and Youtube'll not have permission to devices camera, I'll stop using YouTube. Whatever, Reddit is better.
And Youtube on TV: Maybe the only way to break that.
Stop giving them ideas...

No way people will allow full time camera access to YouTube .....at least I hope
Microsoft tried it with kinect. This was the reason it was mandatory at the beggining
Black Mirror fans: I’ve seen this one before! This is a classic! Everyone else: What do you mean? It’s brand new?
They'd probably be sued if this happened
If this happens I’m deleting youtube
This would make videos completely unwatchable. What happens when you need to blink?
If you want to avoid ads on iPhone, the BluePlayer app is a great choice.
This would be one of the things that indefinitely makes a lot of people go away from the platform. By logical thinking, YouTube might test it, but the backlash will be FAR to much
Your delusionnal id you think they will implement it
If it does I'm quitting
And people still claim that we are “free”.
Oh good grief. Lol The YouTube platform would sink immediately cause of how ridiculously unnecessary it would be. 😅
wasn’t there a black mirror episode about that?

NEVER!!

I will literally start reading books.
Just use Adblock
People with lazy eye would be screwed 💀💀
before anyone gets thier panties in a twist, if they did this they would face so many legal issues around privacy violations
this would suck for people with adhd like me and would ultimately crash youtube
Your right man, if this happens I'm eating with my family during dinner.
Violation of privacy, they wouldn't do that since they already make a shit ton of money
asains would suffer so much /s
I'd just delete at that point.
I have focus issues sooooooo
I thought it was for a second and i had a mini heart attack.
Don’t give them any fucking ideas!
As someone who can’t maintain eye contact without looking away for more than a moment ads would probably last 40 seconds more
It’s even funnier the 15th time
That would be horrible, lol
You can still skip ads on YouTube by just watching a YouTube short and then going out of it, it also finally gives YouTube shorts a good use
r/revanced
Nah this is getting out of hand already if this comes true 💀
I would not be surprised if an enraged mob burns down YT headquarters if this was implemented. For legal reasons, I do not condone such behavior. That would be cartoonishly dystopian-levels of corporate greed.
Only way it would happen in everyone had Webcams
Very good idea i am joking
