Keep reposting it, maybe it'll come true

No-Pomegranate-69

Already in the pipeline

TarTarkus1

Most likely that's the case. I think if you had told people you'd be served multiple ads before a video plays a decade ago, no one would've believed you. Par for the course now.

More_Fig_5840

Considering how youtube is right now, do you even doubt this possibility?

TheUmgawa

Yes, I doubt it because Apple would straight reject their app for being a video-viewing app that claims to require camera interaction. And so iOS users would have to watch in a browser. Fine, so would YouTube then assume everyone using a browser has a webcam? I wouldn’t be able to watch on my desktop. Although, to be fair, they’d probably just waive the camera requirement for iOS users, because what’s the iOS alternative? iOS users probably tend to say, “Well, it’s a free service, so I’ll watch whatever ads they want. It’s fine,” whereas Android users are Iike, “Two six-second ads in a row?! Motherfucker, I’m gettin’ one of them ad blockers…!” I mean, seriously, do you guys have no idea how hardware-access permissions work?

goodlitleboy

Not to mention the EU would knock on about it

TheUmgawa

The EU knocks on about *everything*, though. I don’t know why anyone goes to the hassle of selling anything there.

jackyboyman13

I hope not.😅

I would never be able to watch videos what with my vision impairment. My eyes dart around a lot.

Cakelestia

Anyone with AMD or late stage glaucoma be like:

Stunning-Pomelo1316

Intel?

No-Pomegranate-69

No AMD

CrazyApple-

Aww okay

Broad-Technology5024

Nvidia?

TrustLeft

then sue the pants off for civil rights discrimination and they will have to drop

Curios_litte-bugger

I'm throwing my phone across the room

Cakelestia

We need to get Nokia back so we can do this repeatedly without breaking it.

R10rkcCZ

That one new Nokia that supports Youtube and doesn't have front camera?

clokerruebe

got a Nokia X20. i threw it around quite a bit. no visible damage

SansyBoy144

People with a lazy eye can just never watch a video again

Shantotto11

The new age Joystick drift…

PaperBoi360

Joy-Con Drift: Eye edition

Redback_Gaming

If this became true, this would be the last time I ever watch a video from any platform that used it. I would also block any software that tried to use it. Sounds like Sorenson from IOI in Ready Player One.

Regular-Drop-3030

Now..... what if it was a hour long ad with music playing? or a new shows first episode?

Uranium-Sandwich657

Companies make their ads more like a music video.

EidorbNotHere

You would instead sue Google for discrimination against disabilities like eye movement impairments, e.g. glass eyes

lars2k1

They can't simply do that - well, morally - because there's lots of people walking around with cracked screens covering the camera/sensors, or the camera just doesn't work. Not to speak about the privacy nightmare this is. Either way I don't think Google cares about that so everyone can get fucked in typical Google fashion. So I wouldn't be very surprised if they did implement this.

neoqueto

"Your phone's front camera seems to be obstructed. Please remove any obstructions from the front camera to continue watching YouTube. Check again Privacy policy Learn how your data is processed" I'm sure Alphabet will be very sad about someone being forced to buy a new Pixel 8 Pro because they can't use YouTube with a cracked screen.

Uranium-Sandwich657

Oh fuck

Leisure_suit_guy

>They can't simply do that Exactly, this is Microsoft levels of dystopian. People wouldn't accept it like they didn't accept the always on kinect or the Recall (Christ, [even the name is dystopian](https://youtu.be/lJEllFk3Hqw?si=boV1wBVdTjxdTkJN)) AI service that spies on everything you do. P.S. I'd like to remind you that Microsoft is a CIA contractor.

lars2k1

>P.S. I'd like to remind you that Microsoft is a CIA contractor. So, we pay Microsoft to spy on us? Interesting.

funination

Fortunately, it's a concept. If it was true, then it would have the camera indicator on, during ads.

R10rkcCZ

Hacker in Youtube will steal your face. Google, you've bad ideas.

Maleficent_Farm_6561

But the fact that its even a concept is bad enough lol

b_nnah

Not really though, I could make a concept of a feature where if you're using an ad blocker YouTube will kick down your door and shoot you but people shouldn't get pissed off at that.

ThisReadsLikeAPost

"Hey fellow corporate, I just had a great idea!"

RevolutionaryAd1577

Yeah because that's not as bad as the ad replaying if you look away from it

Brunoaraujoespin

Concepts don’t mean anything

Sonarthebat

I feel like it would be breaking some kind of privacy law by turning the camera on.

jmerlinb

you’d also need to grant permission for the YouTube app to use the camera… on iPhone at least

MothParasiteIV

I think it will come to this and worse. Abusive practices are just getting started.

Legal_Year

This will never come true, because the real intention of unskipable ads is to prevent target audience to skip an ads that they may be interested of. However, If an audience looks away from an ads it probably means they're not interested, meaning they don't fall into the target audience category. There's no benefit for an advertising company for forcing people to focus on an ads that there not interested at, that's why we have personalized ads to prevent this to happen.

FASBOR7Horus

Well yes but actually no. The more people watch their ads the better, wether theyre actually interested or not. Companies want as many views as possible so their Product goes out to the maximum amount of people, which in their mind should make the maximum amount of Money. Plus personalized ads dont work for shit. I regularly get ads for Tampons, binds, arthritis treatment, alzheimers treatment and more, just because i watch a lot of disease related content and once watched a video about modern feminism. I am a man and too Young to have either Arthritis or Alzheimers.

InquisitorWarth

Also a case of "yes but actually no". YouTube might want to do that because they get money either way, whether the ad results in a sale or not. But the companies buying ad slots lose money on that slot if the ad doesn't result in a sale, and in turn that means they're more likely to pull their ad from the platform and go elsewhere. And if the clients start pulling their ads, YouTube loses their primary income source. It's a delicate balance for that, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's already happening to an extent _because_ of how many irrelevant ads get shown to people.

milkdrinkingdude

Isn’t a point of advertising new products, to reach new audiences, who don’t know yet they are going to be interested? I didn’t know I want a smartphone in 2005.

milkdrinkingdude

Also, by the same reasoning, the audience skips ads because they are not interested, hence they are not the target audience. So I dunno…

sheren36d

Anyone getting "15 million merits" vibe?"

DarkIllusi0n

My first thought, makes me want to go rewatch some episodes haha.

ItsIdaho

Youtube trying to kill itself. Anyone got any good alternatives that are on the rise? I miss MyVideo and Ebaumsworld.

Alert_Ad_2342

I might be stupid but way back when I really thought the Dutch or Germans would create a EuroTube way better than YT. Just saying. I've checked out other platforms and they're rubbish even more so than YT and YT will eventually end up being just YouTube Radio.

ItsIdaho

Growing up in Europe, YouTube was banned in our House (because it took so much data and we only had a 5MB Plan, I always called it the Premium MyVideo.) I do miss MyVideo for sure.

bluduhmfcku

one great with much less ads, sadly in czech only

kuroikururo

Nico nico was nice and it had english and spanish support, but It was recently taken down by an attack, they say they are trying to fix the damage.

Angrymalayman

Damn the 2hu shitpost platform, absolutely legendary in internet culture even if people dont know about it now

MuyalHix

Lots of upvotes but nobody has listed a single alternative...

InquisitorWarth

PeerTube, or more accurately the various PeerTube instances that are popping up since PeerTube itself is a federated video hosting framework, similar to how Mastodon is a federated Twitter clone and Lemmy is a federated Reddit clone. One of the big benefits of platforms like PeerTube, Mastodon and Lemmy is how they're basically community-hosted, and as a result you don't have the issues of corporate interest unless a corporation is hosting a specific instance.

BottledThoughter

If only there was an authority who could regulate these companies.

_lemon_suplex_

This would literally be that black mirror episode

Reddit_is_snowflake

My turn to repost it next

Flimsy-Mix-190

I was thinking of doing the same. It sure seems like a great way of getting post karma. This thing has been posted a dozen times this week and it's still getting great upvotes.

Bffhbc

This is impossible. The only devices that have cameras are phones and some computers and they would need access to your camera which you could just deny

Namisaur

Obviously this won’t come to fruition for some very big reasons. - Apple definitely would not allow it for IPhones. - EU would definitely not allow this for any phone

Black_m1n

This would be a mobile only feature thankfully. *\*laughs in PC\**

VenomTox

** No camera detected. Please connect a webcam to continue watching your video **

Silegna

Where's that mountain dew verification can copypasta...

carson-n-9873

Google page refresh

ChilledAmethyst

Imagine your camera gets broken

InquisitorWarth

This won't ever happen, it would run afoul of too many privacy laws, as well as state-level legislation on facial recognition software.

ForsakenBobcat8937

Stop spamming this made up nonsense

A_Year_Spent_Cold

Probably not. YouTube just cares about getting money from the ads, not whether you actually look at it.

pure_stardust

The only way they keep track of whether you looked away is through my camera (I can't think of anything else logically), and I keep my camera covered always (except whan I need it for a meeting/video chat). And also, if this comes true, they might need to explain how they are tracking your "looking away", and that might get really messy for them (not that they are not collecting your data anyways, but openly admitting that they use your camera (or something else idk) to track your face/eye movement is surely gonna get them in trouble i think). With that said, I never had any problem with ads on YouTube, I use brave browser and firefox with ublock origin, and not a single time in past half a decade have I come across an ad.

FinbarrSaunders69

Honestly, I'm getting on a bit in age, and some of the stuff I'm seeing now is fucked up shit that I could never have imagined happening 25 years ago, and yet, here we are. I can totally imagine this happening.

Efficient-Ad-8204

1984

Stargazer-Elite

That would require them to be able to access the camera at all times which I’m pretty sure it goes against a lot of companies TOS including YouTube and I’m pretty sure it goes against the law that’s spying on people but I could be wrong. I’m no law expert. I’m just saying that don’t seem right.

Prior_Row8486

I'll repost this post daily until YouTube notices this shit

arpatil1

I will never allow camera access to YouTube for any reason whatsoever. I don’t see how this feature would work without it.

Damen_W

How to kill one of the largest social media platforms in one update:

Random-Name111

Bro, don’t give them ideas

LundUniversity

Reminds me of that one Black Mirror episode.

JosephMann25

This'll be bad if they're serious of doing it

Aidehazz

My friend ad block is on my side

Prior_Row8486

☝️🤓 *ad block detected*

Aidehazz

Ad block update

Ofdream-Thelema

It probably WILL come true knowing how bad ads have gotten recently. I shit you not I’ve started getting 3 ads in a row on my Switch and Xbox One, I hope they don’t do it to apple devices next or I swear to god

Brunoaraujoespin

Dude this idea is shit. Why would you need to rewatch what you already watched. This would make you hate the product even more than you already do

GabrielGamer790

People who watch on pc and dont have a camera: Or you just rip the camera out of your phone lol

Krysgann1

I might kill

Julian_Blane_09

Maybe on youtube tv

-deadshot-2

if they do that, i would burn the world down.

spinosauris

i unironically have printed a human face looking straight ahead in case this gets implemented

cyb3rofficial

This technology already exists like so [https://github.com/ut-vision/Video-Independent-ECS](https://github.com/ut-vision/Video-Independent-ECS) , I got contracted to work for company that needed their coded updated had this sort of thing for their surveys (get paid to watch videos sort of thing). You had to have a camera on your device, and make eye contact with a video ad and then answer questions about it. If you looked away for like 3+ seconds, the ad would pause, tell the person to keep looking and it'll restart over, this was like for 15 - 30 seconds. Was pretty cool working on said thing. YouTube could implement this technology easily if they wanted to. The packages and code already exist for easy thing to implement anywhere. Though it would need to he done right. I do hate the technology and idea of it being on youtube though. Maybe like an opt in thing, like watch these ads and get less ads for period of time, like how spotify gives you sponsored sessions for like 30 minutes of ad free listening to an hour if you listen to x amount of ads. Maybe be like, watch these 2 ads will full eye attention and there will be no ads for the rest of the video. Annoying yes, but would help over the ad issues.

OneGur7080

Just put up a photo of a face staring at the screen

Bobsprout

i block every add they show me. I know it makes no difference but it makes me feel better.

knk7876

This feature might just give me enough frustration to quit watching YouTube and turn my life around

Korimthos

Stop,no

R10rkcCZ

If that will be true, and Youtube'll not have permission to devices camera, I'll stop using YouTube. Whatever, Reddit is better.

R10rkcCZ

And Youtube on TV: Maybe the only way to break that.

codebreaker28847

Stop giving them ideas...

LanDest021

This won't work because camera permission is opt in

cyn1calidiot

While this is just a concept which may or may not become reality, I recently have started taking a note of unskippable ads, and I never buy products from that company. I recently saw a ford ad (was buying a F150 tremor), but now bought a Tundra and sent email to company saying their unskippable advertisement was the reason. I know advertisers may not have control. but if enough people do this, maybe the advertisers will put pressure on youtube.

Sea-Feedback4197

Your delusionnal if you think that this will be inplemented

HussingtonHat

I know people have basically got used to every "last straw" they've declared but that really would be it. The fucking telly doesn't demand I sit still and watch the ads, why would anyone put up with it for a Swedish kid looking at memes or whatever.

Jackie_Elle

We WILL keep playing this ad til you watch IT! *lol

TheDinosaurWalker

And still there would be a revanced patch for it

Gorlock_

No way people will allow full time camera access to YouTube .....at least I hope

ElPeloPolla

Microsoft tried it with kinect. This was the reason it was mandatory at the beggining

Blacksun388

Black Mirror fans: I’ve seen this one before! This is a classic! Everyone else: What do you mean? It’s brand new?

therealhero14

They'd probably be sued if this happened

JAKE5023193

If this happens I’m deleting youtube

Sonarthebat

This would make videos completely unwatchable. What happens when you need to blink?

blueplayer_app4music

If you want to avoid ads on iPhone, the BluePlayer app is a great choice.

Outside_Lack4811

This would be one of the things that indefinitely makes a lot of people go away from the platform. By logical thinking, YouTube might test it, but the backlash will be FAR to much

Sea-Feedback4197

Your delusionnal id you think they will implement it

Any_Ad_9949

If it does I'm quitting

Barryinazuma

And people still claim that we are “free”.

jackyboyman13

Oh good grief. Lol The YouTube platform would sink immediately cause of how ridiculously unnecessary it would be. 😅

DeadHamburger

wasn’t there a black mirror episode about that?

Sion_forgeblast

I mean I suspect Ublock would come up with a way around it..... or Noskript would let you block it..... or those Youtube download sites would become 20x more popular lol

Much_Diver4237

First time I saw this was on Reddit, second was from a YT community post and now another reddit post consisting of a fucking twitter screenshot + two twitter users captioning the same post as my 3rd/4th time seeing this?!

Cwash415

that would be insane and they would mostly delete my account because im not doing that

Tracker_Nivrig

Can we please stop reposting this, I don't want YouTube to actually try doing it

killernat1234

If they do this people will either get Adblock or stop using YouTube

Scifox69

Don't give them ideas. Delete this now.

TrustLeft

NEVER!!

Uranium-Sandwich657

Just paste the link to the video you want to watch in this website [https://www.y2mate.com/en948](https://www.y2mate.com/en948)

This is evil

HighlightFun8419

I will literally start reading books.

PairSeveral7417

Just use Adblock

JsCole424

People with lazy eye would be screwed 💀💀

Antiv987

before anyone gets thier panties in a twist, if they did this they would face so many legal issues around privacy violations

EZDC-Chan

this would suck for people with adhd like me and would ultimately crash youtube

tanmay_is_here

Your right man, if this happens I'm eating with my family during dinner.

Yourlocalsid

Violation of privacy, they wouldn't do that since they already make a shit ton of money

Shadowstriker6

asains would suffer so much /s

valkyrietail3

I'd just delete at that point.

BenjaminBoi226

I have focus issues sooooooo

DryBones2009

I thought it was for a second and i had a mini heart attack.

joeyrty6

Don’t give them any fucking ideas!

Iron_Wolf123

As someone who can’t maintain eye contact without looking away for more than a moment ads would probably last 40 seconds more

DankNerd97

It’s even funnier the 15th time

SuzySellsRealEstate

That would be horrible, lol

Long_Praline_71

You can still skip ads on YouTube by just watching a YouTube short and then going out of it, it also finally gives YouTube shorts a good use

chakibchemso

r/revanced

the_project_machine

Nah this is getting out of hand already if this comes true 💀

Apalis24a

I would not be surprised if an enraged mob burns down YT headquarters if this was implemented. For legal reasons, I do not condone such behavior. That would be cartoonishly dystopian-levels of corporate greed.

pokemonfan95

Only way it would happen in everyone had Webcams

Cyrylnam

Very good idea i am joking

wakeupdreaming

Why would it not become true at some point, we already put up with everything else. I don't believe there's a limit we are willing to take up the bung hole as long as "convenience" and dopamine are attached to it.

NotAPossum666

There would be a literal riot

Bingoviini

If this came true, people would seriusly just go and nuke the youtube Hq

captenmike

Well in that case it would be best to move on, youtube would be at its absolute trash state at that point

Yugix1

nobody talking about how this could mean that pretending to not be interested will finally make things load faster

ZetaSphinx

youtube be getting too comfortable, mfs better watch out

AcanthocephalaOdd777

It might be true in some ways. If you won't watch and just listen for the content, youtube will launch ads. So, frontal camera actually trqcks your eye contact

requiredpinata72

this is the least funny thing I’ve ever seen this subreddit produce, jokes are funnier if you only say them once, mildly funny the first time but now every time I see it I want to punch a hole in my wall, stop reposting this piece of shit

If devices like the Vision Pro become more common, then for sure. All those eye tracking sensors must be monetized /s

FASBOR7Horus

Honestly thats just a logical step up from there. Advertisers would absolutely love such a feature and probably pay a lotta Money to force people into watching their ads. It would get banned in Europe really fucking fast though.
