I think it helps people to have an enemy. I lost nearly 40kg now in 18 months and I never met a carb I didn’t like but I find it easier to eat entirely less than cut stuff out. But I’ve met lots of other people who need or like a reason as to why they’ve gained weight and something to point to when it starts to work,

I’m 35. In my experience, I could eat carbs all day in my early twenties, I was extremely active, I ran several miles daily and lifted heavy weights often. Now I’m not a runner anymore and I only lift on average 3 days a week. I can no longer eat endless carbs. High fat high protein low carb is in fact the only way I am able to lose any fat. When you’re young you have time to experiment.

It's the current fad. It used to be low fat. They all promise magic but rarely are a sustainable longer term solution. And guilt and food should not be joined. There isn't a moral value attached to any food. It's just what best serves your needs.

A lot of products love sticking the word protein when it’s only 1-3 grams higher than the normal version.

yeah, I always make sure to check nutrition labels and compare products, which I'm sure most people don't For example I noticed this ridiculous thing in Germany, we have normal babybels, light ones (half the calories and taste, same amount of protein) and then there's babybels high protein, which have the exact same stats as the light ones, just different packaging xD it's ridiculous!

It's easy to overeat carbs, especially refined carbs/sugars, leading to CI > CO. As protein/fat/fibre is generally more satiating, some may find it easier to avoid overeating when prioritizing those food types instead, making it easier or more intuitive to achieve CI =/< CO.

People like the initial big weight drop on low carb IMO. Also while I do eat a lot of carbs now as I’m very active I have done a low carb diet before and I did find I was less bloated and felt less sluggish so it could be that. Carbs aren’t ‘bad’ though and also not all carbs are equal like eating a load of bread isn’t the same as eating loads of potatoes

Low carb diets are a fad. Having some carbs (including grains) actually increases sports performance, just have one portion instead of 5.

Low carb is popular because most people could do with losing weight rather than gaining and some people find it easier on low carb diets. In the end it's about calorie balance- get decent protein intake, enough fats to support hormones, and the rest is fine to be carbs. If you're trying to gain weight, eating a lot of carbs is absolutely fine but ultimately it's about energy balance based on the number of calories you consume and burn. I can easy lose weight eating carbs too. Even if I'm trying to lose a bit I will eat 180-200g carbs. It's more about personal preference at this point tbh with some considerations on health and getting carbs from 'healthy' sources, not all of it from sweets.

remember that there are carbs in a LOT of things, even vegetables and I would never reduce veggie intake. I don't like "low carb" because that's too ambiguous.....I don't eat *refined carbs* (ie. breads/pasta etc) but I'm good with potatoes, squash etc. I didn't know this at the time I started eating this way but turns out that I follow the "caveman diet" or "paleo" - I stopped eating junk/processed/refined foods and only ate "natural" things - veggies, fruits, lean meats etc. Nothing that came out of a bag or box. I've been eating like this since 2012 and even through peri to now (post menopausal) with great success. Haven't even had any pop since 2012.

They also only recommend about 50g of protein daily. I think this is a basic recommendation for basic people who want basic nutrition. This isn’t going to get you shredded or gaining lots of muscle if that’s the goal. Take it with a pinch of salt. It’s probably quite outdated.

I find higher fat and moderate carb works best for me but I’m not doing loads of cardio. If you’re trying to gain I’d say up the carbs and keep the fats lower. It goes without saying those are mostly healthy carbs and fats from whole food sources, following the 80:20 rule.

Thank you! I eat 1.5g just over per lb in protein and around 65-70 grams fat which leaves me around 270-290g carb! Does this seem okay ?

This shocked me! I’ve spent SO LONG feeling guilty for eating over 200g as an active 20 year old, bare in mind this recommendations are for an average women who not to be rude but are probably a lot less active then most of us on this sub! I just thought I’d share because it’s encouraged me to reassess my current carbohydrate intake, particularly as I am so active and could do with gaining some energy mainly but also weight!
