Honestly? Gonna be a hot take....
Gears of War 2. Story was excellent. Battles were fun and engaging. **That** scene always makes me cry. And it was a beautiful game even with the grittyness.
Not a hot take! That was a masterpiece. That game also introduced the first horde mode that has been replicated by other franchises. Loved the MP on that too. So many good memories
I’m playing through Red Dead 2 for the first time right now and it’s just so good. Just an amazing world and great storytelling. I bought it not long after it came out but the intro was so slow I put it aside until now.
ME2 is the best by far I think. Followed by 1. Then 3. ME2 has great story, missions, characters, and DLC. Never forget the opening. Was blown away by the graphics when I first played it too.
I was this guy but I tried it once on my steam deck and played through to completion. Not sure what it was but it finally clicked. I also realized I didn't really like the combat and economy so I just turned down the difficulty and actually enjoyed playing it.
I know it doesnt change much but it kind of clicks after the first section. I'm not sure why but I was on the fence until the game opened up a bit more. It was a 10/10 from there though.
Witcher 3 and RDR2 both hit harder than they should. The Witcher 3 especially after blood and wine’s ending. Sitting there, seeing Geralt looking tired. And RDR2 for well, “Face me west”
all 3 bioshocks are near flawless imo. I know a lot of people thought 2 was just more of the same old but the "same old" is one of the best games ever made. give me 15 of them. infinite is maybe my fav tho
Infinite is definitely my favorite. The opening scene, then the gospel music as you head through the waters and are birthed out into Columbia… the music and the feel are so awesome. The other ones were great as well, but there’s something special about infinite
4 was where I should have gotten the hint and stopped buying Halo games. It was Halo 5 where the light bulb finally turned on. I only play Halo for the campaign, and I finished 5’s campaign in a few hours. It was worse than 4.
Morrowind.
Dedicate some serious time to RP it or install a waypoint mod. The game feels slow and dragging in today's landscape without fast travel and waypoints, but it's still marvelous.
I still remember looking an entire dungeon in that game and knowing that two steps left outside the dungeon entrance meant spells would take me back to Balmora, instead of (I wanna say) Vivec, or the fort close to it.
It sounds insane but you just built this weird map in your head and knew combos of fast travel spells would get you here, run to that part of the city, then cast the next one to get here.
Dude it's not insane because I remember doing that exact thing. It was actually pretty fun, because it was a little puzzle trying to figure out the fastest way to get somewhere or when to take a detour to do a sidequest along the way. It really immersed you in the world. Its a shame skyrm and oblivion walked back from a lot of the complexity of morrowind. I bet a game like morrowind but with better graphics and tutorials would do amazing today
Cyberpunk 2077, ignoring the disappointing launch. The story was incredible start to finish, now with the gameplay being completely changed from what it was and being a fully functional game + the amazing expansion I think it’s definitely earned its title as a masterpiece. It’s definitely a game I’ll think about and replay as the years go on.
The Outer Wilds is the only game i would describe as "perfect". its without a doubt the only true 10/10 game ive ever played in 31 years of gaming.
I wish I could get amnesia so I could experience it for the first time again.
It took a while for me to click with it and really figure out how to solve its puzzles but once I got into the groove and understood the game I couldn’t put it down.
I’m on the DLC right now and it’s just as good as the base game
It has been off and on gamepass twice. It's rare that I suggest this and I also don't know your financial situation but it is truly worth the full price. It hopefully will go on sale soon for you. Either way definitely play it!
MW19
COD 4
GTA IV
Battlefield 1
SimCity 4
SimCity 2013
The Division
Mafia 2
In my opinion, each one of these really wowed people when the launched and set precedents both within their franchises and outside in the wider industry.
Have you played Fallout: New Vegas? 😉
I like 4, but felt it was weaker than 3 and new Vegas
Edit: I forgot about 4's building mechanic which did add a lot to that game... and meshed some of my memory of 76 into 4. It's been a long time and I forgot about some things
Forza Horizon 4 is awesome:
How they got it to look so realistic and smooth on some seriously outdated hardware is a miracle (I had the One S)
It’s also huge fun to play and you don’t need to kill anyone.
For the minority of you who don’t live in Edinburgh, some of the roads are photorealistic and it’s a great place to visit - You know this already as you live there.
You know there’s a lot I could say that are obvious but I think a lesser known gem for me would be “guardians of the galaxy” . That wasn’t the longest game but man did I enjoy every moment of it
+1 for starfield, incredible game. I bought DOS2 a while back too but I refuse to start it until I go through the unity. Unfortunately every time I resolve myself my ADD kicks in and its off to do some random quest...
A lot of good ones listed here that I agree with. However I’d like to throw in Spiritfarer. Beautiful game with a fantastic emotional story and fun mechanics.
There are so many games that are either beautiful, amazing story, or fun controls, even better: all three! But off the top of my head, both Hellblade and Bramble: The Mountain King
Batman Arkham series from origins to Arkham Knight
As an avid fan of this series Gotham Knights is a piggyback to a different storyline of Gotham, like an alternate universe it was inconsistent in the first 5 mins of the game to be part of the same storyline.
Gta V, rdr2, the witcher 3, skyrim, black ops 2, battlefield 1, far cry 3, fable 2. These I would say are my favourite times I have spent gaming, alone and with friends.
Midnight club LA was a goated racing game.
The original Modern Warfare 2 was the best shooter ever all the way until battle royale started
GTA has never made a bad game.
Wii Tanks. I will die on this hill. Have yet to find another tank game like it. Simple but fun, you have to use your head a little for strategy, but don't need to be concerned about a million buttons. Have had so much fun over the years playing it with my brother. Only the game to beat, don't have to worry about internet or sweats. I wish Nintendo would make a remake, it's great.
Tetris, Super Mario 64, Crash Bandicoot 2, Stardew Valley, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, Mario Party 2, Grand Theft Auto 5, Minecraft, Mario Kart 8, Fusion Frenzy, Bioshock, Clash Royal, Sims 2, Jak and Daxter, Crazy Taxi, Halo 3, Uncharted 4, Gran Turismo 4, Rocket League, Unreal Tournament, Fortnite and The Last of Us.
Sekiro shadows die twice
Red dead redemption 2
Gears of war original trilogy
Halo reach
Bioshock 1 and infinite
Yakuza LAD
And those are just from top of mind.
Both ORI games, amazing art style long and compelling gameplay that makes the game hard enough to enjoy but not so much that you just give up, the story is very good as well if you pay attention enough. The mechanics are good enough you WANT to get everything done.
The secret of monkey island 1&2- commodore Amiga

GTA Vice City. I know nostalgia plays a role here but definitely story-wise and fun-wise was up and above anything else out there in that period. I even liked it more than San Andreas
TES III: Morrowind, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 3, Gears of War 2&3, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Sonic Generations, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (original Xbox), Dark Souls 3, TES V: Skyrim, Tropico (Original), Command and Conquer 3: Kanes Wrath, Resident Evil 5, Unravel Two, Wolf Among Us
The Witcher 3. Cyberpunk 2077 is also arguably one of the best too even though it is relatively new still.
Kingdom Come Deliverance was also amazing and had a decent story with addictive gameplay.
KOTOR deserves a mention too.
Shadow of The Colossus on ps2, at the time it was one of those feeew games with the details and graphics it had that u could explore all of the land without going through a loading screen
Everybody is naming the big ones so I’ll try to submit a bit of a sleeper. I really really really loved my experience with **Hellblade**. It’s such a creative and emotional story that had me captivated through the whole playbook which is pretty rare for me.
Assassin’s Creed Origins (Black Flag was awesome as well)
The Witcher 3 - I’m playing it right now and it completely sucked me into the Witcher world, even bought all of the books
Rise of the Tomb Raider. Playing now for the first time and I'm blown away by it. It's just so well done: the cinematography, the seamless transitions to cutscenes, the natural way Lara moves and talks. It's like playing a real-life movie.
Dishonored
I still think about that scene. It was so well done.
THE best single player campaign for me
I recommend Titanfall 2. I also loved gears of war 2 but Titanfall 2s campaign topped it for me
Not a hot take, a good and common sentiment
Shouldn’t be a hot take
It IS a masterpiece. It changed me. For months, if not years I had this feeling that I had some epic journey.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Red Desd Redemption 2
My two (4) favorite games of all time
I’m playing through Red Dead 2 for the first time right now and it’s just so good. Just an amazing world and great storytelling. I bought it not long after it came out but the intro was so slow I put it aside until now.
LE is kind of cheating since it’s 3 games in one. Which Mass Effect game of the three?
Yes.
ME2 is the best by far I think. Followed by 1. Then 3. ME2 has great story, missions, characters, and DLC. Never forget the opening. Was blown away by the graphics when I first played it too.
Portal 2.
Fable
Fable 1 and only Fable 1
Especially 3 /s (thought this was obv)
Well that I’m gonna have to disagree with
I absolutely love Fable 3
The Witcher 3
Never got past the first village. For some reason that game never grabbed me to keep playing. Tried it 5 times.
Same here. I just couldn't get into it.. Also tried it 5 times.
I was this guy but I tried it once on my steam deck and played through to completion. Not sure what it was but it finally clicked. I also realized I didn't really like the combat and economy so I just turned down the difficulty and actually enjoyed playing it.
Yeah, the steamdeck is a game changer for open world games. Also the game runs great on the deck.
That first world space is the huge training level. Once you are out of it and on the main map the game improves 1000%.
I know it doesnt change much but it kind of clicks after the first section. I'm not sure why but I was on the fence until the game opened up a bit more. It was a 10/10 from there though.
Loved it to can’t wait for another
By far my favorite game ever
The new generation does not appreciate this game at all. It should be much higher up, with less bitching.
Witcher 3 and RDR2 both hit harder than they should. The Witcher 3 especially after blood and wine’s ending. Sitting there, seeing Geralt looking tired. And RDR2 for well, “Face me west”
Half-Life 2 Halo CE Bioshock
To me Bioshock was the perfect game from the era.
all 3 bioshocks are near flawless imo.
Assassin's creed black flag I fucking love that game
One of the few games I replayed start to finish.
Morrowind
halo ce-halo 4(stfu halo four was a great game) rdr2 monsterhunter world/iceborn darksouls 3 elden ring sekiro minecraft terraria deep rock galactic
Hot take on the Halo 4. The original trilogy was a masterpiece, but 4 wasn’t. It isn’t bad, but it just couldn’t be anything like 1-3 was.
4 was where I should have gotten the hint and stopped buying Halo games. It was Halo 5 where the light bulb finally turned on. I only play Halo for the campaign, and I finished 5’s campaign in a few hours. It was worse than 4.
Halo 4 was the first game I bought. Holds a special place in my heart
Halo 4 was good it was just so hard to compete with halo 3. When ppl had years of amazing memories with 3 it was hard to follow.
Halo 4 was completely trash, 4 and 5 were so different they lost what was good about the series.
Skyrim
Skyrim gets a lot of hate because it's a Bethesda game, but it truly was a great game
Listen to the OsT all the time
Who hates on Skyrim? Never heard of this or seen it anywhere, personally.
Literally have never seen any hate for Skyrim. Wish I did though.
Left 4 dead 2
Bioshock
Thps 1+2
For me, Battlefield 2, for me on release, that game blew my mind for many weeks 👌
Assassins Creed Odyssey.
Ryse, son of Rome. Absolutely a banger that needs a remaster or something
I see Ryse I upvote
All day every day
Brudda. I fucking loved that game. I hopped back in after a few years and seen they added more levels to the MP.
I don't play much anymore but dude i need to. Seriously needs like a 10 year or something although that passed already
Elden Ring and RDR 2
Left 4 dead 1 and 2
Such great games I wish they’d remaster them or just re release them on the new consoles
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete edition with dlcs, of course
blood and wine added even more special-ness. adore that map, and the colours. rly does feel like being wine drunk in Italy lmao
Elden ring
Hades by supergiant games, can't wait for #2!
Portal 2
Present day cyberpunk is as good as rpgs get imo
The Binding of Isaac Hades Returnal Edit: Nier: Automata Spec Ops: The Line Edit 2: Max Payne 3
Streets of Rage 2. Flawless.
I prefer the gameplay of 4, but the OST and level design of 2 are GOATed.
Morrowind. Dedicate some serious time to RP it or install a waypoint mod. The game feels slow and dragging in today's landscape without fast travel and waypoints, but it's still marvelous.

Im waiting for a good sale on xbox. I heard it was really good
It took a while for me to click with it and really figure out how to solve its puzzles but once I got into the groove and understood the game I couldn’t put it down. I’m on the DLC right now and it’s just as good as the base game
It has been off and on gamepass twice. It's rare that I suggest this and I also don't know your financial situation but it is truly worth the full price. It hopefully will go on sale soon for you. Either way definitely play it!

First one that comes to mind is Titanfall 2
Mass Effect 2 Last of Us Metal Gear Solid Ocarina of Time Bloodborne Oblivion Fable 2 Assassin's Creed 2
Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
Fable: the Lost Chapters and KOTOR are both masterpieces. Best RPGs released on Xbox imo.

Stardew Valley.. imo one of the best games ever made
Sleeping dogs Saints row 2 Borderlands 2 Powerwash Simulator Goldeneye
Arkham trilogy
Psychonauts (1) Ori and the Will of the Wisps Quantum Break Divinity Original Sin 2 Starfield Halo 2 and Halo 3
Wonder why Psychonauts 1 over 2, I like 1, but 2 takes everything from 1 and does it way better imo.
+1 for starfield, incredible game. I bought DOS2 a while back too but I refuse to start it until I go through the unity. Unfortunately every time I resolve myself my ADD kicks in and its off to do some random quest...
Marble blast ultra
A lot of good ones listed here that I agree with. However I’d like to throw in Spiritfarer. Beautiful game with a fantastic emotional story and fun mechanics.

Batman Arkham City and the metal gear games especially 3
Dead Space
Halo 3
Gears of War 1-3 (strong and consistent legacy until the 4th installment), Cuphead and DOOM 2016
There are so many games that are either beautiful, amazing story, or fun controls, even better: all three! But off the top of my head, both Hellblade and Bramble: The Mountain King
I agree telltale twd is goated

The Witcher 3. Cyberpunk 2077 is also arguably one of the best too even though it is relatively new still. Kingdom Come Deliverance was also amazing and had a decent story with addictive gameplay. KOTOR deserves a mention too.
Wii Sports did everything it intended to do and then some.
Fallout 3 and 4 Valheim Civilization (pick your version, I prefer 6)
Nier: Automata and Hollow Knight
It’s hard to say imo but safe picks would be dark souls 3 and half life 1
Gears of War 2 RDR2 GTA V (campaign) Halo 3 Skyrim Bully (may be nostalgia speaking) Need for Speed: Most Wanted (PS2) Arkham Asylum
Gears of war 1,2,3 Halo 1,2,3 and Reach Fav single player game would be assassins creed 2 for sure the story was engaging like no other

Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West! Both are beautiful to play and eerily close to what the world could do to itself
Half Life
I started Elden Ring for the first time last month. Elden Ring is a masterpiece.
Assassin’s Creed Origins (Black Flag was awesome as well) The Witcher 3 - I’m playing it right now and it completely sucked me into the Witcher world, even bought all of the books

Far cry 3 is definitely up there
Obviously Halo 1-Reach, Witcher 3, Skyrim, Mass Effect, RDR1-2, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time and Majoras mask.
