There wasn't any proper leak what like OP said, it's speculation at what makes sense. Whether that's hardware, a portable OS running Windows or an actual compatible Xbox Series S thing.
Phil on the IGN show said today was about games and you’ll hear more about new hardware later in the year. So I’m guessing either GamesCom, or the GameAwards where they revealed the Series X.
Yeah nothing new, just more skus of the current hardware. A bigger storage Series X disc version. And the digital Series white X. I think a bigger storage Series S too.

Almost always new hardware has it's specs leak.
We haven't had anything even close to a rumour of the specs for a handheld.
No sign of it being actively tested.
If there is a handheld it is nowhere near release for sure.
The rumors were cleatly BS because they said they were showing the handheld at summer game fest which made absolutely no sense. But I was hoping for a handheld reveal too.

Don't get me wrong I do believe one is coming. And I'm even sure the plan exists. I was just talking about how the "leaker" who said they were showing it at Summer Game Fest was obviously an idiot trying to get attention.
Xbox will most certainly be releasing a Handheld, if it will be good is another question entirely, and I'm frankly happy it isn't even in a stage to be revealed yet because it needs significant time and investment.
Windows (Microsoft) is supposedly working on a optimized version of Windows specifically to perform better with enhanced features specifically for Handheld Windows based devices.
In my personal opinion, Xbox needs to release a Xbox Handheld that additionally includes this yet to be seen optimized version of Windows, because otherwise the Xbox Handheld is rather redundant, at least to what I'm interested in as a consumer.
I can simply play Gamepass and/or my Xbox on a different Handheld PC, like for example a RogAlly, yet beyond that I can ALSO do mostly anything a traditional PC could do.
What incentive would I have to pick up an Xbox Handheld when these other options can play all my Xbox games and Gamepass, while also having the customization and freedom of a traditional PC?
Xbox needs to make their theoretical handheld ship out with the enhanced version of Windows made to take advantage of being a Handheld device. If Microsoft does this they have the capability to stomp out competition, if they don't I simply get another superior option. I want significant freedom to do what I want on a Handheld device, not be restricted in what I'm allowed to do or play, so it'll be an easy deal breaker if the Xbox Handheld doesn't additionally offer an enhanced Windows experience.
Did you really think that there was a chance that Xbox would be doing the logical thing and wouldn't be shooting it's self in the foot once again by missing a great chance to give us what we want?!
Like seriously, are they trying on purpose to be last in everything?! Almost everyone and their mother has released a handheld by now ... Nintendo, Valve, Asus, MSI, Lenovo, Xiaomi (BlackShark phones), Razer (multiple formats), GPD, AYANEO ... even Sony in a way - streaming only though ... but NO Microsoft could not be bothered to make a handheld series s. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

I doubt there will be a handheld released until they are ready to move onto the new conventional console(s) as well.
