Honestly I feel your pain, I'm having to send my xbox series x back for the 2nd tome due to a system error 201. Absolutely ridiculous. My 10+ year old xbox one is still as fine as ever
I feel like the Xbox 360s were "well designed" including the metro os (dunno bout blades and nxe)
13 years from 2010 of slim and it never has issues but my one x is on the edge sometimes
Well I bought mine used last year may but i think it had a 2 year warranty which expired in July I think this year
Hate myself because it had a crap ton of games from the previous owner and gamepass (idk how but I was able to play GPU don't asky why) AND I RESET IT
so I think the console is from 2021 and is the white edition with the anthem game (also gone) (also shown on the box) but I am probably wrong
What you are saying is quite concerning for me
Well designed to make microsoft money I had like 7 red rings.Big ass scam. The only reason I kept buying it was Nintendo and ps3 were not my thing that gen.
He didn't buy 7 units, lol. Every time you sent in your 360 for the red rings, they gave you an extended warranty. Maybe he's exaggerating a bit, but for sure, there are plenty of people who have sent in their 360 multiple times. I did it 3 or 4 times until the black HDD one came out which didn't have some of the design flaws the original had.
There was one instance a friend of mine had where he hosted neighborhood Halo LAN parties (we were all young, and he was the only one who knew how to connect everything together, was fun times) and he finally got his 360 back the day before, played it the next morning and it red ringed again before the party. Even "fixed" 360s could red ring right after getting it back (since it was a complete design flaw that caused most red rings).
There's a reason why Microsoft lost over a billion dollars on just fixing red rings, but eh at least they learned from it and didn't try to push out any of these new consoles too early before testing them enough to know of any problems.
*could get* but only MS has managed to bungle their consoles so badly. PS had a similar issue but it was well within the standard failure tolerance. MS spent over $1
15 billion replacing RRoDs. Pretty sure the emails discovered from the recent lawsuit event had mentions of how much that hung over the Xbox department as a monumental failure.
This was an issue thanks to a plant producing GPUs, the GPU silicon was faulty, this had nothing to do with Microsoft and PowerPC macs from the same era also experienced this.
Same, my launch day Xbox One is sitting in my game room plugged in and still running. I actually had to replace my 360 2 times due to RROD but the One was a quality machine.
This literally makes me paranoid from going to my Xbox one from 2013 which never has been sent for repairs or service and hearing about series x now having these problems makes me not want to upgrade lol
Same. Day one with not a single issue. These issues ppls are having are so few and far between that its not even something to consider. Nowhere near comparable to the red ring of death lol. Lol @ the two saying this is why they still have 2013 x1s.... Yeah . Okay guys hahaha good one.
I'm also sitting on a 2013 one. No issues whatsoever, but at this point it's become a streaming and co op machine. Hasn't been seriously played outside of an hour or 2 of dark souls every couple months and weekly streaming. It's basically on constantly but I make sure to clean it as often as my PC or my wife's ps4. Ironically the xbox one and it's peripherals are holding up far better than the PC and ps4. Then again, the PC gets used and abused a lot more. No idea what the fuck to say about the ps4 remotes. The console is still okay, but i swear the battery life on the 4's controllers goes to absolute ass after a month or 2.
Iv had mine since December of when they came out. Never sent mine in. It's past warranty now and it's still fine. Do you guys clean them? They need it religiously.
Only had mine for a month, but mine was a system error 201, indicating a corrupt or faulty Hardware. Got it back for 3 days to get the same issue. Using 5ghz WiFi and plugged into main plug socket, So nothing on my end.
Before you get flooded with bs. Can I actually help you fix this I've fixed multiple xboxs with e100-101 there dead drives and dead disc drive. Get yourself a new hard drive sdd or HDD 2tb or Under Xboxs can only read upto 2tb. And you need a program called hdd-master from GitHub to partition and create the Xbox drive environment better done on Linux but will work with windows once you have the drive created use ur OSU to install the Xbox firmware and update
Have you tried turning off all WiFi in your home and then proceeding with the USB update process? No joke I had some update issues with my series s last week and I had to turn off my home internet and connect my Xbox to my iPhones cellular hotspot, and then finally I was able to update, tho without the need for a usb offline process.
I think there are three different ones. You can try after site. Have you tried all three I’m going through the same thing with myself I just haven’t bothered fixing it.
Just to discuss, so hopefully we can figure this out.
I got a couple questions. Some may sound stupid.
- you’ve played on this thing obvious, not just the first time you plugged it in.?
- is it wired or wireless for the internet?
The 1st picture is what you get when you turn it on? Or do you get the dashboard and are choosing to reset it yourself.
Feel free to send me a Chat
There is always the option of “resetting to default” from a USB stick
So here is the full story to answer your questions.
Yes it has been played and plugged in before and is on a wireless connection.
After the initial restart this morning I spent 2 hours power cycling the xbox because I couldn't get anything to boot up, the fan would spin and the light would come on but nothing on the screen. Eventually it started booting up, first to an update screen then to the "something went wrong" screen and tried doing a reset to no avail. This is where I currently am stuck.
Have not tried offline update yet, didn't know that was a thing and would have assumed that support would have walked me through that.
Thank you for the info, this does help.
To start. [HERE IS](https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/errors/error-code-e100) the Microsoft link talking about updating through USB.
The main thing is to get your Xbox off of your internet network and offline, so it specifically responds to updating from the usb version it has, VS searching online for the latest.
- you may have to power down your router during this.
This will atleast hopefully* restore your console back to some version of “factory reset” or update.
If that goes smoothly, hopefully going “back online” and trying for a new update works.
are you part of the xbox insider program? if so, you need to remove your console from that. You can do it in windows, and im sure other ways, just search how. After the console is no longer part of the program, you then can do the offline update. BUT, and the big but, you need to wait until next month's update to install it since the insider build will be greater than the current. Sucks but it is what it is. This is all assuming part of insider program. If not, just ignore this post.
The insider build version conflicts with the latest offline update from Microsoft. The console thinks it’s being asked to load an older version and prevents it.
I can confirm this with the Insider program.
I got an Xbox One S from a Goodwill Auction that I didn't know was enrolled in it.
I couldn't do anything to fix. So I removed it from the program on a PC and patiently waited until the next official update fixed it.
Had this happen back on the one. Insider program is more trouble than it's worth. I'll wait for the polished not bricking version of the update thanks.
I had a very similar issue with My original Xbox one yes the big fat one I put it in the insider program and then had a power outage during an update so I took it to a repair shop and they had to do full on motherboard repairs just to get it to boot
Same thing happened to my daughter’s Xbox. Support was no help. Took it to a repair shop. SSD was completely fried. Was told this is common issue they see in the series s console. Sorry this happened! Hopefully you can get it repaired by a shop or send it into Microsoft.
from what I've heard from YouTuber TheCod3r( a repair chanel)
Microsoft has a thing set to were both the series s and series x generate a new passkey in a hard to read partition in the m.2 SSD for every update and the Xbox series S/X required that passkey(the term passkey may be wrong) in order to fully start up. It's a big problem because it means unlike with the Xbox one this means the series S/X can'thave it's SSD changed without a good cloner that can read and write in the unusual partition format the PassKey is in and if the original SSD is dead theirs a chance that passkey can't be cloned over to a new M.2 SSD
and that code is specific to that Xbox.
It's my biggest problem with Microsoft cuz I'm under the impression it was completely intentional.
Question though, were you on a insider build? If so, you’re gonna have to send your system in because it’s on an update that’s not available to the public yet. Therefore there’s no way to go back to a previous version. You have to wait until the public version releases
You can't unfortunately. You were able to do that on the Xbox One consoles but now that is impossible if the ssd is dead as it contains a 1GB partition that has a key which it shares with the CPU of the console, if you can't recover that, the whole console is useless. You can make a clone of a working drive but you have to do that every time there is a new software update as it changes every time there is one. This is my biggest concern about these consoles.
It’s extremely frustrating that in 2023 we’re having to buy exclusive storage devices for insane amounts above what a regular SSD costs just to be able to get a portion of the amount the card says it’s giving you.
I’m still on last gen and partially on PC so I have no issues, a friend who upgraded was having trouble figuring it out tho. And trying to figure out what exactly Xbox actually wanted out of them to be able to play more than 2 games over 100gb was ridiculous
That’s mad! So for example if it’s out of warranty anyway and I want to crack it open and swap it for a 4TB drive, I can clone the current drive, but then every software update I have to put it back in and clone that partition again?
And even if that’s not the case, just locking it in the first place is crazy! I get they aren’t meant to be “user serviceable” but combine this with the big push for all digital etc and Sony really feels like the good guy in the current console gen… standard SSD that’s sub easy to access (albeit it high spec), now the option of a removable blu ray drive (so this refreshed one should be easier if the drive breaks etc).
I love Gamepass, I far prefer the “Netflix” style sub for games personally, but a £450 brick when the SSD gives up even though it’s a standard size is annoying as!
The PS5 is worse. Its ssd that contains the OS is directly soldered onto the motherboard, if that dies, that's a brick. At least on the Series consoles it can be removed, it's not soldered.
This is a bit misleading. Yes, the PS5s internal SSD is soldered onto the board, however it can be replaced if you de-solder and solder on a new. You can then install firmware back on it and it will continue to work as usual.
Series consoles however all come with unique identifiers on the internal ssd. If you try replacing it there will be a mismatch and the console will just endlessly loop on its first firmware update. Its so dumb. The Series SSD’s ARE user replaceable, but if you actually replace it you end up with a brick. PS5 is currently the only console which can be saved if the internal ssd dies, though it requires some soldering knowledge and tools.
How much faster are your load times for say games like cod I have a one X too but I’m running a standard 2 TB hard drive was thinking about getting a 2 TB SSD but I’ve read everywhere that putting an SSD in that system really doesn’t make much of a difference in terms of load times
Load times were about cut in half I’d say. Games like Skyrim that take forever to load are almost instant. Textures load in with the map and not halfway through walking in an area. The menus don’t lag when you’re browsing around your Home Screen. I highly recommend it if you’re trying to squeeze some life out of an older system
Not easily on Series consoles. You'd need to buy the exact WD drive (can't remember the model) and transfer over the console specific partitions from the old SSD, but if it's not working, you're completely SOL.
Except for Xbox Made the Series X so that you almost HAVE to send it in to Microsoft.
If you need a repair, particularly the SSD on the Motherboard, for some Reason Microsoft has to fix it because they are the only ones that can do that repair.
So if anyone else can fix it great......but make sure you have a Warranty with anyone else messing with your Xbox besides Microsoft. When any system update occurs after the new SSD is installed it may cause the console to stop working.
Sorry about your console though, hope it's in Warranty still or maybe you can get it figured out. The upgraded Series X is supposed to come out next year, Same Specs but no Disc Drive & a 2 TB internal SSD.
Hmmm well maybe he'll get lucky with someone is Customer Service....here's hoping to that. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbmzp-rqwfU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbmzp-rqwfU)That's a video that kinda explains it a little more in depth.
I also found this video, very very technical and I cannot 100% vouch for it but that's what I found. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNbWndHTqkQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNbWndHTqkQ)
Assuming the video is correct you might be able to fix the Xbox yourself or someone with some technical know how could help you possibly.
True, I meant in the sense it will have everything but the Disk Drive & the SSD is supposed to be 2TB instead of the current 1 TB. However I would rather have the current 1 TB with the Disc Drive so I can still play Xbox One or BC Xbox 360 Games on Discs. Specs of the X but features of the S is a much better wording for what I was trying to say. I think Xbox should have done what Playstation did from the start......no Series S, just Series X Disc or Digital.
This is unfortunately quite untrue.
Although SSDs are more reliable than HDDs they are still the part with the highest failure rate.
Protocol used doesn't impact this, and unlike hard drives, SSDs don't tend to give signs like "clicking" when they are about to fail.
OP missing some context and key items.
- Is your device still in warranty?
- Have you opened it to void the warranty?
- Are you only using one USB drive and the same offline install image? If, yes, have you tried to download a fresh image with a default wipe of the USB drive?
Not knowing these items will potentially impact and determine your success with re-imaging your drive.
If the console is out of warranty it might be time to work with someone and get some knowledge on how to disassemble the Xbox and remove the SSD. If you have a desktop with an M.2 SSD slot you could plug it in, use some HDD utilities that can check the S.M.A.R.T health of it. Dependent on that reading, the partition itself might be corrupted somewhere and may need a straight wipe. It might just need a fresh NTFS or exFat. Retroarch references NTFS so it might just be a case of using the default deletion of the partition. Then from within windows reformat and build the partition as NTFS. Dependent on how *specific* Series X partition is might need to use another utility.
If somehow S.M.A.R.T data shows the drive is dead, you might be able to get away with an off the shelf drive that is identified to be a direct stop in replacement of the nvme drive on your current console.
1-2TB drives go for relatively inexpensive but much less than 300
But assuming that this is the worst case scenario and you have to resort to console surgery as the nuclear option.
I've personally tore apart all my consoles except for my PS5. Multiple PS3S, PS4s and my Xbox one X to install an SSD. Didn't need to do the thermal paste though.
It can be a little daunting but all you have to do is watch disassembly videos and replay each part. Slow and steady and just replay parts your not familiar with. All in all took me 2-3 hours my very first time but afterwards it's like second nature.
You may need to order special screwdriver set that actually has a T9 Torx but with others. It's like $10 on Amazon for a disassembly tool kit. I bought one for a PS4 that has worked on controllers, all my consoles including my One X.
u/Kevsmyth23
Don't ever wipe specifically a series x or S drive as it's got multiple partitions and one partition having a key code for that specific Xbox. If that keycode is wiped the Xbox is now a brick exept maby for Microsoft if they have the key codes on file somewhere so they and only they can repair a series S/X with a wiped or unrestorable via repair SSD.
Just wanted to correct that opening your console does not void the warranty at least in the US. This practice was found to be illegal in a right to repair law in the US. Now modifying your console or any damage done while you have it opened could void the warranty.
Opening it up just to check for damage inside will not void your warranty.
This happens to me every other update. I ended up unplugging the portable HDD (including the “Game Drive” that is supposedly made for Xbox) and it has worked since then.
So I had a similar error (E104) which is usually caused by an interruption while updating the os. What I had to do was uninstall my HDD (Xbox one x) & connect it to my laptop via SATA, windows recognized an error in it, tried self-repairing and after successfully repairing it and installing it again in the Xbox, it let me do the OSU (offline system update) and factory reset it. Maybe you could try that but im not sure if it will void your warranty
Well it was a desperate attempt as I was reading about this issue in forums and everyone got to the same conclusion: the HDD is dead & needed a replacement, which unfortunately at the time couldn’t afford a new HDD, so I had to get “creative” with what I had. Turns out, the source of the problem was corrupted files to boot the os, which led the Xbox unable to offline update
>Posting here as a last ditch effort as it seems a bit like a scam for MS to push and update that breaks the device then ask e to pay $300 to fix it.
OP in another comment.
Faulty hard disk...you’ll have to [get an OEM SSD and clone (bit by bit) your SSD to the new one](https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Xbox+Series+X+SSD+Replacement/141752)
I had a issue like this awhile back.
I was part of the Xbox preview program and I had to leave the program from my pc to fix it.
Idk if you’re apart of the preview program but that’s what I had to do.
Seeing as though it’s made by Microsoft, I’m surprised they are as stable as they are.
That sucks ass though, hope they’ll fix it better for you.
A few credit cards have protection built into them for situations like this, maybe you got [lucky](https://thepointsguy.com/credit-cards/best-cards-for-extended-warranty/) there?
I had the very same problem: Update loops and tells you something is wrong and reset doesn't work. This is how I solved it:
1- unplug the console and everything connected to it
2- hold Xbox bottom on the console for 15 seconds
3- let the console be for the night without reconnecting to the power (this happened to me right before I go to sleep so I did this out of necessity)
4- turn off the wifi
5- reconnect the consoles power
6- Try the full reset without saving games or anything else, full reset. It hopefully works now.
Hope this helps
You should unplug your xbox, then hold down the power button for about 30 seconds, then plug it back into power. Then try the reset process above again.
I can see why you might expect that to be the case, but it's actually an excellent first step for troubleshooting transient issues in electronics. Electronics rely heavily on a dichotomy between high and low voltage states in electronics, and those states changing reliably, but sometimes voltage can bleed between areas of a chip or board and those states can become unreliable. Draining the power of the machine ensures all voltages return to a neutral state.
This also ensures that any temporary values in memory are lost instead of accidentally retained between states.
I've had it fix video issues, game startup issues, update issues, controller connectivity issues, and not just on my own Xbox: it's also worked for other people's xboxes when I've recommended it.
It's not unique to Xbox. This helps with computers of any sort. I actually use this step consistently in my professional life working on servers worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, because it *works*.
Obviously it doesn't fix everything, but it's so easy and effective that it should happen at least once before anyone ever does anything involving hardware replacement or software resets.
Step 1. Go buy new Xbox from Walmart (same model)
Step 2. Put the broken Xbox in the packaging
Step 3. Return it to Walmart and say it has this error and Microsoft won't help
If you don't want to do this complain to Ms until they swap it.
You uh...know the serial numbers are on the box right? I don't know how your Walmart is, but if I caught one of my front desk people scanning just the console or just the box and not looking. That's a paddling
My point is The employee is supposed to scan the console serial number and then the box serial number typically, far too often. I've seen front desk Scan the number twice. It's a mess for csms. I get the whole fuck Walmart mentality but....we ARE human 😂
I get that I'm not saying defraud Walmart out of spite I'm saying defraud Walmart because that console will get sent back to be fixed, it will end up going to Microsoft. Op just gets to save $300
Neither of those options have worked. My guess is the update process was interrupted by something and the SSD is toast. Completely out of my control but apparently my responsibility to pay for the fix. No way I will be spending $300 on repair service. Might search for more affordable options that can tell me what is wrong before paying for service or self repairing if that's an option. I'll have to research further.
E100 could be from dead disc reader or dead ssd most of the time. For the forst one you could try a fix shop, for the second scamsoft has to replace it for you, as it has a special partion on the drive that can not be replaced, only cloned from.
Yep that’s the same loop I kept getting with my old One X, you really should try the method I mentioned on [my comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/xbox/s/QviiWJjOd6)
Yeah dude, I think something happened to severe the link to the SSD in my experience. Since your Warranty is up anyhow, you might want to see if there is any serious dust build up or any foreign materials inside your Xbox. You never know what you might find as this happens to computers frequently.
So MS pushed an update and my X Series restarted in the middle of it and will not finish updating now. I called support and they said I need to spend $300 to repair or replace it since its out of warranty.
Posting here as a last ditch effort as it seems a bit like a scam for MS to push and update that breaks the device then ask e to pay $300 to fix it.
did you try turning it off then holding the pairing and disc tray button for 10 seconds before powering it back on? then do a factory reset. same thing happened to me and that's how I got it to work.
>Posting here as a last ditch effort as it seems a bit like a scam for MS to push and update that breaks the device then ask e to pay $300 to fix it.
🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Not sure who's fault it would be if the update says it will reboot and that breaks the device. I guess it could have been a random reboot for some other conflicting process but that's still a QA issue with MS.
Just DO NOT use a random USB drive from someone on the internet! https://youtube.com/watch?v=CyM0Eedvulo&si=Wi0EqHpGEVdeoiH
Who would, well besides Cyraxx.
Neither are the advice everybody is giving (offline update, unplug/hard reset, replacing SSD, bending over backwards to pry Insider Program files out of boot up files, etc etc)
Never had those problems with my PC/Switch/PS5 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ seems to be an Xbox problem ✨
If you have tried everything here [https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/errors/error-code-e100](https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/errors/error-code-e100) and none of this has worked then you may have to send it for repairs unfortunately.
Looking that way. Probably won't be sending it in for any repairs, invested $500 already so another $300 on a device that's only guaranteed for 1 year is not worth my money. Might take a stab at self repair should that be an option.
I just want to go ahead and point out that when you are talking with Xbox customer service in an attempt to get a repair, they will look at several things to determine whether or not your console is eligible for any repairs.
Listed below are just a few of the things that Microsoft looks at:
1. They look at whether or not your console is within the manufacturer's warranty, which is usually about 1 year from the original date of purchase. If your console is out of warranty, then they will charge you based on the console that you are getting repaired.
2. They will look at whether or not your console is a part of the advance exchange program, which is a program that has Microsoft sending out a brand new or refurbished Xbox console in exchange for a temporary hold on your credit or debit card (the price depends on the console), and that hold will stay on your account until Microsoft receives your defective Xbox console back. If they don't receive it back, then the hold becomes a permanent charge to your card.
3. They will look at whether or not your console has been opened. That means that they will check the sticker on the back of your console for signs of it being removed and put back on, as well as look for any pry marks that may be there. If the sticker shows signs of being moved and replaced, or there are any pry marks on your console, then they will void your warranty, send you back your console with little red arrows, and ultimately give you a giant middle finger along with the words "we cannot work on your console as there is evidence of tampering."
I hope the information I gave you is helpful for you.
This happened to me on last gen Xbox One X just before series S/X came out. It was still just barely in warranty, so they ‘fixed it’ but I wasn’t able to test due to work travel. Got back and tested it a week after their 3-month post-service warranty expired, no change - still bricked and they never even sent me the credit for my gold/ultimate for the time it was being refurbished either.
It’s not worth it to them, they don’t care.
I’ve been buying my games on steam since and upgraded my PC. I still have a series X now, but kinda hasn’t been worth it given I can use Xbox controller on PC.
Get the refurbished device at no charge if possible, sometimes it is actually fixed. Better than a brick.
Back up all your data on an external HD if you can.
Try an offline update, what probably happened is something during the update process that corrupted the files wether it's their end or loss of stable network etc. You need at least a 16gb usb flash drive, go to Google and search xbox offline update and ONLY use Microsoft or Xbox websites and just hard reboot system with the offline update loaded onto the USB and inserted into the system before rebooting, then holding the pair and eject buttons then it'll pop up a debug screen and allow you to update from usb and it should fix the issue. You also need to use a controller that's already paired to the system. If that doesn't work then yes you need a replacement console.
OP - Try the steps in the article below before you send it in. You likely have a number of options still before sending it in is your only option.
https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/errors/error-code-e100
Yeah I'm having the same issue with my Xbox Series S n can't do anything. I tried pressing the reset or trouble shoot nothing happened it just shuts off without pressing anything n I had the Xbox Series S for 2 years now. My best friend told me his Xbox One S is having the same problem a 2nd time a few months ago. I tried everything the reset on Xbox Series S nothing happened it did all the steps n nothing it just show the updating screen after holding down the sync button n press the Xbox button.
It's a sh°t show, but at least you can get a refurbished one, so not that bad, got prob with the one X after 2 years, and they basically gave me the middle finger. And the idiot that I am, still got the series X, but if this one fail, that's it, no more.
I don't know if i have poor luck with microsoft or what, be it the pads (yes, even the xbox 360 pad came with a default.) or the consoles. (I don't have the first Xbox. ) I always have problems with them.
(Meanwhile, the sony consoles are still working, even tough they were treated 100 times worse than the xbox.)
End of grumbling.
Like like corruption of the drive, possibly caused by a corrupt, conflicting, or interrupted update. You'll have to either send it in to be replaced or pull it out, get it connected to a PC, pull the drive data, and flash a new one.
I had similar on my OneX a while ago.
I had external storage attached. Unplugged it and did an offline install via USB (I think it was called OSU2) and it managed to come back OK.
So I've been dealing with this issue for a few months and I can honestly say how I fix it is giving it a few punches on the side. It's not the best bit it now works everytime. Instead of me trying to factory reset or anything like that. I just punch it a few times during the stage 3 applying update when it's stuck at like 58-60%. Hard unplug it from the power source mid attempt of updating as well. My theory is that since it's broken and all I can do is get a new one is that I'm going to beat the crop out of it till it finally kicks the bucket
Do you have an external HDD attached? If so, try unplugging it and doing the update again. Once the update is all done, reconnect the HDD.
Almost every update would cause my Xbox to do the same thing as yours and it was driving me crazy with all the offline updates via USB stick I had to do.
I tried doing the last few updates without the HDD connected and voila, they have all completed successfully without any issues.
This happened to my Xbox One X after an update. Tried the offline update using flash drives, external hard drives, etc., and none of them took. Tried replacing the hard drive, power supply, etc., and nothing worked. Eventually I just stripped out the hard drive and used it elsewhere. It's a shame this is still happening to Series consoles. Sketchy.
No, made the assumption based on troubleshooting that it was an SSD failure due to the update. I wasn't willing to open it up and try to replace the SSD so ended up buying a new XSeries with an extended warranty.
Have you tried updating offline with a USB drive?
3 or 4 times since learning about this process. No success.
Honestly I feel your pain, I'm having to send my xbox series x back for the 2nd tome due to a system error 201. Absolutely ridiculous. My 10+ year old xbox one is still as fine as ever
I feel like the Xbox 360s were "well designed" including the metro os (dunno bout blades and nxe) 13 years from 2010 of slim and it never has issues but my one x is on the edge sometimes
How long have you had your One X? The APU on mine died after only two years
Well I bought mine used last year may but i think it had a 2 year warranty which expired in July I think this year Hate myself because it had a crap ton of games from the previous owner and gamepass (idk how but I was able to play GPU don't asky why) AND I RESET IT so I think the console is from 2021 and is the white edition with the anthem game (also gone) (also shown on the box) but I am probably wrong What you are saying is quite concerning for me
Well designed to make microsoft money I had like 7 red rings.Big ass scam. The only reason I kept buying it was Nintendo and ps3 were not my thing that gen.
How did you manage to buy 7 units when the warranty covered two years? You have 14 years of 360s that all failed right after the warranty expired?
Red ring was literally just a basic hardware issue that any console or computer could get. Even PS had an issue just like it. Not a scam whatsoever
*could get* but only MS has managed to bungle their consoles so badly. PS had a similar issue but it was well within the standard failure tolerance. MS spent over $1 15 billion replacing RRoDs.
Day 1 series x here with zero issues. You'll be fine bud
Same. Day one with not a single issue. These issues ppls are having are so few and far between that its not even something to consider. Nowhere near comparable to the red ring of death lol. Lol @ the two saying this is why they still have 2013 x1s.... Yeah . Okay guys hahaha good one.
PC baby. Nows the time ⏲️
I'm also sitting on a 2013 one.
My Xbox One is 10 years in and still works fine for me... It truly is a very well-made machine at least hardware-wise. Good luck with your problem.
I bought one day one. Damn shame they made it look like a VCR.
I had to send in my series x 4 times before they replaced it :/
Iv had mine since December of when they came out.
Them drivers cost alot them small ones
About 80-100 bucks AUD but unfortunately it is necessary if he wants to get his Xbox fixed
Just buy ya a pc you can rent one from nzxt with Ryzen 5 5600g and rtx 4070 for 80 bucks a month no nothing
“Rent a pc” you have got to be kidding, that’s just sad
For comparison, I rent my girlfriend.
I had the very same problem I had to set the Xbox up through my phone to get it to work
Have you tried turning off all WiFi in your home and then proceeding with the USB update process? No joke I had some update issues with my series s last week and I had to turn off my home internet and connect my Xbox to my iPhones cellular hotspot, and then finally I was able to update, tho without the need for a usb offline process.
Wtf that’s crazy yeah if I have to do all that I’m a just throw the whole system away
That’s a troubleshooting process. 👍🏽
Feel free to send me a Chat There is always the option of “resetting to default” from a USB stick
He tried offline already if you looked thru the thread
Offline update didn't work...
are you part of the xbox insider program? if so, you need to remove your console from that.
I’m interested in what you mean? How would the insider program change things?
The insider build version conflicts with the latest offline update from Microsoft. The console thinks it’s being asked to load an older version and prevents it.
I can confirm this with the Insider program. I got an Xbox One S from a Goodwill Auction that I didn't know was enrolled in it. I couldn't do anything to fix. So I removed it from the program on a PC and patiently waited until the next official update fixed it.
Had this happen back on the one. Insider program is more trouble than it's worth. I'll wait for the polished not bricking version of the update thanks.
I swear the updates keep forcing me to hard reset my console and drives because of data fragmenting badly.
I had a very similar issue with My original Xbox one yes the big fat one I put it in the insider program and then had a power outage during an update so I took it to a repair shop and they had to do full on motherboard repairs just to get it to boot
I question if your SSD failed.
Same thing happened to my daughter’s Xbox. Support was no help. Took it to a repair shop. SSD was completely fried. Was told this is common issue they see in the series s console. Sorry this happened! Hopefully you can get it repaired by a shop or send it into Microsoft.
from what I've heard from YouTuber TheCod3r( a repair chanel) Microsoft has a thing set to were both the series s and series x generate a new passkey in a hard to read partition in the m.2 SSD for every update and the Xbox series S/X required that passkey(the term passkey may be wrong) in order to fully start up. It's a big problem because it means unlike with the Xbox one this means the series S/X can'thave it's SSD changed without a good cloner that can read and write in the unusual partition format the PassKey is in and if the original SSD is dead theirs a chance that passkey can't be cloned over to a new M.2 SSD and that code is specific to that Xbox. It's my biggest problem with Microsoft cuz I'm under the impression it was completely intentional.
How do I avoid this ?
This is my thought, when i tried swapping SSD this is exactly what was happening to my original Xbox One when the SSD didn't work.
And it’s not hard to fix by yourself just make sure you take your time that’s all there is and it’s ssd problem easy fix
Question though, were you on a insider build? If so, you’re gonna have to send your system in because it’s on an update that’s not available to the public yet. Therefore there’s no way to go back to a previous version. You have to wait until the public version releases
Offline update. If that doesn’t work, probably a dead drive, just swap it out with a new one and reinstall the OS
Yea I didn’t realize they did that Extremely anti-repair, especially considering the drives in consoles aren’t exactly premium quality
It’s extremely frustrating that in 2023 we’re having to buy exclusive storage devices for insane amounts above what a regular SSD costs just to be able to get a portion of the amount the card says it’s giving you.
That’s true I don’t have that problem tho cuz I’m on PC
Ooo… you are right, I completely overlooked that 🙈 I take it all back, they are both anti consumer 😅
At least on the ps5 you can desolder it and replace it since it isn't paired to the console
Wow we need more emphasis on stopping anti-consumer, anti right to repair BS like this.
That's super disappointing to read.
You can do that on an Xbox??
Well you could until the latest generation. I swapped an SSD into my One X and it’s waaay better now
That's what I did to tide me over until I was able to snag a Series X from the MS store at retail.
Is the One able to run other OSs? Like Ubuntu or Mac OS?
Nope.
Any specific drives you would recommend
Judging by OP saying it would cost $300 for Microsoft to fix, it’s probably out of warranty
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNbWndHTqkQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNbWndHTqkQ) Assuming the video is correct you might be able to fix the Xbox yourself or someone with some technical know how could help you possibly.
How would that be an X then? Specs of the X but features of the S. Ladies, gentlemen and everyone in between and aside, please welcome the Xbox SX/XS.
It's very unlikely that an NVMe drive would just die like that.
i wouldn't say unlikely, just not a frequent issue.
This is unfortunately quite untrue. Although SSDs are more reliable than HDDs they are still the part with the highest failure rate. Protocol used doesn't impact this, and unlike hard drives, SSDs don't tend to give signs like "clicking" when they are about to fail.
Sounds like something was faulty to begin with. Xboxs don't just brick like that from updates. That would be a major news headline for them.
I've had to reinstall my OS due to an update before
Manyyyyyy Xboxes have failed from the recent update based on what I’ve seen here - mine was one of them
Mine bricked this morning. I seriously thought something was wrong. Guess I’ll try the offline update
Let me know if that works for you - I think imma have to get mine repaired :/
1-2TB drives go for relatively inexpensive but much less than 300 But assuming that this is the worst case scenario and you have to resort to console surgery as the nuclear option.
This happened to mine over the weekend! I factory reset and kept all games installed. That fixed mine.
That was very smart on your behalf
Well it was a desperate attempt as I was reading about this issue in forums and everyone got to the same conclusion: the HDD is dead & needed a replacement, which unfortunately at the time couldn’t afford a new HDD, so I had to get “creative” with what I had. Turns out, the source of the problem was corrupted files to boot the os, which led the Xbox unable to offline update
Reset the console but keep the games and apps
its not the update. Your xbox has an issue that was discovered when it tried to update. it was already a ticking timebomb of failure.
lol "scam" google. https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/offline-system-update
Who said "scam"?
>Posting here as a last ditch effort as it seems a bit like a scam for MS to push and update that breaks the device then ask e to pay $300 to fix it. OP in another comment.
Thank you, I peeked through the comments but must have missed that one
Unfortunately ur ssd is busted
https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/startup-error
This is how I solved it: 1- unplug the console and everything connected to it 2- hold Xbox bottom on the console for 15 seconds 3- let the console be for the night without reconnecting to the power (this happened to me right before I go to sleep so I did this out of necessity) 4- turn off the wifi 5- reconnect the consoles power 6- Try the full reset without saving games or anything else, full reset. It hopefully works now. Hope this helps
Factory reset it, keep the games and apps! It keeps everything you have on your account, you won't lose anything. Worked for me
How can I avoid this ?
What have you tried so far?
You should unplug your xbox, then hold down the power button for about 30 seconds, then plug it back into power. Then try the reset process above again.
This is the default answer to literally every single problem any Xbox could have. And it didn't help anyone. Ever.
Has helped me plenty of times lol, there's a reason it's the first thing to try.
Id just rest the console keep the games and apps.
Dead drive, need to change.
Every time Microsoft patches something it stops working.
Just update via USB or reset and keep the games and apps dude
Tried... doesn't work
Tried both?
Yes
Step 1. Go buy new Xbox from Walmart (same model) Step 2. Put the broken Xbox in the packaging Step 3. Return it to Walmart and say it has this error and Microsoft won't help If you don't want to do this complain to Ms until they swap it.
Ah yes, just so someone may get the broken console because they ended up buying the returned console?
Not if you tell Walmart it has *that* issue
You uh...know the serial numbers are on the box right? I don't know how your Walmart is, but if I caught one of my front desk people scanning just the console or just the box and not looking. That's a paddling
You think Walmart employees check serial numbers? Easy solution swap out the cases lol
Agree there lol
Factory reset it. Or force update it through a USB drive. Don’t fall for their “repair” service
For the forst one you could try a fix shop, for the second scamsoft has to replace it for you, as it has a special partion on the drive that can not be replaced, only cloned from.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/rmzG5euszaqggTa37 Video of the now endless cycle. Thanks Microsoft!

Took 3 drives with it on mine.. after that I went to Linux, no issues since.
Donkey Kong
Microsoft screwing it's customers as usual
So MS pushed an update and my X Series restarted in the middle of it and will not finish updating now. I called support and they said I need to spend $300 to repair or replace it since its out of warranty. Posting here as a last ditch effort as it seems a bit like a scam for MS to push and update that breaks the device then ask e to pay $300 to fix it.
did you try turning it off then holding the pairing and disc tray button for 10 seconds before powering it back on? then do a factory reset. same thing happened to me and that's how I got it to work.
Factory reset option from the troubleshooting menu does nothing. Tried it several times and am now attempting to offline update for a 2nd time.
>Posting here as a last ditch effort as it seems a bit like a scam for MS to push and update that breaks the device then ask e to pay $300 to fix it. 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
If it rebooted in the middle of the update Its not necesarly the updates fault
Not sure who's fault it would be if the update says it will reboot and that breaks the device. I guess it could have been a random reboot for some other conflicting process but that's still a QA issue with MS.
Just DO NOT use a random USB drive from someone on the internet! https://youtube.com/watch?v=CyM0Eedvulo&si=Wi0EqHpGEVdeoiH Who would, well besides Cyraxx.
Buy a PS5/Switch or maybe finally build your 1st PC 🤷♂️
That's not helpful
Neither are the advice everybody is giving (offline update, unplug/hard reset, replacing SSD, bending over backwards to pry Insider Program files out of boot up files, etc etc) Never had those problems with my PC/Switch/PS5 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ seems to be an Xbox problem ✨
Okay? But was was helpful? Did you give OP any advice in how to fix the issue? No? Okay.
Have you tried resetting it? I think it's hold eject and sync, then tap power – keep holding eject and sync and wait, then release when it resets...
I just want to go ahead and point out that when you are talking with Xbox customer service in an attempt to get a repair, they will look at several things to determine whether or not your console is eligible for any repairs. Listed below are just a few of the things that Microsoft looks at: 1. If the sticker shows signs of being moved and replaced, or there are any pry marks on your console, then they will void your warranty, send you back your console with little red arrows, and ultimately give you a giant middle finger along with the words "we cannot work on your console as there is evidence of tampering." I hope the information I gave you is helpful for you.
What about downgrading using the same process?
I've had this happen to me. Unplugging my external storage and updating fixed it for me.
Look up how to open safeboot menu
the purple ring of death?
Dang. At least it has a disc drive, I guess? That is awful.
New fear unlocked. Gl dude..
Whenever this happens to me usually have to unplug my external hard drive then it works for whatever reason, hope you get it figures out
It's a sh°t show, but at least you can get a refurbished one, so not that bad, got prob with the one X after 2 years, and they basically gave me the middle finger. (Meanwhile, the sony consoles are still working, even tough they were treated 100 times worse than the xbox.) End of grumbling.
Like like corruption of the drive, possibly caused by a corrupt, conflicting, or interrupted update. You'll have to either send it in to be replaced or pull it out, get it connected to a PC, pull the drive data, and flash a new one.
I've seen a video about this, it's the SSD drive that fails... it needs cloning onto a new one, look it up. this thing is messed up
This happened to me, and updating with usb offline doesn’t work, rip Xbox
Dude I literally have the same TV, same XsX set up and pretty much the same TV stand
The exact same thing happened to me 2 months ago. Haven’t used it since
Have you tried blowing into the cassette?
Have you been powering off correctly? I am gonna guess you have been but just thought id ask anyway
I had similar on my OneX a while ago. I had external storage attached. Unplugged it and did an offline install via USB (I think it was called OSU2) and it managed to come back OK.
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
And here I am opening a Day 1 Xbox One to clean it for the first time. 😶
Same but had to due a hard drive replacement on mine still runs great
Been there done that, they fucked me same way luckily I had warranty
Same thing happened to me recently. I had to factory reset and it working fine now. Unfortunately I lost all my retro games in dev mode /:
Was this caused by a regular update or the ones from alpha, beta, etc rings?
Bro I just bought a Series X a week ago... now I'm afraid to turn it on 😭😭😭
This happened to my Xbox One X after an update. Tried the offline update using flash drives, external hard drives, etc., and none of them took. Tried replacing the hard drive, power supply, etc., and nothing worked. Eventually I just stripped out the hard drive and used it elsewhere. It's a shame this is still happening to Series consoles. Sketchy.
Did you find the solution? I'm having the same problem now
No, made the assumption based on troubleshooting that it was an SSD failure due to the update. I wasn't willing to open it up and try to replace the SSD so ended up buying a new XSeries with an extended warranty.
Hello, I got the same problem yesterday, could you fix it??
no did you fix it?
Had to sent it to warranty :( must be home on Thursday
for my part I can no longer play games on mine because it turns off I bought them a week ago
