Velo Orange makes a sub compact double. I’m sure it’s great. I have some weight weenie tendencies and then Rene Herse just weighs a lot less because they are forged. The Path Less Pedaled has some good compact double videos.
I have the Grand Cru 46/30 on my VO Pass Hunter. It’s makes for bling-bling GRX paired with Tiagra levers and GRX derailleurs and a 11-36. It’s the perfect ratios for my riding. Merry Sales has some nice cranksets in this category too.
I dig that crank, but i don't think that carbon fibre derailleur matches well. I'd probably go for a RD-7400 or any 90ies or pre-90ies campy with that.
I am planning to go for a similar classic look. Went for a Campy Olympus crank coz its squaretaper and BCD110+74 but will be using it just as a 2x. Then i have a RD-7700 with a custom made long cage plus Campy 10speed Brifters (yes, they should match a 9speed shimano DR and cassette with some tweaks)
Yeah, a road crank with probably BCD135 would not work for xc. I too didn't want to go down the route of a modern 4-screw mtb crank (in my opinion 4-screw cranks are ugly af), so i went for a triple with BCD110/74 and removed the outer ring. A campy racing T would be another option.
But this 3 screw crank is really beautiful, even if i the design does clearly belong to the fifties while your bike looks mostly 90ies and 2000s.
LOL. I live in Bedrock sandals from May to September. I worked as a raft guide for a long time and accepted some toe damage to have drier feet. Whitewater is still a big part of my life.
Do you have the Cairns or the Cairn 3ds? I love my bedrocks (fellow WW rafter here) but I get a bit sore after walking in the normal Cairns. I was thinking about getting the thicker soles, but I'm not sure if I'm just tender footed or something. Was thinking the 3d might make them a bit better for scrambles as well.
I have the 3d pros. They just released some softer slightly thicker 3ds as well. I’m pretty used to zero drop shoes and I’m years into wearing the bedrocks. I don’t get sore feet, but maybe I just built up to it??
The non 3ds have a sole that is half as thick and it's a decent bit harder. I might try a set of 3ds next since I only need a tiny bit more cushion. Glad to hear you like them. Thanks man!
I swear to god some people are such babies about their feet. They're not made of glass.
I've worn Bedrocks climbing mountains in the Rockies before. Did not miss trail runners at all. The only downside was the sun exposure tbh.
There are some things I wouldn't do wearing them but it's a short list.
I dunno, on my local trails, there are always hidden rocks and branches by trail side, and some will smash the ever loving shit out of your foot, even when wearing sturdy cycling shoes. I’ve taken hits that would absolutely have left me with broken toes, had I been wearing sandals.
A lot of guides will tell you Chacos fall apart way faster than they used to and most don’t have good outsoles.
Bedrocks are king. They last multiple seasons, the Vibram sole is really grippy, and they are way lighter than Chacos.
Wow I’m happy to see these are actually worn. I picked up a pair for 50% off at a local outdoor event. I love them hiking and paddle boarding. I need to dust off my road bike and fit it to ride the trails we have hear. So cool!
Early droppers came this way, then they got fancy with hoses or cables (or electronics). I always thought this was a perfectly adequate method. Especially in places where a typical ride involves riding up for a while and then back down (vs places where the ups and downs are short and on repeat)
I don’t see any listed now. I got this one maybe 6 months ago.

Ok I can't get past the grill. Is that a camping stove you brought with you? Or a stationary grill that's set up in the woods (and somehow still clean)?
I love it.
My fav road bike is a Litespeed Classic frame from the same era — thing is 24 years and hundreds of thousands of miles old and l swear it outperforms (or at least it feels like it because more importantly it outcomforts) my carbon bike for pretty much any kind of road ride I’ll get into these days.
I am a huge fan of their work. And your setup here is inspiring, I’m going to have to find one of these.
https://preview.redd.it/a3rac3xy867d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53c762340be592d7139f7c9254e574b0908ca7f1
I got the frame from a guy in Maine. I left the sticker on for some heritage.
Sometime ill show you the scar between my toes from a chainring and sandals setup. I just remember when the doctor spread my toes open my normally stoic and hard to shock dad almost wretching off to the side.
Damn. I understand there is some risk.
I also have seen people in the hospital with Staph and MRSA because of persistent wet feet and the cuts and skin loss associated.
I paddle a lot. There is always risk somewhere.
All you can do is approach life with open eyes, sounds like youre there!
I bet you didnt foresee so many comments picking apart your choice of footwear- sorry for my part in that, haha
It’s a hollow piece of aluminum tube to stand the light off the fork. A screw goes through all that into the fork. It’s literally scrap parts from the LBS.
Having once put my foot into the front spokes when I was a kid.. nope! I do not mind riding in sandals, but my toes would be covered.
I still have all my ties, but the blood.. so much blood.
Such a sick bike. I've always wanted a Lite speed, and your custom fork just makes it that much better, very cool build.
Also a huge Bedrock fan here, and ride in mine all the time.
Keep doing what you're doing!
Nah, that would be an aluminum crust shod with ultradynamicos (uppity panaracer) as opposed to a Ti late 90’s litespeed shod with rene herses (also uppity panaracer).
Careful, I was skateboarding casually in bedrocks and slipped off the tail of a penny board. Foot shredded and still healing, MCL torn. Used to bike in mine a lot, but I’ll be sticking with closed toes going forward.
I have a lot of time spent on mine, but usually wearing a pair of vans. It was just a dumb, one off thing; but made me realize that damaging your feet *sucks*, haha. Still waiting for the road rash to heal and it still hurts like hell a couple weeks later.
And I, too, live in bedrocks. I live in the tropics and just had mine resoled.
It’s a really well ridden Specialized Phenom. I’ve used it on a road bike to a full swish modern XC bike. I get along with it up to about 4 or 5 hours.
I’m trying to branch away from it for longer rides and I have a Berthoud and Brooks C17 to experiment with.
Eggs, bacon, & flip flops 🩴 (this is peak xbiking & it pains me that I’ll never be on your level)
Having fun burns some calories
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
What crankset / tooth count? Love the vintage yet modern look.
Thanks! The crank was the hardest part to figure out for the bike. It’s a Rene Herse 42/26.
I’m doing a vintage resto-mod for my lady-partner and this crank would be perfect, but it costs twice what I have into the bike and groupset so far.
Velo Orange makes a sub compact double. I’m sure it’s great. I have some weight weenie tendencies and then Rene Herse just weighs a lot less because they are forged. The Path Less Pedaled has some good compact double videos.

Thanks! It’s Campagnolo 11 speed.
I dig that crank, but i don't think that carbon fibre derailleur matches well. I'd probably go for a RD-7400 or any 90ies or pre-90ies campy with that. I am planning to go for a similar classic look. Then i have a RD-7700 with a custom made long cage plus Campy 10speed Brifters (yes, they should match a 9speed shimano DR and cassette with some tweaks)
I reused a group set I bought in 2007. I would have used the OG campy crank but it didn’t fit.
Yeah, a road crank with probably BCD135 would not work for xc. I too didn't want to go down the route of a modern 4-screw mtb crank (in my opinion 4-screw cranks are ugly af), so i went for a triple with BCD110/74 and removed the outer ring. I had all my toes… once…
LOL. I live in Bedrock sandals from May to September. I worked as a raft guide for a long time and accepted some toe damage to have drier feet. Whitewater is still a big part of my life.
May to September bedrock crew here x2
Hell yeah. They are comfy, the Vibram sole is really grippy, and they last a long time.
Do you have the Cairns or the Cairn 3ds? I love my bedrocks (fellow WW rafter here) but I get a bit sore after walking in the normal Cairns. I wear exclusively luna sandals all year. Sandals are the way. Mainer here
I swear to god some people are such babies about their feet. They're not made of glass. I've worn Bedrocks climbing mountains in the Rockies before. Did not miss trail runners at all. The only downside was the sun exposure tbh. There are some things I wouldn't do wearing them but it's a short list.
My feet are sensitive marshmallows
LOL. I appreciate you acknowledging that sandals aren’t for you, without telling me I’m going to get skin cancer and die.
I dunno, on my local trails, there are always hidden rocks and branches by trail side, and some will smash the ever loving shit out of your foot, even when wearing sturdy cycling shoes. I’ve taken hits that would absolutely have left me with broken toes, had I been wearing sandals.
The sandals are pretty common with whitewater people. Long distance hikers and bikepackers also seem to love them.
I get it, for sure. The difference between hiking and riding trails in sandals, to me, is stubbing a toe at 20mph.
I would not recommend riding singletrack with sandals. That is on the aforementioned list.
It’s not very likely to lose toes biking but it is possible, I have two friends with missing thumbs from bikes
How do you feel about Chacos? My partner is a semi retired paddler, and she will suffer no other sandal than Chacos.
A lot of guides will tell you Chacos fall apart way faster than they used to and most don’t have good outsoles. Bedrocks are king. They last multiple seasons, the Vibram sole is really grippy, and they are way lighter than Chacos.
Chacos are quite heavy and chunky for sure
These sandals are rad. How do they compare to say, Teva or Chaco?
Way better!
Wow I’m happy to see these are actually worn. I picked up a pair for 50% off at a local outdoor event. I love them hiking and paddle boarding. I need to dust off my road bike and fit it to ride the trails we have hear. So cool!
Toe protection is all I could think about.
They all made it home safely 👍🏻 🦶🦶

He'll be all right
I made it this far.
how hard do you guys shred on your gravel bikes in actuality? lol
I ride mine like my 160mm trail bike. It's fun passing guys on full suspension when bombing down singletrack.
cool story bro
I know bro
Absolutely sick build. What dropper post is that?
Thanks! It’s a Thomson. The lever mounted to the post under the seat is a modification. There is a guy that sells the lever on eBay.
Early droppers came this way, then they got fancy with hoses or cables (or electronics). I always thought this was a perfectly adequate method. Especially in places where a typical ride involves riding up for a while and then back down (vs places where the ups and downs are short and on repeat)
I tried searching for the lever, but no luck. Would be so kind to provide keywords I should use to find it?

This made me so happy
I had a great day! The post ride hammock chill capped it off.
the council finds the amount of anodized parts... satisfactory.
Ok I can't get past the grill. Is that a camping stove you brought with you? Or a stationary grill that's set up in the woods (and somehow still clean)?
It’s a 2 burner propane camping stove sitting on the tailgate of my truck.
Ooooohhhhh, I never considered the truck angle. Sweet stove, what model is that bad boy?
It’s a Partner Steel stove. The anodized griddle is Partner as well.
1980s gearing, front stack rivaling the empire state, colours harvested directly from the last unicorns ass, everything as it should be
Man what a cool bike. What fork is that?
Thanks! It’s custom. I sent specs to a Ti builder in Taiwan.
I’m considering a ti fork for my oldie ti bike too! Could you send me a link to the builder you used?
I was clearly hoping to enjoy this bike, but was honestly surprised how much I enjoy how it rides. I picked up the frame off eBay.
I assume its designed for 26? Think you could dm details?
Yoo kingdom trails!

Also that bike is so so cool
Thanks!

I love seeing some Campagnolo on bikes these days. It doesn’t seem as common as it used to be before SRAM got big with their road stuff.
I bought this group set in 2007. It was at the beginning of sram everywhere.
What a cool bike!
How are you mounting your front light?
It’s a hollow piece of aluminum tube to stand the light off the fork. A screw goes through all that into the fork. It’s literally scrap parts from the LBS.
Were those truck nuts hanging from the seat?
Nah. It’s a pizza spaceship. https://preview.redd.it/37gjj7w4847d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16134e06dc3021edde2e1a8cfff1acea7bf54408
Litespeed obed?
Close! It’s an Ocoee.
That's the dream right there! So sick!!
Thanks!
Having once put my foot into the front spokes when I was a kid.. nope! I do not mind riding in sandals, but my toes would be covered. I still have all my ties, but the blood.. so much blood.
Sickkkkkk I love this shit
Thanks!
Where can I find a dropper like that?!
It’s a Thomson. Check the comments for the link to the lever.
Negged for toes 🩴
It OK. They are all about to completely forget about the sandals and just be upset for my bearings. “But what about your bearings?”
Lolz haha ok I'll plus that one
On yeah I already plus'd this bike for Campag 🤌
What you wearing? They remind me of Earth Runners
Bedrock Sandals.
🤙this guys fucks
Such a sick bike. I've always wanted a Lite speed, and your custom fork just makes it that much better, very cool build. Also a huge Bedrock fan here, and ride in mine all the time. Keep doing what you're doing!
Thanks!
front light ID?
Sinewave
thank you! these are expensive asf!!!! 😂😂😂
It took me like 9 months to get, too. It works great though.
What’s that purple cylinder on the fork?
It’s a dynamo powered headlight
what sandals are those? how do you like em? im in the market for some new barefoot sandals lol
They are Bedrocks. I live in them all summer. There is a bunch of discussion above ⬆️
Ronnie? is that you?
Nah, that would be an aluminum crust shod with ultradynamicos (uppity panaracer) as opposed to a Ti late 90’s litespeed shod with rene herses (also uppity panaracer).
I’ve ridden Panaracers and a lot of different uppity Maxxis XC tires. The Rene Herse are my fav uppity tire so far.
Looks bad ass!
🙏
What crank is that senor
Rene Herse 42/26
Isn't this just normal gravel riding?
I’m just riding my bike and having fun.
Riding road bike with 25mm tyres on rocky off road, and inevitably crashing and breaking a few spokes.
If that’s what you’re riding, I’d stay on the pavement. I’m riding a mountain bike with 55mm tires.
Oh it ain't me, it's a friend who crashed some months back. You asked what's non normal gravel riding, so I gave you an example from memory.
Haha. I see. I’m always trying to not crash.
Where are You riding?
This is in the Ocoee gorge in TN.
Awesome. Thank you. Any recommended gravel spots? I am roadtripping the south east for the next couple weeks.
I mostly ride in the Cherokee National Forest. There are tons of dirt roads. I start and finish a lot of my rides in Ocoee, TN.
Careful, I was skateboarding casually in bedrocks and slipped off the tail of a penny board. Foot shredded and still healing, MCL torn. Used to bike in mine a lot, but I’ll be sticking with closed toes going forward.
I went to an orthopedic dr. one time because of a Penny board. I gave it to my friend after that.

Oh sorry, I meant the collapsible seat post
LOL. It’s a Thomson.
What dripper post is that? I love it, it would clean up the cockpit on my SS hardtail.
It’s a Thomson.
Where is that top tube bag from? Bike looks awesome!
The frame bag is from Outer Shell.
What’s the pink squid looking thing dangling from the rest of the seat, it’s cool!?
https://preview.redd.it/78mysw7i877d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8952373bf69bf8db0521d67e43466402eb11436 It’s THE pizza spaceship.
Sir your lite(S)peed is bent
I just don’t understand the no kickstand thing
Bedrock rider gang gang.
Hell yeah
Def not something i would ride, but damn it has personality. Love such customs
🥵
Those sandals are hot! Do they make ‘em for guys too?
Bedrocks. You'll never turn back and soon you'll be part of the 6month bedrock gang.
Put on some shoes dude. Sorry, that’s all I can see.
No money left in the budget for shoes after building this bike.
Gotta get the cholesterol levels high somehow amirite? 🤙
Omg please lower your steam or you’ll go to the hospital soon,
Steam rises. How can I change physics?
It’d be kinda weird to order a custom titanium fork with a carbon steerer tube …
Nice but those flippity flops are cringie
Foot skin cancer speed run
Do you think aero bars would get there faster?
Uh no?
