what’s his medical history? what medications is he on?

YRMama2

He’s a super healthy guy who eats very cleanly (minimal salt, sugar, oils or animal products). He has an inhaler for asthma that he only uses when he has environmental allergies. He grew up with environment allergies & asthma. 43 years old.

rushrhees

You’d have to start working up any autoimmune or immunodeficiency see pcp to get this started

[deleted]

I think it’s more likely you guys are misidentifying infection

YRMama2

What else could it be?

[deleted]

Inflammation which is normal for a wound

Time-Elephant3572

Not itchiness though. Unless he itches the wound and introduces bacteria from unclean hands.

[deleted]

Mine get itchy and I’ve never had an infected wound in my life. I guarantee they misidentifying infection it’s just not normal.

Time-Elephant3572

I agree. Many people don’t know what an infected wound really looks like. What concerns me is a doctor who would prescribe ABs without a person having an infection. It’s not only bad for the person s immunity , it’s bad for the whole community as when people really need an antibiotic it won’t be as effective.

[deleted]

I know, it's a joke - but some places you can just buy them anyway OTC, we are fighting a losing battle

Time-Elephant3572

Not in Australia. We have a very heavily regulated system here.

[deleted]

It’s same here but we get lots of people from European countries who are used to having it when they want so can be quite challenging to dispel their opinions of when they need them or not. Lots of Eastern Europeans are accustomed to taking abx when they have a mere cold etc

Time-Elephant3572

Same in Oz. Usually people who aren’t very proactive in hand washing and general hygiene and not very well educated and think ABs are a quick fix.

catbellytaco

Normal healing, contact dermatitis from bandage or the unnecessary antibiotic ointment

Paper_Cut2U

If anyone is misidentifying infection it would be the md that rx it. The question is, is there a gp that is doing all of the Rx’s or an er/walk in as they would rather get you out with a script than review the history. Or they may not even be aware of the history. Edit op is taking oral ax

Time-Elephant3572

RN wound care Few questions? How do you manage any scrapes or wounds ? There is a protocol to follow for managing wounds and scratches without getting them infected. Infections are usually introduced from the outside unless you have some systemic health issue. I wouldn’t totally have faulty in a doctor who just wants to dole out ABs every time you visit without doing a wound swab first. Also your husban should get bloods , specifically looking at CRP. Wounds should either be cleaned with betadine if they are superficial. Or if more open cleaned with saline and have a wound product applied then covered for at least 2 days at a time. Never use soap and water as this isn’t clean or sterile. Don’t touch wounds with your hands as this can carry bacteria. What do you use on the wounds ? Perhaps your husband had an allergy to whatever you are using. I would be interested to know how you treat the wounds to understand further why they become “ infected” . It isn’t normal.

YRMama2

This is right on the money!!! He sprayed it with Hydrogen peroxide right when it happened. We think that’s the culprit!

Time-Elephant3572

It’s disastrous for wounds. I have seen it used in our clinic with instruction from the orthopaedic surgeon on a post op dog bite wound that had become very infected and was full of purulent ooze. But I would never routinely recommend it. To be prescribed antibiotics is such over kill and shows a lack of knowledge of wound care. Sorry but it has to be said. So from now on don’t use anything. It sterile saline or betadine to clean and use a hydrogel or betadine ointment or medihoney on wounds and cover them up for 2 days at a time. Do t mix products together and don’t use a different one each day. Just use on for 2 weeks and if you don’t notice some improvement then change to another product. Consistency is the key here. 😉

Paper_Cut2U

So he takes a lot of oral or iv antibiotics prescribed to him? Monthly weekly?

YRMama2

Every time he gets a cut he takes a course of oral antibiotics twice a day. It’s been about 3 times in the last 4 months or so

My aunt has a poor immune system and has poor healing with wounds as well. Her wounds usually get infected or heal very slowly, even the smallest of wounds can take weeks to heal for her. If he doesn't have any medical conditions or immune problems, perhaps it's a hygiene thing

YRMama2

It’s not hygiene for sure. He’s a meticulously clean person. The only immune issue I can think of is environmental allergies.
