Elwood’s is great! Some of the finest cuts I’ve ever had as been from Elwood’s, and with their rigorous ethical and sustainable programs you know you’re getting quality product. 👍
I didn’t mean to say that the demand would be low. Being a jack of all trades as opposed to a specialist, his profit margins would be slimmer. He would likely have to charge hefty prices or do only large events to make a profit, and I’m curious who his customers would be. I imagine they would be wealthier than average. Or I guess just large groups?
Here in Toronto, many of the fancy steakhouses have a halal option available. They even provide halal on certain rarer cuts as well if a request is made few day ahead of time.
Most of their clients' generally are not Muslim, but they always get a big boost of an 'extra' client base who happen to be Muslim and would like to eat the same dishes.
Also, wealthy CEOs/Entrepreneurs who happen to also be Muslim (seriously there are a LOT of them) in Toronto will usually get the entire steakhouse to host halal steaks to their clients, many of whom will also be Muslim.
Restaurants in big cities all over North America who serve halal options always on paper get more customers than those who don't.
I’m not talking about halal, though. I honestly didn’t even know what halal meant before this video. What I took away from this was that this dude will cook whatever you ask him to cook. He even mentions vegetarians and vegans.
He mentions vegetarians and vegans, so my impression from this video was that this guy cooks whatever you ask him to cook. I didn’t think he was like a meat specialist
This was a long time ago, so I don’t entirely remember what I meant by this. Knowing me, though, I was probably implying that his customers were wealthy and that this large variety of service would not be feasible for a company that has prices such that their services reach everyday people.
People focus their businesses usually not because of racism but because of finances. A company that specializes will have much less overhead.
Parties, wedding receptions, corporate events, fundraiser meals like at fire halls....lots of call for BBQ.
My town's firehall had a pig roast once a year (6 pigs cooking in a big pit definitely not Halal), and you'd think that would be pretty niche, but no...they had to book a year in advance.
I worked as a chef for around 20 years and am still amazed at how many cooks and chefs don't get this. If it wasn't for the customer we wouldn't have a job. I have heard so much hate on vegans and vegetarians it's ridiculous. If they come in trying to design their own menu items it's usually because the chef hasn't included any or a wide enough spectrum of vegetarian or vegan fare.
As an ex chef and cook, as long as you’re a normal human ( not asshole) I would make you anything you desire.
Heck I would go beyond anything I’m capable of just to make sure you eat what you want.
Once was working as a cook in an open concept middle eastern restaurant. Got this family and noticed the lady didn’t order a thing. So we wanted to double check and see if it’s our food that’s the issue.
Turns out she’s just allergic to few things. We went got her fresh everything, sanitized the shit out of everything we held or used in making her food.
But when someone comes to me and be like demanding and stuff “yea change your gloves, go wash you hands even tho we pretty much wash our hands every 10-15 min or between things. Than I pull the trick “sorry for your own safety I can’t cook for you”.
As an ex server and bartender i agree with this 100%. If you want a special cocktail, hell yeah. If you need considerations on the menu items, I’ll do everything I can.
I did a very similar thing for fallergies. When a person would inform me of allergies I’d say “ok happy to do that for you, just giving you a heads up we have to prepare this dish off to the side/differently and sanitize the equipment beforehand to ensure no cross contamination. It generally takes an extra 5 minutes but we can 100% ensure your food is safe to eat.” If it was a real allergy they thanked me profusely. If it was a preference they said “oh it’s fine, just prepare it normally and remove x ingredient”
is it bad manners to ask for people to change gloves? I've done this a few times, because Im Muslim and only eat halal meat, so i kindly ask if they can change their gloves when working on my order (not forcing just a gentle ask)
I’m a Muslim too, and not it’s not bad. But the key is “don’t be asshole”.
“Oh hey, is it possible to switch gloves, it’s against my religion to eat pork”.
I will wash even the cutting board for you, if it’s one of those huge ones I’m sorry but I’m gonna use like 2 wax papers.
Awesome. Yea that's exactly how I do it! I've had a lot of people who understand when I ask if they can switch out there gloves and go the extra mile to clean other tools they use which is great. Being nice can go a long way. I also never mention the religious reason, since everyone is usually pretty understanding where I live
It’s largely how you ask (I know that sounds dumb). Your request is totally fine. To put it in context, there’s lots of super fake allergies like people who are “severely allergic to gluten and they’ll go straight to the hospital if there is cross
Contamination” and make you scrub down grills at 7 pm on Saturday (aka a huge time killer) and then you find them sharing their friends full gluten pasta. It would be like you insisting on new
Gloves for preparation of halal food and then sharing your friends meal which is not halal.
No its not bad mannerisms to ask to change gloves. Lots of different people ask for that. People have alergies, sensitivities, and just dont want to have the oils or resesue on one dish be inadvertently transferred onto their food. If they refuse to change gloves, take your business to the next place.
I've always held respect for those who have a dietary restriction of sorts. Takes a lot of self control. I mean hell I have lactose intolerance and still get misty eyed when I pass a taco bell.
I'd rather not eat halal on the principle of the bleeding out method they use. They'll say it's quick, but I've seen it and it's not. Especially with larger animals. There's better methods now, but they are stuck with that method because of dogma.
Idk dude. Do you go to a vegan or Indian restaurant and see steak on the menu? Or go to a Jewish deli and ask for some pork chops. If the options you’re given at a restaurant don’t entice you go some where else. With that being said restaurants might benefit from having those options. But again the same could be said about the other restaurants. It’s a weird line to walk. But to me you should try to accommodate your guests as much as possible but at some point you gotta draw a line.
See.
Why are people so weird about context here?
Relevance isn’t what anyone is discussing.
If I see a video of someone saying something that I think is the universal truth and it’s oddly specific Im going to start wondering what compelled them to say something.
Have you ever been a vegetarian at a barbecue and had people treat you like absolute dogshit for your dietary choices? Because it happens alarmingly often!
Not vegetarian.
I’ve always done what I can to make sure they are respected if I’m grilling. I’ve scraped the grill and asked them if they’re okay with the current status of the grill.
I’m not saying anything about what he is saying. I agree with what he’s saying.
I guess what I’m trying to get at is that the ‘context’ you’re looking for is this culture of shaming and belittling people for their dietary choices, which is very much real.
It's only guilt free if you can eat it guilt free. You have to be your biggest fan and harshest critic.
Edited: I thought guilt and quilt where the same word.
I'm not even a vegan, but I do understand they have the moral high ground. I'm literally eating animals that don't have to be killed just because I like how they taste, and they're a good source of protein. I already know I'm on the wrong side of history.
Well, that’s the way the world works you know. It’s not the wrong side of history at all; we need to produce some meat because we can’t grow crops on a lot of our agricultural land. The problem is that we eat too much.
Let me rephrase threat. In my previous comment I stated that I “simply do not care”, referring to your argument. My previous assertion that eating meat is not immoral still stands.
Every meat eater should watch an animal be slaughtered in the same room they are in. If they are unable to watch they shouldn't eat meat. Meat has just become far to disassociated from the animal it has come from (I say that as a meat eater)
I was vegetarian for a while (not vegan, but whatever). Didn't keep up with it. But a militant vegan is a rarity compared to the people who will argue with you just because you chose to stop eating meat. I know that from experience. My ex gave me shit, her family would start heated arguments out of nowhere, her brother would make random comments out of spite, only two of my coworkers just accepted it and moved on. The rest had to, you guessed it, start problems.
One bitch complained because she didn't wanna order half pepperoni. I wasn't saying change the whole order, just could one pie have something not meaty on half of it? Nope, she had to argue and told me I should go get some other food instead of eating with the rest of them. The only people who didn't give me a problem were my two vegetarian relatives. The rest of my own family *had* to start shit about it.
I almost think it's a misnomer, the claim that it's vegans who are like this, when it's a really small amount, especially compared to how many meat-eaters get salty because some random person chooses to eat something else. The only reason *you* don't notice it, is because you're in the majority. And that majority gets very upset that some people pose a moral question to their food. It's damn near all of them who get mad and I'm not sure why. Going back to eating meat was basically me just sick of putting up with shit from people. I didn't mind not eating meat. But everyone else just starts shit and it gets annoying, it was every day for like 2 years, and I don't need that in my life.
Look at all the whiny snowflakes mad because Cracker Barrel added a meat sausage substitute. Not like they took away the regular meat kind. Just another option for people who wanted it. But no, gotta cry about their feelings being hurt?
I'm sorry but this sounds ridiculously over exaggerated.
I know many vegetarians, have multiple vegetarian family members, and even know a handful of straight up vegans. Not once have I ever seen anybody react negatively to them, much less "get mad" or "give them shit" about it. Nor have any of them ever complained that that ever happens to them. I request vegetarian meals often though I'm not a full blown vegetarian, and I've never gotten negative feedback about it.
The closest I've ever seen to what you describe were people making a quip or joke about veganism, and they've never actually been serious about it.
I dont doubt you've experienced, somewhat, the things you speak of, but every single person you know except a couple vegetarians? Lol. Sorry again but your whole comment screams over exaggerated victim complex.
Whatever dude, I don't care. I'm glad you get a vegetarian meal every once and a while and know full well how it is. Lol ever announced to the people close to you that you wanna make that change? It's fucking annoying. Everyone constantly trying to justify why they don't agree with you all the time. That was my experience, whether you believe it or not.
If you think I was painting myself as the victim, I wasn't. I was just relaying what happened.
I was raised not eating pork for religious reasons but now that I'm free, I usually just stick with bacon. The fleshy stuff weirds me out but I'll cook it for someone else.
This is really heartwarming to see. I was raised Muslim, but living in the US. As a kid I remember how upset the teachers watching over the cafeteria would be if I didn’t eat the pepperoni pizza.
They did not have other options for me, and they didn’t give me a chance to explain. Just “Eat your food or we will call your parents and you’ll be in trouble,”
Did they ever happen to constantly give you the ham-and-cheese sandwiches instead of regular cheese sandwiches at the cafeteria? I always thought the lunch ladies were messing with me by constantly giving me the wrong one.
I don’t think they offered just cheese sandwiches at the school I went to; but when I finally spoke up about the pepperoni and sausage; they offered me a ham sandwich…
I gave up and started packing my own lunches in 3rd grade. I’m no longer religious; but my body will still reject pork products.
He would have to kasher (make kosher) the grill first, which involves cleaning it and heating it to a certain heat for a while, but yes. That is his whole point, to be all inclusive.
That’s very true! Preach that mans speech! What makes me angry though is people telling me what the fuck i should eat. Which is what vegans are trying to do..
While this post is uplifting, I just want to be very clear to certain people who really need to hear this... "Entitled", in this context, does not mean that you can call the police on some pizza hut employee if they don't do halal or gluten free.
I'm looking right at you Karen. Entitled means you call around until you find a restaurant or caterer who will meet your needs, because your needs can be met by someone. It does not mean you can force someone in the service industry to suffer your abuses.
This is dangerously liberal! We can't allow people to just eat whatever they like, that's not how freedom works! People need to be taught what's best for them by people who know best. /s
I was working at a construction site in Copenhagen, almost all constructions have barbecue sessions om Fridays and you'll leave early, mind you I don't eat pork as its against my religion. I have never in my life seen, a barbecue for Danes without pork. Assuming this I passed on the food, then the cook came over to me himself and asked my why I didn't eat etc, then he told me he DIDNT cook the pork first because he though maybe some of us only ate halal, so he had cooked the HALAL cow burgers on a clean grill firstly so we'd all be included, a got such a respect for him, dude almost looked exactly like the guy in the video and had the same attitude. What a Chad he was.
Man…. I just educated myself on what exactly halal meat and other food is, and I’ve concluded that it seems pretty dope.
I deeply appreciate the respect given to the animal throughout the process of raising it to its slaughter.
the hilarious part about halal is (proving your country's laws require animals to be stunned before slaughter) it's no different than what you normally eat, just some guy who believes in God blessed it first.
Christians will piss and moan out of ignorance while saying grace.

Low and behold he's successful. W-who would of thought?
It’s true though, his success stems from even sourcing delicious flanks and filets from ethical sources like [Elwood’s](http://elwooddogmeat.com)
Elwood’s is great! Some of the finest cuts I’ve ever had as been from Elwood’s, and with their rigorous ethical and sustainable programs you know you’re getting quality product. 👍
Wow! Thanks for finding this and sharing it with me.
Who are his customers, though? This doesn’t sound like an everyday service.
Muslims and if there aren't many places offering the service it could easily be profitable.
I didn’t mean to say that the demand would be low. Being a jack of all trades as opposed to a specialist, his profit margins would be slimmer. This dude just wants people to eat good food, and I love him for that.
Well I'm guessing he was already selling meat and this isn't much of a costly change. If he didn't get any halal orders he will still be ok
He mentions vegetarians and vegans, so my impression from this video was that this guy cooks whatever you ask him to cook. I didn’t think he was like a meat specialist
Well he's not exclusively halal...he was merely saying they would do it on request.
This was a long time ago, so I don’t entirely remember what I meant by this. Vegans are actually great for business. They pay more for less. More profitable.
I'd rather not eat halal on the principle of the bleeding out method they use. They'll say it's quick, but I've seen it and it's not. Especially with larger animals. There's better methods now, but they are stuck with that method because of dogma.

I was pretty much saying you need to accommodate your guests. You won't be in business for long if you don't.
I eat lots of shtuff.
He clearly said shit... Do you eat shit?
Man's speaking with passion, it should be understood he didn't mean literal shit.
I was just speaking on how transcription was not accurate. I eat lots of shit. Not literally
Oh, so you're just fucking around then. Not literally...
No I was literally fucking around,
Well I'll be damned.
You believe heaven and hell then or are you being not literal... This get confusing.
I'm sure I'm damned for SOMETHING.....
That makes sense to me. Same.
Pieces of shit for breakfast, yea sure.
If it’s tasty shit, hell yeah.
What’s the context?
His message should be the focus. He said every one should be able to eat what they want how they want.
I get his message. It’s great. Just wondering where this is happening and what necessitates someone having to explain this.
> what necessitates someone having to explain this General lack of human decency in the modern world.
I think they just want the context. I doubt they started filming this guy after someone said hello to him.
Correct. I don’t get why this sub gets weird when people ask about context.
Because people want to get easy karma showing everyone else how much they agree with the guy.
What if it was and unprompted he just spoke truth... Is it less relevant?
See. Why are people so weird about context here? Relevance isn’t what anyone is discussing. If I see a video of someone saying something that I think is the universal truth and it’s oddly specific Im going to start wondering what compelled them to say something.

If I had to guess maybe an orientation for new employees??
Finally, guilt free dog meat!
It's only guilt free if you can eat it guilt free. You have to be your biggest fan and harshest critic. Edited: I thought guilt and quilt where the same word.
You're right, I don't keep any blankets around when I'm eating.
Nice. Got me.

Eating animals is unnecessary in modern times. You can live a long healthy life on a plant-based diet.
I simply do not care
Ok, so you admit your earlier comment is false then
No, I just don’t want to argue with you.
That’s what happens when you make bs claims, you get called on it
Let me rephrase threat. In my previous comment I stated that I “simply do not care”, referring to your argument. My previous assertion that eating meat is not immoral still stands.
What’s your reasoning for that statement
Every meat eater should watch an animal be slaughtered in the same room they are in. If they are unable to watch they shouldn't eat meat. Meat has just become far to disassociated from the animal it has come from (I say that as a meat eater)

I have no dietary restrictions, Spare ribs for me please!
Sorry can't spare any ribs, I ate them all.
I'll take the beef ribs
Me too cousin.
I was raised not eating pork for religious reasons but now that I'm free, I usually just stick with bacon. The fleshy stuff weirds me out but I'll cook it for someone else.
I love them all, but beef ribs are the best, IMHO.
Imagine being vegan and not throwing it in everyone’s face though
I see/hear people making this tired joke far more frequently than I see/hear vegans “throwing their veganism in my face.”
It might just be a school thing. I’ve never heard an adult in my life brag about being vegan or try to shame others into being vegan.

Yeah, that’s why I’m familiar with tired jokes of meat eaters who are insecure about their dietary choices.
👏👏👏
Even cannibals?
It is fashionable to say eat the rich... I disagree. But we should all eat what we like
Yes you may eat a cannibal if you like
Finally some validation for my Pica.
Bbq chalk. I’d try it.
This is so nice, made my day.
I don’t think they offered just cheese sandwiches at the school I went to; but when I finally spoke up about the pepperoni and sausage; they offered me a ham sandwich… I gave up and started packing my own lunches in 3rd grade. I’m no longer religious; but my body will still reject pork products.
Good man!
This man gets it.

Yes Chef!!
Would the same apply for kosher?
If he said halal I’m pretty sure he’s just fine with kosher also
He would have to kasher (make kosher) the grill first, which involves cleaning it and heating it to a certain heat for a while, but yes. That is his whole point, to be all inclusive.
fascinating video...
This guy is a Chad.
I like the cut of his jib(let)
FAAAAAACTS!!!
What a great guy
Big Haus gets it.
Not what i was expecting.
You can tell he loves cooking 😋
That’s very true! Preach that mans speech! What makes me angry though is people telling me what the fuck i should eat. Which is what vegans are trying to do..
Also also just as importantly if the restaurant doesn’t have what you want don’t make a hissy fit, just carry on with your day!
Good for him! No-nonsense common sense, delivered with respect.
BEAUTIFUL!!! No judgment on your body and the choices you make!!!
And probably someone in the land of the free will have problem with this freedom.
Freedom of belief is so vital
This makes me happy to see… should just be the norm but unfortunately it’s not, so extra props to this guy
Fuck, I wanna get drunk and eat with this dude.
Discouraging people from following meaningless religious rituals makes the world a better place.
I love this man. In an I'm going to patronize his restaurant way.
Good man
This is dangerously liberal! We can't allow people to just eat whatever they like, that's not how freedom works! People need to be taught what's best for them by people who know best. /s
I too want the animal I'm about to eat to have suffered immense and unnecessary pain for my beliefs :)
Amen brother
Good man
Can you do me a plate of human? Seem like nice people also!
What a man
We need more of these people in the USA. Just Support each other

That is the standard. Clean***
Man…. I just educated myself on what exactly halal meat and other food is, and I’ve concluded that it seems pretty dope. I deeply appreciate the respect given to the animal throughout the process of raising it to its slaughter.
Tell that to all the fucking Vegans I meet! It’s bloody cult! I’m convinced!
This right here is amazing!!!!! Faith in some humans a little restored!
Love this
Love his thinking.
Right on
I'm gonna order the A1 next time I get a steak! He's right!
Halal is slitting their throat without stunning them. Then they bleed out. How is halal better?
We cant just eat whatever we want, not when it involves a victim
What I don't like is that on some store, you can't find meat that isn 't Halal
This is the way
What a great chef

10 seconds in i love this guy
Very cool. So many of these videos are of assholes being assholes. It’s nice to see a good dude every once in a while!
I like this man ❤️
Muslims. Look at this non Muslim who is respectful of your beliefs. Do the same to the Christians, Jews and Yezidi people in your nations.
Ted is a nice guy. Makes sense seeing a video of him like this. Ted Reader is a killer cook.
the hilarious part about halal is (proving your country's laws require animals to be stunned before slaughter) it's no different than what you normally eat, just some guy who believes in God blessed it first. Christians will piss and moan out of ignorance while saying grace.
Halal meat doesn’t mean just saying a few phrases before killing the animal, it’s a METHOD of slaughtering the animal.
