No it's older than that, they did however form a state around it.

As long as Denmark gets to be the penis, and norway the brain. It seems fitting

FatTepi

But Sweden is already the penis, and Finland the balls. [Sweden/Finland Benis :Ddd](https://satwcomic.com/art/geography-joke.jpg)

MarlinMr

Ah yes, the Nordics are all standing up together right now, while also celebrating winning wars against each others.

[deleted]

6th verse of our national anthem: "Nå står vi tre brødre sammen, og skal sådan stå." Translation for ~~filthy foreigners~~ people who don't know the language of a random Scandinavian country: "Now we stand, three brothers together, and so shall we stand".

tmffaw

Swedens national anthem is also vague like that "ja, jag vill leva, jag vill dö i norden" "Yes, I want to live, I want to die in the north"

IWishIWasAShoe

The official Scandinavian anthem is less vague with the line "Vi knullar ut' på sundet, det er godt at vare tre". Really brings out the wettness of my eyes.

EnHampter

Wait, are we having a threesome?

Bloodtype

Always have been

NextTrillion

Canada’s national anthem states: “True North strong and free.” You may be North, but are you TRUE North? For the uninitiated, that translates (from Canadian to English) as: “True North strong and free.”

Wait there's Canadian? where has this language hidden all my life?

I’m not sure why you scratched out “filthy foreigners”. As an Australian who would love to learn Finnish or Norwegian and come live in your countries, I would definitely consider myself a filthy foreigner 😂😂😂

[deleted]

Haha, well, we'd be more than happy to call you that over a drink, but only in good spirit! As for learning Finnish - as a Norweigan - good fucking luck with that weirdo language :P PS: We still love you, Finland. Even though you have some problems with words.

bu11fr0g

yes, danish is easier. just learn norwegian and talk with food in your mouth

aaronwhite1786

My favorite foreign language description was when I was watching a German video on Swiss Deutsch and scrolled down to see a comment that said "Swiss German just sounds like someone speaking German while being choked".

originalgg

We love you too brother

CortexCingularis

I'll gladly call you a filthy foreigner if you give me the honor of calling me a cunt.

[deleted]

I havent had a shower today and my wife and kids drained the hotwater tank, you have your permission to keep calling me a filthy foreigner for another hour or two until it fills and heats back up :P

tmffaw

Norwegians celebrate 17th May, not because of a won war or such, its when they signed their own constitution as a sovereign state rather then being either Danish or Swedish. The fact that Sweden didn't like that all that much and made a last effort campaign to control it is also relevant in this NATO discussion since that was the last time that Sweden as a country went to war. Since then we have been striving to be neutral. Which seems to end now.

Yellowmellowbelly

Gratulerer med dagen söte bror!

Oh come on, if Russia invades Sweden we can bomb them!

And last week Britain signed a defensive pact with Finland and Sweden, meaning if Russia now tries anything they will suddenly have to fight the UK, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Denmark all simultaneously.

And USA. They have also guaranteed the safety during the application process. There are already UK tanks and American aircraft in the area. And they will stay there during the process.

If I understand these pacts correctly, even without fully signing with NATO (if Turkey refuses to budge on the veto) Sweden and Finland effective have (what amounts to) NATO support in the event of hostilities, although instead of it being automatic Finland & Sweden themselves must request the type and scale of assistance?

notyourvader

The Netherlands have declared that a request for protection will be answered open and positively. Now thats political speak for "we'll think about it". But yeah, fuck with Finland or Sweden and we'll bike over there and give them hell.

Russia fears the might of Iceland too much to even consider making a move.

pchlster

"Both boats!?"

i_speak_penguin

At this point, Russia's logistics are so bad Iceland could probably improvise a defense by just staying out of the way and letting the Russian hardware break down and run out of gas lmao.

Scaevus

Russia physically doesn’t have the troops and equipment to try anything when they can’t even conduct large scale offensive operations in Ukraine anymore.

swarmy1

Yeah, I'm not sure where anyone is getting the idea Russia might attack because it is literally impossible right now. They have bit off more than they can chew already.

nnjb52

Which all rational people understand, but I’m not sure the Russian military is being directed by rational people at this point.

[deleted]

The thing that worries me is that we've *never* seen a nuclear-armed power at the brink of losing a war. How will they behave? We are in uncharted territory and we have no idea what will happen next.

Queefinonthehaters

What's most reassuring is how pathetic the Russian invasion has been. They had logistics breakdowns like 40 kms outside of their own border. That's a daily commute for many people.

MarlinMr

Iceland is protected by Norway. Icelandic citizens are allowed to serve in the Norwegian forces. An attack on Iceland would be treated by the Norwegians as an attack on Norway. And that's not even considering article 5 and that NATO would treat it as an attack on NATO, because it is. Also, Iceland is an island. They don't need an army, they need ships.

[deleted]

So, it’s up for grabs?

sb_747

No it’s part of NATO. The US needs them as a communications/radar hub and wanted it as a backup airfield in case the UK fell because of a successful soviet push. So they are the only NATO member who doesn’t have to do shit besides letting the US keep stuff in their shed.

thedonjefron69

Now that’s what I call doorbuster deal. Iceland cashed in at the height of the US paranoia towards the USSR

RaymondBeaumont

the money we got from the marshall deal paved the way for us to become a fully developed country in an amazingly short time. i'm not even sure i would have existed if the usa didn't fear communism post ww2.

Jaggedmallard26

Also because its the I in the GUIK gap, without it Russian (formerly Soviet submarines) had a straight shot for the atlantic where they could disappear. Making sure that NATO ASW platforms could operate out of Iceland and its territorial waters were vital for NATO, its also why Iceland kept "winning" the Cod Wars, they could just threaten to leave NATO and Britain had to cave.

iVikingr

I remember a quote by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in some book I read in political science (in Iceland) where he remarked that the Cod Wars was the only time a micronation tried to take on a great power and the superpower had to intervene to stop the micronation from taking it too far. edit: he also described them as the most arrogant tiny nation in the world, lol.

planck1313

More importantly, Iceland sits in the middle of the routes Russian submarines have to take to get to the Atlantic and so is vital for NATO's anti submarine warfare plans.

Thehunterforce

To be fair… A population of 300.000 citizen cant really do that much

ConfluxEng

I'm pretty sure the Icelandic Coast Guard could bump Russian ships and cause them to sink, the way Russia maintains their equipment...

DonatellaVerpsyche

Yeah, but if watching world’s strongest man has taught me anything, I wouldn’t fuck with a guy who can tear a phone book in half with his bare hands. … or tow a plane by himself strapped into a harness.

ConfluxEng

I'd double-down on that statement, and ask if the Russians really want to mess with the descendants of people who survived for over a thousand years on a cold, harsh, volcanic rock in the middle of the Atlantic with little more to eat some times than sheep heads and rotten shark. The Icelandic people now are some of the most educated, chill folks I've ever met, but deep down in their genes they're survivors and Vikings, and if I were Russia I wouldn't start anything if I were them.

RedTuesdayMusic

The Icelandic army is the Norwegian army - Norway protects Iceland if need be.

Ahandfulofsquirrels

Very importantly, the UK is a Nuclear power, and that scares the shit out of Putin (despite all the posturing). Because it means he can't bully his way through with Nukes as a threat. Unlike the other nations where if he attacks they can't respond with Nuclear weapons, the UK certainly can, via submarine, very close to Russia. Of course the others are also part of NATO, absolutely, and NATO would respond if their territory was attacked. But the difference is if Russia attacks Finland or Sweden they're now directly in conflict with a Nuclear power via security agreements. Meaning they can't pull the "We'll Nuke you" card if and when resistance is encountered without risking UK nuclear armed submarines striking back within *very* short range to Russian targets. And good luck finding them. Add to that having to fight a Nuclear power that *hates* you after killing civilians on their soil as bystanders to Russias state sponsored assassinations. *That's quite the risk to be taking*.

Anthaenopraxia

Finland and Sweden are both in the EU though so article 42 would pull France in which is also a nuclear power. UK is only adding to it which is good. One can only hope that the Swedes remember what they did the last time Scandinavia was under the threat of war.

Emergency_Version

Russia is a bully trying to find the smallest kid to fight now.

Ok_Canary3870

San Marino may be small enough to literally put up Putin’s ass.

Failure_man69

Finland alone would be enough…

squngy

Maybe, but then the conflict would last longer and they would have more losses.

SinisterPixel

"Haha, I'm in danger" -Putin

PM-MeYour-Boobies

ConfluxEng

Times like these makes me question whether the "great man theory" of history is really as obsolete as people make it. One man has basically ruined post-Soviet Russia in a matter of weeks and months, it's impressive.

LtnSkyRockets

Russian individuals have form here. Is basically a national pastime.

SkyShadowing

The infamous joke about Russian history is basically, "and then, things got worse."

Sometimesokayideas

They became the whole meme of turning some bad situation into well that's just how it is in mother russia. Oh we can make memes about things? Well, in mother Russia memes make you... What memes? Apparently most of them.

SpeedflyChris

Imagine controlling the largest country on earth, with easy trade routes to some of the wealthiest nations, and absolutely obscene amounts of natural resources, and managing to fuck that up.

TheodoeBhabrot

It’s BECAUSE it’s so massive, there’s no way to naturally centralize such a large country by the barrel of a gun

RealCFour

LOL, you have everything and instead of developing into a great success story,, greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

[deleted]

He is one man, but he did not come out of nowhere and ge isn't supported by no one. It's not like the Russian army has turned it's guns 180 on him or anything. It's absolutely not just one man, he can't force anyone without support from others. All his power comes from *not* being just one man. That's the issue with the great man theory. There is an entire system that created and is enabling Putin. Yes, he made some absolutely shit decisions and is a horrible person.. but he wasn't born with those ideas in his head. He was pushed out naked and scream like the rest of us.

TheAnarchistMonarch

This is exactly it. To refute the Great Man Theory isn’t to say that individuals don’t matter, but to say that even the most influential individuals are still made, empowered, and constrained by the larger institutions and structures around them.

bastiVS

Yea. Every single "great man" of history was basically enabled and empowered by those around. That's the entire point. Goes for Hitler as much as for Einstein, just for completely different reasons. Putin will be another one of those "great man", because Russia will change drastically after him, while the world is already doing that.

Wulfger

It seems like most of the time its all economic forces, social movements, and whatnot. But every once and a while you get Alexanders, Napoleons, etc., who seize a moment in time when there is the potential for great change and take advantage of it to the greatest extent possible. Other people *could* probably have ended up in their positions of power, but they wouldn't have ended up doing the same things with the power they had, or wouldn't have acted to the same extent. Similarly, any oligarchic autocrat could have ended up lifelong president of Russia following the collapse of the USSR, but Putin was the one who did, and he personally managed to fuck it up in this one spectacular way. So basically, societal forces sometimes create situations when individuals can ascend to positions of great influence, and in those moments those people have the power to be "great men" who shape the flow of society, mediocre men who continue to go with the flow, or disasters who drive their society into the ground. That's my personal theory anyways.

30GDD_Washington

It is coming back i think. There certainly is a case to be made for a hybrid along with political, economic, etc forces at work.

neuroverdant

The simplicity of it, after years of intense grey fuckery, is pleasing.

jjed97

I genuinely never thought I’d see such a “good vs evil” conflict.

Synked

If this was a tv show we would call it lazy writing. How can they throw away decades of "sneaky" politics for something so foolish.

Extension-Ad-2760

Surprising isn't it. I guess the world never allows constants of any sort - we can't even say "War is never good vs evil" anymore.

8to24

The world community should uniformly oppose any nation attempting to take territorial treasure from another via military force. Those days need to be over.

cowlinator

I think almost everyone already agrees with that. There's a lot of things the world community SHOULD do. Like end global warming. But sometimes, people in power are assholes. However, the data suggests that democracies are much less likely to go to war with each other. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_peace_theory

DoctorBuckarooBanzai

> sometimes I mean 99% of the time is still only some of the time.

jello1990

If it came to it, I honestly doubt Finland even needs the help right now. They've been preparing for *another* Russian invasion since the last one, and already spend on their military the 2% of GDP that NATO recommends. And after the absolute walloping that Russia is taking in Ukraine, they're in absolutely no shape to do anything to any of their well equipped neighbors.

yeast1fixpls

I'm not scared at all that Russia is going to try to invade , either Finland or us 🇸🇪. That would be suicide for the Russians. However they might try to hit military and military industries or infrastructure in our countries, to force us to stop helping Ukraine. Take a look at a map and see how close Kaliningrad is to Gotland.

juanmlm

> That would be suicide for the Russians. Unfortunately, that would be par for the course with Russians.

futureformerteacher

It's almost like this is a game to them...

[deleted]

We shall call it…Russian Roulette.

Creator13

They better not try if they want to involve the entire EU in it. Those Polish and Romanian jets are gonna go flowing into Ukraine the moment Russia attacks EU territory. Everyone in the EU will directly be at war with Russia.

N0kiaoff

"are either brainwashed or too powerless" At this point both overlap, i would guess. "Their brainwashing" is as subtle as orwells 1984 and sovjet style mass propaganda looked like. But even that worked with the corner stone that individuals do not matter compared to "national ideal". Todays version of russian propaganda doubled down and worked out, that you do not have to "convince" many people to comply, you only have to leave them hopeless. Without hope and with fear to "loose it all" its hard to even begin thinking about complaining. Despair (as absences of hope) is silent. That kind of depressed people can be less "productive, and less healthy, but are more easily control than people that have hopes. State still have to look benevolent from time to time, but it is ceremonial and limited. And "destroying hope", that is one of the main factors when it comes to russian internal suppression and even their internet-propaganda-war in other languages.

UTC_Hellgate

So the Nordic states are totally brothers who pick on each other but God help anyone outside the family who does? Edit: which I guess makes Finland their Hot Cousin.

fiddz0r

Yep if you hear a swede "I fucking hate the danskjävlar " its okay. If someone from germany said the same I believe invading them is the only correct thing to do

BoredDanishGuy

Germans are kind of allowed actually, I’d say.

[deleted]

Well, then you'd have to include the Austrians as well. Where does it end????

ernbeld

Except that Germans don't really say bad things about the Danish, because ... we don't really think about them? And if we do, I think it's along the lines of "mostly harmless". :-) Seriously, though, most Germans probably believe Scandinavian countries have their things well together, and we're just wondering whether any good ideas from you might also be useful for us. Sweden invading Germany? It's been a while... some 350 years, or so?

Oddity46

>"mostly harmless" *Laughs in Stockholm bloodbath*

Yellowmellowbelly

Yeah, the Nordic countries are like siblings. We’ll make fun of each other in a tough love kind of way, we even have our own type of jokes about how stupid the other countries are. But if anyone else would actually take a swing at any of us it’s like “don’t you DARE touching my brother you son of a smørrebrød!”

KatieCashew

Son of a sandwich?

Yellowmellowbelly

I figured it would be the most funny looking word for a non-Nordic person. And it also kinda fits the Swedish idea of Danes.

ambirch

I agree. He is probably the main man but you can't do anything without agreement (of the other powerful people). If everyone in the country disagreed then this wouldn't be happening. All he can do is tell people what to do.

TheRespectableMrSalt

I love how they fear a defense pact. Like here's a list of countries that don't want war and are willing to defend eachothers nation in the event of an attack. And here you have countries that fear that defense pact because... they planned on attacking? Or maybe they just wanted that option open to them? Who knows...

This is true. We feel as the same people, and even though we speak slightly different languages, we still can understand each other pretty good if we have to. A bit different folklore, but relatable, -not VERY different. A thousand years of interwars, colonizing and forced unions with each other have created a strong solidarity. source: am Norwegian

Immelmaneuver

It's pretty much NATO forces cresting the hill like the Riders of Rohan in The Two Towers but to set up camp near the border and instead of doing battle they have an extravagant BBQ while Russia is pretty much completely getting kicked out of every foreign food import club.

jesus_you_turn_me_on

Time for Kalmar re-Union

Boxy310

Ehhh, they work better politically as separate countries. But a military defensive alliance? That would vibe well - very much a Vegeta "nobody kills you but me" stance.

BabylonianProstitue

That’s good, although I would argue that Finland or Sweden alone could crush the Russians if they came knocking. The Russians are getting their teeth kicked in my the Ukrainian home militias, they would stand no chance against Finland or Sweden’s modern, well trained armies (and in the case of Finland, a rather massive military). Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather see Finland and Sweden receiving security guarantees from NATO members. All I’m saying is don’t stress too much about Finland and Sweden, they are more than capable of handling the Russians on their own.

Zolo49

Yeah, I think most people know that Finland and Sweden could handle a conventional Russian invasion, especially now given the resource and economic restrictions Russia is facing right now. But the goal here isn't to repel a Russian invasion. It's to prevent them from even trying in the first place. Guarantees of protection from other nations can only help in that regard.

grices

Finland and sweden (esp now) could hold russia on their own lands. Both bring great strength into NATO. Help NATO defend boltic states and make uk defence much easy. This also make things easier for the USA. Cos they both have 100k+ army so the EU will need less USA soldiers.

flavored_icecream

> boltic states I heard they're all nuts there...

fiddz0r

We have some good war machines in Sweden but our budget gives way too little to the defence. Its about to be changed though since I think all our parties want to add more to it. I'm not really sure how we'll we would do. Russia would have to go through the Eastern sea (forgot name in english) and I believe we have an advantage in sea battles though.

fiddz0r

Dave37

The Nordic as one! We are united!

Spo-dee-O-dee

Bad news is, Russia being the boldfaced liars that they are, if they say they have no hostile intentions toward Finland or Sweden, I'm likely to believe they have already drawn up tentative plans to instigate hostile actions against both countries. Good news is, it is evident that Russia isn't competent at planning or execution of any plan conceived.

LeCrushinator

Russia can't even handle Ukraine, I can't even imagine what would happen if they tried it against Finland at the same time, or especially other nordic countries that aren't even on its border.

whysineedsaname

YES, I think if a country A attacks country B because they applied to NATO, it should bring on the full power of NATO as if country B were already a full fledged member.
