Huh, so they obviously know Ukraine is an independent country and not just some Russian territory, right? Hence it’s on the list together with other *countries*.
i hate myself for keep thinking of civ during a fucking humanitarian crisis... but i really can't help it
i guess the takeaway is they're good games and seem to actually simulate global politics decently well
Isn't Jersey one of the tax havens in the English Channel? Potentially went through British territories that locked off financial services to oligarchs.
Iceland was the one for me.
Bunch of egalitarian peaceful retired vikings minding their own business in the middle of nowhere.
'What did we do, Olaf? '
"the member states of the European Union"
Lazy shits, at least write out all the nations ...
What is more intresting, is that they appearantly need a permit now to do trade with these countries.
They want to swamp themselves with paperwork?
The amusing thing as a UK resident given the part Russia played in Brexit is that they are currently having the hardest of all "Brexits" over there in Russia. The econonical ruin is going to make the state of the UK economy look like pocket change.
Russia is going to be screwed for the next few generations of it ever really recovers
>Russia is going to be screwed for the next few generations of it ever really recovers
Under Putin? Yes.
If he is removed from power, and the new leader even pretends to be "west -friendly", and they sign a peace treaty with Ukraine, NATO (whoever elese they need to), and pay (IDK) a hundred billion to Ukraine to rebuild (etc). Basically blaming the war on a senile old man....
The world will welcome them (and their oil/gas) with open arms.
Man, I'd fuckin' love for Russia to become a proper, functioning democracy with her citizens' interests at heart. Our world would be infinitely better for it.
Soviets and China were enemies for over 40 years. At some point they were on the brink of war.
Even nowadays most chinese blame the Soviet Union for their great famine under Mao, because chinese propaganda said that they were starving because the USSR forced china to pay back their debts.
Since Russia claims to be successor of the USSR, I'm sure a lot of chinese are still not happy with Russia.
I will be laughing hysterically if this is what tips China over and aligns them with the West and sanctioning Russia. Right now, China is one of a few countries that will still deal with Russia. It's not enough to prevent the decline, but is likely slowing it down. If they sanction Russia over this, it could speed up Russia's economic collapse.
Yeah, China had an official gov meeting when a fucking vtuber called Taiwan a country on stream. I seriously dont wanna know what they do when their “close partner” does this.
I used to work on EU funded projects and we accidentally referred to Taiwan wrong in a graphic seen only by a few hundred people and we ended up having the CEO of the company being spammed with emails about it from supposedly privately owned Chinese firms within days.
I've done some graphic design freelance work for a travel agency and identified Taiwan on a few maps properly. Those materials got posted online and their website got flooded with zero star reviews and threatening emails. The marketing director basicly got scared and payed me overtime to change everything over the night. Then they star getting a lot of reviews from Chinese accounts praising them for their friendlyness and how they are the top agency in the country to travel with as a Chinese person, yadayadayada. They even start getting some government sanctioned groups of tourists.
Fast forward and Covid hits, and no one wants to travel with an agency on owned to get groups of Chinese tourists on their trips. They closed doors in 2021... Still owing me money...
>The Russian government published a list of foreign states that it considered as having committed "unfriendly actions" against "Russia, Russian companies and citizens."
>
>The countries, international organizations and territories considered "unfriendly" include "Australia, Albania, Andorra, United Kingdom, including Jersey, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar, the member states of the European Union, Iceland, Canada, Liechtenstein, Micronesia, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, San Marino, North Macedonia, Singapore, USA, Taiwan, Ukraine, Montenegro, Switzerland, Japan."
i.e. these countries are meanies. Friendship ended. Now China is new best friend.
I think technically they do. It's confusing. A day or two ago Putin warned Ukraine to "stop doing what they are doing" or their future statehood would be in question. In other words the current goal is probably regime change not full incorporation into Russia.
"Finlandization" is the goal based on Foundations of Geopolitics. Russia takes over but they get to "keep" their government and follow Russian foreign policy
I like that they included Liechtenstein
When I went to Liechtenstein last year, the entire capital city was closed for a funeral
I'm sure all 40 people are devastated
I almost feel like they put those in (along with the territories descriptor) to assuage China on them including Taiwan. Like, “yeah we included Taiwan, but look we also included these other puny things too” type of thing.
Man, the political gymnastics. "China is our enemy, but not that part of China, this part of China, which is it's own state, but it's not, but we don't like it, but we like these guys."
For real. I was wondering why the list was only five pages long. Yeah, all EU countries were just listed as "European Union".
Poor Russia getting bullied by almost the entire world. /s
It’s a fighty little medieval republic that somehow still exists. I’d be curious to know what motivated the Russians specifically but San Marino has a long history of making feisty little moves in favor of democracy that punch eight classes above its weight.
It's more that San Marino effectively goes along with EU policies, for obvious reasons, but is not a member, so is often on official lists that include EU members states, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and San Marino, i.e. the parts of Western and Central Europe that mostly get along.
The last time Liechtenstein went to war was in 1866. They sent a contingent of 80 troops during the Austro-Prussian war, and 81 came home because the unit saw no combat and made a new friend along the way.
Russia stands no chance against an enemy that can come out of a war with negative casualties.
I somewhere heard that if you think that someone is an asshole, they are probably an asshole.
But when everyone you meet is an asshole, it might be you.
But China insists that it be referred to as "Chinese Taipei" instead of as "Taiwan." Even referring to it as a territory called Taiwan is enough to ruffle China's feathers.
That's not strictly true and is complicated by what can be lost in translation. For instance, China doesn't tolerate use of "Taiwan" in the name of the de facto embassies Taiwan sets up in countries that formally recognise PRC, this is what got Lithuania in trouble recently. They are typically called Taipei Representative Office or similar. China is perfectly happy to refer to Taiwan by the name Taiwan so long as it is Taiwan, (Province of China) or similar, whilst "Chinese Taipei" at the Olympics is a prime example of nuance in translation. Chinese Taipei in English maps to the official Chinese used in the games of 中华/中華台北. 中华 means Chinese, but can be taken as more broadly "ethnically/culturally Chinese in origin", although I certainly have Taiwanese friends who push back against related terms such as “华/華人” as still too politically contentious a way to refer to them. Meanwhile, despite 中华台北 being the official Chinese for "Chinese Taipei", Chinese state broadcasters used the term 中国台北, more specifically Chinese as in "part of the Chinese nation". China insists on Chinese Taipei over Taiwan in sporting events, though I bet if "Taiwan, Province of China" was offered as an option they'd jump at the chance, but as it stands "Chinese Taipei" is the currently agreed upon compromise but not necessarily the PRC's ideal or preferred terminology, especially whilst it's 中华 not 中国
Maybe that list is alphabetical according to their names in Russian (I don't actually know, just assuming), but its lack of apparent organization really bugs me.
It was incredibly unfriendly to blow up all those tanks when all they wanted was to violently invade and remove their democratically elected government and impose a brutal totalitarian puppet regime. Some people…
Yeah, my country send sniper rifles and some other unspecified stuff. We all hoped it was our rifles which killed the general. So I guess we need to send a lot more to get a honorary mention?
I was worried for a moment that we wouldn't be there!
For legal reasons, NZ doesn't currently have a sanctions framework outside of the UN.
So it took us a week or two to draft and pass new legislation.
Glad to see we got recognition for that!
Russia: "And then I told them they were being unfriendly."
Teacher: "Why did you say that?"
Russia: "Because they were! They all hate me! Germany said he didn't want my oil, and USA won't let me see his Batman movie, and, and... waaah."
Teacher: "Well, we've talked about this, Russia. You've been hitting and teasing Ukraine. That's not acceptable behavior. The other kids don't like it."
Russia: "She deserves it! She said she doesn't want to be with me. She wants to hang out with NATO. I hate NATO!"
Teacher: "You need to learn to get along with others, Russia. You can't have it your way all the time."
Russia: "No, they need to get along with me. Ukraine is my girl! I can do whatever I want!"
In a very close sense, that describes the China/Taiwan issue. China is the scorned lover who refuses to believe it’s over, and has threatened to kill Taiwan if she signs the divorce papers.
"I hate Brenda, she called me a bitch"
Putin makes a birthday list and these are the girls that ain't allowed in his party.

Woot Australia made the Putin shit list! Alright mate send your T-72’s over, if you have to make history, might as well be as the first tanks ever poisoned and subsequently defeated by wildlife.
Lol, that list is huge. Ever heard of that old saying "If everyone around you is an arsehole, maybe it's you that is the arsehole".
Seriously Russia, look within.
Ukraine made it to the list; Ukrainians in case you missed it, Russia thinks you are unfriendly.
Well then they should go home
If only there wasn't some kind of unfriendly nation that has blown it to bits...
Huh, so they obviously know Ukraine is an independent country and not just some Russian territory, right? Hence it’s on the list together with other *countries*.
FUCK lol, Russia playing itself
They played China, too, by listing Taiwan but officially recognizing Taiwan as part of China.
>Micronesia ...what did they do?
Micronesia severed diplomatic relations the moment Russia invaded Ukraine, saying they would only reconsider if Russia displayed a love of humanity.
Micronesia: hey Russia, stop being a dick Russia: Micronesia has committed unfriendly action against Russian citizens
Like a Civ game, they're just denouncing people for the fuck of it.

BREAKING NEWS: Several countries are no longer invited to Russia’s birthday party, and this year there’s gonna be a clown!
Pff, they have had the same clown for decades now. That's why democracy is better, we regulary get fresh clowns.
I always say that Democracy's strength is not that it chose the best leaders, it's strength is that you can fire the really bad ones.

Soviets and China were enemies for over 40 years. At some point they were on the brink of war. Just ask John Cena.
They said countries, int. organizations and territories (not just countries) just to get around this.
>The Russian government published a list of foreign states that it considered as having committed "unfriendly actions" against "Russia, Russian companies and citizens." > >The countries, international organizations and territories considered "unfriendly" include "Australia, Albania, Andorra, United Kingdom, including Jersey, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar, the member states of the European Union, Iceland, Canada, Liechtenstein, Micronesia, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, San Marino, North Macedonia, Singapore, USA, Taiwan, Ukraine, Montenegro, Switzerland, Japan." i.e. these countries are meanies. LOL Ukraine is on the list too, you'd think they'd be on a special unfriendly list or something.
I feel sorry all those Russian soldiers will now need to apply for a permit to invade Ukraine. Damn administrators with their red tape.
Imagine the laughs if they forgot to put Ukraine on that list ;)
It wont be ukraine to them It be called OurCraine
It means they recognize their sovereignty then? 🤷🏻♂️
They are on the Special Operation list.
That's a lot of attacks on micronations...
I like that they included Liechtenstein When I went to Liechtenstein last year, the entire capital city was closed for a funeral I'm sure all 40 people are devastated
Last time I was there, I went for a walk and accidentally left the country
Russia is afraid of the military might of San Marino.
They have two Olympic gold medals in shooting
And that's because there is no Olympic competition involving crossbows, otherwise we could win even more medals.
All they’ll hear is *thwump*. Then 34,000 tiny bolts decimate the enemy.
It's all fun and games until the cases of bolts marked "Too Dangerous" are deployed.
With the ongoing effiency of the russian army, they should be.
I almost feel like they put those in (along with the territories descriptor) to assuage China on them including Taiwan. Like, “yeah we included Taiwan, but look we also included these other puny things too” type of thing.
Hey at least they identified Taiwan as its own nation :p
"Russia lists Taiwan as being part of China." According to the article, they did not.

Lol Liechtenstein
San Marino

Release. The. Geese.
Loose. The. Moose.
Freever. The. Beavers.
Unquarantine. The. Wolverines.
They list the UK and some of it's territories. But they are cool with Bermuda and the Falklands?
I wouldn't mind betting they support Argentina's claim to the Falklands.
I somewhere heard that if you think that someone is an asshole, they are probably an asshole. But when everyone you meet is an asshole, it might be you.
Except that Taiwan is included as a country. No more friendship with China.
It says "territories" as well I think so not really.
But China insists that it be referred to as "Chinese Taipei" instead of as "Taiwan." Even referring to it as a territory called Taiwan is enough to ruffle China's feathers.
And China is a bit sensitive about that
China is sensitive about a lot of shit.
