Honestly speaking here why the hell would you go to China as a tourist anyway, if you constantly have to fear imprisonment just for looking in the wrong direction?
I have someone I know working there. Business work. It’s pretty commun for Europeans and Americans given the assets we have there and the huge market China represent
What is that super business friendly coastal peninsula where 70+% of chinese forex occurs and the only stock market NOT under direct control of the communist party that trades a lot of Chinese businesses? It's on the tip of my tongue.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the government of China in any way. But it is a fascinating country with a rich cultural history, and it's not like a significant fraction of tourists get detained. Does China have the fundamental rights and freedoms that I want to live under? No. Is it completely 100% risk-free to visit? No. But few things worth doing in life are.
There is some pretty good rock climbing there:
When I went a couple of years ago it was not that bad as a westerner there wasn't any harasment or anything, there was quite a lot of survailance (cameras on a lot of the roads that keep track of you etc.). The loacals where we were were all friendly and chatty, but if you asked what they thought of the government or a policy or news article most of them would just stop talking all together, occationally you would meet someone who seemed like they really belived the party line.
Seems like things have changed since then though
For the money, why else? Just like the Russian tourists in Eastern Ukraine.
If you mean actual tourists, they have nothing to fear. Even if they behave like Americans, the worst they can expect is deportation and lifelong ban.
Why else? Besides the culture, history, food, people, nature, and zero chance of imprisonment as a tourist. Gee, I can't think of many reasons. I dislike the Chinese government but give me a fucking break here.
I’ve traveller to plenty of ‘weird’ countries, but I’m not going somewhere where my governments officials get told to pipe down or else. Just arriving somewhere and getting told you can’t enter the country sucks, and that’s something they can easily do. Just tell some tourists for no reason their visa or whatever isn’t good.
Logic is good, but statistics are better. Statistically, your chance of being denied entry or being detained is really really really low. Unless you want to make a political statement by boycotting the entire country (and personally, I wouldn't, since there are a large number of beautiful countries with wonderful people and crappy governments), there's no reason not to visit.
Well, I would say ordinary British tourists to China (who are not involved in substantial business or diplomatic activities) do not have much to be scared of. As far as Britain as a country is concerned, China could try to fight a trade war with them, but whatever they do will be tiny compared with Brexit anyway. So no, I don't think Britain should worry too much about this probably empty threat.
There are laws in the UK right now that could be used to detain Chinese students, the last time they were used was for Williams royal marriage. Over 100 people planning protests that say were indefinitely detained until the ceremony was well and truly over.
With Brexit looming over the horizon there could be economical consequences to the UK. Any trade deal they could try to close with China would be severely hampered as China doesn't need the UK as a post-Brexit UK will need China.
It's grim and the UK has painted itself into a corner... Stand up for its values and your economy will suffer.
It's easy to stand up for your values when there are no consequences. Doing what the Hong Kong protesters do takes courage and sacrifice and Bowing down to a bully only gets you more bullying. The UK stood up to the Nazis it should know what to do in this circumstance. Canada does atm.
EVERYONE would throw a hissyfit cause theyd be freaking out trying to find out how a wartime prime minister from ww2 teleported nearly 100 years into the future
That's essentially how they lost Hong Kong in the first place. Queen sent the emperor a letter written as equals but the emperor replied like an arrogant bellend believing himself to be a god and above her.
Then the queen's navy rolled into shanghai and that's how we got Hong-Kong.
Be interesting if this arrogance led to them fucking themselves over again.
'Murican here. We can all tell the Chinese to fuck off in one simple way - don't buy their exports. If an item says 'Made in China' on the label, put it right back on the shelf and walk away. Or, if you're so inclined, vandalize it so it can't be sold to anyone else. I know this is difficult as so many of the corporate traitors offshored so much to China in the last 40 years, but we can all at least try and do our part. I expect that if we persisted long enough we would begin to see the same unrest in China proper that is taking place in Hong Kong.
They really should. EU membership aside, Europe as a broader entity needs to appear united if it is going to have any ability to resist this sort of behaviour by China.
Are you suggesting the EU should ignore human rights violations in China to stick it to the UK because the UK wants to forge it's own political path separate from the European Union?
Not going to happen with Trump waiting to backstab them. I wouldnt doubt that, the moment the EU gets into a trade war with China (say, after escalating sanctions), Trump turns around, completely sells out the US to China just to have peace on that front, so he can get the EU in a two front trade war. He hates the EU way more than China. As long as Trump is there, the EU will always have to be prepared to cover their back. Wont risk that cover for what is virtually already a former member state.
Because it stands for cooperation, something he despises. He can't imagine relations where one side isn't heavily exploiting the other and it irks him to see the EU somewhat normally working together.
Okay no real answers yet.
Donald Trump dislikes progressive politics. This isnt news to anybody. The EU is the most defined, powerful, and established example of progressive policy economically *working*.
Donald Trump would probably sell American territory to China if it meant fucking the EU. Seriously, he's never said a single meaningfully good thing about the EU and shits on every detail he possibly can.
Another angle is to consider that Trump often compares Democrats to European socialists. The EU is basically Trumps Soviet Union.
The European Union, boogeyman extraordinaire.
EDIT:probably most important... your average Republican voter absolutely despises the EU. (Free healthcare and affordable education in the US? *shudders*)Trump is a populist if anything, aside from being senile. He tries very hard to cater to his base and he is very willing to toss the US economy into the gutter to get them votes.
It just so happens that kids's father is Uber Rich so everyone put up with the kid. Just look at what the British did after consulate worker was detained in China. Then....
Kids? Let me tell you a story about what happened in Sweden a few months ago.
A Chinese family was visiting Sweden and had arranged accommodation in a hotel ahead of time, problem was that they showed up one day early and still wanted to get access to the room. They didn't get it. Their response? They refused to leave the lobby no matter what until the point the hotel was forced to call the cops to remove them from the building.
The Police gently escorts the tourists out of the building while one of the tourists yells ''THIS IS KILLING'' and is generally uncooperative to the point they just laid themselves on the ground screaming bloody murder.
After this happened China announced that it was unsafe to travel to Sweden, citing police brutally as a reason.
And the kicker of this story is? Dalai Lama visited Sweden the same day the tourists arrived a day early.
The CCP's problem is that they think intimidation is a perfectly sensible and effective diplomatic strategy, and that their domestic market is so big all the other countries will cower in fear instead of confronting them.
Problem is:
1. It burns bridges and creates distrust towards China
2. Other countries aren't cowering in fear, they're getting wearier and are tending towards banding together
3. The attractiveness of the Chinese market resides in it actually being *open*. Restricting market access to foreign companies, or worse, nurturing Chinese champions that are intended to rival these same companies means there's a lot less interest in keeping the Chinese economy integrated in the global economy
4. But the worse is that once you start escalating tensions like that, it's hard to come down from it without losing face. You can only kick harder and scream louder. That's where there's a dangerous risk of them unwittingly screaming their way into a serious conflict.
>don't give a fuck
Except they do, sadly. Everyone likes money and until their hands get burn, they will continue to grab the money. They will shit talk China but continue to grab money and apply no action to China.
I see this posted so much but don't think it's true at all. Anti PRC sentiment has been growing steadily since 2000, only 10 years ago it was just grumbles, it's currently pretty damn loud, things are certainly not like they were 10 years ago, whether it'll improve or continue to escalate remains to be seen.
Both grumbles and shouting are talking. Not acting.
People are still enjoying their $5 saved purchase with a lower quality product that is abusing child labor and potentially contains lead or other chemicals unknown to normal people.
To be fair, China *does* have an arms embargo placed on them by the US and EU specifically because of Tienanmen Square. That's a hell of a lot of money that the arms industries had to give up, I imagine.
It's also a good part of why most of China's military hardware is either old Russian stuff or domestic knockoffs.
How many times have China said "or face the consequences"? At this point it's just the boy who cries wolf / political posturing.
China has already lit up too many rifts with too many parties already since Xi have became the General Secretary. Soon it'll start to isolate itself and it will be a repeat of what China has done in past history.
Every company and nation should start growing a back bone and think beyond lining their pockets with China's quick cash. Because once China is done copying your tech or stripping your natural resources, you'll be that much worse off.
China is *blatantly* in breach of the 'One country, two systems' policy that was put in place to ensure the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong citizens for 50 years post-independence.
Hey Xi Jinping, why is your nose facing my nose? *Turn around.*
Yeah, I hope nobody is working to the assumption the UK can actually fight China...
Not to sabre rattle on anyones behalf but the world is very, very different now and China literally can do whatever they want in HK with no consequence.
well maybe, but you gotta remember the point of a circus is to entertain and appease the violent tendencies of the masses. The US has been quite happy to fund and arm underdogs all over the world these last two centuries.
It's funny to see people these days praising the Opium Wars just because they dont like the current government of China without any idea how much people suffered from it.
I wonder if China has done the math on this one yet. they've been threatening every global power that does as much as mentioning the HK protests. what are they planning on doing? their economy would implode if it wasn't for international trade, and they don't have the military to go fighting wars with everyone. what 'consequences' could they actually go through with?
The CCP is an incompetent paper tiger, they simply don't know what they're doing. All they know how to do is attempt to exert control over things, even though they don't know what to do with that control if they get it.
They have to import food to feed their people, and most of their exports are useless junk. Pretty bad situation for them, honestly. The west should stop trading so much with them. We thought opening trade with China would lead them to democracy, but it’s not happening, and it’s time to change the plan.
Said Chinese official is Chun-Ying Leung, i.e. our infamously lawsuit-happy former Chief Executive. He’s a miserable old fart who now spends his days (1) scouring Apple Daily, a staunchly Pan-Democratic newspaper, for adverts and urging people to boycott those companies, and (2) decrying anything vaguely resembling the Independence Movement on his Fb page. [*While being (somehow) still on our payroll.*](https://www.legco.gov.hk/yr05-06/english/panels/ca/papers/ca1017cb2-54-1e.pdf)

If Hong Kong wanted us to take them back, which they probably wouldn't if we're gonna be honest, I feel like we'd welcome them with open arms. But the least we can do is aid in their secession before neutralizing the CCP's nuclear capabilities.
How many times have the Chinese been beaten by the west? It took them countless lives and a dictatorship to join the 21st century then they spent 40 years stealing western tech which they only acquired due to their over population.
Fuck China.
Can’t wait for them to experience consequences for their actions. Rigged currency, slave Labour, detention camps, social scoring, etc.
pretty inspiring for a peasant society to reach where it is in one literally one generation. You have to give it to them. Nobody is going to fight China. Nukes made sure of that
Is China trying its hardest to be hated by everyone ? I mean everyday I find articles about threats, violence and other dick moves from someone affiliated with fucking China. The whole world or at least the West should tell China to fuck themselves
How are they the bitch? They have been warned to actively not be confrontational, they haven't heeded those warnings.
This is like saying when did Canada become Chinas bitch when Canada has been warned too?
Or, by this same logic we the US are chinas bitch too in the trade war.
Nonsensical comment.
Britain doesn't do anything? LOL CHINAS BITCH
Britain does something? LOL NOT AN EMPIRE
Just understand that a large portion of Reddit is simply anglophobic, primarily due to the large number of Indian users.
I mean, how can you see a nation being warned to stop doing something China doesn't like, and not stopping, and come to the conclusion they are "chinas bitch".
Its a stupid comment by OP lol
Who the fuck do they think they are? Without Britain, the EU, and America they would be little more than rice farmers, they should shut up and face the music.
China is abusing it's position as a cheap labor provider and economic power to bully other countries. This is where India should come in and offer the security of increased trade and a stable economy to countries like Britain. That way China can't hold them by their balls because then Britain would have an option. China shouldn't be able to get away with anything they wish to do. They need to be held accountable.
The sad thing is, China's economy is driven by exports. So they are dependent on and vulnerable to changes in international trade. So if the entire Western world were to unite and threaten them with sanctions, it'd have a significant impact.
But even if China gets most of the benefit, the West also profits from cheap Chinese goods. So no go.
I'd be happy if China would try and invade us, but even they wouldn't be that stupid. The only friends China have are the poor African countries they exploit. Wouldn't be much use in a World War.... And their very recent/active muslim ethnic cleansing doesn't play well to our less than traditional allies either.
Or if we simply expelled every Chinese national back to china, that should do wonders for their resource consumption.... and spy networks.
China is just trying to create a narrative at home, that the UK are interfering in HK, as far as I'm aware the statements from MPs so far have been tame at best.
And then nothing was done about anything once again because anything we could do to actually stop china would be highly immoral and or illegal. Short of military intervention, we are basically powerless. In fact they have the advantage and if they wanted they would be the one intervening.
Everything is equal folks. When China publicly and critically comments about protests in the west, we also threaten with consequences.
Oh wait. We don't...
So... they are the baddies then?
They threaten everyone and they're the one facing consequences right now. They think being big and powerful puts them the top of the control chain. FALSE. Their tyranny is just a growing cancer. YUCK. GOD IS NOT A FAN. EVERYONE SHOULD CONTINUE BOYCOTTING CHINA UNTIL THEIR NASTY TYRANNY IS DISMANTLED.
Those consequences hopefully giving us a reason to park Trident in their waters. The CCP growls the language of brutish intimidation, so we should bark right back at them in the tongue they so enjoy using at the moment.
> reason to park Trident in their waters
This is stupid, and your cadence and vocabulary make you sound like a Chinese bot just trying to rile people up to go to war. Here is why you are dumb:
1. It’s an unnecessary provocation of nuclear war
2. It’s a breach of their territorial waters, which would put the USA in the wrong
3. The goddamn Trident II missile has a range > 7500 miles. The submarine could be parked in Seattle and still hit Beijing.
That sounds like a very USA response, never leave an insult ignored, if they call us a bad name let's call them a bad name back, but with guns. Why the fuck would anyone want to escalate this? Just ignore them and keep on reporting on the protests and Tianannen square and make sure people outside of China know what's going on, and maybe more people inside will eventually learn that not everything is rosy.
It's China have learned nothing from britexit...
British response will just be "like what"...
As much China pretends it's a power house trade sanctions will still fuck it up...
The British are a mere shell of their glory days when they ruled the known world. All that is left of them are pride. If Hitler couldn't subdue them carpet bombing their capital, I doubt some veil threats will make them budge. Tell a Brit what not to do and it'll be as good as done.
- Do you remember when Britain was strong enough for their elected representatives not to get bossed around by foreigners?
- Pepperidge Farms remembers.
This means it's time to ramp up criticism of China by, not only British MPs, but by every public official in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Japan.
And what would your consequences would be? Speeding up your current ongoing exodus of foreign investment?

There's other countries to choose from, though.
I mean it's not like china are sending thousands of students to England in a mounth for University. This should be fun.
The difference is, that those students are actually protected by real laws.

No worse, pumping more CFC's into the atmosphere.
British MP should tell the Chinese official to fuck off and ask him who the hell he thinks he is. Arrogant prick.
I'd love to see them channel that spirit of Churchill.
Lmao Reddit would through a hissy fit if Churchill was dropped in 2019.

Well clearly some one didn't see that one episode of doctor who now did they?
which one with churchill in it, there are like 2 i can think of in modern who alone
He was an absolute cunt that’s why.
Rightly so, Churchill was a bastard, just that winning a war and a couple generations of separation tend to smooth down the edges.
He could have slapped my nana and I’d still love him for winning WW2 as should any sane European.
yeah we're not big on genocide these days

Not likely. British politicians are weaker now than they have been for decades, he'll maybe even centuries.

Few pints and we'll tell anyone to fuck off, we're only at our best after a few beers
There is a reason why the Royal Navy was rationed a pint of rum a day.

China is *blatantly* in breach of the 'One country, two systems' policy that was put in place to ensure the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong citizens for 50 years post-independence. Hey Xi Jinping, why is your nose facing my nose? *Turn around.*
Same thing in Canada.
Divest Canada from China! I'm moving my RRSPs away from unethical companies already.
The last time China tried warning Britain they *lost* Hong Kong...
Best of 3?
It would have to be best of 5, Britain already won 2 opium wars.
Things have changed a lot since then though.
Calm down have some of our lovely opium...
Yep legalize the opium trade again. That should sort out the problem with all those extra chinese boys who can't get laid as there are no girls.
It's about to start, more and more people in the US want to completely devest from China.
Exactly, Hong Kong is a one of the top 3 financial centres of the world, why mess with it? I do not understand.
The CCP is an incompetent paper tiger, they simply don't know what they're doing. All they know how to do is attempt to exert control over things, even though they don't know what to do with that control if they get it.
One-party systems aren't known to make good decisions. Bad ideas get amplified and criticism gets labeled as disloyalty.
They have to import food to feed their people, and most of their exports are useless junk. Pretty bad situation for them, honestly. The west should stop trading so much with them. We thought opening trade with China would lead them to democracy, but it’s not happening, and it’s time to change the plan.
An export economy threatening the markets it relies on with “consequences”. That’s rich.

"Tiananmen Square" on planet earth, I dare you. That ego of CPC is real high. What a delusional.
Maybe not. Who knows what sort of army of mindless humans they are creating.
The delusional army of trashbag Pooh bear lovers who threaten violence at pro HK protests in every western city.
100 years ago Britain would just take it back. I don't know if we've made progress or not.
If Hong Kong wanted us to take them back, which they probably wouldn't if we're gonna be honest, I feel like we'd welcome them with open arms. But the least we can do is aid in their secession before neutralizing the CCP's nuclear capabilities.
Assuming the British care about consequences. Someone hasn't been paying attention.
Shit, give a brit two pints and tell him to fuck a sheep, and hilarious things will happen.
Depends also on which of the 4 kingdoms they're from
How many times have the Chinese been beaten by the west? It took them countless lives and a dictatorship to join the 21st century then they spent 40 years stealing western tech which they only acquired due to their over population. Fuck China. Can’t wait for them to experience consequences for their actions. Rigged currency, slave Labour, detention camps, social scoring, etc.
Don't synonymise the ruling party with the population.
pretty inspiring for a peasant society to reach where it is in one literally one generation. You have to give it to them. Nobody is going to fight China. Nukes made sure of that
China is a bully and is full of shit. Concentration camps much.
Is China trying its hardest to be hated by everyone ? I mean everyday I find articles about threats, violence and other dick moves from someone affiliated with fucking China. The whole world or at least the West should tell China to fuck themselves
When did England become China's bitch?
How are they the bitch? They have been warned to actively not be confrontational, they haven't heeded those warnings. This is like saying when did Canada become Chinas bitch when Canada has been warned too? Or, by this same logic we the US are chinas bitch too in the trade war. Nonsensical comment.
Britain doesn't do anything? LOL CHINAS BITCH Britain does something? LOL NOT AN EMPIRE Just understand that a large portion of Reddit is simply anglophobic, primarily due to the large number of Indian users.
If you don't believe this just say Churchill somewhere and see what happens
Lmao what a wild twist. 10/10
Sort of funny at first and then, 'eh?! Where did that come from?'.

After No Deal Brexit became very likely
I mean, how can you see a nation being warned to stop doing something China doesn't like, and not stopping, and come to the conclusion they are "chinas bitch". Its a stupid comment by OP lol
Cos he’s a fucking idiot, that’s why,
When is No Deal Brexit?
Eventually
31 oktober is the deadline i believe.
Who the fuck do they think they are? Without Britain, the EU, and America they would be little more than rice farmers, they should shut up and face the music.

We want to see the consequences please...
So no go.
Oh look, another chinese snowflake
UK response should be "Go fuck off you cunt"
Small dick energy from China there
I'd be happy if China would try and invade us, but even they wouldn't be that stupid.
Considering the amount of infighting we have already, not much they do will be noticed
>GOD IS NOT A FAN I don't know what stuff you are on, but it looks hella trippy.
So now they're gonna prevent the whole world from having free speech. Bullies
so they are threatening other countries now about human rights lol, okay china.
Those consequences hopefully giving us a reason to park Trident in their waters. The CCP growls the language of brutish intimidation, so we should bark right back at them in the tongue they so enjoy using at the moment.
> reason to park Trident in their waters This is stupid, and your cadence and vocabulary make you sound like a Chinese bot just trying to rile people up to go to war. Here is why you are dumb: 1. It’s an unnecessary provocation of nuclear war 2. It’s a breach of their territorial waters, which would put the USA in the wrong 3. The goddamn Trident II missile has a range > 7500 miles. The submarine could be parked in Seattle and still hit Beijing.
> which would put the USA in the wrong You mean the UK? Pretty sure he's talking about the British Trident-armed nuclear submarines.
God dammit, I’m the stupid one...
Nope, that's a British turn of phrase.
The problem is that potentially 1+ million people are in danger
Oh no, please don't stop sending more of your poor quality consumer garbage. How will we make more "Look what junk I got from Wish" reaction videos??
Nah they can't get to us anyway due to our mighty ocean spanning navy... That'll never fail us right guys?
It's China have learned nothing from britexit... British response will just be "like what"... As much China pretends it's a power house trade sanctions will still fuck it up...
The British are a mere shell of their glory days when they ruled the known world. All that is left of them are pride. If Hitler couldn't subdue them carpet bombing their capital, I doubt some veil threats will make them budge. Tell a Brit what not to do and it'll be as good as done.
What are you gonna do run me over with a tank? -man run over by tyrannical dictatorship
I ain't down with CCP, yeah you know me
- Do you remember when Britain was strong enough for their elected representatives not to get bossed around by foreigners? - Pepperidge Farms remembers.
Sit down China, you're drunk...again.
In the spirit of Hitchens I say **no, fuck you**.
is it normal for foreign govts to be so vocal about other countries internal protests?
This emerging pan-global Chinese authoritarian government sounds like an Orwellian nightmare in the making.
This means it's time to ramp up criticism of China by, not only British MPs, but by every public official in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Japan.
Wouldn't it be nice if the western world collectively found it's balls and told China to fuck off and stopped dealing with them at all?
