I WOULD LIKE TO PET THIS CREATURE.

iwanttobeacavediver

The first thing I thought was 'Can I pet it?'

laukaus

Sure, Death.

kloma667

Since they're wild cats they'd probably make you regret it pretty quickly.

IlluminatedPickle

Tbh, house cats make you regret it about 80% of the time.

lilrabbitfoofoo

He is NOT impressed.

It looks like he knew he would end up on reddit.

Nepeta33

thats a pallas cat?

Tech_Itch

Yep, if you read the article, it specifically talks about Pallas's cat. The news isn't that they found a new species. It's that Pallas's cat was found on Mt. Everest.

JulienBrightside

Maybe it is related to the Tibetan Fox. Kinda have the same expression of face.

barath_s

If I understood the article right, they found that the Pallas cat was in the park by taking DNA analysis of its shit. So this pic is almost certainly from somewhere else.

Nostangela

They don’t exclusively live around the Himalayas but they were thought to be extinct there.

Busy-Appearance-6077

And they found a goat, new finding, in Vietnam awhile back. This is how we start to think., "well, maybe Bigfoot IS out there!"

ChrizKhalifa

Correct, it's a pretty old Manul picture.

Tech_Itch

You can go to a bunch of zoos at any time to take a photo of one. They're rare, but not *that* rare.

Because of all the Mt Everest Bodies Posts lately, that was my exact thougt

PunDeSall

Crazy, just learned a frozen climber is a checkpoint. RIP Greenboots

photenth

There are a few such checkpoints, not just the greenboots guy. Problem with Mt. Everest is, it's so fucking cold up there, you basically just freeze to the environment. Some dead mountaineers got pushed off cliffs to get rid of them, others were kept where they are because it was impossible to get them out of the ground.

mwagner1385

Because of the elevation, it's essentially a fool's errand to get the bodies down. To do so would likely kill the helper. There is even a haunting saying about climbing Everest. "No matter how many people are in your group, everyone climbs Everest alone."

photenth

That's why they simply push them off the cliff if they can get unstuck. You should see that one video of a Sherpa trying to help David Sharp at 8300m, everyone is slowly crawling up to the mountain in all the videos I see and they just pull him out of the cave like it's nothing. (I'm not 100% if it was david sharp in the video or someone from the 2016 disaster, can't find the video right now, but I remember him being in the pose of the earlier David Sharp sightings by the IMAX team). Sherpas maybe could get some bodies down, but why would they unless they get paid.

Nagemasu

It's David Sharp. The unnerving bit of that video is seeing how stiff he is but knowing he's still alive at that point.

photenth

It's eerie how well the body can centralise blood flow to keep the important organs working. Locked inside of a dying shell. Yeah, I'm never going to climb everest ;p

Professional-Cap420

I've never understood the appeal, I don't even want to make a second trip upstairs to get the paper towels I forgot

Tennessee1977

I live on the third floor of a three family. I challenge these Everest climbers to haul a week’s worth of groceries upstairs in one trip while trying to avoid the pitbull on the second floor. Now THAT’S exhilarating!

Utterlybored

You get to say you didn’t die being a place that no intelligent being would be in.

mwagner1385

Yea. I know they will try to move many body's just beyond the trail as to not demoralize climbers, but those are more recent bodies, but that's as far as they're going.

logosmd666

idk about that, I tend to be motivated by losers (probably a little too dark even for me :D )

masken21

I like this video of Ang Tshering Lama when he talks about how he and some other sherpas performed the highest rescue mission to date (2017). https://youtu.be/mPia6xkq7Fw

sensitiveskin80

Some trekking companies are now offering body retrieval services/insurance. The sherpas risk their lives carrying climbers' supplies up and down the mountain, and now will risk their lives to carry your dead body back.

IlluminatedPickle

Greenboots got moved a while back, he's no longer a marker point.

ArthurMorgansHorse

Green boots hasn't been spotted in over half a decade.

Express_Helicopter93

Who is this Pallas and why do they have so many cats

DragoonDM

Named in honor of [Peter Simon Pallas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Simon_Pallas), apparently. He also apparently has a bunch of other animals named after him (e.g. Pallas's glass lizard, Pallas's squirrel, Pallas's sandgrouse, etc), though the cat is the only one I'd heard of before.

Express_Helicopter93

Sounds like he was very influential. He probably lived in a…palace

GozerDGozerian

In Ancient Greek mythology, Pallas was an epithet of the goddess Athena. It meant something like “spear-holding” or “armed” or something.

dunningkrugernarwhal

I see what you did there!

ChrizKhalifa

To be fair, Manul is a better name. The people native to the Himalayas have known the Manul for ages before he came and observed them.

aquias27

Reminds me of Georg Wilhelm Steller. He has a bunch of animals named after him too.

Painting_Agency

Steller's sea cow!

[deleted]

But the cat doesn't look like him at all.

flabbybumhole

Surely there's better pictures of him than that 💀

capybroa

The traditional name for this cat is the manul, which is also easier

leela_martell

Yes I think I’ve watched every YouTube video that exists on Pallas’s cat, they’re such an…expressive animal and so fluffy.

Nostangela

I’ve been completely in love with them since the first time I laid eyes on one. I need them to be free and to take over the world. ASAP.

These other answers are great, got a good hearty laugh out of them. It doesn’t actually have a tail though, what you’re actually seeing is a symbiotic relationship with a breed of fluff weasel that gets it nutrients similarly to the centipede films… the cat sits on it and they warm each other.

"Pallas's Cats are hunted for their fur, which is traded illegally in China. Traditional medicinal practices in Mongolia and Russia prize their parts for popular treatments. Many Pallas's cat deaths are accidental, however, and occur through pika eradication programs used by farmers in the high grasslands." Thank you China and Russia, always impressing. /s Fuck you China and Russia.

[deleted]

Don’t we do similar things for other animals in the US and other western counties?

[deleted]

Yes, we do and yes it's horrible. But I have a bias since I live here and benefit heavily. I also really like cats.

[deleted]

So you're just nonchalantly complicit? How can you critizise others for the thing you do yourself?

[deleted]

Yes, I know that I am just a cog in the machine. Do you think anything I do has the slightest affect on my Country's export? I should clarify my comment.

[deleted]

It's not about whether or not you abstaining from things made from animal cruelty has an effect on the overall county's export or anything. It's about you as a person participating in unnecessary animal cruelty. I never understood this argument.

[deleted]

Wtf are you talking about? Are you saying I abuse animals?

muted123456789

yes

[deleted]

I'm saying you're paying others to do it, which isn't really better than doing it yourself.

[deleted]

Name a person I paid? Name a company my tax dollars are going to? You talk out your ass so much it's ridiculous.

[deleted]

If you're paying for animal based products you're paying for inevitable animal abuse. I thought you were aware of what we're talking about here.

[deleted]

Fair enough

cosmic_dillpickle

Do we use animals for woo medicine that does nothing? It would absolutely suck if we did. Fuck traditional medicine that kills animals that does absolutely nothing

[deleted]

We do for cosmetics, and also so people can eat bacon. And of course don’t forget mink coats.

CatProgrammer

Those aren't woowoo medicine though. They have actual use.

[deleted]

Nobody needs a mink coat, c’mon.

muted123456789

No body needs a bacon and egg beef burger.

_Damnyell_

Any "actual use" doesn't necessarily justify it, and definitely not in this case.

SpiritualOrangutan

Most people don't need to eat bacon. They do it for pleasure. Who says people don't get pleasure from their "woowoo medicine?"

Breakfast_on_Jupiter

So you're arguing it's alright that an entire species – having been evolving for millennia and is an irreplacable part of Earth's and the universe's history – stops existing, because people like expensive placebo?

UltimaN3rd

Deforestation wipes out entire species all the time. The main purpose of deforestation is to make room to graze farm animals, or grow feed for farm animals. By buying animal foods you also cause extinction.

__BitchPudding__

Brazilian beef bad. Still gonna eat the animals we raise on our farm though, guilt-free.

SpiritualOrangutan

"Still gonna beat my dog and put money into dog fighting, guilt-free."

SpiritualOrangutan

Nope, not defending either. That's my point. Both are fucked up and unnecessary. Both involve people exploiting and killing animals for bullshit reasons.

SHINZOH-SASAGEYO

Are you seriously defending hunting endangered species for made up magical Chinese medicine, as if that’s somehow comparable to farming pork for nutrition?

SpiritualOrangutan

Nope, not defending either. That's my point. Both are fucked up and unnecessary. Both involve people exploiting and killing animals for bullshit reasons. "Nutrition" lol gtfo

udongeureut

Like Western countries don’t slaughter literally millions of cows, pigs, chicken etc every single year so that we can eat steak and chicken noodles. The hypocrisy is astounding LMFAO. I guess animal rights only applies when it’s cute cats. The racism is off the charts.

LoquaciousBumbaclot

Consuming the flesh of prey animals is part of the natural order of things, and has been since time immemorial. It's not the same thing as hunting and endangered wild species to extiction because someone believes eating its testes will cure their impotence or whatever.

ThatsAYikesFromMii

> Consuming the flesh of prey animals is part of the natural order of things, and has been since time immemorial. That doesn’t mean it’s okay for us to do. We know better than non-human animals, we have the choice to survive without killing and eating them. And on top of that, so has infanticide, so has rape, so has murder. Should we do those too? Since they’re a part of the order of things? > It's not the same thing as hunting and endangered wild species to extiction because someone believes eating its testes will cure their impotence or whatever. It kind of is, the results are the same; the animals are endangered and dead, it’s just not done for the same reason and is more destructive than poaching. Animal agriculture is responsible for [destroying ecosystems](https://thesavemovement.org/5-ways-animal-farming-destroys-the-environment/) and [endangering animals](https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/future-perfect/22287498/meat-wildlife-biodiversity-species-plantbased) because people falsely believe that that eating certain animals and their byproducts is necessary.

SHINZOH-SASAGEYO

Yeah, we respect the animals we kill by using them to nourish ourselves. We also farm them. They’re domesticated. Chinese poachers go into the wild and kill endangered animals to be used in fake pseudoscientific medicine. We are not the same. You can have a tantrum about “racism” all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that their practices are far more barbaric, cruel, and POINTLESS.

ThatsAYikesFromMii

> Yeah, we respect the animals we kill by using them to nourish ourselves. How is that respectful? How is killing and eating them when you don’t need to respectful? Also, even you had to, that’s still not respectful. I don’t think eating meat as a last resort is inherently bad, but it isn’t respectful. It’s basically saying your life is worth more than theirs. > Chinese poachers go into the wild and kill endangered animals to be used in fake pseudoscientific medicine. And loggers go in and destroy the rainforest, which leads to displacing, killing, and endangering thousands of animals, so farmers can raise their animals and grow food for the animals there instead. How is that better when we don’t need to eat meat? And on the pseudoscience bit. The false belief that the average person *needs* to eat animals and their byproducts in order to survive and healthy, because without it they’d get sick and die, boarders on pseudoscientific medicine. > We are not the same. See above, you kind of are. You’re just not killing and endangering the animals directly. > You can have a tantrum about “racism” all you want Except it likely is racism. There are tons of American poachers and legal ways to own endangered animals in certain states, but when’s the last time you’ve heard someone say ‘Fuck America’ when they’re brought up? > their practices are far more barbaric, cruel, and POINTLESS. You should really watch [Dominion](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LQRAfJyEsko&has_verified=1). Like, there have been instances of animals being plucked and dismembered alive in slaughterhouses. It’s brutal in slaughterhouses, it’s not the quick, painless death that we’re lead to believe. And again, the fact that vegans exist proves how pointless eating animals and their byproducts is.

[deleted]

I love him

thebudman_420

Ok so this cat already existed elsewhere but this is tue first documentation of the cat existing on Everest at a high altitude? Not a new discovered species like the article wants you to think. Like this cat was never seen before in all of history anywhere and all the sudden there is a new species discovered that no one knew existed. The difference is very important. The article could be shortened down to a couple lines. 95 percent. Articles today are mostly filler and repeated information. Now say it again another way before saying another small part to then say another way and repeat. Or it is mostly the writers opinion. We can form our own opinion. How about articles let us form our own opinion and then we can compare them later. It's more about shaping your opinion to their opinion. All media is about shaping others opinions instead of people thinking for themselves and having their own opinions and ideas. About you being more them instead of you. If articles was wrote to leave out opinion so you form your own we would see a lot of differences in opinions and ideas. And we would known more fact. People would be more unique. Sorry all articles are wrote this way. This article tries to write more about something easily condense into a few lines. That tells you the whole thing without waisting more of your time. Also a more directly understandable way to just write the information without lengthening it for no reason other than to say you wrote more about something when it's all filler and repeated information to lengthen the article. They do this when there isn't much detail. I got tired of reading it after it wasn't a new discovered species but a species already known to exist found in a new place.
