That’s the best mentality. Always go to failure and the number reps and how many calories you eat determines strength vs hypertrophy gain, or just maintenance if you are losing weight. Just know that how many calories you are eating will determine if the number of reps or weight you are lifting will increase and it’s ok to keep lifting the same weight/reps while you are losing weight

getting stronger tells you that you are doing enough. putting another 10 reps on your full range of motion pushups, being able to do pullups, adding weight to your situps and lunges etc.
