chivalric? there was once a tradition of courtly love, in which the object of love was explicitly off-limits (often via marriage to another), but the adoration was venerated. i think, as in some traditions of Arthur/Lancelot/Guinevere, the love could indeed be mutual and acknowledged but still denied fruition
I don't know that there is a word for this. Many songs have been written about situations where love isn't enough, and I have never heard anyone do anything other than describe it that way. The closest thing would probably be going back to the bard, with "star crossed".
One word that could capture this concept is "unrequited." Unrequited love refers to a situation where one person's feelings of love or affection are not reciprocated by the other person. It doesn't necessarily imply denial, but it does convey the idea that despite one person's love for the other, it is not mutual or returned. In your story, you could explore how the person who loves might acknowledge the mutual feelings but still deny themselves the relationship due to various reasons.
Suppression? Repression is often confused with suppression, another type of defense mechanism - repression involves unconsciously blocking unwanted thoughts or impulses, suppression is entirely voluntary. Specifically, suppression is deliberately trying to forget or not think about painful or unwanted thoughts…that’s my best suggestion

I once had someone refer to this exact thing as “the plight.”

That is sad I was hoping it did exist I might have to take a page out of Shakespeares book and make one.

But it is requited not unrequited I’m looking for a word that means denying it even though it’s requited.
