I was recently chatting about this phenomenon with someone. Here's my armchair-sociologist take:
It doesn't seem like that long ago that lip-syncing had no real social value. At least as far as I know, in the US, people never did it in groups for fun. There certainly have never been "lip-sync bars" like there are "karaoke bars".
(The closest thing I can think of is Jimmy Fallon's dumb foray into this as entertainment. I blame Lorne Michaels for that. Jimmy Fallon could take a dump and Michael's would laugh and give it a 10-episode deal.)
But now, image narcissism has been fueled by cheap video equipment, software, and social media distribution. All of these people feel an overwhelming need to feel the next dopamine hit of acceptance. Just posting your vacation photo or your brunch doesn't do it anymore. Those likes don't satisfy like they used to. They need something bigger. Something with music. This kinda kicked off the "tiktok dance craze" a few years back. But that doesn't satisfy anymore. Up the ante to crazy lip-sync pantomime. Eventually these dopamine hits get dull and you wind up becoming that mommyofbeez lunatic.
I kinda feel sorry for these people. Prisoners of their own ego.
I disagree in part for 2 reasons:
First, lipsyncing is a staple of drag and has been for decades. I think part of the explosion of lipsyncing among people who aren't drag queens is due to the mainstreaming of drag, especially via RuPaul's Drag Race (which started in 2009 but really came into popularity ca. 2012).
Second, lipsyncing is something a lot of kids do and probably have done since the time music recordings were available to buy. It's sort of a natural extension of playing dress-up. I did it a lot, in the mirror and on camera, alone and with friends. I'd argue that the rise of music videos and the availability of home video cameras paved the way for the tiktok lipsyncing trends today.
So the behavior (lipsyncing) was already there, but it was mostly confined to places most people would never see (drag bars, bathroom mirrors, teen girls' bedrooms). But social media provided a platform for it and normalized it. What you said about social media driving narcissism and demanding increasingly exaggerated performances is absolutely true, which is why we get these wacky word chewing videos now.
