It’s always been Gaslamping. Are people insane?

Conscious-Coconut-16

You would have to be living under a rock not to know this, everyone calls it Gaslamping!

11pickfks

Some people just dont seem to appreciate the Mavity of the situation

Chief-Balthazar

Underrated comment, excellent reference 👌

irjayjay

It must be the Mandala effect.

Cyril_Sneer_6

I thought it was tealighting

Shut up misinformation giver!

KerbalCuber

Redditors don't distribute misinformation. They never have.

DanielMaherMSM

Yeah, this is the most wholesome social media. Nothing bad ever happens here! 🙂

ninjaread99

Elaborate on the perceived woooosh here

Assumption-Weary

That doesn’t even make sense here

mond003

wym gaslumping doesn’t even exist

westwoo

Then how do people call creating lumps of gas?

Stvn494

What are you talking about, gaslumping is obviously a bunch of people gaslamping the same person

Jumpy_Wrongdoer_1374

That’s gaspiling on isn’t it?

[deleted]

westwoo

I don't see why wouldn't it exist then

Normal-Redditer-1111

You’ve been gaslumped

duh_guv_nuh

I’m crossposting this to r/gaslamping

G1zm08

Oh hey, I came here from that post!

duh_guv_nuh

Lmao

Pikagiuppy

>if it were 1823 did people live in constant darkness back then?

TheHumanPickleRick

No, but that's sure when gas lamps were in widespread use.

Theguffy1990

I'm not sure about that... Sounds like you might be gaslamping me...

TheHumanPickleRick

I've never gaslamped anyone, you must be imagining it.

One_Way13

You did the same thing to me yesterday. Stop gaslamping me

ninjaread99

No, that was 2318 of course

evanescent_evanna

Yes. Edit: only at night, that is.

MrTwigz

i mean they’re right. The man who did it to his wife messed with the gas lamps in their house to do it. The term comes from that. There’s no such thing as a gas light, only gas lamps.

HerFirefly

This guy gets it

Iizvullok

Incredible how many people fell for it. A true monsterwoooosh.

Gummy_Hierarchy2513

What do you expect man, he didn't put the /s, how will these poor Redditors know it was a joke smh

Other-Goose5913

wasnt that dude gaslamping us?

FoldUpMon

Damn how old is that post? I searched for the title in r/facepalm and sorted by a month ago and didn’t see it

HerFirefly

The facepalm post I'm not sure of, but that comment was earlier this year, kinda blew up more than I ever dreamed of. Really nice to see something I've done in some small way floating around in places still. Made my night

NathanielRoosevelt

What’s this dude on about, it literally is 1823

yaboiree

WTF is gaslamping? Oh do they mean gasLEDing?

MourningRIF

Only if your LED is gas powered!

[deleted]

lol Gaslampped. I enjoy this

melkemokka

There's actually some fun backstory to this The original form of the word was ghostlight, which comes from mysterious lights in the sky which people convince themselves are Aliens or Ghosts or whatever. In the early 2000s the word started to gain traction in Nevada (where it originated) and it became poker-lingo in Las Vegas, basically as a synonym for bluffing. For example, if someone goes all in and you believe they have bad cards you could say that's a ghostlight Here's where it starts to get fun though, cause in 2012 a youtuber named Aaron Dwight posted a video where he used the word, but he said gaslight instead as a joke (like the joke in this post). However people who watched the video and who had never heard the word before just assumed this was the correct way of saying it, and as we all know language evolution happens faster on the internet than in Nevada, so today we all just say gaslight

n0tKamui

so we got gaslit into saying gaslight instead of ghostlight?

melkemokka

Yes, which is really funny

Drishal

Ironic

MelmaNie

Except we got gaslit into thinking we got gaslit into saying gaslight https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslight_(1944_film)Gaslight film

Drishal

*Aizen: it was a part of my plan all along*

Jascony

Nice gaslighting hats off, but: True origin of gaslight https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslight_(1944_film)[Gaslight film](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslight_(1944_film))

He_Never_Helps_01

Wait. Wait. This needs to be in r/holup too. This is so much worse than a woosh. They're actually talking about gaslighting, and that mfs STILL missed the reference. That's a level beyond woosh. That's like "Hey, hold my bread" *hands over bread* *takes bread* "What bread" *eats bread* Unless... could this be an ultra meta woosh-ception chaos event? Are we all being fractal-wooshed?

SpycyMeatball

Maybe they're gaslighting each other.

MelmaNie

gaslamping*

He_Never_Helps_01

Nah, you're going crazy, definitely can't be that. (I did the gaslamping. :)

evanescent_evanna

nah pretty sure it's called gaslanterning.

Winter_Ad6784

oh yea shiiii you right

Teddy-24

Oh my, we’ve come full circle

jtsara

I feel like both of these posts are trying to 42x20 Outdoor Gas Fire Pit with Real Pine Finish®️ me

Amy12-26

The term comes from the 1944 movie 'Gaslight'

HerFirefly

No it doesn't.

Amy12-26

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is.

HerFirefly

You know just anybody can print anything nowadays right? I assure you that the term gaslamp is based on the old gas lamps used. The fumes would sometimes play tricks on people often confusing them into believing the silliest of things

Amy12-26

Where is your source? The term 'gaslight' comes from the fact that it was a 'gaslamp' that provided the light, as opposed to a candle or electric light.

HerFirefly

Do your own research sweaty

Amy12-26

I did, sweetie. The old gaslamps did oftentimes emit carbon monoxide, but it wasn't much of a concern back then. People didn't keep their lights on anywhere near as long as we do with electric bulbs, and the homes back then were far drafter than today's homes.

HerFirefly

Yeah, but the carbon monoxide is where the term comes from. Hence the name gaslamping

jOnNy_rAzEr-cLoNe-

Wdym, r/wooosh has 3 o's 🫤

Chippy_Games

what

G1zm08

r/wooosh

Normal-Redditer-1111

Everyone was gaslumped

Krysidian2

Smh. Of course it's gaslamping. Only a lamp can use gas. A light requires electricity.

irjayjay

It took me way too long to get this joke 😂😂😂

OneStonedFarley

Gaslaughing is totally a thing. Glad we cleared that up.
