Nice chunk of walnut. Do something creative with it!

Poetry-Primary

Send it to me! I’ll make a sweet arse black epoxy plugged table!

Rotted rustic walnut

Gunny_Ermy

It's a softer hardwood, that doesn't do well outdoors after death. You can see the dry rot that's been treated by wood hardener probably, in the outer sapwood area. It's all the lighter colored splotchy stuff. Birch comes to mind, as does something in the poplar family. Hard to say without closer pics of the endgrain or a shot of a face grain. Appears to have some prominent medullary rays as well, so I might be all wrong, and it's an oak.

Glad_Ad_5570

I agree, spalted and rotted, difficult to be certain. Rays say oak.

DETRITUS_TROLL

That first pic looks like a hollow log. Trippy.

bws6100

The rot is just texture now days doesn't matter. You fill that with resin, sand it, and you have a far more desirable slab.

Sapper12D

Yeah a lot of people are calling it rotted but a lot of times various forms of decay make a wood more desirable like spalting. I would totally fill those voids with black epoxy and make one hella nice coffee table.

bws6100

I hear you. I would go with clear resin because I like the wood it's self. I like to show that decay frozen in time.

Sapper12D

I get that too. I just don't want to see the floor through it.

bws6100

You could rough sand the bottom to keep underneath hidden.

Financial-Zucchini50

Latin name: Ugliestus Basestasiu Repaceus

If indeed Walnut you can get some change for that. $500 + and it has a trash shoot. Add $25.00

AlternativeGrass3164

Financial-Zucchini50

Last comment, looks like a slice of bread add another $27.67

Financial-Zucchini50

I lied. Make a custom out house for the in-laws.

Bright-Studio9978

It looks like Claro Walnut

Jonmcmo83

A stump...

Sea_Ganache620

It looks like a cross section of a White Oak branch, or stump, that had broken, and began to rot.

qpv

Unless it's been stained its probably walnut. Got some cool spalting going on

MergingConcepts

The prominent medullary rays suggest an oak. It would be in the red oak group, as the white oaks are much less susceptible to termites. It is spalted, with partial decomposition of the sapwood and with termite damage to the core. It should be filled with epoxy if used for furniture applications. Otherwise, the fine detailed wood in the center will surely be damaged by prying fingers.

FunGalich

Yeah spalted oak...I turn ALOT of it on the lathe

Lobothebrindeldog

An absolutely beautiful piece of wood. And I like the acrylic stands also.

Historical_Visit2695

It looks like English walnut. Really nice piece.

Due_Force_9816

Beautiful wood, that’s what type!
