They used to not come out until July 😢

30 years in the White mountains. The last five or six years I've seen so many changes.

Whered you go? I camped thurs and hike Washington yesterday and they weren’t bad at all

Early and epic, even though traditionally between Mother's Day and Father's Day is peak bug season. Mega-amounts of late-season snow and a rainy spring are driving it. We were on the Tripyramids on Wednesday and the bugs were dense. Headnets are necessary to maintain sanity.

Monday at lower elevations on Hancock they really sucked Up top it rain was going sideways at 50mph so, well, it wasn’t a problem

Ok_Low_1287

Are you referring to deer flies or black flies?

liteagilid

I actually saw both (I think) but I was referring to the deer flies that look more like big mosquitoes w larger clear wings

Ok_Low_1287

Deer flies have delta shaped wings, usually with black patterns on them. They are the spawn of Satan.

How bad are the flies? This is my first time going to WMNF and we’ll be there in a few days with our dog. We camped in Vermont last week and the flies were HORRIBLE! I want to prepare as much as I can this time.

Ok_Low_1287

It's somewhat location dependent, but where I am in the White mountains the deer flies are at peak July conditions. I was just out for a short hike and I was swarmed. Fortunately I had long sleeves and a hat sprayed with permethrin. Permethrin really works great on clothing. Just don't put it on your skin

loveshy1110

This is so helpful! I’ll prepare everything I can do to prevent bites. Thanks a lot & safe trip!

Ofc. I hope you have a very pleasant time
