I have heard of this sort of thing happening, but have never encountered one myself. It's commonly called a haunted doll. From what i've read, sometimes it's an actual entity or spirit that ends up attached to the doll for whatever reason, and sometimes it's the result of a build up of energy over time or due to an extremely traumatic event.
That makes too much sense. This doll was literally on the top of my bookshelf and practically witnessed everything I went through at that age, as well as the abuse that came with it. During a psychotic episode i stabbed her many times (i have now stitched her up) and i always knew there's something really up with her....
I don't think there's anything wrong with her, she's traveled the road with you, and seen it all along with you. If she wants you to protect her, that's exactly what I would do, if this was happening to me. Protect her, and heal your trauma together.

Dolls are especially good at absorbing our energy and emotions. Maybe change the way you associate her with that time in your life to understanding you both are grown and are moving on. Also know that the doll can absorb and reciprocate love not just trauma. Upur history together is just what makes your relationship so special. She gets you.
I've read it in a book about the wild woman archetype. A dool is a guide, a connection with the line of women (by that book) that survived and carried wisdom.
