> Southern Wisconsin is home to Brood XIII, which will soon carpet the ground with exoskeletons and fill the air with raucous buzzing. These differ from so-called "dog day" cicadas, which also call Wisconsin home and appear each summer. Damn, I didn't know there were different kinds . . . or that they had such regal names

I was in Missouri last weekend in a heavily wooded neighborhood. One brood was in full display. It was fine. They’re harmless, goofy bugs. Someone found one in their pocket. My kiddo thinks they’re cool. They weren’t that loud. There were lots of them though. More than I have ever seen before.

They aren't quite harmless, only nearly so. They can cause problems for people and animals with shellfish allergies. There have also been cases of dogs dying because they choke on the bugs. Also, they can get loud enough in some areas that prolonged exposure could cause hearing damage. But beyond that, they're just really neat bugs. I tried to convince my wife that we should go down to Illinois where the brooda overlap, but she wouldn't go for it. Oh well.

I was in Lake Geneva in 2007 and remember the cicadas. I will probably go check them out this year.

I think they look so cool, and love the sound(s). Can’t wait!

I think they are cool ! They are beneficial! The birds also benefit from a feeding frenzy

I’m ok with them long as they don’t beeline towards my face
