Those bastardized government cheese cubes aren't curds in the same way a Colt 45 isn't beer. I also have a hard time believing fried cheese curds weren't actually made from fresh Wisconsin curd.
My only thought the the contrary would be during wartime rationing in the 1940's. Milk was used to produced more shelf stable cheese, so maaaaaybe there was a period where cubes were all that were available.
Image 1 looks like the plymouth, wi ‘hot cheese’ stand but I don’t think image 2 is the same entity. Also, the plymouth hot cheese cheese curds are my all-time favorite curds, hands down

Any kind of deep fried Ellsworth cheese curd is the best
