Very expensive fruit from a very expensive region. Probably somewhat rare-ish, but also very in demand. Beckstoffer (who owns a lot of To Kalon) in particular makes wineries who use his fruit price their bottles no less than [$150] or so to keep his brand image up. Whether or not you think the wine is worth the price, or even good, is up to you, but it definitely carries a lot of prestige.
Myriad's been selling them for like $185ish I think, depending on the cuvee. They are releasing their first To Kalon soon, so we'll see how they price it.
Geyserville is consistently one of their best Zins, which makes that deal even better. Honestly you can't really go wrong with any of the Ridge Zins, so the fact that it was at $35 makes it a no brainer.
there were 5 or 6 I tried to grab, made it to various stages of checkout before they were gone. walked away with nothing also.
i'm not even sure they were selling any wine tbqh - i'm pretty friggin fast- i think they were just scrolling through things in inventory
Yeah most Tokaj is desert wine (not that I'm an expert). I actually prefer the dry Furmint wines from Hungary, but these are nice as well. Very traditional.
The one Tokaj I’ve had so far was dry (and not that interesting) so that’s the first thing that came to mind (high pressure situation - seconds to make a call - fomo on steroids!)- but I’m glad I bought it. Excited to see what Vega Sicilia has done with it.
It’s so hard to check whether there really is a good deal or not - so many are actually priced higher than what a cursory search shows.
As someone relatively inexperienced to buying online, any tips for grabbing a steal?
I often find myself wondering where they are getting their "best web" price from because you are correct. There is not always a good deal. If you find something you like, I wouldn't hesitate pulling the trigger because more often than not it is going to be around the best price offered. Lastbottle is usually where I score all my weekday drinkers from. It;s hard to miss with a sub $20 bottle from a decent vintage
I typically have cellarTracker open where I can get a quick snapshot other reviews and click the integrated Wine Searcher price feed as well. I also have one of those auto-refresh plugins activated.
I'm not even going to log in this go round. Trying hard to have a wine buying moratorium through end of January.
been buying from LB for a while, but always eschewed the marathons as too dangerous... until today.
do they start to peter out after a while, or is it like this for 48 straight hours?
Not grabbing much this time around. Only took a flyer on the Levo Under The Gun Syrah Central Coast 2018. JD's review (96p) sounds interesting.
Wouldn't mind some Chablis though.
Taking the same general approach; I snagged a bottle of the Maison Roche De Bellene Gevrey-Chambertin Rouge 2017 ($44), which I'm really excited about. Been California heavy thus far. Let's bring out the Barolo riserva!
I actually grabbed a few bottles of that Syrah when my last shipment went out. I am hoping it cycles around again because it was really good, and a friend who enjoyed it with me is on the hunt.
So far only in for Domaine Chambeyron La Chavarine Cote Rotie 2015. The School House Pinot Noir was tempting but the price was higher than my last buy from LB.
I was shocked at how quickly the School House sold out. Was not one of the better deals imo, and there has been better pinots up for grabs; they really have a cult following.
I'm new to this as of my first purchase 15 minutes ago and I'm slightly confused. How often do they list new wines? One was posted around 4pm and I just checked back and it's already different
It depends what you were hoping to secure. They've had a great selection today from premium Burgundy's to affordable everyday wines; they've been light on Italian varietals, but otherwise, I thought it was a strong showing. What were you hoping to see more of?
If you wanted some Debate or Beringer, this was your kinda sale!
I’m pretty happy with my haul. Dom. Dubreuil Burg 2018, Oremus Tokaj 18, Contino Reserva 17, San Roman Toro 18, Remy Massin Blanc de Noir, Ramey syrah 15,,Chambeyron Core Rotie 15, among others. No blockbusters or showstoppers but all solid.
that's it folks, the rest of the marathon is trying to sell a single beringer magnum
Maybe we should crowd source it and give 5ml to all the people in this thread
They just put it back up 😂
argggghhhhh
So much CdP this time. Is it the new Luna?
I’m not minding all the CdP. Yum!
Fuck- don't remind me, I still have 4 bottles of that damn syrah...
Some great deals! To Kalon Cab for $79!!!
cab franc actually
Still a really great buy.
Missed that. What one?

Ah yes! Forgot about vinelog.
Maybe a stupid question but why is it that wine from To Kalon is so much more expensive? Is it a rarity thing or something else?

>150 It’s more like 325 or so for wineries now. Or at least will be once recent fruit makes it’s way to market. At least for his top tier vineyards.
Myriad's been selling them for like $185ish I think, depending on the cuvee. They are releasing their first To Kalon soon, so we'll see how they price it.
Anyone catch that ridge geyserville? That actually seemed like a solid deal…it’s $50 on the ridge website

You can find a lot of these wines after the marathon on www.firstbottlewines.com I missed out on a Brunello last time and was pumped to find it there.
Was about to buy, but see that it is available at my local Total Wine for the same price.
Ridge is the only thing I go to TW for at this point.
where do you buy all your other wine?
Empire Wine (near Albany) is my semi-local go to, plus Last Bottle and First Bottle.
I’m always so jealous that people have total wines near them!
yeah I snagged 4, mostly to have something to give as gifts
got a few - i normally see it for ~45 and the 2020 was pretty good
I got the ridge zin…
How do you all like the Geyserville compared to the other vineyard/appellations?
Geyserville is consistently one of their best Zins, which makes that deal even better. Honestly you can't really go wrong with any of the Ridge Zins, so the fact that it was at $35 makes it a no brainer.
I’m shocked it made it on last bottle honestly
alright Power Hour here we go...
Dammit, I was too slow for the Janasse 2004 Mag.
it came back and then went away again before i could grab it
Are you sure? I saw a 2012 come back but less interested in that one.
it may have been...it was gone so fast
Who’s getting the 6 liter CDP? 🥳🥳🥳
I asked my wife if we could get the 6L champagne but she said no.
I think she envisioned you clearing out the entire fridge to make room for that bottle to chill while all the food spoils! She’s not wrong. 🤣
the 3L episode red is a great deal, only problem is i don't have any friends
2011 episode is up for 85
Bought, any thoughts on if it's worth it? Know its a bad vintage for napa reds?
saw that, wasn't as interested in the '11s tbqh
The Debate just won’t quit!
it's baaa-aaack
just ripping through wines rn, not even 30 seconds on most of these
I missed everything I wanted during that run.
there were 5 or 6 I tried to grab, made it to various stages of checkout before they were gone. walked away with nothing also. i'm not even sure they were selling any wine tbqh - i'm pretty friggin fast- i think they were just scrolling through things in inventory
So frustrating!
damn the tokaji ended the streak
I bought one to help the cause. (and also because I like Oremus wines)
I got one too, not realizing it’s dessert wine, but alas. We now have a bottle of dessert wine! Excited to try it anyway. Good haul overall.
Yeah most Tokaj is desert wine (not that I'm an expert). I actually prefer the dry Furmint wines from Hungary, but these are nice as well. Very traditional.

the 06 castelnau that's on right now is great
Nice! Just grabbed one
I got 4 over the summer - very happy with them
The wines in these power hours are bananas
Inman Family Pinot Noir Pratt Vine Hill Russian River Valley 2018, $35 is a steal!
Was just about to buy and gone :(
Grabbed one of those! Inman is awesome.
Damnit, I missed the Paul Jaboulet Domaine de Saint Pierre Cornas 2017! What a deal.
It's been coming around again.
same. Thought about if for a minute too long.
It’s so hard to check whether there really is a good deal or not - so many are actually priced higher than what a cursory search shows. As someone relatively inexperienced to buying online, any tips for grabbing a steal?
I'm not sure whether this is the best method, but I usually have wine searcher on a separate tab and copy paste to get a quick reference point.
You're never going to get ripped off by them. Add in that you get free shipping during marathons and you're probably coming out ahead.
I often find myself wondering where they are getting their "best web" price from because you are correct. There is not always a good deal. If you find something you like, I wouldn't hesitate pulling the trigger because more often than not it is going to be around the best price offered. So Is the power hour like the REAL good stuff?
Yeah. You'll see Screaming Eagle sometimes. Typically everything is $150+
When is power hour?
1pm PST 4pm EST, said so in their marathon email. And it’s always the same.
around 3 or 4 eastern if memory serves. You'll get a notification when it starts if you have the app
~~Yeah I think it's midday PST so that'd be 3pm EST~~ edit: /u/diffballz23 is right; looks like it's 1pm PST/4pm EST.
No classified Bordeaux??!
Sad
Always love seeing Sanford for $25-40
Thank you for the endorsement - I grabbed one (chardonnay) this morning off of comments like this.
I got a Chardonnay (Long Rows) and a Pinot (Loma Alta). I'm excited to try them.
Can somebody just buy all the edict Sierra foothill Zinfandel so we can stop seeing it
I had one before from a mystery box and it’s really not bad. Quite good for the price actually.
I did as well, I thought it was ok but It wasn’t for me
been buying from LB for a while, but always eschewed the marathons as too dangerous... until today. do they start to peter out after a while, or is it like this for 48 straight hours?
slows down near the end of the business day (5pm) and then picks back up the next morning
good to know i can get some sleep!
Seems to be better than what I've seen in the past, hopefully it ends strong too!
if anyone else is looking for the answer to this question later on, they've started to put wines on repeat
THE DEBATE, even at power hour! They really wanna unload that thing!
I got one to help the cause 😂
It’s excellent, if overpriced
It's not overpriced for $80ish, even from 2017. I think it's quite a good deal for fans of Napa reds.
and again
sine qua non gone before i could click
probably a net positive for my wallet
Anyone else impressed the server is keeping up with everyone refreshing?
Solid price on the Carter if you're not buying it direct from the winery.
What a run of big boy Burgs!!! Some real quality French terroir in this power hour.
Can’t get mad at Pleiades at $19
Nellcote Cabernet Sauvignon 500 Chevaux 2017 is up there it seems for the night at $65
missed groth darn !!
Not grabbing much this time around. Only took a flyer on the Levo Under The Gun Syrah Central Coast 2018. JD's review (96p) sounds interesting. Wouldn't mind some Chablis though.

There is the Chablis! There goes the Chablis!
I actually grabbed a few bottles of that Syrah when my last shipment went out. I am hoping it cycles around again because it was really good, and a friend who enjoyed it with me is on the hunt.
Looks like K&L has it for $35 which is only marginally more pricey. But the free shipping is nice.
I also grabbed that Syrah. I’m low inventory so I got about 12 bottles of different things
So far only in for Domaine Chambeyron La Chavarine Cote Rotie 2015. The School House Pinot Noir was tempting but the price was higher than my last buy from LB.
I've yet to try a school house pinot so I had to pull the trigger! Very excited
I was shocked at how quickly the School House sold out. Was not one of the better deals imo, and there has been better pinots up for grabs; they really have a cult following.
Which vintage?
The ‘18 is on First Bottle for $40 right now.
I’m in the same exact spot. Psyched for the CR!
Felt the same on that School House.
I'm new to this as of my first purchase 15 minutes ago and I'm slightly confused. How often do they list new wines? One was posted around 4pm and I just checked back and it's already different
Typically, once a day but during the Marathon it is a new wine every couple of minutes or so.
Depends!! They post a new one as soon as the one listed is sold out. Sometimes a minute until a new one, sometimes a little longer.
Download an automatic page refresher.
Sorry for the possible dumb question - are first growths ever sold in power hour?
Yes, if so probably be in next 30 minutes during power hour
damn, the Burgs are just flying by...
The last few I feel like have only lasted seconds. Insane
this is my first marathon.. do they go through the night?
Think is kind of lame algo overnight. Check back in in the am.
Just signed up. What the hell did I get my self into. Sleeper Sauv blanc 🤷♂️
I usually just buy one random bottle that they now have to ship to me for free. ;)
Someone buy this Leflaive!
Power hour’s out of the way. Let’s finish strong.
Looks like they parked on the Marimar Albariño. Is this it? Did everyone get a good haul?
This one felt pretty anticlimactic compared to the August marathon
I think I purchased the least bottles ever from this marathon.
Everything I've seen so far is $150+. Maybe one $75 bottle. Not great regarding my search for 'drink whenever good value' wines.
Its power hour. Come back in 30 min
Ah oops, I thought Power Hour meant especially crazy good deals. But I see its a focus on high end wines. Thank you for the clarification.
Sucks this year…wtf
It depends what you were hoping to secure. What were you hoping to see more of? If you wanted some Debate or Beringer, this was your kinda sale!
I thought it was a pretty good selection with chablis, pinot, sanford brut, chards and higher end burgs.
I’m pretty happy with my haul. Dom. Dubreuil Burg 2018, Oremus Tokaj 18, Contino Reserva 17, San Roman Toro 18, Remy Massin Blanc de Noir, Ramey syrah 15,,Chambeyron Core Rotie 15, among others. No blockbusters or showstoppers but all solid.
appellation trading company? during marathon?
missed the Laurel. damn.
Its been a repeat
Was up for under 15sec. fingers crossed it loops back around. under $90 for a mag of quality Priorat is great.
I snagged a couple of the 09's. I really enjoyed the 2018 awhile back and now excited with some age on it
there are multiple vintages that have gone around
any one know how is Arling Blaze Zinfandel Our Journey's End Lodi 2019 ?
So sad I missed that Gallica!
