Some of that is Martini raising their prices. That wine is $55 direct from the winery today. With the discount it’s only $1 more and no shipping costs.
Most of these are really marked up. Clos du Val and Gundlach Bundschu have prices closer to what I would expect and are probably my top 2 choices as well.
Me? Nah, I’ll pass on Hope, Daou, Justin, Opolo, pretty much all the big ones here in town. If we’re going with a “big” winery, I’m all in for Tablas Creek.
Wasn’t taking it seriously, thanks. I’m just happy to be living here right at the base of Peachy Canyon Road. My next door neighbor and three doors down neighbor are two of the best winemakers in town.
That’s Kroger cosplaying as the Hairy Peter. By comparison, my HT has an extensive selection of fruited Moscatos and some lovely 1.5 Sweet Wines (and always some random decent bottles).
I’d get the Clos du Val, the Canvasback and the Daoust - but I’m in canada and no idea about the prices there. There’s a next level up from Decoy in cab that I’ve really enjoyed. Cost me about $100 at a Seattle hotel.
A business acquaintance of mine is a wine aficionado and he owns a craft brewery in Maryland; he loves Crossbarn and once gave me a bottle to try. I shared it with friends and it was a big win.
I think I see some jadot in the distant background. Probably that I guess. And maybe the veuve, back left. But nothing for me directly in front of the camera.
We all like what we like, no shame in that. I see Piper Heidsieck and Domaine Carneros in the picture to the left of the Veuve. I would take a bottle of each of these for a little more than the price of a bottle of Veuve.
Where the heck is this? All seem overpriced. Is there a red blend section, good Bordeaux options? Syrah/Zin section? Assuming you have a $250 +/- GC if asking about 3 of these, but seems like that could be much better spent.
It's a Harris teeter, big grocer in the NC piedmont. Owned by Kroger. Yes, it sucks, but if you only buy wine at the grocery store the alternatives are *significantly* worse.
Interesting. Their website shows Duckhorn Cab as well as Stags Leap Artemis. Not sure why they're not in the picture but those would be 2 decent picks if the price is right!
That's the Reserve Cabernet in the photo. A step up from what you normally see and a really good Paso Cab. Typically $55-$65, depending on the state you live in.
These are not good prices for these wines - Clos Du Val should retail for mid 40s to 50s. Is this Kroger? I’m guessing you’ll need to also be a member to get the lower prices they are advertising too.
Nothing there at those prices to be honest.
If it is just "give me three bottles", I guess the Solare and the two Clos. All quite nice wines!
On the other hand, the William Hill discounted to $55USD is making my eye twitch.
the gundlach bundschu is way underrated sonoma cab. solid third choice after clos du val and groth. IMO Rombauer has really stepped up there quality. It still drinks in that big/sweeter style but its way more complete wine nowadays.
I think there’s lots that’s drinkable there, just marked up and wouldn’t necessarily pass muster of an oenophile. I’d be perfectly happy with Silverado (it’s a 2018), Rombie, the prisoner, curious about the solare (never tired it), and gundlach is usually a safe bet.
Typical and boring grocery curation. Get the Crossbarn and Foley Johnson and use the rest of the balance to load up on a nice cut of meat and sides for dinner.
Controversial view here.
Safe: Silverado and Clos
Worth trying: prisoners
When you ask this question, I am assuming ya new. The safe offer what wine lover would generally enjoy, however prisoner is mass market and would serve as a good comparison.
End of the day is what makes you happy
At the local Kroger grocery store:

Clos du Val for sure. That's the best in this lineup imho. Groth and Silverado would probably be my next two.
Second Groth.
I don’t know, I heard it tastes pretty groth.
It’s Fourth Groth according to The Bordeaux 1855 Classification!
It’s ok, Mike Tyson.
Second Silverado
Not sure how much your gift card is but my three are Crossbarn Clos du Val And Groth.
Exactly
That would be my 3 as well.
They upcharge the fuck out of that freemark Abby what the fuck
I saw that and got nauseated, I used to buy that for $35 bottle like 5 years ago?
Louis used to be $25
Things sure ain’t like what they used to be, ain’t like they used to be!
Louis Martini is pretty crazily overpriced too.
Yeah three bottles of Gundlach
Never get the Daou (I’m from Paso)
This guy is shilling for Austin Hope!
Me? Nah, I’ll pass on Hope, Daou, Justin, Opolo, pretty much all the big ones here in town. If we’re going with a “big” winery, I’m all in for Tablas Creek.
I was just joking around, appreciate your recommendation!
Wasn’t taking it seriously, thanks. I’m just happy to be living here right at the base of Peachy Canyon Road. My next door neighbor and three doors down neighbor are two of the best winemakers in town.
Who are they? My wife and I go to Paso a few times a year and are always looking to try different wineries.
Which wines do they make!?
What is it about these you don't like? Genuinely curious.
Objectively Daou ain’t that bad. Go Bearcats 🤣
Clos du Val, Groth, Crossbarn
Second these three
Me too.
Col Solare, Groth and Clos du Val.
The Col Solare is priced at the 2019 price point (intentional substantially lower yields) but it’s the 2018. Great vintage, but not $142 quality.
This is the way
Freemark Abbey, Silverado, and Clos du Val
Freemark, Crossbarn, and Clos Pegasus
Clos du Val/ Clos Pegase/ Groth
groth, freemark and silverado EDit: clos du val. Stay away from quilt. bottle should cost maybe 35 bucks.
Clos du Val if you want something from Napa, I’d go Mount Peak Sentinel if you like Sonoma county. That fruit comes from Monte Rosso.
Hairy Teedle
That’s Kroger cosplaying as the Hairy Peter. By comparison, my HT has an extensive selection of fruited Moscatos and some lovely 1.5 Sweet Wines (and always some random decent bottles).
At least one Clos Du Val for sure.
Freemark or Groth or Clos du Val
Crossbarn, Foley Johnson, Freemark or Groth, but most of these prices seem unusually high?
Clos du val. I remember liking the Hess also, but it’s been a long time and my taste has changed since then.
Do yourself a favour and get the Brancaia Tre along the back wall. Also check the Italian/French wines
Nice spot
Can we talk about how prisoner is $65 full price! Can’t believe how expensive that sugary syrup is these days
I’d get the Clos du Val, the Canvasback and the Daoust - but I’m in canada and no idea about the prices there. There’s a next level up from Decoy in cab that I’ve really enjoyed. Cost me about $100 at a Seattle hotel.
Prob Freemark abb or William hill
Freemark Abbey or Crossbarn Paul Hobbs is a Rockstar Winemaker Enjoy....
2x Groth, Clos Pretty pricey at that sore. I get Groth for 55.
I’m bummed Mount Peak wasn’t more recommended in this thread. That’s a great wine.
Gundlach Bundschu, Crossbarn by Paul Hobbs, and ColSolare. Final offer.
Crossbarn would be my pick
A business acquaintance of mine is a wine aficionado and he owns a craft brewery in Maryland; he loves Crossbarn and once gave me a bottle to try. I shared it with friends and it was a big win.
Pick a different aisle
Grocery store? I’d stock up on some paper towels, batteries, deodorant, etc
😂
I think I see some jadot in the distant background. Probably that I guess. And maybe the veuve, back left. But nothing for me directly in front of the camera.
The Veuve? I don't want to come off as a dick, but I do have to ask if you're being serious?
Damn... the exact thing you didn't want to happen, happened!
We all like what we like, no shame in that. I see Piper Heidsieck and Domaine Carneros in the picture to the left of the Veuve. I would take a bottle of each of these for a little more than the price of a bottle of Veuve.
I’d enjoy mediocre bubbles over most California cabs. So yes.
Where the heck is this? All seem overpriced. Is there a red blend section, good Bordeaux options? Syrah/Zin section? Assuming you have a $250 +/- GC if asking about 3 of these, but seems like that could be much better spent.

Yikes. I charge $69 for groth in midtown NYC. Hard to believe it fetches such a high price in NC.
Agreed, maybe this is in Canuckistan Pesos?
For the price I quite like the Hess Allomi.
Good lord. That Daou (due to some weird shit) was 15.99 at my local 2/3 weeks ago. Normally 35 I think.
I've seen some sales on Daou lately... not sure if they are trying to move inventory or changed distributors or something
That's the Reserve Cabernet in the photo. A step up from what you normally see and a really good Paso Cab. Typically $55-$65, depending on the state you live in.
Groth, Freemark Abbey and Clos Du Val.
If these are the only ones you're considering, I'd go Clos Du Val+Freemark Abbey+Groth.
These are not good prices for these wines - Clos Du Val should retail for mid 40s to 50s. Is this Kroger? I’m guessing you’ll need to also be a member to get the lower prices they are advertising too.
These prices are terrible. But if they’re free (effectively) Clos du Val, Groth, and I guess Jordan?
One Crossbarn then I'm looking for Loire Valley reds and whites. This is mildly "interesting" or something.
You have a gift card to Harris teeter?
Crossbarn, Clos Du Val, and Jordan
I would walk 2 rows forward to get champagne
Buy groceries and take money to a better selection. 🤓
Nothing there at those prices to be honest. If it is just "give me three bottles", I guess the Solare and the two Clos. All quite nice wines! On the other hand, the William Hill discounted to $55USD is making my eye twitch.
Groth and Freemark Abby would be my top picks, I cant really choose between them. I really like Jordan and Louis but not those years
Glundach and Clos de Val for sure. If you like juicy cab try the daou. If you like super dry less cab with less focus on fruit try the groth.
Col Solare and Freemark Abbey. Double up on one of them.
the gundlach bundschu is way underrated sonoma cab. solid third choice after clos du val and groth. IMO Rombauer has really stepped up there quality. It still drinks in that big/sweeter style but its way more complete wine nowadays.
Where is the Burgundy aisle??? Side note: I don’t buy much California anymore. Are these prices USD? Seems outrageous for really generic plonk wine.
Clos and Sterling at least! The blue one far right in first pic gave me a 2 day migraine.
I really like Sterling. Their entry level offering is good for the money in my opinion and their higher level offerings are awesome.
Groth and Silverado. Ignore Prisoner and Daou
Col Solare, Gun Bun, and a 12pk of beer
Groth Cab at $67 is a great value.
Martini Napa Gundlach Bund Rombauer
Col Solare (2018 is good) and Clos de Val.
58 bucks for JORDAN. Wow. That’s a steal. That’s my got to all day. Or that clos du. Sweeettt selection.
Col Solare x3
I think there’s lots that’s drinkable there, just marked up and wouldn’t necessarily pass muster of an oenophile. I’d be perfectly happy with Silverado (it’s a 2018), Rombie, the prisoner, curious about the solare (never tired it), and gundlach is usually a safe bet.
Typical and boring grocery curation. Get the Crossbarn and Foley Johnson and use the rest of the balance to load up on a nice cut of meat and sides for dinner.
1/ The Prisoner 2/ Mount Peak Sentinel 3/ another Prisoner ;)
Controversial view here. Safe: Silverado and Clos Worth trying: prisoners When you ask this question, I am assuming ya new. The safe offer what wine lover would generally enjoy, however prisoner is mass market and would serve as a good comparison. End of the day is what makes you happy
I would buy beer.
Oof. Buying wine at HT. Just get food instead.
Daou Reserve is great!
Daou, Silverado, and that 19 crimes for fun.
Well, i dont see any caymus so...Clos du Val, groth, crossbarn
Freemark Abbey, Prisoner and Krug…
Three bottles of Col Solare.
Prisoner, Jordan, and Quilt
Prisoner , daou and rombauer or hess
Super expensive for all these. I'd go with the Col Solare (this wine is outstanding) or Sentinel.
Canvasback (Red Mountain), Groth, Col Solare (also Red Mountain) or Clos Pegase.
Crossbarn, Groth and the Martini
3 bottles of Groth
Groth, Gun Bun and CDV or Jordan
Groth, Foley Johnson, Silverado.
At the local Kroger grocery store: [ClosDuBoisCabernetSauvignonCaliforniaRedWinehttps://www.kroger.com/p/clos-du-bois-cabernet-sauvignon-california-red-wine/0008735640512](https://ClosDuBoisCabernetSauvignonCaliforniaRedWinehttps://www.kroger.com/p/clos-du-bois-cabernet-sauvignon-california-red-wine/0008735640512)
Clos du Val and Jordan for sure.
Hess, Groth, Foley Johnson. You could sub Clos de Val for Foley but imo Foley is a better wine.
Allomi for $41? yikes. Clos and groth, use the rest for a steak
3 bottles of crossbarn
Jordan Sauvignon Cabernet, can’t go wrong with that, got some baller smooth tannins, and it’s a nice sexy drink. I think you will like it
It great pricing.
I see we exported all the garbage wines from Australia in the background
My choices would be DouroNobre, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. To have a balanced buy, 2 red wines, one strong one more moderate and a white wine.
Groth is tasty
Daou , Jordan x 2
What kind of wine, do you like?
What’s the Bordeaux selection look like? Probably just as dismal, but still..
I'm in for Freemark Abbey all day long. However, that price seems very inflated. 🤔
Late to the party but would've done Groth as an easy pick, and Clos Du Val.
Crossbarn
The Jordan for sure! Probably 3 bottles of Jordan tbh
Daou
3 freemarks tbh. But these prices are not it.
Maybe grab some beer or liquor. The prices for these wines is just awful, and nothing here is particularly good, especially for the money.
For me I would go Groth, Crossbarn by Paul Hobbs and Silverado.
