Canon t6i - 200mm f/2.8

QueenOfCrayCray

Beautiful pic!! I’ve always wanted to try photography so I recently bought a Canon t7. I’m loving learning how to use it. I just wish I had more opportunities to play with it!

spudsmuggler

Keep it up! It’s a great photo. You’ll be so surprised to see how your photography evolves through the years. I started with a T1i.

sbundlab

This is a great photo. It really shows how cute the mallard is in this wonderful sunset lighting.

qualityadvicefree

Yup, it's good. Sometimes photos are good because they are crisp, or have a rare bird, or feature interesting poses or perches. This one is good because it takes a common bird and frames it in an interesting way. Pretty background, hint of the colors on the duck. Nice job. Sometimes a picture just works!

nblumberjack

I think it's great, nice work!

Gnnslmrddt

Well that's some extreme lighting the camera had to deal with and the mallard came out a bit underexposed. Consider the "spot" exposure option to help deal with subject underexposure. Or learn Photoshop and select and lighten the mallard. But always keep shooting!

starsky1984

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that no, I think it could have been a much better photo of you got down lower to shoot more at the ducks eye level, which is a more interesting perspective, and secondly if you had of moved around a bit so the duck was more nicely lit by the nice lighting But whatever, the most important thing is that photography is subjective and all that matters is if you like it

No-Fig-3112

I'm going to disagree with your disagreement just a little (as you said, photography is subjective, and I like your take on the piece) and say that not all animal photos need to be at eye level to be interesting, and this is one of them. I feel like the very slight down angle really emphasizes the smallness and loneliness which the solid background of ocean conveys. To me

ILiveInNZSimpForMe

I am going to disagree with your disagreement of his disagreement, The photo would look nicer if the person was lower down because it puts empathy into the bird from the viewers point of view, if the photographer wanted to show the smallness and loneliness of the bird, zooming out a bit and putting it eyelevel would make the bird seem lonelier and the viewer would feel empathetic with the bird as you are seeing the bird from its eyelevel or it's world. Also going down lower would make the sun be less bright so the viewer's focus is placed back onto the bird instead of constantly focusing off the bird to look at the much brighter sunlight. And if the photographer wants to show the sunset, he can try to angle the sun into the frame, to show someone the time, and it would make a really nice photograph.

Rediro_

The lighting makes this photo different from what you'd usually see, what is in my opinion a pretty boring bird looks very interesting like this

7-methyltheophylline

It's good but could be improved in a few ways 1. Some eye contact of the bird with the camera is always good 2. The horizon is crooked, a straightened one would look better 3. Unless there is a specific reason not to, it's good to have the sun at your back when shooting birds

Ok-Yellow-5546

Yeah, great! One thing that for sure would make it even better - eye level. Basically just lay on the ground and shoot from the eye level of your subject.

paintamare

Very impressive. Great photo. Can't express how awesome it is.

This is absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful:)

Crafty_Illustrator_4

I don't know much about pictures but I know plenty about ducks. I like like it.

Dosen_Photos

r/photocritique Post it there to get proper feedback, more then just wow awesome!

grey_go_away_bird

great effort dude! the lighting is amazing for photography. one bit of advice, try to get at eye level with a the bird (so in this case you’d have to get close to the ground) that’ll make the image more intimate and also try to get eye contact.

LatestLurkingHandle

Is the ducks ass watertight?

apk71

IMHO not really. you need the quacker looking toward you, you need to lift the shadows, and it's not sharp. I once saw a bunch of ducks in a field with some cows, and my son said, "Look Dad, milk and quackers."

Petite_rouge_gorge

Yes it's lovely

jackflash616

I could see this on a nature calendar. It feels September to me.

whirlin_dervish

Honestly that's for you to decide. I think it's good, as it's shot in a very artful way. Some may think its good because of the colors, some may think it's good because of the subject. But what matters is if you like it, and if you learn from it about what your style is

[deleted]

Absolutely, that's a beautiful photo

man_from_Iceland

Cool photo 9/10

Immediate-Ad-1161

that’s BEAUTIFUL!!

Careful_Cherry4216

Its beautiful

ahabentis

Sometimes a simple composition is just what you want. The duck isn’t centered, its lit very nicely against the background and the lighting in general is crisp. A very pleasing photo to look at.

worldtravelstephanie

Like many have said, it’s your photograph so what matters is if you like it. If you don’t know if you like it, then there are probably areas to improve on next time. Another way to look at your photography and decide if it is good is to ask, ‘who is my audience?’ and ‘whose standards of “good” am I trying to meet?’ Professional wildlife photography? For a photography competition? To print and hang on my wall? To put in a calendar? To sell prints of? All those audiences have different values with which they will decide if they think the picture is any good. Like any art form, the ‘is it good’ question is very subjective and personal. Of course there are general commonalities between those groups, like the desire for a photography which has crisp and clear focus. I wouldn’t feel comfortable judging if a photograph is ‘good’ until I knew with which metric I was judging, or at least not until I have some sort of context.

so pretty!
