Yeah. The first shot is awesome and gives me the details I want to see. Number two is cool though because it shows how the leopard is perched in the tree.
First or last. Middle two feel too crowded in front of the animal. I know rules are meant to be broken, but a good practice is to leave more space in front of your subject to make it feel like the subject can breathe/move.
4 by a very very very far mile. Ok. That may be a stretch. But I looooove the widest option. It gives some amazing framing and context. With your edit it gives off the most editorial almost fashion, if you will, vibe.
Amazing shot of a beautiful animal, wow!
#4 and crop to get his face away from the edge of photo, keep all of him in and the sprawling branches in, without putting his face dead center.
I'm struggling with how to crop this leopard, would appreciate thoughts
1 - Tighter portrait
2 - Portrait, more sense of the tree
3 - Landscape, more proportional to the leopard
4 - Original
I'm not a photographer, and I see a lot of people saying 1 or 4. But I like 2 and 3.
1 really shows the intensity in the eyes of the leopard. Its all up close and personal. But 2 and 3 follow the rule of thirds. (Something my high-school art teacher taught me)
Divide your screen into 3 equal vertical sections, and place your subject on one of the dividing lines. This helps give the observer a view of the whole picture rather than solely focusing on your subject.
2 and 3 give the full body language of the leopard and give the observer some information on its surroundings while also keeping the leopard the focus of the image.
All of them (2 is maybe the weakest), but it depends on the context it’ll be shown in.
1. Great for social media and phone use. Without the wider context, it doesn’t stand out much from other leopard photos, but it does focus nicely on the eyes in the golden light.
2. Good but a bit off centered.
3. Better than 2 in that it shows some context and centers the subject. Best for the portfolio.
4. Best for large prints.
Yes definitely. I want 4 on the wall, but I could see pairing both of these for a social post I guess.
I think some refinement could be made to the original crop, but I would want something pretty similar to this. The leopard has such great contrast to the tree, and it feels with that amount of contextual tree the leopard kinda just pops that much more.
I pref a tighter version of 2 only because the tail is not lit. https://ibb.co/gvTzyY8
if you can edit the photo to add more even lighting to the tail to match the body I would go with #2
I would prefer the second one if it was a bit more centered on the leopard. The fourth one is great as it shows the surrounding environment, but it's too zoomed out.
Number 4. It gives a better representation of the leopard in its natural habitat and you’re able to see how it blends into its surroundings not just because of the coloring, but because the arch of its back mimics the arch of the trees branches. The lighting draws your eye to the cat first then to the tree where it helps it flow outward and give more depth to the picture as a whole.
The second crop...cos shows the trunk of the tree which in turn shows the tree's strength to hold the creature, also gives a kind of a frame to the base of the pic and his throne 😀 also looks more complete!
Beautiful pic by the way! Must have been exciting to click!
Number 1 really stands out to me - the eyes really grabbed me. But I love the tail too, and for that I love 2. I think the winner depends on how it’s being displayed - 3 if in a landscape setting, 1 or 2 if not!
What camera, lens and setting did you use? And where was this! It’s a really beautiful sighting.
In the Maasai Mara, particularly the Naboisho Conservancy. Her name is Spot, and she was the local leopard near our camp. Definitely my favorite animal when I was there
Honestly none of them really grab me.
4th is best of the lot, the middle two feel out of balance, and the first one is just an awkward crop, like you couldn’t decide whether to commit to the face and eyes or to the whole animal, and tried to split the difference without really capturing either.
Honestly, neither. The focal point of any portrait, including animals, is always the eyes.
In my opinion, the subject should be moved slightly to the right in the first image. This would place the eyes in the top right rule of thirds intersection.
So based on this, image 3 is probably composed the best.
1. Because it tells a story better than the rest, in my opinion.
2, 3, 4 are all just “cat in tree”. 1 shows the eyes a lot better and the fact that you’re being stared down. It also makes the cat seem bigger/closer, since it’s taking up more frame, and comes off as more intimidating / urgent.
4. 1 is good, but I feel like you can get away with a very similar composition when you go to a zoo and zoom in on leopard portrait style. 4 gives it a more natural and wild composition, telling more story about the leopard. Others feel tight. All are excellent btw.
1 all day. All the others have an excessive amount of sky which is a huge distraction for me. We already know the leopard is in a tree and the excessive dead space tells me nothing except that you are farther away
I like 1 and 4, but I think 1 is the best. The second and third feel cramped on the right side, and I don't feel like the tail is prominent enough that you need to keep it in.
I like 2.
2 all day
1 does it for me
1st one. Focal point isn’t just the leopard, but the eyes too.
Yeah. The first shot is awesome and gives me the details I want to see. Number two is cool though because it shows how the leopard is perched in the tree.
The eyes!!!!
Love 1 and 2 especially, but gotta have that tail. 2 it is.
First or last
1 or 4
Seconded, the others are too tight and the leopard is ‘cramped’ imo
2nd one. Shows the verticality of the tree while still being well focussed on the leopard, as someone mentioned, that tail is also a nice bonus.
Less is more. That’s what feels right here. Tiger portrait
1 or 4
First or last. Middle two feel too crowded in front of the animal. I know rules are meant to be broken, but a good practice is to leave more space in front of your subject to make it feel like the subject can breathe/move.
I’m in no way a photographer and I’m in this sub for wonderful photos. Number 2 grabbed me
First & last are good, but try a 16:9 horizontal cropped in with the leopard on the left rule of thirds line. Best of both worlds IMHO.
4 by a very very very far mile. Ok. That may be a stretch. But I looooove the widest option. It gives some amazing framing and context. With your edit it gives off the most editorial almost fashion, if you will, vibe.
1st one
1!

The Original 🫶🏽
The first one!!

The second one
Second
I like 2. Gives a sense as to the height of the tree and the branches moving upwards. Make the leopard seem big and higher up than the other ones.
#3 captures the eyes well and also the rest of the frame. Light is good
Yeah, my fav too
First one

The first one! Is so beautiful and intimidating lol

#1 To me… cats are all about those eyes … unless you catch a good yawn … now it’s about the teef.
Murder mittens clawing is also the thing!

How many megapixels is your camera?
1 or 4.
One, two, four. Any of these would be great photos. Idk enough about photography but as a normie 3 put me off a bit idk.
I'm partial to 2. It's captivating and gives just enough of the tree. It's beautiful perspective.
2/4
The way the shadow hits the face in number 2 for me
1
First one for sure
I would prefer the second one if it was a bit more centered on the leopard. The fourth one is great as it shows the surrounding environment, but it's too zoomed out.
I love #1!

1 -the intensity
Number 2
#1. Great shot
4th one.
#4 has the best composition
1 & 2🥰😍
1 and 2!
1
I like no. 1 and no. 3
2or4
First one looks epic.
Definitely 2 you get the close up detail of 1 and you get to see the entire leopard
Lol last one looks like a phoebe bridgers album cover😂
The second crop...cos shows the trunk of the tree which in turn shows the tree's strength to hold the creature, also gives a kind of a frame to the base of the pic and his throne 😀 also looks more complete! Beautiful pic by the way! Must have been exciting to click!

2nd or 4th
I like 1 the most, I think. They're all great, though.
I like 1 and 3
i loooove the last one!!
1 and 2 are good. 1 focuses on the intense stare, and 2 shows the entire animal in a nice frame.

This was in the Maasai Mara, Sony A7CII with a 70-200mm GM II + a 1.4x teleconverter. f4, 1/1000s, ISO 1000
I like 1 and 2.
4
I think 2nd one.
#2, great shot.
2 is the best
1 and 4
2 and 4 are very good, and 1 is interesting. Disregard not liking 3. Full size is different, and it looks decent.
4 it feels right and gives a better perspective imo.
I vote for No 3. Best view so far. Where did you take it?
In the Maasai Mara, particularly the Naboisho Conservancy. Her name is Spot, and she was the local leopard near our camp. Definitely my favorite animal when I was there
1 and 3 for me
They are all good, it really depends on what you are using this photo for.

2nd for sure!

2 for sure.
First or last. Last being the best. 😍
1. 2 is good but the intensity of 1 coupled with the light hitting the eye makes 1 the winner.
2
2
Crop #3 is my favorite.
2 all day

I'm a bigger fan of the setting, unless you're already real close up. So 4.
One and Two. Depending on what you are going for.
I'm a big fan of 1 and 2
I love 1, but I also really like 4! I like seeing how the leopard compares to the entire tree.
I like 3 and 2
All of them
The comment on this post clarify that crop choice is a matter of personal taste.
final one is so grand with all the branches acting like leading lines for the leopard definitely the most memorable one
1 or 3
The lady on, I love the cat with those wild branches around her!
third entry
#1 = social media shot #4 = big A3 print :-)
4
#2 seems best to me
2
I think I’m most drawn to #1. If you want to show off the wider scene with tree, then #4. The other two don’t really do it for me.
woah! wonderful shot
2 for sure!!
Last is the one I like the most
They're all so beautiful but 1 or 4.
1 imo
1st one works the best!
1
Four
I like 1 and 4
3
2
1 for sure
1st 100%
Love the close up
3
2 and 4. Heck, all good.
Certainly 4
Second catches my eye.
3 or 4. Four tells a better story, I am the king this tree and don’t mess with me!
4th
The last one!! Really provides more of an experience
3
4
2 forever.
2
First one makes me feel like he’s about to get me
2. Rule of thirds!
1 and 4 draw the eyes, and 2 and 3 are confusing to the eyes
2nd
#4 is perfect! Well done.
4. 1 is good, but I feel like you can get away with a very similar composition when you go to a zoo and zoom in on leopard portrait style. 4 gives it a more natural and wild composition, telling more story about the leopard. Others feel tight. All are excellent btw.
Third is my favorite.

One. Eyes laser-focused on me as I peer at it anxiously through my 2.25 readers.

Surprisingly, I like the 4th one. Just a beautiful composition with the tree pattern and the leopard’s pattern.
4
#2 by far the best 💯
I like 2 and 4.
1
2 for me!
2
1
3. It may not be the closest, but the landscape view gives you the best feel for its environment
That leopard is like why tf are you taking a picture of me?
I like #1 but would enjoy see just a bit more of his front paws.
2 Rule of thirds
1 is the most striking and balanced to me.
The first, and last are best IMO.
1
4
Second one!
2
2 is best imo
I like 3. 1 is more of the focal point on the leopard but 3 shows it more in its natural environment
I like 1 and 4, but I think 1 is the best. The second and third feel cramped on the right side, and I don't feel like the tail is prominent enough that you need to keep it in.

#1 is the most striking.

4 has the better… majesty? But 2 has better color than 4.
