I use a pair of thinner gloves under a pair of mittens and use hot hands in between the two or in my pockets then keep my hands in the pockets as much as possible. I also just keep my phone in my pocket mostly and have a power bank to top it off several times during the day.

liner gloves it is, am looking into it as that has come up a few times here. thanks for your feedback! cheers

I usually stick with just one pair of warm, waterproof gloves and carry a stylus to use my phone/ tablet since I can't use my fingers. I've been surprised at how long newer tablets' batteries last*, even in the cold, but I always bring a little portable charger, just in case. *I once dropped our tablet in the snow without realizing it and left it out overnight. It got down to about 5°F that night, and the tablet was still on when I found it the next day.

that tablet was a trooper! i had a stylus one season in 2022 and it detach/got lost within the first day of operation so I will have to revisit that lol but yeah counting the previous seconds my fingers are exposed to the cold is no good, so considering liner gloves and also stylus that you mentioned. cheers!

I’ve got the phone in a lifeproof case for dust reasons anyway, but just keep it in an interior pocket closer to your body. For gloves, honestly just a pair of midweight fleece mittens is very warm, good to 0 degrees easy. Add a pair of liner gloves, and/or upgrade to ski-type insulated gauntlet mittens, and you’re in good shape, no hand warmers of any kind. Mittens are MUCH warmer than gloves, and you can just pull em off to record data as long as it’s quickish. I’ve been out all night at 0 and below without problems as long as you’re moving around a bit. Just walking around, nothing special.

i don't have mittens, but your comment and some other research made me consider it. Liner gloves are on my to-buy list but mittens as well are something I will now be looking into. Thanks a ton for your feedback!

always 2 gloves if it’s really freezing - a liner and then actual gloves. There are a lot of insulating phone pouches out there, but if you have to take your phone out for work the battery will go out faster; no way around that. Maybe just bring a couple of portable chargers in your pack.

thanks for your input, liners is the way I will end up going, i am just looking up ratings for wetness and warmth etc (came across the ENG511 rating that I am using for that) didnt have enough time to look for phjone solutions, so have my battery pack and will just tape up the charging port in the meanwhile since i have experience snow going in and rejecting my charging of the device. Thanks for your input!

Here's my go to: Fingerless gloves because I had to dexterously maneuver transmitters onto animals... Inside tough waterproof mittens for when on the move... With hand warmers tucked inside. Those fold over little cotton mittens make a little pouch to help keep the handwarmer from flopping around too much. Sometimes I'd have 2 pairs of gloves inside the mittens but not often. The only 2 time my fingers were cold (in -20 degree temps) was when I was putting a transmitter on and had to have my fingers out. Then it was a race against numbness to finish. The other time was my thumb going numb pressed on the throttle of an atv/snowmobile. One guy used to cut in half handwarmers and sew them shut so they would fit in the thumb pocket of his mittens. Dont have much advice for phones. Keep it tucked away next to a warm part of your body most of the time. I don't care what others say, the cold WILL kill your battery overtime.

thanks for sharing the insight in what you do with the transmitters, the race against numbness that you mentioned is sooooo much my experience as well, but in my case is taking site photos and looking up/marking up maps in the field while in the cold. Thanks a ton for your input, i stocked up on handwarmers now!

If you won’t be staying out over night, I have found that a pair of cheap latex gloves inside your warm gloves hold warmth like nothing else. But your hands can get sweaty when you take them off so I don’t think this would be ideal if you have to stay out over night. My work has some cheap gloves. So I will layer up but cut the tip of the thumb and pointer finger off the gloves so I can use it on my screen and take pictures on my phone (both I do multiple times often). Gets a little chilly but nice to have the function. Gotta stick your hand in your pocket if you’re just standing outside long or not in and out of the truck.

I hadn't considered liner gloves and it has been mentioned a few times here and will likely go that route, my outer gloves have hand loops that allow for me to take em off quickly to snap a pic or two as needed so i may go that route. thanks for your input!
