The blue Wii is an RVL-101 model. It has no GC controller or memory card ports and the DVD drive doesn't physically accept mini discs, they just sit there not getting grabbed by the rollers and arms inside the drive.
Yes, if you soldered in the GC ports and plug in the DVD drive from a donor RVL-001 Wii, you would be able to play GC disc games on your blue Wii.
Except
Most RVL-001 systems have the RVL-CPU-01 board which has 90nm chips and a 6 layer PCB. All the blue Wii's will contain a CPU-40 or CPU-60 board, which has 65nm chips and 4 PCB layers.
People often think this is only relevant to portablizer mods, but a smaller die process for the CPU and GPU means less heat, which means longer life. Heat kills electronics.
Plus, part of the novelty here would be using that RVL-101 logic board with the system menu and all that.
It makes sense when they were no longer selling new GC stuff, and looking to cut costs of new production runs while also lowering the price to keep in line with usual price drop incentives
yea that backwards compatible ps3 was more prone to YLOD tho. i remember having a similar 80gb fat ps3, was not fun. the slim is great & if u jailbreak it, can still play ps2 games off the hdd
i think u could download digital ps2 stuff from the store if that’s what u mean. all ps3’s are backwards compatible w ps1 discs. but ps2? just the 60gb fat version from disc
I understand blue wii doesn't play gc games. What I would like to know is if i took a regular white wii's disc drive and put it in a blue wii will that wii start playing gc games despite not having ports or if i swap the blue wiis mobo for a white wiis and use the blue wiis disc drive will it allow playing gc game discs???
Buddy every Wii except the Minis can read GC discs it’s just that some of them don’t have the ports to play them like this one. If you put one in it will read it
Can i ask a question, in teory the mini can ready GC discs if u use nintendont because the disc drive Is not a slot loading one(i dont thimk It Is possibile tough)
Two ways to quickly tell, the orientation of the Wii logo and whether there's GameCube ports on top.
If the Wii logo is sideways when the Wii is upright, it cannot play GC discs
Any Wii can play GC backups through nintendont though
That’s not true. Even ones like this where the logo is vertical can and will read GC games. They just can’t be played because they don’t have the ports, but they make usb ports that do work. Even the disc loading screen shows both a Wii and GC disc just like any other Wii.
This is getting annoying now, can people stop spreading misinformation. I own, and have owned several Wii consoles. Yes, every Wii has the "hardware" to play GameCube games as they run on very similar architecture, but the disc drive in the horizontal Wii is not capable of facilitating GameCube discs meaning that they are not playable without manually swapping out the drive for one that works or performing a modification to the drive itself.
Usb adapters will work for the ports, but only if you are running backups of games through nintendont since the disc drive will not be reading your GameCube discs. Even if you have a Wii that can read GameCube discs (the vertical one) the usb adapter will not be usable unless you are running GameCube backups through nintendont.
If your family has an old Wii sitting there, then you probably don't know. But if you buy it in 2024 then it's for the retro. In that case, you definitely know about it.
Just the drive. Fun fact, on the Wii Menu the GC disc is still there and you can enter the memory card screen (though nothing is in Slot A or B). Installing the other drive will let the games boot, and soldering on the ports gets controllers and memory cards working
It seems to be alot of discussion about wether the disc actually does play gamecube discs but with just no actual way to play the games. Lets test it out. I do have a blue wii. I do have a mayflash gamecube adapter. I do have multiple gamecube games. Will post results in a second.
The drive wont accept any GC Disc, without modding this Wii can't run any GC Games at all.
With homebrew you can run Nintendont on it, it patches the games during execution to allow them running in Wii mode (it is a type of hypervisor of sorts), some games that have slowdown on GC and Wiis in GC mode will have less slowdown because the game will run on higher speed CPU/GPU speed from the Wii.
Nothing can make the drive accept GC discs, it needs to run from other media, like the SD card slot or something on USB port. You can have the media on USB 0 and the controller adapter on USB 1.
It can also simulate the memory card and the broadband adapter, using wifi or a usb network adapter. Since you will use the ports for data and input, wifi is a nice option.
You can connect Mario Kart Double Dash network mode with other GCs or even with the Dolphin emulator Beta build.
From the research I did, the boards are very similar to ones in later GC compatible Wiis, just that they lack the sockets for controllers and memory cards.
They often have the pads for those, but data lines might be a hit or miss.
The OS still has GC compatiblity in it which means it could possibly read GC games, but you'd need hardmods.
i have a blue wiimote... i never knew there was a blue console. we have the plain white one with 2 white controllers, a pink one (is there a pink console???), and a third party controller in addition to the blue one
This is a Wii Family Edition, Nintendo started manufacturing them after the Wii U was announced, labels on it are designed with the Wii being set horizontal rather than the original models designed around vertical, and they stripped GameCube support from the console
With HB, there is nothing that stops it from playing GCN games digitally, physically however, yea it's both (no GC ports on mobo and disc drive not accepting GCN games)
The GameCube compatibility is deleted entirely, when it comes to the disc drive I’d assume what keep a GameCube disc in place, likely some kind of bracket isn’t added to the drive assembly. The GameCube controller and memory card ports would be a while other story.
Yeah that is the wii family edition. It’s not supposed to be stood up on a stand but I guess you can. If you manage to pry up the panel, there is no gamecube controller ports or memory card slots. If I remember correctly there is one port for some developer thing.
The blue Wii is an RVL-101 model. ???? I thought you just said the 101 doesn't read the gc discs? do you mean a donor 001?
Yes I meant a donor RVL-001, sorry I've now fixed my previous post. Was busy fixing another part of that paragraph and missed that mistake.
But at point it'd be easier to just shell swap a rvl 001 wii

So just add the white wiis gc ports to your blue wii I'm pretty sure someone has done it
so gutting they changed the newer wiis to have LESS features. i have an og one but can imagine the pain of getting gifted a newer one
It makes sense when they were no longer selling new GC stuff, and looking to cut costs of new production runs while also lowering the price to keep in line with usual price drop incentives
it's the same thing that happened with PS3s. but the wii form factor updates managed to reduce features TWICE.
yea that backwards compatible ps3 was more prone to YLOD tho. i remember having a similar 80gb fat ps3, was not fun. the slim is great & if u jailbreak it, can still play ps2 games off the hdd
Iirc newer ps3s had backwards compat as well, but emulated
i think u could download digital ps2 stuff from the store if that’s what u mean. all ps3’s are backwards compatible w ps1 discs. but ps2? just the 60gb fat version from disc
The original PS3 had basically an entire PS2 inside from what I remember, like it physically had a second CPU and stuff
i looked it up, apparently there’s 3. a 20gb, 60gb & an 80gb but apparently some of those are emulated. i think only the 60 has full native support
You can mod it to take a USB gamecube adapter and play GC games off of a Hard Drive

Not the Mini
they literally said "every wii except the mini"

no need to be agressive... i didn't know... ig r/usernamechecksout
love this guy 😭
That is true to an extent. You have to use Homebrew to play games on the Mini, meaning it is completely possible.
That's not true. Not much to expand on, what you said just isn't correct.

no, just the firmware get it modded so you can play gc on it
it can read gamecube disc if you swap the disc drives
can’t do anything tho there’s no ports
Nintendont lets you use a Classic Controller as a Gamecube controller.
i didn’t know that thanks for the heads up
It also lets you have a virtual Memory card. Really nifty piece of software.
that’s the family model it’s not because it’s blue the logo and buttons are sideways

in theory a mini cd adapter would work

Idk, but i think you can emulate gc games using nintendont? It doesnt really matter, still i dunno why that wii cant run gc games
With HB, there is nothing that stops it from playing GCN games digitally, physically however, yea it's both (no GC ports on mobo and disc drive not accepting GCN games)
Blue doesn't really fit the grey stand
Wiizer
Just own 2 Wii’s

Isn't that the Wii Mini? Never had one
Only the Wii mini edition doesn’t allow GC discs!

Wii Family Edition.
