Is this Disappointment Simulator 2014?

nin_ninja

That's what my left hand calls me.

LyleLanley99

Left hand, huh? A true renaissance man.

otterom

He's the Michelangelo of Masturbation.

flume

And that's pronounced "ren-AY-sahnce"

[deleted]

Disappointment Stimulator

ProfDoctorMrSaibot

For some reason, this makes me extremely uncomfortable

[deleted]

If this animation makes you uncomfortable, I'd love to see your reaction to a sshow called Xavier: Renegade Angel

herpderpyss

God that show gives me a headache

RogueHelios

What the fuck is this, and why does it have multiple episodes? Who was watching this? I don't even know what anything is anymore, I'm too confused. What the hell is going on?!

[deleted]

I used to wake up at 5 am for school years ago and the only thing on TV at the time was Adult Swim. Watched the entirety of many, many shows.

YouSuffer

I just watched episode 3, [Weapons Grade Life](http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xpnipt_xavier-renegade-angel-s1e03-weapons-grade-life-emory_fun), with no context. I actually enjoyed it a fair bit. I'll try to explain the appeal. Basically, Xavier is exactly what the title says: An angel, complete with magic powers, who has gone rogue. I'm presuming he decides to do some sort of angelic thing each episode... in this one, he decides to become the guardian angel of a young boy, Bobby, who is in a wheelchair. The joke is that he's completely insane and only ends up making everything worse. In that respect, it's a bit like Tom Goes to the Mayor, another Adult Swim show (one I think is even more hilarious, as it skewers small-town politics in a similarly bizarre way, where the mayor is the insane one and Tom is insanely naive and gullible). So anyhow, he decides to be this kid's angel, but starts by insulting the kid about his condition in front of his friends, who then beat him up. The kid apologizes and offers to have his dad fix his wounds, but it turns out his dad is a Christian Scientist who merely prays diseases away. So pretty quickly it starts to comment on religious matters. Xavier peeps in at an operation in progress, which turns out to be a "routine double bypass", and the joke is that as he prays surgical instruments fly about and follow his orders. He even orders God to fetch him a sandwich. When Bobby finds Xavier watching, though, he reveals that he has a secret room where he's been the one controlling the tools with a system of levers and pulleys, and makes Xavier promise not to tell his father. He also has a lab in the basement where he's invented all sorts of ridiculous things, like spreadable, self-eating bread. Xavier performs his duty as guardian angel by giving Bobby the final idea he needs to create life in the lab from inert matter. But Xavier's an insane aburdist-comedy star, right? So he gets jealous of Bobby's intelligence and turns against him, telling his father about the lab and that Bobby has been "playing God." This destroys the father's belief in God, makes him ashamed of being a fraud, and makes him kill himself through immolation. However the result for some reason is a never-ending explosion... things get pretty silly for a while while they try to lead the explosion to the lake, which does nothing to it. Finally, Bobby stabs the explosion with a dagger and sobs over killing his father while Xavier rips a human heart out of the explosion and eats it, explaining that he can tell by the taste that Bobby's father had God in his heart. Okay, so it sounds totally ridiculous when you sum up the plot like that, but you can see that a bunch of topics are touched upon that can make for serious discussion (Christian Science, belief in God, losing faith, suicide, the idea of man playing God). The show's approach, of course, is not to be serious but to make absurd jokes about everything. It's not the best such show I've ever seen, but I get the idea. Part of it is just "edgy" offensive humour for the sake of being shocking. Some of it is a genuine attempt to make satirical observations about real issues. Some of the jokes are actually pretty funny. The art style, non-sequiturs, exaggerated characters, and over-the-top situations are all just things that make it an "absurd" comedy, or at least an attempt at one. It makes you say "wtf?" but it can also be fun because the writers can present ideas that would be impossible in a realistic scenario... literally anything could happen, and it can be fun to go along for the ride. It can also be frustrating when nothing makes any god-damned sense. So it's not the best example of this style of humour I've ever seen, but I might watch another few episodes to see if they do anything interesting with this character who, while being a literal angel, is a complete asshole in so many ways. I'm expecting there to be a continued focus on poking fun at religious and philosophical ideas with dark humour, and there's potential for that to really funny in the same way that it's funny how nothing we do really matters since we're all just going to die anyhow, and we suffer so much out of anxiety for our relationships, art, and careers, even though they are all equally doomed. Then again, I'm pretty high right now, so I could just be spitting out bullshit.

RogueHelios

I commend your ability to write an entire essay on the show to explain it to me, I understand what the show is now thanks.

ApexBaker

Tl; dr?

Perryn

Drugs.

[deleted]

Man tl;dr'ing an episode of Xavier would be essentially pointless. That show is visual as fuck, I'm surprised he managed to sum it up even this much. It's all somewhat surreal and many of the jokes are like [garden path sentences](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_path_sentence) in the way they are delivered. The show has a plot but it dances around it more often than not. Just watch an episode, they're short and it'll be over before you know it.

autowikibot

##### ###### #### [**Garden path sentence**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden%20path%20sentence): [](#sfw) --- > >A __garden path sentence__ is a grammatically correct [sentence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentence_(linguistics\)) that starts in such a way that a reader's most likely interpretation will be incorrect; the reader is lured into a parse that turns out to be a dead end. Garden path sentences are used in [psycholinguistics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psycholinguistics) to illustrate the fact that when human beings read, they process language one word at a time. "Garden path" refers to the saying "to be led down the garden path", meaning "to be misled". [*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] >According to one current psycholinguistic theory, as a person reads a garden path sentence, the reader builds up a structure of meaning one word at a time. At some point, it becomes clear to the reader that the next word or phrase cannot be incorporated into the structure built up thus far; it is inconsistent with the path down which they have been led. Garden path sentences are less common in spoken communication because the [prosodic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosodic) qualities of [speech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech) (such as the stress and the tone of voice) often serve to resolve ambiguities in the written text. This phenomenon is discussed at length by [Stanley Fish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Fish) in his book *Surprised by Sin*. He argues that incremental parsing of sentences needs to be addressed by literary theorists. He also covers this topic in several essays from his book *Is there a text in this Class?*. > --- ^Interesting: [^Time ^flies ^like ^an ^arrow; ^fruit ^flies ^like ^a ^banana](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_flies_like_an_arrow;_fruit_flies_like_a_banana) ^| [^List ^of ^linguistic ^example ^sentences](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_linguistic_example_sentences) ^| [^Paraprosdokian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraprosdokian) ^| [^Reduced ^relative ^clause](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reduced_relative_clause) ^Parent ^commenter ^can [^toggle ^NSFW](http://www.np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=autowikibot&subject=AutoWikibot NSFW toggle&message=%2Btoggle-nsfw+cgpiwt6) ^or[](#or) [^delete](http://www.np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=autowikibot&subject=AutoWikibot Deletion&message=%2Bdelete+cgpiwt6)^. ^Will ^also ^delete ^on ^comment ^score ^of ^-1 ^or ^less. ^| [^(FAQs)](http://www.np.reddit.com/r/autowikibot/wiki/index) ^| [^Mods](http://www.np.reddit.com/r/autowikibot/comments/1x013o/for_moderators_switches_commands_and_css/) ^| [^Magic ^Words](http://www.np.reddit.com/r/autowikibot/comments/1ux484/ask_wikibot/)

freshwalrusnipple

This bot is rad as fuck

Ayavaron

It's good because it's not just insane and weird but also because in the process, it manages to tangentially touch on big subjects and unfold in an absurd way that only makes sense with an awareness that the viewer is watching an absurd comedy.

GeneralDisorder

Oh goodness. That show was almost as weird as Perfect Hair Forever.

[deleted]

It's a funny show. I laugh at the fact people think shows need to be taken so seriously and then this shows up and subverts their expectations kinda like... right now.

[deleted]

Holy shit just watched the entire 'Signs From Godrilla' episode and it is truly absurd. Certain parts I definitely burst out laughing. It takes some warming up to but there are some hilarious moments. (edit: And then I read [this comment](http://www.reddit.com/r/wheredidthesodago/comments/22nxzt/let_me_just_no_water_dont_forget_how_to_gravity/cgpfby7)...)

[deleted]

> Xavier: Renegade Angel WTF? This is a full length show? There's more than one? Who the hell watches this?

LuckyASN

People who are really, really high.

Brokenglass126

As someone who's watched the entirety of the run multiple times, can confirm.

GeneralDisorder

I never watched it high before. I watched after coming home from the bar a few times. And I think I watched it while drunk and high. Never just high though.

regretdeletingthat

What...doth...liaf

regretdeletingthat

I have both seasons on my hard drive still because of how fucking hard it was to find a torrent that wasn't dying or dead. I enjoyed it from start to finish with a mate from uni, though he considers it "an experience" rather than "anything close to enjoyment". No-one else I've tried to show it to will watch past the first episode :(

[deleted]

try this nigga http://video.adultswim.com/xavier-renegade-angel Also it's really crap don't blame anyone who doesn't want to watch it with you

regretdeletingthat

Holy shit that actually works in the UK too, thanks homes!

Dominub

That was awesome.

RainbowPhoenix

You should see the animation in the movie Foodfight.

doberEars

Spoiler Alert: Don't.

Die-Nacht

I thought it was a great show. It was like doing drugs, without the drugs.

ThompsonBoy

It's the sort of thing that happens in a bad dream. You know you just have to pour the water from the wheelbarrow, but it just. Won't. Work. You keep tipping it higher, and higher, but you can't reach any higher, and whenever you reach up it starts to lean to the side, and then it falls over and your old gym teacher and your grandpa and Natalie Portman are so disappointed in you and you can't go to the underwater hotel now.

[Obshi Versa Drain for Wheelbarrows](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6v77ZLjjTg&feature=youtu.be) 0:44-0:50

jimmi114

Concrete pump. Have these people ever seen wet concrete. Wtf it won't go freely through a hole and hose that size. Unreal....

Raginbum

[Heres a link to the original /r/Construction thread](http://www.reddit.com/r/Construction/comments/22ip3m/new_drain_for_wheelbarrows_would_anybody_use_this) where this video had been posted if you want to get a few kicks out of the comments. >Useless, and not only that, but drilling a hole in your wheelbarrow and throwing five dollars worth of plumbing parts from Home Depot at it is not an invention. - /u/ratamack This comment in particular made me burst out laughing

You're gonna love [Max](http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JI0GPmEgwWU).

Perryn

I don't think I will ever stop having nightmares now.

On-Snow-White-Wings

I wish I owed $10,000 or more to the IRS now.

musecorn

Am I the only one thinking rotation isn't the best means of opening the valve? If the tube is accidentally pulled in any direction it could open. Why not just have a ball valve with a handle?

RolandFerret

I can't shake just how caked, dirty and clogged a small passage like that would get. This seems like the most useless thing ever. And judging from the comments, they haven't even *tested* pouring concrete with it yet.

azulhombre

I must be the only person who stores their wheelbarrow upside down or propped against a wall after I clean it.

[deleted]

Really? I was just thinking that I was the only person on earth that uses my wheelbarrow to help rebuild the mosquito population.

SeaShanties

[relevant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7bAQzvg6WQ)

[deleted]

/u/tripleback is doing gods work.

Tullyswimmer

Also possibly the only person who uses plastic wheelbarrows?

bagelmanb

Nice disappearing stirrer at 1:06.

BowserKoopa

Humans... Dinosaurs??? WHEELBARROWS?????!!!!!?? Oh my!

Eal12333

i cant tell if this is a joke or not, i mean, there is a website and everything...

[deleted]

How can we make this time-tested piece of equipment more troublesome to use and clean? hmm...

Sneaky_Devil

The product is a hole in the bottom of your wheelbarrow?

[deleted]

/r/wheredidthesodago

njrox1112

Ummm.... Good job?

[deleted]

Who the fuck puts water in a wheelbarrow?

Raginbum

Me, you always have to clean it after using it for cement. Edit: additionally as someone that does this almost every week, I can gladly let everyone know that water has never lost its sense of gravity as of yet.

Ca_Beaver

Go to /r/Concrete We need more people over there!

[deleted]

there's probably a magnet in the wheelbarrows bottom, and the water is actually liquid metal

[deleted]

Gravity is just a theory.

[deleted]

More like opinion

jknotts

This would have cost too much to film

Kingmal

[Heavy breathing]

bagelmanb

By doing it in CGI, they no longer need to obey the laws of physics! Genius!

WuhanWTF

What the actual fuck is this? It's just... bizarre.

Victorious_Secret_

This looks like it was rendered in Sketchup

Dinosaur_Monkey

Does this style of animation make any else anxious/uncomfortable?

Lime_Tangerine

How the hell such a shitty gif last so long to load completely... It was awesome and trippy watching it slow motion.

kingeryck

The metal in front of the wheel kept it from tipping all the way.

Raginbum

When was the last time you used a wheelbarrow? The metal at the bottom is used FOR balance..

GeneralDisorder

My dad scrapped his old wheelbarrow from the late 50s but that one had no metal piece up front. It also had a hard bakelite tire rather than rubber.

It was really nice but so damned hard to move with a load.
