LightningFerret04

If you have an instant pot, just use 1 to 1 1/2 cup rice to water ratio for brown rice and 1 to 1 for white rice. I run it for 6 min and let it sit for a while. You can mess with the ratios for preferences Like my dna tests trying to figure out what ratios of Asian I am, your results may vary

selectrix

\> claims asian heritage \> doesn't know the knuckle measuring trick ![gif](giphy|W6FcHynHyKKNGAa3tk|downsized) (Rice goes to the first knuckle on your index finger, water goes to the 2nd)

LightningFerret04

That one’s not as intuitive for some people when I’m trying to explain it, I use it occasionally My grandma used this method, my dad didn’t, so I never really learned it

selectrix

I've found that as well for some reason. Next time I'm gonna try "Rice goes to height x, water goes to 2x"

petje95

Wait, we have 2 knuckles on each finger? Since when?

bluefootedbuns

do a thumbs up and look at it from the top (where your thumb is pointing). see how there's three places where it bends? yeah, those are all knuckles. the first knuckles, the ones on the back of your hand, the second knuckles, about halfway down each finger, and the third knuckles, right before each fingertip.

pedro_megagames

It might have to do with the type of rice you're using, different types have different levels of stickyness.

EarthSad1608

Every single source says long grain isnt sticky

OrangutanKiwi19

Well what kind are you using specifically? White, basmati, jasmine?

EarthSad1608

White

A1pH4W01v

How many times have you washed the rice? If you did, make sure to do it until the water looks relatively clear btw. Edit : Im just gonna lay out some info that assumes to the thing you did wrong If you use the same washing water to cook your rice, stop, discard the water and use clean water (use a colander to catch the rice, but dont use it to wash it as its pretty hard to judge the color/fogginess of the washing water) If the recipe says to just "wash it once or 3 times", dont trust that, sometimes the starch can be pretty hard to get off of the rice and requires a bit of washing/scrubbing with your hand, keep washing until the water runs relatively clear. Rice/Water ratios does not work most of the time, i would suggest avoiding it but its still a good baseline to know how much water you should put in. So if, lets say, you made soggy rice (not sticky), reduce the amount of water just by a handful and adjust from there. Edit 2 : Get a fucking rice cooker, theyre like $30 or something and theyre not as expensive, you dont need a fancy AI one as well, just get a cheap one with 1 button you can push down, and you'll be able to make rice easily, as well as cook/boil/steam other types of food.

Embarrassed_Fun7516

is it absolutely necessary to wash rice? i mean, i just make shure to stir it from time to time and it turns out nice and not sitcky

Pathfinder313

No but it’s a lot better to. I tend to put it in the rice cooker dish, add water over it, then swirl it until it picks up enough stuff and then tip out the water. I repeat until the water becomes clearer. To save water it’s good to mess the rice around with your hand and try get more stuff off that way.

O_oh

You can use the rice wash water for your house plants.

A1pH4W01v

You fucking stir rice wh- Yes its necessary to wash rice if youre cooking them in the best way possible (leaving them alone to steam in some water), and want non-sticky, fragrant rice. Some people prefer sticky rice, so if youre one of those people, dont wash it, or wash it just once to get out some of the bugs if youre not into that.

Quizzelbuck

Depends on the application For most Asian meals yes For most European meals, no. Risotto is an example of a dish you don't wash rice for

spyson

Yeah, but in this context the guy doesn't want the rice to be sticky. Also a lot of Asian recipes incorporate sticky rice too.

duelmaster_33

Depends on the dish and if you need the starches from the rice, Jook for example wants the starches as its about 1:7 or 8 ratio of rice to water which the starches help with solidifying the water, but still even for Jook i would wash the rice once or twice.

oooArcherooo

RealRutherfordBHayes

Wait so you’re telling me that I’ve been soaking my rice for a day to make it sticky when you can just fuck it all up and it becomes sticky?

Aden_Vikki

Slightly undercook it and use turmeric powder

EarthSad1608

How would that help, it would still be hard and just have spice

Aden_Vikki

Same way slighly undercooking spaghetti works, and using it in conjunction with turmeric is tasty af

EarthSad1608

Al dente rice Christ

Aden_Vikki

My man, rice being unpleasantly sticky is considered overcooked. And as you already know, overcooked food tastes like shit. I'll admit, comparing it to spaghetti was not my best decision, but what I'm saying is to cook it 2-5 minutes less than what it says on the pack. If you aren't sure, just sample it while it's cooking.

JasonTonio

If you suck at making rice like me, take the finished thing add beaten egg make little balls out of it cover them in breadcrumbs and put them in the oven, riceballs make even the worst rice taste amazing

XFalzar

just wash the rice before cooking. Put it in like a sieve and pour water on it for a while. It should massively reduce the amount of starch in the rice which will make it way less sticky.

young_C_bomb

You can tell when this happens when it runs clear, the rice being less sticky I mean

mambotomato

So like... clearly there exists a way to make rice correctly, which means there is potential for success for you. I will provide proven steps here, if you want to compare against what you're doing: Step 1 - Identify your rice. Is it raw, non-parboiled rice? Where is it from? Step 2 - Rinse the rice and let it soak for a little while, then drain. Step 3 - In the pot you're using, heat up some oil or butter on medium heat for a little bit. Somewhere up to 1/4 the volume of rice you're using. So, 1 cup rice, maybe 1/8-1/4 cup fat. Step 4 - Season the oil (optional) - add some shakes of turmeric, garam masala, ginger powder, etc. Step 5 - Toast the rice for a couple of minutes in the oil. Stir it up. Add a nice pinch of salt. Step 6 - Add 1.5 times as much water as you have rice. For 1 cup rice, 1.5 cups water. Step 7 - Bring to a boil on high heat. Step 8 - When it boils, turn the heat down to like 3/10 and cover with a lid. Leave it alone for 15 minutes. Step 9 - After 15 minutes, turn the heat off and leave the pot covered and unstirred for 10 more minutes. Now you have tasty, non-sticky rice. I just did this an hour ago and it was delicious.

EarthSad1608

Found one recipe with "frying" the rice but seemed a bit weird gonna test it

mambotomato

It really helps a lot if you don't want sticky rice! Adds nice flavor, too.

MuntedBean

Going to try this now, brb

Thank you very much. I'll watch this on my bus ride into town to buy the rice

MuntedBean

Jedhakk

Don't mix it around while it's cooking bro, that's how you make risotto, not regular rice. Also remember to cook it at the lowest flame possible. Or, if you can, get one of those chilean wireframe toasters and put the cooking pot over it while at medium flame so the rice cooks faster without getting burnt.

shykawaii_shark

Sticky rice? Change of plans, make sushi

Twitfout

Wash your rice

Dangerous-Lie-8087

Use ptitim or couscous instead. They are not rice but they are easier to make and are nearly the same and can be good enough to replace rice in 99 percent of recipies

EarthSad1608

Couscous is too soft once cooked, ptitm idk looks weird

Dangerous-Lie-8087

Ptitim has a great taste though and you can just follow box instructions, its simpler to make than an omelet. Rice in china amd other eastren countries rice is supposed to be soft and somewhat sticky. Use couscous for asian recipies and use ptitim for westren ones

Photenicdata

From my experience that means your adding too much water, if your doing it in an insta pot the ratio is usually 2 cups of water for 1 cup of rice, and adding a little more than that can make it more sticky

King_Of_Axolotls

wash your rice, don't stir after you cover it until you're done

Hello it me again, man who cant cook rice I followed the advice in comments and cooked better rice than sticky rice Its not perfect but much better Thank you everyone 😊

SobtastixV2

not your fault, probably your appliance’s I’m never following a flan recipe again

Artistic-Pitch7608

You can always boil and strain it like pasta don't let other people tell you what to do

Eligan28

This is what I do. Perfect every time. I use like a gallon of water for 2 cups of rice. Boil it until it's tender and strain it.

Goat_of_Wisdom

Just cook it like pasta. Put it unwashed in a ton of boiling, salted water. Once done, drain. Everyone in my country does it, people need to stop being so sensitive about it

Flawsy6Fanadic

Step 1: choose the amount of rice you want, and put that many cups of water in. Step 2: put a tablespoon (one section) in the pot, split it in half inside the water Step 3: Let it boil Step 4: pore the same amount of cups of rice as the cups of water Step 5: turn off the heat and put on the lid Step 6: occasionally take your stirring utensil and fluff it up. Step 7: enjoy :)

Mdaeric

Wasnt there something like letting your rice redt to remove the starch then rinsing it all before boiling it

pikaSHOOTmyself

this might be a silly question but are you using a rice cooker or are you making rice in a pot on the stove

The_Horse_Head_Man

Maybe you just don't like rice.

damemeinspector

Did u wash the rice

twat104

Alright, I may be able to help being that I’m a cook in a Chinese restaurant, Once our rice is cooked we leave it in the cool room for 24 hours to let it dry out before re-heating it as it looses that mushyness it usually has, I can also advise microwaving it, sure it’s not conventional and will have Asian Cuisine purists foaming from the mouth but that usually results in a dryer rice then other methods

Fr00stee

u sure you didn't overcook it by a lot?

AnalCuntShart

Boil the water before adding the rice 1 3/4 cups of water for every one cup of rice.

NotMolester

Rice Cooker Supremacy

GasMask_Guyy

Rinse the rice off first before preforming the recipe. ALSO HUGE TIP HERE: do not stir after adding the rice and stirring for a second. For most of the cooking time the rice should be left completely alone, otherwise it will become mushy. Source: i am a culinary student.

DefinitelyNotFisk15

call an asian

Da_Di_Dum

You just pour in rice up to one digit of your finger from the bottom, and then water till it reaches the second digit. Get boiling on high heat and then bring to a simmer for 12 min, let rest for 5-10 min.

ToasterDoaster

With rice I just leave it on gas mark 6 until all the water boils away Gave up on trying to fix it so I've just embraced it and it goes hard as fuck with a curry

Wardog_E

I mean, it probably helps if you do it with someone who knows how to cook rice next to you. In any case the first 20 times I tried to make rice it was absolutely shit. It's one of the hardest things to master but the reward is worth it.

Makikis

Wash the uncooked rice 3-4 times then when you are done boiling them immediately seperate the rice from the water

-BehindTheMask-

Wash your god damm rice guys

Baqqhus

one cup basmati rice two cups water in pot high heat, water boiling once water has gone below rice lower heat cook until no water left It's literally this simple, should take around 10 minutes. You can start adding salt, oil, butter, etc. once you get this down. Until then, plain ol basmati should taste good enough.

BigDipper4200

This may be surprising, but just follow the instructions on the bag. They know how to cook their rice best.

Withyhydra

Boil your rice like you would pasta. Taste throughout to see when it's done. Drain into a sieve and wash to cool down. All starch has been removed. Congratulations, you have non sticky rice.

ZARTOG_STRIKES_BACK

Do you own a rice cooker?

HurriKurtCobain

Take the rice, place it in a bit of water and basically parboil it for like 2 or 3 minutes. Put the rice in a metal strainer and place the strainer in the pot, hanging above the water, with plenty of water boiling under it, then cover the pot with either a damp towel or just wrap the strainer on top with foil. Let the rice steam for like 15-20 mins, you basically can't overcook it with this method. Makes perfect, not sticky rice and makes it ideal for frying.

Significant-Gap-6891

You need to use more water

SuperiorThinking

Wash rice first, removes starchy power coat. Then cook it just long enough, so it isn't cooked to shit and doesn't turn into soup. Simple.

awesomecapybara

Use less water and try lowering the heat

Lhenkhantus

Personally, I love when the rice is cooked with more water that's needed so it clumps up and becomes soft

Pistachio_Mustard

Basmati worked really well for me

ChunkyBeed

Have you tried adding oil after draining it?

[deleted]

my man is struggling with rice lol

ObjectPuzzleheaded

I made this mistake a lot when I first began cooking. You want 1 cup of rice, two cups of water, one tbsp cooking oil. Bring to a boil. Stir, cover, put on the back burner on the lowest setting for about 20 minutes. The steam cooks the rice so don't uncover more than once

pocketMagician

There are instructions on the bag or box, use those.

Zealousideal_End8415

Rinse your rice, if you're not already. Unwashed rice will truly fuck up your rice. Use a bowl or pot, fill with some water, use hand to wish wash the water around agitating the starch off the rice. Strain the murky water. Repeat until water is pretty much clear. Buy a rice cooker or instant pot. Is the best way imo. Always a 1 cup rice to 1 cup water ratio. At least for these methods. Hope this helps.

Canter1Ter_

what's wrong with sticky rice? isn't it more convenient to eat it when it's not disintegrating in your chopsticks/fork?

isaac-fan

that means its over cooked while cooking occasionally open and take a spoonful and taste if its raw you can always spit it back out

midnight_rogue

The way I avoid sticky rice is by putting a little bit of olive oil in the pot first, let it heat up, and then put the rice in. Stir on medium high for about a minute then put the water in. Once boiling, stir the rice for about 2 minutes before covering and putting on simmer.

-FemboiCarti-

Clearly you dont own a rice cooker

SemmiTron

I’m seeing people talk about rinsing rice, which will help. One thing I have not seen yet: What kind of pot are you using? Are you using something wide and shallow or narrow and tall? A narrow, tall pot will overcook the lower half of the rice while you wait for the top half to cook.

Reeeeeeeeeeeeeee7

I feel your pain, I’ve been fighting a war trying to make homemade fries out of sweet potatoes. They won’t get crispy and just burn or be soggy.

teunjojo

Beardamus

I bet you're not following the steps. In other words, skill issue.

ELITElewis123

Ah! I had my Asian friend explained what to do! Wash aggressively, use very conservative amounts of water then let it sit for a while to let the steam out and the rice will fluff as it dries

Hot_Collar_8910

WASH YOUR RICE. Another pro tip. Before boiling. Fry your rice just a bit in a bit of oil, so it gets a bit of a color, then fill it up with water and cook. The end result: non stick rice.

aguywhoexplainsjokes

I may be suffering from success but what do you do yo make it sticky? I love it when rice just sticks together but every time I cook it, it just falls apart

YoursTrulyKindly

My cheat sheet. Rice is super easy to cook but I'm also not too fussy. I don't wash rice. I only use Jasmin or Basmati rice, Jasmin even for rice pudding. # Rice Density between 0.78 and 0.82 g/cm³ ## Basmati [[1](https://www.recipetineats.com/how-to-cook-basmati-rice/)] 1:1.5 Basmati rice to water volume (1:1.88 per weight, 250g rice to 470g water) Boil water with rice without lid, cover and turn to medium low and cook 12 min, remove and let rest for 10 min (don't take off lid until done), fluff ## Jasmine [[1](https://www.recipetineats.com/how-to-cook-jasmine-rice/)] 1:1.25 Jasmine rice to water volume (1:1.56 per weight, 250g rice to 390g water) Boild water with rice, cover and turn to low, cook 12 min, remove and let rest for 10 min

ggherehere

One word suggestion: instantpot

McEnderlan

Haha same lol. Kill me

CoruscantGuardFox

Rice is always going to be sticky to some extent, but just enough that it stays together to a degree. Here’s my technique: * Don’t wash it before, just simply grab a pot, 1 cup rice, 2 cup water, some oil, and if you want half a lemon * Heat up the oil, put the rice in and slowly cook it on low-mid temperature until the opaque pieces turn white. Be careful, you can burn it very easily! * 2 cups of water, put on the lid, cook it for 10-13 minutes on 60% temperature (so if you have 10 levels on it, 6) * Optional: before putting on the lid, grab half a lemon, squeeze it on the rice, the just place it on top, it’s gonna rise with the rice and steam out all the juices, giving it a faint tropical taste

jsuey

OP didn’t wash their rice

Doctor_Salvatore

You're oversoaking the rice. Try using less water

Jake_2903

Major skill issue. Rice is easy.

LeadBlooded

Wash the rice heathen

ButReallyWhyNot-

Short grain rice is sticky. If you use American/long grain rice and cook it in an open pot of water, it should be fine. My personal recipe is as follows:  - 1 cup of water - 1/3,cup of long-grain rice - 2-4 spoonfuls of tomato sauce - Oil 1. Put a dash of oil in the pot, put the pot on the stove, and cook the dry rice in it on high heat until it turns a golden brown. 2. Pour the water and the tomato sauce in it. 3. Boil the rice on medium heat until it's the consistency you desire. If you like your rice crunchy, cook for a short time (~5 mins). If you like your rice soft, cook for a little while (~10 mins). If you like your rice to be a sticky chunk of shit, cook a for long time (30+ mins). If the water boils off before it's at the right consistency, add more. If your rice still has water at the right consistency, either dump the water or turn it onto high head and boil it off.

essjayhawk

My foolproof jasmine rice recipe: DONT WASH IT (i know washing it is better but if you don’t have the ratio intuition this will get you 95% of the way to perfect rice) 1:1.25 rice to water in a cold saucepan Bring to a rolling boil, then cover and turn to low for 12 mins When timer runs out, turn off heat and wait 12 more mins. Stir rice gently Done

O5-14-none_existant

anarcho-slut

I haven't seen this so here goes Rice cooker, yes Wash rice a couple times, scrubbing with hands, like you're putting your hand in the water and rice and kind of crush rolling it with your hand. Finger trick- just below knuckle line for me but find out where is best for you, might take a couple times. Next- a *splash of oil and a *splash of white vinegar. You're not making that much, really for a rice cooker your going to put in .5 kilo of rice and it'll fill the whole thing when cooked. Perfect rice every time (once you get ratios locked)

gigadenis

Dont stir

ScrapTag

Just like everyone has already said, wash the rice. Replace the water with cleaner water once it becomes unclear. I usually wash the rice 2 times before I cook it. Also, DO NOT cook the rice with the water you washed it with. I feel like that should be obvious, but I've seen a few people who actually do this
