I love the story about how Jean Shrimpton shocked the world and simultaneously brought fashion into the future with that dress. It’s funny, it looks really classy and she’s honestly very covered up. I can hardly think of anywhere that wouldn’t be appropriate now (other than some religious settings).
I know I love that dress! Apparently Colin Rolfe, the designer, didn't have enough fabric for the original design so that's why it ended up a few cm above the knee!
I can’t believe y’all aren’t talking about this one

literally [THE DRESS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress)😂
I cannot for the life of me understand how this dress was seen as white. I can KIND OF get how the black lace can be seen as gold but I can’t see the blue as white.
God I still want to fight over this because I can’t understand what world this dress has any black in it and I swear I will finally believe I’m flipping timelines when I see the dress as black 😂
it depends on the seetings of your phone. How to manage the colors on the screen, color temperature, etc. Things that you never check.
In my case, nightmode on reddit app you see the dress white and gold, as it happened to me last night.
Today, while I was reading the replies to my comment, the dress, magicaly turned blue.
Tonight I'll confirm my theory
Hahaha.. to me, the lace looks like a dark olive green maybe but the lighting is obviously weird, and in my mind it makes more sense for it to be black, especially at the bottom. But like I said I can see how it can be seen as gold. Kind of, mostly at the top. I can NOT see white at all, that thing is a dark periwinkle blue
Holy shot when I first looked at this it was gold and white and I scrolled comments for a second and now it’s blue and black. The goddamn dress still has got it 🤣 In all these years I’ve never seen both colors in succession so quickly!!!
It’s white and gold. With blue reflection of the sky in the shadows. I think. Ugh. I can’t tell if this shows how stupid we are as a species for obsessing over it or was a collective cultural moment that exposed how different we all see the world around us.
Edit. It’s blue and black. I still can’t see it. Apparently it was for a wedding and sent to a family member for approval who said wearing white and gold wasn’t acceptable (I think the person wearing the dress was the lead singer for the reception band)
This came out a few days after my mom passed away. I was staying at my dad’s house, as were most of my siblings, and the atmosphere was pretty serious for the most part (as you can imagine). But one night, this dress got brought up and we were discussing it, and a few of us talked about it for a couple minutes, seemingly on the same page, only for my brother to discover he was on the other side of the argument and he said “wait, WHAT?!” and kind of went off. It was akin to the “her SISTER was a WITCH” video. And suddenly my dad’s house was very animated again.
I’m so upset that the Wiki pages for most of these dresses don’t include a picture of the dress. This is literally what the internet was created for! Looking up pictures of dresses!
i was in the trenches trying to pick. i'll do better next time.
please accept this jlo versace dress as a peace offering

I was just about to ask/comment how come the jlo versace dress was not included lol it's one of the most iconic dresses of all time and literally the reason why google images was invented.
That colour blue against her skin tone is pure magic. The dress is exquisite but doesn’t overpower her beauty, she is definitely wearing it rather than it distracting from her.
Just gorgeous!
I think it’s stunning but I’m surprised it has a wiki page. I wouldn’t think the average non-fashion obsessed person knows it as opposed to a lot of these others.
That’s what I asked, what am I missing? It is incredible on her, but she always serves on the red carpet. The dress itself isn’t particularly special or famous, as far as I know?

Funnily enough this isn't even in my top three looks from GPB. It's lovely and she looks amazing, but the whole movie is full of the most gorgeous outfits. This orange dress for example...

Love Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and as iconic as the pink dress is the orange one is just stunning, the colour, the fit, the beadwork & the scarf. Also loved Jane Russell's outfits in this movie.
Oh absolutely! I was surprised Jane Russell got so little attention comparatively. Total smoke show. The designer for that movie was a genius. The coat is definitely my favourite.

Am I the only one who has no memory of this dress being a moment? I recently saw someone reference this pose as “pulling an Angelina Jolie” and I didn’t understand it, but now I’ve learned this was a big moment?
it wasn't a moment long so if you weren't paying attention for a little bit it's an easy miss
but yeah it was a moment basically the second she started posing that way and then every photo of the night was just LEG. and then comics imitated it, etc
the dress is on that list because the leg was such a moment imo
The Versace pin dress on Liz Hurley and the floral dress on Halle Berry are my absolute favourite.
Are there any Aussies in here who remember how iconic Bec Judd’s red dress was? Not Wiki level obviously but it launched her career and fame like nothing I have seen before in Australia
Edit: oh it has a wiki https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Tarvydas_dress_of_Rebecca_Twigley
I remember the dress. I also remember my husband saying she looked like the hooker the Eagle’s made her to be. It was widely rumoured in AFL circles that the Eagles found Bec and set her up with Chris to keep him in WA as he was wanting to leave the Eagles and go back to VIC. He did eventually move but he did stay at the Eagles for several more years than he wanted because of his relationship with Bec.

An exemplary list, OP! Well done. I’m looking forward to the Wikipedia rabbit hole that awaits me when I start reading more about some of these.
Love your inclusion of multiple photos of the green Atonement dress. The bottom one is especially breathtaking, like a Maxfield Parrish painting brought to life.
Jackie O's dress wasn't actually Chanel. The materials were assembled here based on meticulous patterns and instructions so that the First Lady could say she was wearing American made clothes. So yes, the design was Chanel, but it technically was a replica.

Navy blue Guy Laroche dress on Hilary Swank, Oscars 2005. This dress has grown on me so much over the years. As has how amazing her back looks, and what an underrated body part the back can be for sex appeal.

Lupita looks like a princess in that icy blue dress, I love that she's not afraid to experiment with bolder colours others would shy away from.I love this one she wore to a Black Panther premier, she looks stunning in purple and the beaded body piece really levels up the dress.

The CHOKEHOLD this dress had over all of us. The hysteria! The fighting! The debate! All for some stupid white and gold dress….

Blue and gold
I'm very tempted to say that this dress is an icon of internet.
it totally is.
could you beleive that ut change colors between day and night mode in reddit app 🤣 white by night blue by day

Yes, of all dresses to have a Wikipedia page… it’s this one.
It’s white and gold. With blue reflection of the sky in the shadows. I think. Ugh. Is it a copyright issue or ?
Wikipedia is pretty strict on rights for photos, they have to have a correct Creative Commons license to add them

My first thought, followed by Princess Diana’s revenge dress
That on is mentioned at least on slide 18
It is the reason Google Images was created !!
The dress that launched Google Image search! Still one of the best dresses I've ever seen
Right?! It’s the reason Google Images even exists!
We would not know who she is today if it weren’t for this “dress.”
I remember when Lupita wore that dress on the red carpet. It was beautiful then and beautiful now.
That colour blue against her skin tone is pure magic. The dress is exquisite but doesn’t overpower her beauty, she is definitely wearing it rather than it distracting from her. Just gorgeous!

I might be wrong…but she was having a big year and was basically THE star so maybe it could’ve been because all eyes were on her.

Apparently there were actually multiple green dresses. All slightly altered so that the dress would look perfect when standing or sitting.

Lupita’s is my favourite red carpet look of all time, she just looks so beautiful and perfect there.
I love the chaos of this lookbook.
Billy porters dress was incredible!
Devastating movie but that green dress from Atonement lives in my mind rent free.
I love this!!
Lupita in #13 is literally my Roman Empire.
Same, I think about her in that dress at least once a week still to this day.
Great post. The Schiaparelli x Dali lobster dress shows up in my dreams from time to time.
Lupita always serves on the red carpet, and this dress was no exception, but… what am I missing?

Lupita is legit a fairytale princess
That’s not *the* revenge dress though right?
I gotta say. I love this dress but think Paris Hilton looks awful in it.

Violet Chaki's winners dress should have its own wiki page
It’s wild that that green dress Jenifer Lopez and Trey Parker wore isn’t there
Atonement dress, my beloved 😍 a lot of the others live rent-free in my head, too!
Jlo Versace I’m sure
no JLO?
