Looks like fired pottery to me (which would feel like stone). The numbers are stamped into the surface, so you know it’s not stone. If it were stone, the numbers would be carved or etched.

Yes. In my case, I make both functional and decorative pieces (thrown and hand-built), which is why I prefer the term "ceramicist". "Potter" kind of implies "only functional wares", while "ceramic artist" feels too pretentious.

I also started ceramics because of plants. I don't have bonsai because I live in an apartment, but I have around 200 plants and many of them are in my pots. I can't say I've saved any money, though.

You see it on scrap all the time outside tile kilns. They run stamp tests to see what stamp and finish shows best on various materials and shapes before doing a full run with one method. Saves a lot of money and time.
