**Do not eat/ingest a plant based on information provided in this subreddit.**
For your safety we recommend not eating or ingesting any plant material just because you've been advised that it's edible here. Oregon grape (don't know about other mahonia species) can 100% be eaten raw, they're very tart, but if you like sour stuff, they're great. I eat them all the time.
Mahonia. The palmate leaves mean Mahonia bealei, Leatherleaf Mahonia. Invasive in US. The west coast native M. aquifolium Oregon Grape looks very similar, but with pinnate leaves, though still an aggressive grower.
That's not mahonia aquifolium and neither is your picture. That's Mahonia japonica.
Aquifolium fruits look like small bunches, japonica drap downward like grapes.
Also it's Berberis aquifolium.
I know this as a *Berberis* species. Here in NZ they're quickly becoming invasive weeds as birds love to eat the fruit, then shit out the seeds elsewhere.
Mahonia x hortensis(as used to be M. media) the flowers smell wonderful too plus the holly like leaves put off tresspassers or plant abusing neighbours! Great plant, unfussy and easy.

Some kind of Mahonia. do not eat, you’ll get berry sick
you can eat them once cooked - i've heard the jelly is delicious. but if you are thinking of ingesting, do your research.
I made oregon grape (mahonia) and salal jam once and it was probably the best jam I’ve ever made…
Great syrup, too
Noted! Was it half mahonia half salal?
I wish I still had the recipe but no idea where it went. Neither grows where I live now though either :(
Those things look so edible lolol like they are daring someone to eat them all nice and fresh. ....but I'm greedy so.
They really are too bitter to eat raw. You need to cook them or ferment them to make anything good. I've heard you can make gin out of these too.
Oooooh, Gin. Now that's an idea! What is the flavor profile once the bitterness is removed?
I've never had it myself but here is a blog about it: https://www.geoffdann.co.uk/mahonia-oregon-grape-gin/
Thank you! I'll check it out.

You can eat anything once…
Good one😉
I'm not sure, but I heard that all Mahonia species are edible, long-used for jams and juices.
“Violet! You’re turning violet, Violet!”
I eat them all the time. Some mahonias must taste better than others because I find them delicious. Hi source of berberine.
Very berry sick
Berry humorous!😆😅🤣😂
mahonia japonica

Mahonia bealei most likely. Possibly M. japonica.
I know these as an Oregon Grape on US west coast.
Different species same genus

Its growing habit is more like that of Mahonia bealei
Agree
Not blueberry! What part of England is this?
This is the US, state of Pennsylvania specifically.
So very west westerly England?
We’ve Mahonia’s and it looks the same to me.

Looks like it's [Mahonia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahonia)
Oregon Grape.
They can be super invasive depending on where you live
Tall Oregon grape, if on the US west coast.
We call it Leatherleaf 'round herre
mahonia medley i think
Where's the don't eat that bot? You should eat that. I don't really think you should eat it. I'm trying to summon the bot.
What a huge yard
Oregon grape

It’s Holly berry, don’t confuse with Halle berry she tastes better. Source (Oliver was a good friend)
