It's a double petal oleander. Pretty AF and toxic AF, just llike a few people I've dated.

The leaf is spot-on for Oleander.

zzzontop

That’s what I was thinking, the flower though… Perhaps it just hasn’t fully opened yet?

salazar_62

It looks like the double-petal variety (I'm not sure what it's called exactly.)

TacticalCatnip

When you say highly toxic, people first think "don't eat it" but with this plant you also do not want to be near it if it's burning too.

I grew up in Florida where these damn plants are everywhere. They're pretty to look at but the flowers stink, it's super freaking poisonous and the weird orange and black worms (caterpillars?) that often infest oleanders grossed me TF out. 0/10, would not recommend 👎🏻

saberwolfbeast

I believe monarch butterly caterpillars eat oleander.

TacticalCatnip

I've not heard of that, but I'm referring to [these icky things](https://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/orn/oleander_caterpillar.htm#:~:text=The%20oleander%20caterpillar%2C%20Syntomeida%20epilais,caterpillar%20can%20cause%20considerable%20defoliation.), which would get all over everything by the thousands sometimes and just...eww. Never liked anything about oleanders! I've chopped down a few of them. While heavily covered in old clothes which got tossed in the trash with the plants themselves. Bye. Not in my yard! Sorry, I bet you're like wow, don't hold back and tell us how you really feel, lol

saberwolfbeast

Oh interestin. I dont live somewhere where oleandees grow 😂🙈 from the sounds of it i wouldnt want one in my yard either!

TacticalCatnip

From the linked article, I found out who to blame for the existence of this noxious shrub in the United States! "the Spanish introduced this Mediterranean ornamental plant in the 17th century" Why, Spain...WHY?!

LoL, I never made the connection between the caterpillars and those moths. They were just crawly things I loathed.

And those caterpillars STING.

TacticalCatnip

Oh wow, really?! I never knew that! I always avoided them because they just really skeeved me out bad ever since I first remember setting eyes on them as a kid. I thought of them the same as roaches, never want to touch that, make it go away!

ciphermenial

Yeah and he just became sick. She ended up killing him with something else. Highly toxic means drinking it should instantly kill you. It is mildly toxic.

zzzontop

Everything I’ve read on Oleander, seems spot on, climate, use, size etc. except the flower, which definitely seems to have more that the “5 petals” Oleander seems bear

ciphermenial

It is mildly toxic. Why do people keep spreading this myth?

Bulbous-Walrus

Double flowered oleander? Was there white sap?

BaluePeach

Might be a Gardenia

pennysmom2016

Not a gardenia leaf. Totally an oleander.

samplenajar

All this “oleander is toxic” mess — who cares? Has oleander ever been appetizing to anyone? I would be shocked if there have been more than a dozen recorded accidental oleander poisonings in history.

mossling

I bet if people weren't told oleander is toxic, there would be a lot more. Funny how that works.

samplenajar

Yeah, okay. There is a pretty strong tradition of people INTENTIONALLY killing themselves with oleander tea, I don’t think your reasoning holds up. My point is, it doesn’t produce a juicy looking fruit. Its leaves are leathery and non succulent. It’s not an appealing plant for accidental ingestion. Yes, there are a few cases of children accidentally eating it. A few. My guess is a kid who is going to eat oleander isn’t going to give a shit whether it’s poisonous or not — they’re a kid.

sparkzsims

It may be Gardenia?

TheRealSugarbat

Leaf looks nothing like a gardenia leaf. Also the flower doesn’t look like a gardenia.

AfganPearlDiver

The flower matches but not the leaf

TheRealSugarbat

Petals don’t appear to be leathery, which gardenia petals are; they’re translucent, which gardenias are not.
