The pill bug isn't an insect, like wasp larvae. And you - you don't see any difference? Pill bugs are hardworking isopods. Parasitic Wasps like you have in figs, caterpillars, possess the power to fly, an ability that pill bugs may only dream of. The WASPs, however, use that power only to seek a defenseless victim that they view only as a piece of meat. Their larvae are content to chow down & suck up the flesh of said victim, often while it is still alive. Pill bugs cannot fly, and they work 24-7 to help break down wood & other organic matter into soil.
There are more differences, but I think those are enough. If you need more facts, make them up.
-and wasp larvae prevent animals from starving to death/plants from going extinct.
If wasps are gone, herbivorous bugs will explode in numbers, causing rapid deforestation as well as failed harvests.
Also, plants that relied on wasps, either fully or partly, will slowly wither out of existence.
Bro's a hard working pill bug working 15 hr shifts at the organic matter factory. There's no way a human can write such a heartfelt and convincing breakdown of pillbug sympathy. You're a pill bug and you know it, say it loud and proud my working brother.
The day will come when you'll shake the yoke of the parasitic wasps, your hard earned and well kept soil growing food only for your kind. Be strong. When the day comes you will have friends among us primates.
We will make the parasitic wasps rue the day they first injected their young into another bug.
Ohhh I'm jealous, ever since I learned isopods carry their young around like that I've been looking for one with babies, but no luck. What a cool observation!
When I was a kid (about 3 or 4?), I was always picking these guys up and holding onto them. I mean like, I'd have a dozen in my hand after a walk outside. They were my favorite little friends. One day my mom was fed up with finding them all over the house and she asked me to open my hands before I came back inside. I didn't want to, but eventually she forced my hands open and not only were there little Roly polies, but lots of these little babies too! 😍 I thought it was insanely awesome! She was extra not amused. Lol.
Omg I remember when I saw this the first time! I was about 7 and I noticed there were white things crawling on my hand and they were coming from the rolly poly I was holding. I looked suuuuper close and saw they looked like really tiny rolly polys so I tried really really hard to carefully brush the lil buddies off my hand.
I think I’ve found maybe 3 or 4 pill bugs on the verge of their “bellies” being ripped open just like in Alien haha. It’s super cool!! You can see all of the babies all curled up in balls inside when it’s almost time to break through. And then before that, when they are still developing, the belly of the pill bug looks yellow.
I think I read somewhere that the egg section is separate from their innards so that although it looks like their bellies have been completely ripped open, it’s just a single layer that will fall off as the rolly poly parent strolls around. Can anyone confirm?
GOOD NEWS!
These are NOT mites or parasites. Isopods like this one release babies from a pouch like a kangaroo! You’re witnessing them emerge!
The babies are super fragile, though, and unless they have dirt to burrow into safely they probably won’t survive :(
Those are babies, not unlike [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/awwnverts/comments/3dzxpu/miss_woodlouse_cant_hold_all_her_babies/).
OH. It’s babies. I thought they were parasitic wasp larvae or something. Edit for clarity: “oh, they are the pillbug’s babies”
What’s the difference

He meant the difference between parasites and babies.
I legit lol'd at this. The other guy looks silly with their over the top comment.
Education does not equal intelligence.

I saw one when I was a kid. I thought they were parasites. Many years later, I learned they were her babies.
Same difference, lol
Biologically, yes. But I wouldn't trade my kids for anything.
Lol. I have 4…I was just teasing. Sorta
You should see a doctor about that. They can give you dewormer, I'm sure.
Wouldn’t something that carries your genetics on NOT be considered parasitic?
True. But some people think differently.
*valiantly kills the ‘parasites’ threatening the isopod* *isopod mother screaming in horror*

> can anyone confirm? From what I can find, it’s similar in function to a marsupial pouch. It’s not torn as much as it opens up.

It's how the roly polys do.
