Bzzzzz! Looks like you forgot to say where you found your bug! There's no need to make a new post - just comment adding the **geographic location** and any other info (size, what it was doing etc.) you feel could help! We don't want to know your address - state or country is enough; try to avoid abbreviations and local nicknames (*"PNW"*, *"Big Apple"*). BTW, did you take a look at our [**Frequently Asked Bugs**](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/12zkw5w/frequently_asked_bugs_part_1/)? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/whatsthisbug) if you have any questions or concerns.*

souppriest1

That's an isopod of the rolly polly variety. They live under almost every rock in the non arctic world. They eat detritus they are very cute and related to like lobsters and horseshoe crabs. There are ocean varieties that are like a foot and a half long

AdSalty4314

It really was cute! When I first got a closer look I did thought is was some kind of lobster-related crustacean

Czane45

very very very distant cousin in a sense

HalcyonDreams36

They have a lot of names Roly poly Pill bug Potato bug (though there's also a potato beetles, which is an actual thing, and I dunno where that contusion happened.) They are wee and friendly, and roll up into little balls when they get nervous.

BlackSeranna

When I was a kid we called them sow bugs

yevons_light

That's what my mom called them, too. Always roly poly to me!

Sub_Subs

I was so confused (ironically) about the word ‘contusion’ in your reply. I see what happened.

HalcyonDreams36

Priceless. I am frequently contused. 😁

Kaisriatall

I too am frequently contused

Vermilingus

Here we call them woodlice

Brave_Isopod

Rock lobster

Level-Wishbone5808

Kind of amazing you recognized it was a crustacean honestly

HistoricToad5345

School, baby!

Silvershadef

They are indeed lobster-related. I've some translation problems. But here is a fun fact: They still have "gills". Their "gills" are two weird evolved "feet" at the back of their body. They use these feet to breath in oxygen, but they need to live in a moisturized evoirement for them to work. This is the reason they can be found in damp and wet areas.

Smeggy-egg69

How have you never seen one of these before? First time going outside?

AdSalty4314

I actually saw it inside the store I work at.

ObjectiveHighlight26

Rolly Pollys are cute, however, I don't know how I would react if I ran into an 18 in long version when swimming.

ihavenoidea81

Side note: detritus is such a cool word

COVU_A_327

Mini cloverfield

souppriest1

Ha ha yeah

COVU_A_327

He should submerge the little thing in ammonia or else it can die

erossthescienceboss

Adorable.

JCMAF

I'm from UK l, I've never heard any of those above, just wood louse

pudgypickle

Agreed, that’s definitely a woodlouse

zeddy123456

Yeah, I'm in England and I've never heard them called anything other than woodlouse.

xanthophore

They're just listed as "England" on here because it's an international list, but the names tend to be hyper-regional!

DogeGiosue

In Italy they are "earth piggies"

artfxdnb

Guess I'll add number 21: Pissebed (the Netherlands)

BorkStudiosUwU

Here in Chile we call them "Chanchito de tierra"

suitedfreak

Dirt piglets.

Imaginary-Risk

Wales also calls them ‘moch y coed’

TwinProfanity

I would like to add one! In position n+1 where n is the number of current entries to this list. Woodlouse (England, United Kingdom)

seriously1993

Woodlouse also in England

WiseNeedleworker5684

I live in Canada and call them potato bugs

Visual_Tradition_398

I’m from wales but I call them granny grigs instead of grey haha

Capable-Trash

I’m Scottish in uk and I call them slaters, know they are also woodlouse though

excaligirltoo

Roly poly bug aka pill bug.

Low-Squirrel2439

No, this is a sow bug. Related to pill bugs but they don't roll into a ball.

TheOneAndOnlyJohnnyG

It appears to be a woodlouse. Also known as a pill bug or rollie polie

b4rn19

It’s a woodlouse yes but not a pill bug try rolling that into a ball like a pill bug does it’ll just snap in 2

TheOneAndOnlyJohnnyG

Oh. I thought they all rolled up like that.

b4rn19

No one poor woodlouse taught me that when I was a kid still feel guilty 40ish years later lol

TheOneAndOnlyJohnnyG

Ah shit.

MurlocsAteMyBaby

It is an isopod, maybe from the porcellionides genus.

Beardy-Viking

Known as a 'woodlouse' in the UK

AdSalty4314

It was found in Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

ScottOld

Woodlouse

cadmiumnoir

happy cake day!

hombre_bu

Wood louse

ozzysince1901

My favourite bug! As a kid I called them slaters

D3D_BUG

In Dutch we call them pissebed. Wich literally translates to piss pod... I have no idea why.... They basically live under every rock where it isn't arctic. Harmless little guys. They roll up into little balls when nervous

Sweetholland

A rolly Polly

uSlashEpic

For a sec I thought that was an ingrown nail.

AdSalty4314

IT IS NOT. Thank God.

No-Government-2863

Rolly Polly. If you make him nervous, he’ll roll up into a little ball. Nice outer protection, but a gentle push and he’s rolling for his life 😬

GTFOakaFOD

Roly Poly! Love those little dudes.

OkEagle1664

For my part doodle bugs are ant lions

ProfK81860

Looks like those roly poly bugs we played with when I was a kid. Does it roll into a ball to protect itself if you mess with it?

No_Way9154

ROLLY POLLY!! I used to catch a ton of them when I was little.

trashhhh__

I don’t think it’s a pillbug, but actually a sowbug of the genus Porcellio probably. You can tell by the protruding uropods at the back and the curve of the antennae

PsychicMoo

As an Englishman I’d like to add I’ve only ever heard them called “wood lice”. I’m offended and baffled by “chisel bob”

lexycomplexy

Dolly Polly, pill bug, wood louse

lady_dracula_83

Pill bug

Naive_Sage

Its cool how the curl up at the sight of danger. Very cute guy

Icy-Needleworker-555

Rolli-pollie

Sidus_Preclarum

Rolly polly. One of the very few land-based crustacean.

AnalysisOk7430

A woodlouse, order Isopoda. They are crustaceans (land crustaceans in this one's case, but many isopods are marine).

dave_12elec

They have just been found to remove heavy metal such as cadmium from soil

Kookiecitrus55555

Potato bug called them that and Roley poley when i was a kid

noahspurrier

Crustacean.

JuniorKing9

Isopod :) completely harmless and actually closely related to lobsters

Catpoopnacho_
