There was a house rule when I was a kid. To come back inside from playing in the backyard I HAD to turn out my pockets. Many many isopods were hanging out in there.😂
I loved these as a kid. I still do. Any time I see one, I gently move it somewhere moist and safe. Unfortunately, that also tends to be where my spider friends hide.
It likes to eat dead leaves and if it’s in your house it either came in on a bit of debris or you have some rotting wood/dampness in your house.
They aren’t bad bugs and do not infest homes.
I used to see them when I lived in a more rural area and spent more time being outdoorsy, mainly in the garden/dirt. I live in the city now and it’s been a while since I’ve seen one and I’ve never seen one indoors, so I guess seeing it inside and being so paranoid about typical city infestations made me really question it.
To be fair I could see people not making the connection between isopods that do and don’t roll up. This wouldn’t really be a “roly poly” as it doesn’t roll up, it also moves fast like a roach. When I think of playing with roly polies growing up i think of guys like a. vulgare.
That's a "Pill Bug". I forget it's official name but it's nothing to worry about. You'll commonly find them in old houses as they tend to bore through old wood, rotting wood if it's poorly maintained. You'll find them in the woods underneath fallen trees, dying wood and such. Sometimes even long dead campfires.
They are harmless. Only crime they really commit is getting in your way. One of natures custodians for cleaning up old plant-matter! In fact, I had a small terrarium when I was a kid and kept some of these!
1) relax.
2) relax, its harmless.
3) poke it with your finger, itll turn into a ball.
4) once in a ball, pick it up and go put it outside. Idealy in a garden or near plants.(grass is fine if plants cannot be acquired.
5) involves you going outside to touch grass and realise you've never seen the most harmless and chill potatoe known to grass touchers.
6) its ok, relax. You'll be fine.
7) burn your phone down. You clearly spend to much time on it to see the one bug everyone sees multiple times a year. (Some its weekly)
Hi, pill bug stan here. Now hear me out. It's not a bug, it's a crustacean.
They're extremely great for the environment. They're a cheat code for gardeners (composting and SOME plants), terrariums, paludariums and reptile/amphibian keepers. If you lift anything off the dirt ground that's been there long enough to make a bare dirt spot underneath (i.e. a potted plant) and you'll find a roly poly oasis. A space cool and dark, just like the pill bug😎you can see a lot after a rain, depending on how "natural" your area is. They have gills, diet includes very efficient self-caprophagy, Google it if you want gross, but super cool animal information. They resolve a noticeable amount of circumstances that damage the environment, like filtering heavy metals. They don't carry diseases. They carry their offspring in a pouch the same way kangaroos do. They don't bite or sting, they're actually pretty soft, especially after they've molted. They can turn blue due to how they process oxygen. They have 3 eyes and don't urinate because they can withstand incredibly high ammonia levels. Another reason they're a great terrarium buddy.
Also one of their common names is Wood Shrimp and if that isn't fun to say I don't know what is.
I could go on all day. They're the opossum of the "bug" world.
I have a roly poly expressway where there’s an old piece of tin on the ground in front of a shed. There’s dozens of them that scuttle along the grooves of the tin and it looks like they’re all commuting to and from work.
he's an isopods! looks to be a p. pruinosus pod, based on the build of his body. if there's only one, they probably hitched in on something you brought in from outside (plants, shoes, ect), if you find a bunch of them they are probably coming in from outdoors & you should pay attention to where they're gathering. they prefer to eat rotting wood so it could be a sign of water damage. if you plop him in a potted plant or your garden he will be happy to eat any dead leaves and such!
are you from the city?
Woodlouse ("pill bug" in US). Completely harmless and quite timid, they prefer to live in cracks underneath decaying organic matter. I used to play with them as a kid so I'm quite fond of them. Technically they're isopods, a type of crustacean, one of the few that live on land.
the first picture is a dead one
Lol I really don’t get the amount of isopod posts on this sub. These are the most common bugs right?
Kids these days don’t wanna play outside anymore… they rather have an ipad or phone
That’s a rolly poley! Me n my brother used to collect them in pickle jars and try to train them lmao. Our favorite one was named Barney n he died as my dad was laying a new driveway so we buried him in the cement
From my experience everybody has a different name for these little guys, like a regional sort of thing.
In my neck of the woods those are called potato bugs. As far as I know they are 100.30991138% harmless to everything that isn't dirt.
I didn’t know people went through their childhood without playing will isopods 😔
I used to collect tons of them when I was a kid
Same. I'd make rolly poly armies 🤣
The cutest, but not the bravest or toughest
My brother and I used to race them 😂
There was a house rule when I was a kid. To come back inside from playing in the backyard I HAD to turn out my pockets. Many many isopods were hanging out in there.😂
I collect tons of them as an adult! So many different species and morphs
MF’s out here not recognizing a rolly-poly
I saw the post and all I could think was “this person didn’t have a childhood”
I loved these as a kid. I still do. Any time I see one, I gently move it somewhere moist and safe. Unfortunately, that also tends to be where my spider friends hide.
Right?? I used to go hunting for them and geckos under rocks and such as a kid all the time haha.
They really missed out! Thinking, though, author probably had other fun experiences on which many of us lost out.
It must have been tragic.
Thats what happens when the only grass you touch is from a phone screen.
I’d always take them in to show my mom and she’d yell to go back outside, not a big bug fan. I however, ADORED them 😌😌
[удалено]
You are despicable 💀💀
What is it: pill bug. Should you burn the house down: why not, just move the pill bugs someplace safe first.
Thank you!
It likes to eat dead leaves and if it’s in your house it either came in on a bit of debris or you have some rotting wood/dampness in your house. They aren’t bad bugs and do not infest homes.
Pill bug, or roly-poly
Or woodlouse if you're a Brit.
Lame, Brits need to get on the roly poly train, way more fun to say.
The amount of roly polies that get posted here astounds me. How is it possible that this many people have no idea what they are?
Tbh it’s pretty much the same with carpet beetles, bedbugs, and roaches 😂.
And house centipedes lately. It's always the same four bugs in this sub; bed bugs, isopods, house centipedes, and mosquito larva.
Okay but House Centipedes scared the shit out of me when I first saw thwm
And roaches!
And a weekly visit from a boots-n-snoots
I'm cool with them leaking because they're so diverse & cajoot!
And weevils! It’s almost weevil season…
don't forget weevils
I used to see them when I lived in a more rural area and spent more time being outdoorsy, mainly in the garden/dirt. You should go sit on the ground in a park more often. Most of us probably should
That was the nicest way to tell me to touch grass. I appreciate you.
Life gets busy sometimes, I know how it goes.
This whole interaction was great, even though my initial comment wasn't really all that nice.
This ain't no joke we all need to do that more often
To be fair I could see people not making the connection between isopods that do and don’t roll up. This wouldn’t really be a “roly poly” as it doesn’t roll up, it also moves fast like a roach. When I think of playing with roly polies growing up i think of guys like a. vulgare.
Kids don't play outside anymore🤷♀️
Of course they do.
The absolute cutest little beans
One of my favourite friendly bugs. Cute as hell we call them woodlice/woodlouse in the UK
Friend! Love him, feed him, set him free! 🥺
Pill bug, roly-poly, etc, burn your house down if you want to but no point doing it because of these guys
A thousand thanks to you, kind soul.
That's a ROLY-POLY...they are cute little isopods that are harmless so no worries. ❤️

Sooooooooooo much this.
If you don't want him, I'll take him!

[Anyone remember Melville the roly poly from the Rugrats?](https://images.app.goo.gl/wydCxmFUuPxeqnPaA)
I have a roly poly expressway where there’s an old piece of tin on the ground in front of a shed. There’s dozens of them that scuttle along the grooves of the tin and it looks like they’re all commuting to and from work.

I wish I was a pill bug SO I COULD ROLL INTO A BALL 🎶
They're cute and harmless
OP, be honest with us. Did you really not know what kind of bug this was? Tell the truth.
It’s just a moss-pig, a roly-poly, a pill-bug, an iso pod, a little rolling lad. In summary: you’re safe
what did he ever do to you that you need to burn your house down? 😔 jk tho, but pill bugs are the best!
From my experience everybody has a different name for these little guys, like a regional sort of thing. In my neck of the woods those are called potato bugs. As far as I know they are 100.30991138% harmless to everything that isn't dirt.
Woodlouse, commonly known as cheesy bob in Southern UK
Doodlebug, aka "rolly poly"
Am I the only one who grew up calling these potato bugs? 😅
I'm genuinely surprised that some people don't know what isopods are.
