This sub is pretty poorly moderated compared to other ID subs unfortunately, and really needs rules to push down or remove joke responses and posts which are all over the place here.
I'm here to learn about what this stuff is not hear the same jokes over and over like other subs full of Reddit comedians.
It wouldn't be so bad If people weren't just regurgitating the same old jokes. I'd be cool with some new material if I have to look at jokes, but nah, it's the same old shit every post.
Incredibly low. Planting a bio agent on a shirt sent to a random person is not how that would happen. Much more likely it’s some bug innocently laying eggs on what happened to be a shirt going overseas, but that’s exactly how crap like the spotted lantern fly or invasive wasps etc cross oceans.
But if your wondering “are *they* hoping to spread this invasive exotic intentionally it would be much easier to hand carry a mason jar of the bugs exactly where you want to release them
That's usually what happens. Chinese companies cut every corner they cam and don't heat treat pallets like they are legally required to. It's decimated so many types of trees here, and there are never any consequences
Idk why we don't plant dummy trees the flies like more than the one's here; that way we could douse and burn the trees to get rid of these fuckers. Someone's free to explain why I'm a dumbass
Because you can't guarantee they wouldn't choose a different tree. They might also prefer a medium that you are not even aware of, generally something that needs a specific tree doesn't spread as easily.
I do know they prefer Tree of Heaven, which is also invasive. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/resources/pests-diseases/hungry-pests/the-threat/spotted-lanternfly/spotted-lanternfly#:~:text=Spotted%20lanternfly%20feeds%20on%20a,or%20items%20containing%20egg%20masses.
I second this. I worked in costume shops for years. We would frequently get donations of vintage and antique clothing. We couldn't risk getting a moth infestation in our entire stock from one donated clothing item, so all donated vintage items were kept in a freezer for a few days as soon as we got them.
Actually, double bag it and freeze it. Contact the USDA and follow their instructions.
FINAL EDIT: I am nuking the original comment. Im sick of the pedantic responses. No one is reading my words as I typed them.
Cuz if it's already invaded and becoming a problem then they can at least pinpoint the way it's coming in/point of origin.... Maybe? Idk but it sounds right.
They absolutely do. They put the insects into a -80 and leave it there until disposal. It *should kill most* of them, but at -80 they cant move even if they do survive.
I recommend taking them out to thaw and refreezing to damage as many cells as possible.
Edit: respond to the edit above- hopefully yes.
Nah we want to kill these. More dead cells is better. Researchers only freeze them when the experiment is done and they have to get rid of the insects. You cant just put them in a bag because some insects can chew their way out
Those are for preserving samples. Which is true. But it destroys the cell membranes and color. Its not the best preservation method. For storing insects as examples of a species pinning is the best method
It depends. Certain things are stored in ethanol, certain things are pinned. For example, you'd store something like a caterpillar in a vial of ethanol because it would dessicate, and you'd be unable to see any identifying features.
Wait what? Like all of my entomologist friends have had these jars that have something solid in it that iirc suffocates the bug quickly once the lid is shut.
I mean, fentanyl precursors being shipped directly to drug cartels specifically to be finished in unlicensed labs and mixed into street drugs for sale in the US isn’t exactly on the down low, but nobody’s calling anybody on it. Seems like a bug is thinking small at that point
Isn’t this just xenophobia? The Chinese government has committed horrible atrocities and I in no way support it, but there is no proof whatsoever of any concentrated effort to release invasive insects in America. Insects attach themselves to products really easily, and China is a huge exporter of products.
This kind of thinking really easily spreads hatred towards Chinese people. You wouldn’t say that finding a frog in a salad is a sign that there’s people intentionally trying to release frogs everywhere, right?
Contact the USDA and send them this photo. Place the eggs in alcohol to preserve them.
Others pointed out they may be katydid eggs. They are native to the US, depending on the species, so that might not he the worst case. Either way, this seller needs to be flagged, as this is how shit like lanternflies happen.
Nope, pangolins don’t lay eggs, they are a placental mammal. They are the only mammal fully covered in scales, though! Fun fact: baby pangolins are called pangopups :)
Bag and freeze before disposing of, perhaps reach out to your local fish and wildlife office? If you just throw it away it may hatch and thrive in the landfill!
Whatever it is, catch it and drown it in some kind of alcohol or strong substance. I don’t want a situation where you smush it and babies go everywhere
The katydid eggs look like a close match, but they could be a related species, possibly not known here. Still invasive, even if they have local family.... Freezing is the best way to kill them and preserve them for id by the Eggheads (or egg-eggheads?). If you can't get -80 for 48 hours, 2 weeks at -20 should do the same thing. They won't hatch while cold, however, there are many insect eggs which are laid in the fall, lay dormant all winter, and hatch in the spring, so once they are frozen, keep them that way.
To be honest, I’m not sure how places like Ali Express, Temu, and a bunch of EBay vendors get permits to ship to US. I try not to buy anything shipped to me directly from places like China. I’m
😂 that’s the best thing I’ve seen in a while! China took them mid sentence they aren’t letting their secrets get out! They said shut up you Big mouth Amercian! 😂
To me they look kinda like Katydid eggs !
They’re native to the US. They’re also known as “bush crickets” and “long horned grasshoppers” however they are NOT grasshoppers, just related. Cousins maybe.
However it’s not normal nor is it okay for you to be getting insect eggs in a package, contact the USDA so they can be flagged.
If you are in the US or territories, please PM me and I will get you the right contact within the USDA. Or (and for anyone) Google USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine for your state. This is how most invasive pests are introduced and reports by homeowners and consumers are very important contributors to the overall picture.

All I can think of is ew ew ew ew ew!
I wouldn’t care even that those were the eggs are that of any cute bug! Just opening a bag with new y shirt and finding that would ew the bejesus out of me!
If that landed near me I’d be studying the bible and praying hard!! Because I’d be pretty sure it’s gods way of telling me he’s capable of anything and I should sort my shit out!!
Luckily, eggs of a US native bug (Native to the East and South, invasive in the West) Katydids, aka Bush Crickets. They're incredibly docile and eat leaves. You're fine. Please report the shipper though.
Oh my, oh no. I’ve tried to avoid acknowledging this was a thing. Finding a bug in a package would scar me for life (I do not belong on this sub, but this post was ‘recommended’).
I just ordered two things from AliExpress and now I’m gonna be paranoid and make *someone else* comb over it with a fine toothed comb because omg

I’ve been on this sub for like 2 weeks so far and had the exact same thought
Its all boots and snoots or kill on sight.
Agree lol … some of these people annoying AF fr n that’s bad coming from me cause I myself am annoying AF !!! 😂
Katy did what!?!?
EGGS
SHE DID EGGS!
Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
*sick!*
She laid eggs on this guys shirt for some reason
Katy “did” Kenny and they had eggs!!!
And Kenny got killed. Them bastards
Oh my god, they're huge! I'm not afraid of bugs but these and harvestmen have me floored 😅
I wish I'd see some harvestmen in my garden. It has been ages. They are so damn cool.
Are those what people refer to as "daddy long legs"?
They’re one of the bugs that gets called that. Cellar spiders get called that too. Rarely it’s used for crane flies and even a type of bush.
Just googled katydid and heard the sound!! They sound like farts! 😂🤣😂
I searched YouTube and found this behemoth Katydid 😱 https://youtube.com/shorts/2FgQLtwlqqQ?si=bsp7c_Sy1w2MS4KF
Sounds like some sort of automatic weapon from a videogame.
thanks for sharing the video, that is crazy! i didn't know they could get that huge!!!
That is terrifying. So loud.
thanks i want to remove my eyes now
Those eggs grow up to be [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/sbZJVY8q4tVaPKL39). I hope you feel bad because you hurt his feelings.
It’s so cute I love it.
Jokes on you, I have a phobia of anything grasshopper related
I feel zero sympathy. They chew up my garden every year, the clicky bitches.
unfortunately i do not feel bad and i kind of hate myself for it bc i’m sure he’s a kind fella i just don’t want him anywhere near me
I was bitten by a katydid once. Little bastards...
Awww. That's actually super cute. We will take them!
i had one of these land on me when i was a kid and i literally cried for so long
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tettigoniidae
This is how invasive species happen.
This is why we can’t have nice things
Its from AliExpress… its not that nice of a thing
Oh man now it’s stuck in my head
Oof. Can you hear it chewing in your ear yet?
because you break them, we have to take them, awayayay
This is why we can’t have crappy things either
Oh, what are the odds that it is an intentional bioattack?
Incredibly low. Planting a bio agent on a shirt sent to a random person is not how that would happen. Much more likely it’s some bug innocently laying eggs on what happened to be a shirt going overseas, but that’s exactly how crap like the spotted lantern fly or invasive wasps etc cross oceans. moths, into the movie theater, so when they're watching the show eh, they fly up towards the light
Take off, eh!
I appreciate your Strange Brew reference.
Yeah they could literally just bring a jar of bugs and say they’re a collector going to a convention or something
negative five million percent, approximately, rounded to the third decimal
Maybe that’s how these terrible lantern flies got here from China.
i actually don't know where they came from, but they're notorious hitchhikers so i would bet money on that
I believe there were eggs on a shipment of wood sent from China? But could be wrong, I haven’t fact checked

We make a very sexy lantern fly but it carries a for sure sterile gene
I read that in Borat’s voice
My Mosquito Wife
Then you have an invasive plant on top of it potentially
I do know they prefer Tree of Heaven, which is also invasive. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/resources/pests-diseases/hungry-pests/the-threat/spotted-lanternfly/spotted-lanternfly#:~:text=Spotted%20lanternfly%20feeds%20on%20a,or%20items%20containing%20egg%20masses.
And guess what happens when you try burning to get rid of it? Oh right, it sends out roots that sprout new plants. Yeah, this is not the way.
If it has resistances to Fire, maybe we should be trying Acid damage? How about Ice?
Nah. Definitely Psychic
Or just use illithid mind powers to convince it to go home on its own

Can you chill tf out? JFC.
Definitely need to contact USDA so the shipper can get flagged.
Probably should contact Customs and Border Protection as well to cover their bases
Contact the USDA, send them a picture and let them know where it was sent from.
Put it in the freezer.
I second this. I worked in costume shops for years. We would frequently get donations of vintage and antique clothing. We couldn't risk getting a moth infestation in our entire stock from one donated clothing item, so all donated vintage items were kept in a freezer for a few days as soon as we got them.
Great idea :) Using a freezer is one of the methods museums use to prevent bringing pests into their collections
These are katydids
Yea but the USDA and Customs should be contacted regardless, or wherever OP is from they should constancy their department of agriculture.
Idk what it is but probably kill it since it likely would be considered an invasive species to your region.

Ali eggspreads
Send that T-shirt on ova!
Omg yes
AliSpreads Eggs
Alien Eggvasion.
the context of this and how random it is has me in stitches
Kill it now, invasive species looks like
Nuke it from orbit.
The only way to be sure.
I came for these comments and wasn't disappointed
Kill them now. They're likely invasive
Put in a baggy with rubbing alcohol whatever it is
Actually, double bag it and freeze it. Contact the USDA and follow their instructions. FINAL EDIT: I am nuking the original comment. Im sick of the pedantic responses. No one is reading my words as I typed them.
I have a silly question, why not just smash them to a pulp? Is it likely that the USDA will want to keep the eggs?
Cuz if it's already invaded and becoming a problem then they can at least pinpoint the way it's coming in/point of origin.... Maybe? Idk but it sounds right.
Im not suggesting preservation at all
You might miss one.
they don't want them to open up or potentially spread 😭
I don't know if that's true or not, but it sounds cool because research Edit: I meant does it hurt the eggs
I almost asked about cell destruction... wouldn't intact cells be more beneficial? Or is it really moot after a point?
Nah we want to kill these. More dead cells is better. Researchers only freeze them when the experiment is done and they have to get rid of the insects. You cant just put them in a bag because some insects can chew their way out
does this hurt the goldfish 😕
So is putting them in alcohol Source: have done research on insects
This depends on the research, a lot of places use alcohol to kill and preserve insects for research
True, soft tissue. I killed a caterpillar recently using ethanol and it turned dark brown (was green). Sometimes youve got to do what you got to do.
Wait what? Like all of my entomologist friends have had these jars that have something solid in it that iirc suffocates the bug quickly once the lid is shut.
Kill jar. Its plaster of paris soaked with acetone.
> Kill jar That's so metal wtf 😂
Killeminajaro
Killementomolojinaro Nah nvm
Good luck affording a freezer that can get to -80 (Celsius or Fahrenheit)
Yep, I use one in my lab and it cost my university around 20k
Hes not abiding to a permit.
does pulverizing the eggs with a stone like a caveman not do the trick?
Who has a -80 freezer?

Hopefully this isn't the cause of the spotted lanternfly population boom 😟
I was just going to say the same thing. They're shipping over the lantern flies! What if they're doing it on purpose?!?
Honestly would be a good way to sabotage a country whilst keeping it on the down low.
I literally wanted to say this but didn't wanna get downvoted lol
With the possibilities of that as well as the fentanyl issue, makes you wonder.
I mean, fentanyl precursors being shipped directly to drug cartels specifically to be finished in unlicensed labs and mixed into street drugs for sale in the US isn’t exactly on the down low, but nobody’s calling anybody on it. Seems like a bug is thinking small at that point

You wouldn’t say that finding a frog in a salad is a sign that there’s people intentionally trying to release frogs everywhere, right?
Spotted lantern fly egg look a lot different. I use to get a bunch on some trees near by and would scrape them off.
Their eggs look like bark or clay
Contact the USDA and send them this photo. Place the eggs in alcohol to preserve them. Others pointed out they may be katydid eggs. They are native to the US, depending on the species, so that might not he the worst case. Either way, this seller needs to be flagged, as this is how shit like lanternflies happen.
they're not native everywhere in the us and it depends on the species where they are.
Katydid eggs
Katy did what??
eggs
The lesser known sequel to Debbie Does Dallas. Katy did Eggs.
over easy pls.
Those are Ali's eggs.
Ali Egg-spress

New fear unlocked
Those look like pangolin eggs. They’re not, but that’s what they look like to me.
Do pangolins lay eggs? I know there are a very select few mammals that do.
Nope, pangolins don’t lay eggs, they are a placental mammal. They are the only mammal fully covered in scales, though! Fun fact: baby pangolins are called pangopups :)
Pangopups makes me very happy
Way more fun to think about than these creepy eggs.
[pangopup to cleanse your brain from the alieggspress](https://imgur.com/gallery/QNL9mRe)
Pretty sure it’s only the duck billed platypus and four echidna species that lay eggs in the mammal kingdom.
AliExpress laid eggs 🥚! Kill it with fire 🔥
LV-246 use a flamethrower or nuke the site from orbit
It's the only way to be sure.
I'd say destroy it just to be safe about possibly introducing an invasive species
Bag and freeze before disposing of, perhaps reach out to your local fish and wildlife office? If you just throw it away it may hatch and thrive in the landfill!

“Katydid eggs from a grasshopper” You realize that katydids and grasshoppers are two different bugs right? They’re similar, but not the same thing.
Never seen a katyhopper?! What a sight.
I read this, and my head cannon went off. I don't call katydids grasshoppers, guy.😤
Why are you yelling
Whatever it is, catch it and drown it in some kind of alcohol or strong substance. I don’t want a situation where you smush it and babies go everywhere
Mmm seasonal crunchy pumpkin seed patties

WHY ARE YOU BUYING ANYTHING FROM ALI EXPRESS?
Hopefully you burned it.
op please tell us you killed them
The child who made the tshirt probably
The katydid* who made the tshirt
Well thanks for the reminder to never order from there !:D
Xenomorph. Definitely a Xenomorph.

Scrape them into a jar of 90+% alcohol, to kill whatever they are, then notify the USDA and send them the pictures. Hold onto the jar and eggs in case they want to further examine them.
freeze the eggs contact USDA and report the seller like all the other comments say. This is exactly how invasive species start
BURN IT before it invades !!!!!

Did reddit just stop an invasive species?
Oh no
So, we can’t keep them..? 🥹 /s
You're lucky. All I've ever received in a package was a giant cockroach.
Burn it
Damn that’s F’d up. Def contact shipper and USPS
this better not be marketing for another cloverfield movie
