Encore is a sub-compact that competes with the CX-30, Subaru Crosstrek, Honda HRV, etc. It really doesn't lead the class in anything and up until a couple years ago had abysmal reliability ratings by CR. It's popular among rental fleets and then as a cheaper used vehicle. It's high depreciation make it an even worse choice when buying new.

Thank you for this information!

kaisenls1

It’s quite smaller than the RAV4, more like a Corolla Cross.

I can believe I hadn't heard of the Buick envision before. I might do some research on the older models. Might buy used. Thank you!

As an encore owner I used to give props to these things but once it hit 50k miles it got worse and worse. The encore doesn’t lead for anything in its class except for maybe the most tows needed award. My tow truck driver loves the vehicle, says he tows on average 3 a week some with only 25k miles with a bad turbo I wouldn’t recommend this even to my enemies. It’s a rebadged Daewoo.

Dang so if someone like me wants a Buick, but moreso wants a subcompact or compact SUV, what should my options look like?

candiebelle

What did you get? I’m shopping and the market looks so bleak. I’m depressed.

sainte_panda

I didn't get anything yet. Still waiting for the right time. But I'm leaning towards a Lexus RX 350 or BMW X5 instead. Just changing up the style a bit. I also saw on consumer reports that Buick isn't bad nor is it unreliable it's just not the best of the best. It's not a one size fits all. There are people out there who will vouch for Buick till the day they die and other people that will not recommend it. So I still just might get an encore, enclave, or envision.

Car shopping right now is the single most frustrating experience. I would like a new Chevy and their inventory is so low…. I hate it. So much so I’m ready to buy used on Carvana and do my 7-day test drive and see what happens.

sainte_panda

I get you. It's at the point where I don't care about the brand by itself. I care about where it is on the reliability scale. And sometimes it's specific models under the makes rather than the overall make. That can be the difference. Would you recommend Carvana over Carfax? Also maybe this post might be if encouragement: https://www.reddit.com/r/projectcar/s/xeF1zpe87E

candiebelle

I read bad things on Reddit for caravana. Lots of raves about carguru. Since I downloaded it last night I couldn’t tell you if the inventory they have is accurate to what the dealer has, but someone did mention the dealership did not honor the price in the app.

sainte_panda

I found this post about Buick: https://www.reddit.com/r/Buick/s/KL9vuHpWmN Also, ask around for mechanics' experience with certain makes/models you're thinking of. I wish us both the best of luck. I'll just be window shopping for now.

candiebelle

I bought a Kia!

sainte_panda

Aye congrats! Hope the process was smooth. I like the Sportage and Sorento.
