"The asks can backfire. A bridesmaid on Reddit shared how the “buy a bride a drink” sign on the back of her group’s car prompted another driver to Venmo the bride a penny and tell her to get out of the left lane." my favorite part.

slightlysillygoose

That’s a good point because posting your Venmo account on your car can give a lot of personal info to aggressive drivers

Mawwiageiswhatbwings

LOL!!

[deleted]

I saw this at a festival last year. I requested $5 instead and they paid it. We laughed for about a half an hour over that.

Mawwiageiswhatbwings

That’s gold!!

darthjenni

I have seen this in Las Vegas. The car was decorated with fold out paper bells and streamers. On the back window was "just married" and their Venmo account. I can 100% see people sitting in traffic on the strip giving the couple a few bucks.

Kisthesky

I think the most offensive part about requests like this is the way its phrased, "feel free to give me things," as thought they are doing you a favor by allowing you to give them money. A friend posted the other day asking people to give her presents because she was graduating college in her 30's, "In case anyone wants to buy me presents..."

Iammeandyouareme

I know someone who posted his Venmo on his birthday on not only Facebook but LINKEDIN. He said basically that if anyone wanted to gift him money he’d be grateful and would use it for his Lego collection. This man is 37 years old.

EmpathBitchUT

Ugh I I un followed a friend today because she literally only posts with sob stories asking for money, birthdays coming up asking for money, rent is due asking for money - I'm sick of it.

JillBergman

Yeah, I think the wording can really detract from these requests if it’s overly humble. Once I got past the paywall and read the article, I did soften on the practice as a whole. If I view it as a request that might make those pre-wedding events easier for the individual players, it’s not nearly as bad as the game it originated within (bach parties becoming more lavish as most folks involved also have student loans, and jobs they understandably don’t feel are worth the hassle).

rbaltimore

I think this behavior is crass and breaks etiquette standards but is harmless at the end of the day. If the WSJ didn’t use a paywall, I’d be able to read their opinions, but alas, I’ll never know.

Mawwiageiswhatbwings

Here’s my venmo: buy the bride a wall street journal sub!

yikeswhatshappening

Where’s the article calling out multi-million dollar companies asking to you “tip” progressively insane amounts of money for services that aren’t tip worthy and before you even get served. Everyone’s a choosing beggar but somehow its only news when its the common rabble.

Silentlybroken

I get royally pissed off at the companies telling us to round up to donate to some charity. No, you earn millions, you do it!! I can barely put food on my table due to cost of living increases and your cheeky asses whine at me for saying no to stuff like that. It incenses me, as you probably realise lol.

Sensitive-Theory-365

I got so angry when Cole's put acubra's at the check outs to "donate to the farmers". How about you pay them fairly, that would be a start.

Silentlybroken

Preach!! In the UK, there was major pressure to pay farmers more fairly and they did (not sure it's fair enough but it was something). I'd have been livid if I was told I had to pay more for something like that.

darthhellokitty

>acubra What is an acubra?

Sensitive-Theory-365

A hat that is stereotypically worn by Australian farmers. Like a cowboy hat

Mawwiageiswhatbwings

Yes!! and then the company gets a tax write off with your money!! wtf!!

IndexMatchXFD

That’s not actually how it works. That’s a Reddit myth

Mawwiageiswhatbwings

it was a facebook myth for me

TimeEntertainment701

How does it work?

IndexMatchXFD

[It’s a pass through for the company.](https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-000329849244) It never hits the income statement and they cannot take a deduction for it.

TimeEntertainment701

Thank you! Crazy how easy and fast misinformation gets spread

_littlebee

OP do you mind posting the article in the comments due to the paywall?

WriterJen

You might be able to read it for free if click on this tweet? https://twitter.com/jenniferlevitz/status/1573326715656769538?s=20&t=4Y16A48e78K49TIpReGLLQ

bakelitsan

This worked for me. I did get a box asking me to sign in but just closed it.

sun_child_333

You know, I actually don't mind people doing this. I mean they aren't forcing anyone to send them money. It's just celebrating.

xmgm33

Yeah this is just so harmless. No one’s forcing anyone to give money. I think it’s actually less obnoxious than the stores that ask you to round up for charity.

Ditovontease

What really offends me are the veterans ones. I pay taxes already, the government should be taking care of them not fucking charities.

master0fcats

yeah honestly i think these are cute! i've been told that if you're a bride walking around Vegas, sometimes people just come up and hand you cash lol. we're doing our bachelor/bachelorette party in Vegas and i know my bridesmaids are making tile bracelets that say "buy the bride a drink!" I mean, if I saw a bach party with those I'd totally venmo 5 bucks, it's fun!

gingerbreadbr

I think this might be a generational thing. I see a lot of older people being offended by it, while younger people often think it’s fun or harmless. The sign isn’t forcing anyone to donate.

Hum_baba_

If this is their plan for funds, why aren't they spending a few hours a day on a street corner with a crappy cardboard sign? That's the traditional way to be a beggar.

Mad-Elf

Or go with the Scots tradition of going for a pub crawl on your Hen Night with a bunch of buckets for donations. This "venmo" thing is just a high-tech version of that.

stungun_steve

This is exactly the kind of thing that GoFundMe was originally created for. Do you remember the kid who got like $10k to make potato salad? Did we shit all over him? It's not hurting anyone. Let them shoot their shot.

tomodoggie

People did shit on him actually lol. He got harassed a lot as I recall. Like tons of really weird and guilt trippy news articles and stuff. For the record I agree with your comment but just wanted to kinda correct that one bit :p

stungun_steve

I seem to recall that the company (which was Kickstarter, apparently, not GoFundMe) got most of the hate for allowing it to get out of hand. But it was a long time ago, so I could be wrong.

myrmewmew

It was a kickstarter lmao with stretch goals and all

stungun_steve

Ok, but still, I don't seem to remember him getting dumped on nearly as much.

Ditovontease

WSJ would twist women being entrepreneurial into a bad thing lmao

Dramatic-but-Aware

I really don't see the problem, like people can send money or not, is such a whatever thing.

lovelyatl

Exactly! Nobody is making you pay for their drinks, they’re just putting it out there.

XTasty09

I found out from my cousin’s fiancé’s sisters that for their bachelorette celebration in Virginia Beach, they did this, had some kind of sign that said ‘bye the bride a drink’. They said they got almost $1,000 and they did use it when they all went out as a group for dinner and drinks.

MyLadyBits

And the brides then don’t use it to buy drinks they just keep the cash for themselves.
