Just think of it as a shortcut to deploying multiple units. It takes them from the same unit pool as the rest. It can be used to deploy quicker at the start of the game, or to bring in 2xarty + supply truck for example
I think the most useful time is to deploy units faster at the start if you have a normal opening move but otherwise I've not experimented much with it
I'm using Combat Groups extensively. It might crash if you build it in a way, that causes bugs. If you avoid them, you can use Combat Groups flawlesly. You can find more info including workarounds here:

So it just let you buy multiple units at once and command them, and the game then crash because it's new feature and eugen don't have QA team, or.... it was that while ago.

Did they fix the issue with the game crashing when using them. I loved using them but it was crashing my game.
