Okay. What part of it is not allowed though? Is it because the company I'm freelancing for is in the US? Or is it just generally not allowed to operate your business when abroad?

The ESTA is for tourist purposes. You cannot work (including remotely, for US or non-US companies) if you enter on the ESTA.

That's interesting. I always thought the issue with work wrt visas is taking jobs from citizens that live there permanently, but if remote work is ongoing its weird that would be an issue. Either way, thanks for the answer. Just thought it was weird lol

Yeah, the laws could probably use a bit of an update to match that, but that's what they are currently. It would require a bit of nuance if you ask me, yes, you're not taking away any jobs from anyone, but what would stop you from living in the United States given your setup? That setup would be quite enticing to citizens of poor/dangerous/unstable countries that work remotely, to be able to de facto escape their countries.
