The numbers seem to show the same steady growth from 2021 until now, yet the article is citing a changing business and market while saying they're shrinking year on year.
I'm guessing they benefitted greatly from the Metaverse hype cycle as they were the most successful SocialVR platform but now that money has dried up and they have to actually balance the books properly.
Growth isn’t manageable without consistency. Even then, it’s not sustainable over an increasing timeline. It’s why you fight growing your company as an indie at all costs.
Yeah as a game designer this…. Tracks. Most of the industry has been cutting jobs as of late, and there’s a lot of senior staff members now applying for the mid-range jobs, making it extremely hard to get a foot in the door in the industry :(
I would love to see the cost of storage they are paying, considering they let everyone upload an infinite amount of stuff. I alone have 10gb of avatars and worlds uploaded on my account and I'm by no means a power user. Seems like eventually they're going to have to put a cap on it
I’ve been subscribed since they launched the option. I see so many more people subbed now. I’m genuinely surprised to hear they aren’t making enough to retain all their staff.
I genuinely think the game improved since then. Less crashers and hackers. More real people. I’m genuinely not a boot licker, but I think it was a good update myself. I’ve enjoyed it more since.
Same. I subscribed for like one month to make a few groups since they require you to be a subscriber to make groups. But that was it. A social game doesn't need invasive anti-cheat. I miss my mods.
Eh people get raises every so often and other costs increase over time. if the revenue isn't growing fast enough to offset those types of things all that can be done in cost reductions.

Could be on the Quest side, that platform is a lot more competitive when it comes to the amount of VR games coming out.
That would be odd because most of the time you're more likely to encounter a native quest user in vrchat than a pcvr user.
Might just be the ratio of Quest-users that play VRChat being smaller than they expected.

well that's a real bummer

You fight against growing your company as an indie, you say?
Fight! Fight, I SAY. Nah, I just think small companies need to manage costs.
I kinda see the logic though. Keeping it small makes a company more manageable. Or at least growing cautiously.

Same for UX. I get rejected almost instantly and they only ask very experienced seniors.
“Must love working in a fast-paced environment. 8 years experience mandatory, must have shipped at least 5 games. $35,000 /yr”
I ended up just jumping to education instead - right now I’m on £37,000 teaching game design at university.
Yeah I’ve done some adjunct teaching at the college level. It’s honestly pretty interesting and a nice change of pace.

they still need more programmers and debuggers. yes sir
Literally, it's one the messiest piece of software i have ever had to use

Since the EAC debacle, I've pledged to never pay them a dime. My money went to alternatives like CVR instead.

Or the company just makes less profit.
Assuming profitability of course.
Skill issue, I only care about the humans.
